Book Description
Attractive international projects with, by and in water.
After decades of being banished from residential areas, water is now becoming an increasingly significant feature in urban design. Whether it is the integration of natural water courses into the built environment rainwater management, the incorporation of water elements in urban areas for climatic purposes or the creation of oases of tranquility or drama such as pools or fountains – all these aspects are not only encountering renewed interest among architects and urban planners, but they are also greeted with appreciation by the general public.
This book reveals the wide variety of possibilities for using water as a creative element in the city, in art, in the landscape and architecture. Book Description
After decades of being banished from residential areas, water is now becoming an increasingly significant feature in urban design. Whether it is the use of rainwater or the integration of natural water courses into the built environment, the incorporation of water elements in urban areas for climatic purposes or the creation of oases of tranquility or drama such as pools or fountains - all these issues are not only encountering renewed interest among professionals, but they are also meeting with appreciation from the general public. Here the aspects of water as an architectural element are considered, with specialists examining its artistic potential, its use outdoors, or its role in environmental technology. 33 international projects are documented, amongst them the water management for Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, the landscaping in Harlemville, near New York, the water feature in Townsquare Kogorah, Sydney, the roof terrace for Chicago City Hall, and the landscape planning for the Solar City near Linz.Customer Reviews:

A Walk Across England: A Walk of 382 Miles in 11 Days from the West Coast to the East Coast of England
Richard Long Manufacturer: Thames & Hudson ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0500279764 |
Book Description
"My art is about making Journeys, mostly to experience different landscapes by walking through them. On this walk, across the country I was born in, I also carried a different stone along in my pocket each day, a traveling sculpture called Walking Stones."--Richard Long. Richard Long belongs to a generation of artists who from the mid-sixties helped to redefine the boundaries of art practice. By making his work simply by walking in the landscape, he brought a great increase in scale and space, as well as rich conceptual potential, to a work of art. He also found the freedom to make sculptures along the way in the different land surfaces that cover the planet.

Confessions of a Mad Magazine Junkie..........2000-06-07
Just kidding.
I remember getting all those great 25 cents (cheap) magazines with 'What Me Worry' Alfred E. Newman on the cover. That boy was either in some kinda dressing up of a recent movie, one of the Beatles, or hanging out with his 'What Me Worry' presidential prototype Richard M. Nixon. We gotta kick out of any of the Don Martin lunacy--his characters were always from the Plastic Man school of slapstick in which bodies and limbs were smooshed and squooshed into shapes whose outcome depended on what the force of impact was. A fish slap made a man's face turn into a fish.
There were the great Spy vs Spy series, Scenes We'd Like to See, and those movie and television parodies. All for 35 cents (cheap, and later adjusted for inflation).
Then, somehow me and my brothers ran into the Signet paperback issues of old Mad that we'd missed when it was edited by Harvey Kurtzman at EC Comics--talk about a goldmine. In those days the artists--the great Will Elder, Jack Davis, Wally Wood and Kurtzman himself--had each panel chocked full of idiocy, lunacy and craziness. Nothing was spared of their rubbery wits. I recall a Popeye parody done by Will Elder in which Popeye had to kick a cigar smoking, razor stubbled Swee'Pea's a--. This wasn't what one was used to seeing in the comics. I kinda miss those days...sigh!
Anyway, if you can get ahold of any of the Mad Magazine Signet paperbacks, --the earlier, the better--then, you will have found one great piece of Americana and the overall best in comic book humor.

Why Go Offshore?.......1999-10-16
Since the French Revolution, the wealthy have moved money offshore to safeguard their assets, to make a decent return, and to avoid paying taxes on their gains. There are currently some 218 jurisdictions that offer these and other special incentives to foreign investors, and many are among the best places on Earth to vacation. For example, the Caymans, three lush islands 475 miles from Miami, do not levy taxes on personal or corporate income, capital gains or your overall wealth. On top of that, the islands' financial-privacy laws can protect your assets from creditors and people who might sue you. It is indeed no wonder why the main street of this tropical paradise is lined with branches of banks from New York City, Amsterdam and Geneva.
The US government frowns on you relocating your money offshore. If everyone could invest abroad and in secrecy and never pay a dime in taxes the federal government would go broke even faster than it already is doing. It is in no way illegal to take your money offshore, even though the government has done its part to try to persuade you to not do so. Although several reporting requirements have been instituted by the government for those who do go offshore, several excellent strategies have been developed to minimize or eliminate them, and for that matter to also minimize any tax effects that such a move might entail.
Furthermore, US citizens are generally required to report income from offshore investments and to pay taxes on this income. Once again, numerous strategies have been developed to eliminate these reporting requirements so that the government will not tax your earnings at a higher rate than if your money had never left home. It is important to understand that this excessive taxation is the government's way to discourage citizens from moving funds offshore because when you move your money offshore, the government loses control.
Some strategies include elements such as chartering your own foreign bank, insurance company, corporation, or establishing a foundation or trust. An offshore corporation, bank, or insurance company is as much a legal entity as you are.

Book Description
In rural societies, passing down land and providing an education are the main ways parents assure the future welfare of their children. If, however, parents educate their sons and not their daughters and only sons inherit land, women will be worse off compared to men. Is the distribution of income and welfare between men and women changing? While many studies have documented that education of women is increasing in developing countries, evidence on changes in women's land rights is scarce. Knowing how men and women acquire land and human capital is the basis for determining the extent of this gender problem and how to solve it.
The authors of this book identify the factors affecting land inheritance and schooling across generations in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Ghana -- countries with very different social and cultural traditions. Based on household surveys at each site, the authors examine how these factors affect the distribution of income and spending in the household as a whole and among its individual members. They look at how these differences in land holdings and education affect what sons and daughters will earn over their lifetimes. To help right gender imbalances, the authors consider policies to encourage adoption of labor-intensive agricultural technologies, to extend and strengthen school systems in rural areas, to promote competition in off-farm labor markets, and to eliminate discrimination against women. The authors conclude that there is no conflict between policies to enhance the efficiency of investments in land and human capital and policies to promote gender equity.
The broad-based analysis will interest scholars in economics, anthropology, gender studies, sociology, and area studies.
