Well, honestly, I probably wouldn't have seen this book if it wasn't for my professor and his obscure references to buildings. This is a pretty good book to make one understand and become visually aware of the way housing affects the inhabitant and the way the inhabitant(society/culture) affects the housing... also site relationships and basically the urbanization of the world. Another thing, this book is pretty good at giving examples of housing that breaks from the "normalcy" and "style-numbness"(that's my own term!) of today. I focused mainly on Riegler and Riewe's apartment building in Austria and theories on "conditioned openness" and flexibility. This, and the other examples are pretty interesting to me, maybe a good coffee table book for some. Pick it up and compare the many different systems to your current form of housing...

A HUGE disappointment. The meager size of this triple book collection is too small to do any justice to the photographs within. In addition, many of the pages feature multiple photographs so tightly produced together they are pracitically impossible to see. The quality of the reproduced photography is substandard and in many cases so dark they lose much of the detail. The actual pages themselves are also of poor quality and appear to be on recycled non-gloss paper. The text itself is so incredibly small it is vertually impossilbe to read without a magnifing glass and the print on some of the photographs is not readable at all. I was hoping for an explaination of the symbols used on many of the pictures. If it is there I could not find it. It is a true shame and disgrace that these magnificent vintage physique models and the creative photographers that produced these classic images are wasted in this publication. These treasured glimpes back at physique male modeling on the verge of change and at the dawning of a new beginning in its infancy should be restored and reproduced in their original radiant,breathtaking, dramatic splendor and not jammed crammed into inferior books which obviously took no pride in either the models appearance or the genius of each photographer. Any true collector of vintage pictorial physique models will be dissatisfied and regret this book purchase. I know I did.

this taschen collection has a high place in my personal collection. one, i like old-time smut and this is it!

but, this collection is document of a certain aspect of gay culture that was born out of the era of oscar wilde and his feasting panthers, then lost its pretty words as society became more permissive and the viewers demanded older boys that would show more flesh.

eventually they would show themselves in various states of arousal and gay porn would be with us. of course, we don't think of these boys as potential victims like women in the sex industry but, outside of their boyish faces, obvious youth and abundant muscles, do we ever think of them? do we ever consider them? or, do we just enjoy them and then pass them around--once from hand to hand but now from email to email?

"Physique Pictorial" spanned the entire era of the "physical culture" magazine boom. The magazine, and the era ended soon after the death of its' editor Bob Mizer in 1993. There is not much to say about the pictures that other reviewers haven't said already. (Although it is sad to see the models metamorphose from clean cut, boys-next-door to dull-eyed, druggie/hustler types as the 1970's wore on.)

What really amazed me was the hard-hitting commentary by Mizer in issue after issue. A genuine libertarian, the intense public opprobrium towards homosexuals (the word "gay" wasn't yet in wide use) fazed him not at all. He insisted on his rights as an American citizen and insisted his readers do the same. His eloquent arguments against censorship carried the day in several court cases where various bluenoses sought to ban distribution of his magazine. He frequently had to contend with anthropoids from the LAPD vice squad who did everything possible to make things difficult for him. I marvel at the guys' self-possession and courage. Mixed in with the commentary are mordant and amusing photo captions regarding some of the models. Mr. Mizer was nobody's fool.

For those who can afford it, this is a marvelous historical document as well as a fun read. More proof that the gay community of today didn't just pop out of nowhere in 1969.

Taschen does a wonderful job of making available work that's likely to appeal to only a small audience; they do it well. This is no exception. Even if you only go through it all once, anyone interested in the male body should own this reprint. It's an important artifact of our cultural history, a milestone in the evolution of the man as an object of desire. And the pictures are hot, too.

Yes, the size is somewhat reduced from the originals and the second-generation images and type are that much harder to read. But this set spans almost four decades in the development of the male erotic image. Compromises are necessary and the finished product is very much worth owning.

Hilarious and Brilliant Satire: A Treasure.......2004-10-22

As part of my job as an English Professor, I am a comix scholar. Lloyd Dangle's "Axis of Trouble" is one of the best contributions to the comix genre that I have ever read. Whether the subject is politics, education, religion, or sex, Dangle's insightful drawings and narrative bring the reader to the core of the issues. While this is a collection of strips and not a classic graphic novel, Dangle alerts us to the fragility of American culture and the hilarious behaviors of individuals in a society whose pluralism gets questioned at every turn. In summary, "Axis of Trouble" is funny and very, very smart. I recommend it without hesitation to any reader. One might call it an edgier version of Michael Moore's narrative satire.

Drop Dead Hilarious.......2003-06-26

Lloyd Dangle's newest collection of Troubletown cartoons, "Axis of Trouble", finds one of America's best political cartoonists in top form. These cartoons illuminate the subtleties of the lying, cheating and stealing of America's power elites in politics, business, and entertainment. I just love the cartoon on page 74, for example, where Dangle nails Donald Rumsfeld engaging in doublespeak, intentionally obfuscating his evil actions.
Lloyd is equally adept at poking fun at the absurd failings of us regular joes in daily life.
All this is executed in a user friendly shaky wiggly line that beautifully and succinctly describes the artist's exact intent.
Lloyd Dangle is hands down the smartest cartoon satirist working today.

Dangle's take on city hipsters, parenting and government provide great entertainment for the left leaning among us. No one is immune from Dangle's pen, but hypocrites take the biggest fall. If you are annoyed with George W. and corporate crooks, you will love Axis of Trouble. ....

Herbert Foerstel traces the history of media censorship in the United States, from colonial times to the present day, while keeping an eye on the future. Although he covers the traditional sources of censorship--government fearing criticism and religious groups fearing those with differing value systems--his greatest concern appears to be with corporate control. He devotes his discussion to how a growing number of media outlets are owned and controlled by a diminishing number of giant corporations.

Foerstel demonstrates how, as a result of this corporate domination, a lot of censorship occurs without being noticed. He quotes studies showing that the small group of companies that are controlling media content don't wish to have that fact aired. He also makes it clear that the age-old battle for media freedom is now being fought over the Internet. While the Internet's nature is inherently wild, religious and political pressures force access providers to worry about local decency laws and other legislation. Foerstel uses real-world examples to make his point, such as Carnegie-Mellon University's efforts to block students from certain online adult material and the infamous Marty Rimm study.

Foerstel examines whether the Internet might come under growing corporate domination. The book Banned in the Media is a very important resource for students who are interested in doing a report on any kind of censorship. It gave me a wonderful accounting as to what the media does not tell you. It also let me know about how the Internet is censored and what the future has in store for the internet. Definitely a great knowledge base.

There are two things prospective readers need to know about this book: (1) it is focused in IT and software development project management, and (2) it is not a 'how to' book.

This is a collection of papers on advanced project management topics that experienced IT project managers will find enlightening and up-to-date with respect to techniques. The papers are divided into the following six topic areas:(1) Essential Concepts of Project Management, (2) Critical Factors for Project Quality, (3) Managing Business Relationships, (4) Effectively Managing Outsourced Projects, (5) Managing Special Projects and (6) Measuring and Improving Project Management Success.

What I like is that the book does not focus solely on software development projects, but covers areas that will interest project managements in infrastructure, oursourcing management and other IT functions. I also liked the following papers that address concerns of PMs from a larger perspective: "SEI CMM or ISO 9000: Which Is Right for Your Organization? ", "Incorporating Six Sigma Concepts into Systems Analysis" and "Managing Development in the Era of Large Complex Systems". Databases and public access catalogs are being used extensively by the public and the academic and business communities as major sources of information. Most users want to access these databases directly to locate the information they need. Increasingly, users are demanding user-friendly databases that will assist them in finding conceptual information effectively. The lack of compatibility or standardization among many different indexing vocabularies and thesauri makes it difficult to find related information in information retrieval systems containing many different online databases. This book provides a thought-provoking new perspective on the role of vocabulary control in providing access to the conceptual information found in online databases and catalogs. The first three chapters provide a basis for understanding the structure of vocabulary control systems used for the indexing of conceptual information. Chapters 4 and 5, which deal with thesaural relationship model formulation and investigation, will be of the greatest interest to designers of online databases and public access catalogs who are striving to improve access to conceptual information from multiple databases. Researchers and developers of thesauri, who are faced with the problems of compatibility and convertibility, will also be interested in testing the applicability of the thesaural relationship model for other vocabulary control systems. The findings reported in chapter six will be of particular interest to database producers and vendors. Although switching and frequency online search strategies for database search engines are not yet available, end-users and experienced searchers can still incorporate these concepts to improve the effectiveness of their searches. Recommendations resulting from this investigation are summarized in the final chapters. With the proliferation of online databases and the increasing number of inexperienced users, the development of new search strategies to facilitate easier searches is critical. In these rocky times for real estate investors it's getting harder to sell houses. This is an excellent book that explains how the seller financing procedure works. It is the most complete book on the subject that I have ever read. If you are a real estate investor and you rehab houses or lease option, this is a must read.

I've done private financing using seller notes for over 20 years. In this field, knowledge and integrity are of extreme importance. This book provides all the knowledge that any note seller will ever need, and more. We've always known this method of funding can quadruple the inquiries and double the qualified buyers, now the average seller knows how everything works. That's a hundred times better than being at the mercy of the institutional mortgage system as it now exists.

If you are interested in seller financing, this is the book you must have. As a practicing attorney for 30+ years, specializing in real estate, I thought I knew it all but I even learned some things from Mr. Speed's book. He speaks to the issues facing seller financing in a way that is easy to understand and follow with real world solutions. This is a tough area with many dangerous curves but Streetwise Seller Financing addresses each issue providing valuable tips to assist the seller. I found the book to be of more help then many of the legal books due to the fact that Mr. Speed does not give you theory but just important facts on the correct way. I have dealt with many lenders in my years of law practice that could have used this book.
