Not for City Lots, that's for Sure.......2004-01-21
I looked at this book in hopes of finding ideas for remodeling or adding a story to an existing 1 story house. The house is on a 50 x 150 lot, pretty typical for a midwestern suburb. I would say that I saw about 2 plans (out of over 200) that could conceivably be placed on such a lot. Almost all of the designs wouldn't fit on a 50 foot wide lot. And those that would typically had the garage facing the long side of the lot with a full 35-40 foot wide house facing the short side of the lot. This would only work on a corner lot, unless you have a back alley, which seems pretty rare these days. So if you're dealing with a typical city/suburb lot, this isn't a good book at all. I'd be interested to know exactly what the editors believe a "narrow" lot is.
Worthless.......2003-07-03
Tiny floor plans with a black and white drawing. No specifics or details. The plans aren't even for narrow lots. Avoid this title.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book.......2006-06-09
I bought this based on a handful of Internet recommendations I found, but I worried that it would be yet another generic oil painting book that touched on everything and taught nothing.
It's a wonderful book. It does indeed cover just about everything, but it doesn't just touch on subjects, it covers them in depth. Important subjects, very readable and understandable writing, I'd have to rate this a must have. If you're to have one book on concepts then this is it. Get others with painting demonstrations if you want, or if you need to explore a particular topic in great depth as your skills improve, but start with this one.
Chapters: 1) Basic Structural Drawing 2) Linear Perspective in Cubic Objects 3) Learning Shape Awareness 4) Understanding Values 5) Translating Values into Light and Shadow 6) Modeling the Four Basic Forms 7) Various Light Directions 8) The Behavior of Cast Shadows 9) Basic Color theory 10) How Color Functions in Realism 11) Complementary Color Sequences 12) Light, Shadow, and Texture 13) Color Perception and Harmony 14) Analogous Color Sequences 15) Advanced Color Theory 16) Composition 17) Design 18) Advanced Painting Techniques 19) Color in Landscape 20) Practical Concerns for the Artist
I feel like I can be a teacher of art after reading this!.......2003-03-06
Found this book in my local library and dind't want to return it. I don't really like Gloria Foss's paintings, but she is an amazing teacher. Very well structered, clear, very detailed, covers everything that seemed so confusing to me before. It gave me so much confidence, that I feel like I can be a teacher of art now. It's expensive, but it's the only book you need. It covers media, tools, drawing, perspective, color theory, 3-dimensional shadowing, composition, design and everything is easily understandable. The chapter on design gave me more information than a course in interior design that I took.
I'm buying it!.......2002-07-15
I got this book out of the library among many other techniques books in various mediums on painting, composition, drawing, color theory, and this one is the best and most clearly comprehensive one I've read. Pricey, but I am buying it as a reference book.
Excellent reference book for beginner or advanced........2002-05-20
It's not often one finds a book that is this usefull. Filled with good advice and examples, color and B&W, that would be usefull to beginning or experienced painters. This book refrains from trying to teach a particular style of painting. Rather it covers subjects of interest to all painters in oil. I am primarily an acrylic painter but that has never detracted from the usefullness of this book. There are chapters on structural drawing, perspective, modeling, basic and advanced color theory, composition and design, color in landscape, even "Practical concerns for the emerging artist." The color theory chapters are particularly good, with examples and exhaustive color tables to help one learn one of the most difficult parts of painting, the use of color. One may or may not like Foss's style of painting, but this book is designed to help you learn the techniques that will allow you to find your own style.
Teach yourself to paint.......2000-11-08
The writter has successfuly bring a live a classroom lesson as well as a complete guide to deal with oil painting. I've read a few other similiar book and this book had demostrate a true dedication to education than just oil painting for hobbies. I had a wonderful time reading it and learning to paint. I hope to own a copy of this book as my own.

Alphonse Mucha.......2006-04-10
Art lovers around the world recall with delight Mucha's wonderful portraits of Sarah Bernhardt. Mucha single-handedly revolutionized French poster art at the turn of the century with art nouveau advertisements for Moet & Chandon, Job, Nestle's, Benedictine brandy and "the flower of the nineties"; Monaco Monte-Carlo.
Mucha's work was an inspiration to architects and designers who adapted his style of sinuous flowers and plant motifs for designing buildings and furniture. Mucha's harmonious designs, sensitive colors and superb draughtmanship have earned him the reputation as one of the outstanding and influencial graphic artists of Europe.
This stunning and colorful book is the most accurate record of Mucha's work available. Included are 163 full-color plates, some appearing here for the first time since their original publication. A complete catalogue section contains 525 detailed and illustrated entries and an extensive bibliography of books, periodicals and exhibition catalogues.
Marina Henderson's introduction, "Women and Flowers," and Dr. Anna Dvorak's epilogue, "Illustrations for Books and Periodicals," describe with insight Mucha's life, his achievements and his philosophy.

Book Description
It looked like a great information system (IS), but all the ballyhoo didn't make it perform at the expected level. When that happens, the reason may be that technology took precedence over the human factor in system implementation. Successful implementation of information systems technology lies in managing the behavioral and organizational components of the process. Past data on this subject has involved mostly case studies, but this book provides practical information that those implementing information systems can use now. Pinto and Millet offer practical information on approaching the subject of IS from a managerial, rather than a technical, perspective. The second edition of this work covers such topics as implementation theory, prioritizing projects, implementation success and failure, critical success factors, techniques for planning and scheduling, dealing with change control pressures, system development life-cycle politics, improving the analysis and design phase, team building and cross-functional cooperation, and the MIS zoo.

Book Description
"If you want to create an enthusiastic, committed, high-performance workforce today, think democratic. Think equal. Think 'everyone's as important as I am. 'Think ping-pong tables, company picnics, and bagels for everybody. And don't keep secrets!"
-from The Human Side of High-Tech
Imagine being at a company where the workforce actually views work and fun as synonymous. A company that resembles a playground for gifted children and creates an atmosphere to generate free-flowing ideas. One that provides instant backrubs for overstressed workers and gourmet food for lunch in the office cafeteria. Welcome to the billion-dollar high-tech industry! Silicon Valley forever changed the way the high-tech industry is structured. These companies challenged conventional wisdom to find new and innovative ways to attract and retain talented employees. From the fitness center, on-site car wash, and cleaning services of Cisco Systems to an entire company vacation in Tahoe with PeopleSoft, the focus is placed on making the worker feel like a valuable member of a team. To uncover how the technology sector maximizes human potential, Carol Kinsey Goman combines extensive field research and interviews with her fifteen years of experience as a corporate consultant on change-management and leadership. Gathering information from today's leading high-tech CEOs, corporate communicators, human resource professionals, managers, and employees, this book offers a valuable look at the people practices that are effective even in this volatile industry. These leaders have developed highly successful strategies that keep gifted employees happy so the ideas and dollars keep flowing! The Human Side of High-Tech also reveals how the culture behind Silicon Valley's astonishing success can be applied to any business. These lessons will help organizations develop the policies necessary to hire the best talent available, lower the turnover rate, and find new ways to sustain cutting-edge competitiveness in the worldwide infotech arena. Ranging from the methodical to the quirky, these approaches will lead to increased employee satisfaction and productivity.
The organizations featured in this book realize that corporate success and the care for the total individual are inextricable in the high-tech corporate philosophy. Their innovative practices can be applied to any business in the areas of recruitment, retention, communication, motivation, and leadership of talented employees.
Presenting a whole new idea about people, life, and work, The Human Side of High-Tech provides the tools to create an extremely effective management model for businesses all over the world. Carol Kinsey Goman, PhD, (Berkeley, CA), is an internationally recognized expert on the human side of organizational change. As President of Kinsey Consulting Services, Goman designs organizational transformation strategies, coaches senior managers on ways to increase their effectiveness as leaders of change, and delivers over 100 speeches a year at international and corporate conferences. She has been cited as an authority in media such as Industry Week, Investor's Business Daily, CNN, and NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.
Praise for The Human Side of High-Tech
"The Human Side of High-Tech focuses on the single most critical issue for high-tech organizations today: attracting and retaining the talent that is at the core of a company's competitive advantage. Quantum's pursuit of 'extraordinary environment' has made us the first and only data storage company to appear on Fortune's '100 Best Places to Work' list and, even more importantly, has helped us cultivate the talent that has positioned Quantum as the leader in four of the six storage markets we serve."
-Michael Brown, Chairman and CEO, Quantum Corp.
"The Human Side of High-Tech isn't just for leaders of technology companies. This is a book for all managers looking to attract and retain the best and brightest in a new generation of workers."
-Robert L. Dilenschneider, CEO, The Dilenschneider Group
Customer Reviews:
The Early Stages of an Experiment.......2000-01-18
There are several reasons why I rate this book so highly. Here are three: Goman provides an in-depth analysis of HOW various high-tech companies are creating a decisive competitive advantage for themselves by attracting and keeping superior talent; she explains HOW virtually all other organizations (including companies) can do so also; finally, she explains why companies such as Lotus, Cisco Systems, Autodesk, i2 Technologies, and PeopleSoft are "still in the process of evolving." Their individual efforts merely comprise a "beginning." She concludes that "...each company, with each experiment it undertakes, adds another building block lesson learned to the collective evolutionary process." It is commendable for Goman to provide so much valuable information and commentary. It is also commendable that she includes a caution that, in the immortal words of Paul Williams, "We've only just begun."
Various "lessons" to be learned from "the technology frontier" are carefully organized and then developed. In Chapter 1, for example, Goman lists what she calls "The Eight Commandments of High-Tech Culture": 1. Egalitarianism, 2. Freedom, 3. Informality, 4. Trust, 5. Responsibility, 6. Teamwork, 7. High Performance, and 8. Fun. The challenge is to optimize all eight in the most appropriate balance. She concludes the chapter with the first of several lists of Lessons" which will inform efforts to meet that challenge.
For me, one of the most valuable chapters is Chapter 6: "Thriving on Change, Complexity, and Chaos." In it, Goman analyzes how and why several companies have succeeded amidst the "extreme volatility" of continuous restructuring by accepting "constant adaptation to new situations as a fundamental of survival and prosperity." At the end of this chapter, Goman provides another series of "Lessons" which are eminently sensible.
Goman agrees with Debra Engel (former head of HR at 3Com) that it took four hundred years for business organizations to operate successfully in the Industrial Age. "We are only beginning to understand how to operate in the "Information Age." In essence, that is the challenge which Goman's brilliant book addresses with eloquence as well as insight. I agree with her that "organizations don't change. People do -- or they don't." If all this seems relevant to you, I urge you to buy this book, read it carefully, and then review (at least every month or two) the various lists of "Lessons." If you are determined to be a change agent in your own organization and it refuses to support your efforts, I presume to suggest that you find another which will.

Issues of human-computer interaction, ethics, privacy, and security are raised to help facilitate a sociopragmatic and constuctivist understanding of IT culture.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable Resource.......2003-10-08
This book is an invaluable resource for anyone involved in creating computer-human interfaces and supporting end-users.
The Human Side of Technology.......2003-07-22
The human side of technology is crucial but has not received the dedicated attention it warrants. The field has been dominated by the "under the hood" types who are comfortable with the technology, and assume everyone else is as well. However the people who use the technology for business advantage are the "above the hood" types who require ease of use. This publication focuses on the all important human side. It's about time!
The expanding use of technology has dramatically changed the way business is conducted. IT has been democratized with an estimate excess of 1 billion humans connected on-line to the Internet. It is a startling figure when you consider there are 5.6 billion people on our planet. This book focuses on the factors that enable sound connectivity to our growing on-line community.
As computers and the software that drives them grow more powerful, they are also growing too complex for many of the IT customers to use. This book emphasizes that using Information Technology should help people accomplish tasks and not be a task in itself.
