Book Description
Based on many years of personal observation, Habraken's important new book critically examines the role of the architect as a professional descendent of Palladio, and as an heir to his architectural legacy. Seven innovative and carefully crafted essays explore the widening ideological schism between today's architects whose core values, identity and education remain rooted in the Renaissance legacy of creating artful 'masterpieces', and the practical demands on a profession which acts within an evolving, ubiquitous and autonomous built environment or 'field'.
Clearly written yet expressing complex evolving ideas, this extended argument opens a new forum of debate across design theory, professional practice and academic issues. Moving the subject on from a historical perspective, Habraken shows how architects are increasingly involved in the design of everyday buildings. This must lead to a reassessment of architects' identities, values and education, and the contribution of the architect in the shaping ofthe built environment.

Wake up stArchitects .......2006-09-02
The profession of Architects is no longer that of the omnipotent beneficent; in fact it never has been, except in the reflections of our inflated egos. Habraken reminds us of this in this book, and makes a sincere appeal for architects to wake up to the reality that our profession is but a part of. He distinguishes Architecture (as what we all know it as) from the Field, which is an autonomous and ubiquitous built environment with all its life that exists and grows without the need of architects and planners. This Field is what the architectural profession has to reckon and carefully integrate with.
Book Description
Ben Elton is about to put the “real” back into Reality TV in his biting satire of one of today’s most popular cultural phenomena — the TV talent show.
95,000 hopefuls. Three judges. Just one winner.
And that’s Colin Simms, the genius behind the show.
Colin always wins, because Colin writes the rules. But this year, as he sits smugly in judgment on the mingers, clingers and blingers whom he has pre-selected in his carefully scripted “search” for a star, he has no idea that the rules are changing. The “real” is about to be put back into “reality” television, and Colin and his fellow judges (the nation’s favourite mum and the other bloke) are about to become ex-factors themselves.
From the best-selling author of
The First Casualty,
Popcorn, and
Dead Famous comes
Chart Throb. One winner. A whole bunch of losers.
From the Trade Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
Humorous and Insightful........2007-01-08
It's good to see Ben Elton returning again to the literary genre he does best - Comic Satire. Not only is Chart Throb a humorous read, it's an expose into what is commonly referred to as "Reality TV". With biting wit, Elton demonstrates in Chart Throb (a fictitious Pop Idol / X Factor "talent" quest) just how contrived, manipulative and scripted these kinds of shows really are. Not to mention the huge revenues collected from the millions of chumps prepared to spend money each week phone voting for their favorite performer.
Enjoyable, very similar to "Dead Famous".......2006-12-20
Unlike Dead Famous, this is not a mystery, but it is a comic novel set in the world of reality television, mocking the pretensions and idiocy of the competitors and maligning the cynicism of the producers. It's entertaining and, given Elton's background, feels a little bit like an expose of the television industry, which makes it even more fun.

Young Love and Primeval Danger!.......2005-04-16
Coley Vol.3 collects the last 2 mini-series from Eros to date, and what a contrast they are!
In HARD THROB, Coley, having returned to Seaside, CA., divides his time between shooting a porn movie and finding new sexual conquests on the streets and in back alleys. But the unexpected occurs when he meets Cort, a young man just coming of age to whom the attraction may be more than just sex. Some of the dialogue in the later part of this story is a bit awkward, but this actually works as a reflection of how Coley, though extremely street-wise and worldly, has been suppressing truly deep emotions for too many years.
The follow-up, DAGGER OF BLOOD, stands as the WILDEST Coley adventure to date! Harry, Coley, Lon & the film crew travel down to South America to do a film on location, but Harry has an ulterior motive for going. The cult from IDOL OF FLESH has sprung up again, and Harry decides the best way to handle them is to face them head-on, rather than waiting to be picked off at someone's leisure. This proves a far more dangerous and ill-advised course than anyone could have imagined, and before it's over they become prisoners of the cult, whose members include an insane ex-Nazi surgeon who combines science & sorcery in shocking & unspeakable ways.
Meanwhile, Coley is reunited with Kit (last seen in THE DEATHSNAKE) in one of the most beautifully-drawn scenes in the entire series. He also gets hot-and-heavy with their guide, Danny, and the eventual 3way with Coley & Lon is one of the HOTTEST scenes ever. Then things turn strange... and then NASTY.
I had to read this all the way through twice before I was really sure what was going on between part 2 & 3. I strongly suspect a couple of pages were somehow lost before the initial printing, and if so, this collection-- which could have fleshed things out better-- doesn't. The entire story is there, if you read the text carefully, but the capture of Lon & Danny by the cult really should have been SHOWN, not merely described verbally. If I were publishing this, I'd have requested John Blackburn add a few extra pages in to allow the story to flow better.
Despite this, DAGGER OF BLOOD remains one of my favorite of all Coley stories. Blackburn's art reached a new peak here, and the sex scenes are just amazing. With a busy schedule, I barely have time to read anything more than once these days, but I've read this at least 3 TIMES so far. Now, if only John would do a follow-up regarding the fate of Lon & Kit...!!!

Book Description
They say the star that burns twice as bright burns half as long; in the case of Rex Mantooth!, he burned five or six times as bright for, like, ten minutes or so. Ape Super-Spy Rex Mantooth! blazed across three stories to inexplicable critical acclaim. These blistering bits of nonsense are now lavishly collected with corrected and re-toned art, the official text, covers, essays, scripts, annotations, pinups, and more. Featuring a foreword, a preface, an introduction, and publisher's note by some of comics' most notable luminaries and more exclusive material than anyone can possibly imagine. THE ANNOTATED MANTOOTH! is exactly like a DVD about a museum that's full of Monkey comics about stuff that 'splodes and dudes gettin' kicked. It's like if James Bond's a gorilla and Ian Fleming was drunk the whole time he wrote James Bond. With contributions from Warren Ellis, Joe Casey, Larry Young, Robert Kirkman, and Jeremy Love.
Customer Reviews:
ALMOST AS AWESOME AS FAMILY CIRCUS........2005-12-07
If Jeffy from Family Circus were a talking super-spy gorilla in a tuxedo, Family Circus would be a much different comic strip. Jeffy from Family Circus is not a gorilla.
I think there's a gorilla in The Annotated Mantooth! That's crazy. I would not let a real gorilla into my house; but a book gorilla, maybe that's OK.
Matt Fraction has written some other comics, and he invented those mesh half-shirt things that dudes used to wear in the 80s. Does he speak Russia? I will not tell you that. You will have to answer that question on your own time.
Matt Fraction has never written Family Circus. Because of this, Mama Fraction does cry herself to sleep at night.
He's a monkey AND a spy. What's not to love?.......2003-12-03
This concept is just too great not to give it a try. Mantooth is an international man of mystery AND he's a big ape, literally. He's also got a giant robot named "world's greatest grandpa" and saves the world many times. Andy Kuhn is rapidly becoming one of the hottest illustrators in comics and this is a breakout work for him. That Fraction guy ain't bad neither.
Hilarious!.......2003-09-09
This book is great!
This graphic novel has Matt Fraction's annotated script side-by-side with the actual comic pages. Andy Kuhn and Tim Fisher provide the art on the comic pages, and it is excellent!
Rex Mantooth, Kung-Fu Gorilla is a secret agent who saves the world again and again with the help of his sidekick (and special lady friend), Honey Hamptonwick. They battle robot ninjas, rabid mallard ducks, lesbian she-commandos, zombie scientists, and even Hitler!
Fraction's notes on the script are just as funny, and sometimes funnier, as the actual comic pages.
There are three text pages by Fraction, one after every chapter of the main story, and a pin-up gallery in the back of the book, with pin-ups by Jeremy Love, Steven Sanders and Carla Speed McNeil.
Finally, the book also features an introduction by Warren Ellis, a foreward by Joe Casey, a preface by Greg Rucka AND a note from the publisher by Larry Young!
With all of that great supplementary material, you know this book must be important, so buy it!
Save your money........2003-07-09
If you happen to be 12 or just like to pretend you are, this is the perfect book for you. Following the premise that monkeys apprently bring inherent humour to the table, The Annotated Mantooth seems to've felt no need to be inventive beyond that, unless you think using an endless amount of swear words to make up for paper-thin writing is inventive. I suppose this book is a riot if you happen to be one of the people involved in its creation, but for anyone else, spend your money elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-05-20
This book offers one-stop shopping for the nonprofit organization in need of money, political influence, credibility, free labor and all of the other benefits that members can bring. Not only does the book provide abundant information on recruiting members, it also offers, free and online, copies of forms and worksheets you can use to help advance your organization's membership campaign. It begins at the beginning, explaining what membership is. This may sound self-evident, but the very definition of membership has some surprising twists. This book will save you from making some very obvious mistakes - such as failing to convert people who contact you into members. It's a straightforward, no-nonsense workbook with excellent samples and examples. If you are an executive, board member, staffer or volunteer at a nonprofit, we offer its congratulations: at last, here's the right book for you.
NonProfit Membership Toolkit.......2003-08-26
This book gets my highest praise for putting a lot of valuable information into one easy to navigate source. My book is marked up with highlighter and sticky notes! Although I don't work for an "environmental" nonprofit, I found that the insight and experience easily translates into my field (long term care for the elderly). Very, very good. I highly recommend to all development/fundraising professionals and volunteers.
The Bible for Non-Profit Funding Through Membership.......2003-08-21
In today's tough economic times, just about every non-profit needs help raising money. Members are one of the best sources of long-term funding and support for non-profits and this book tells all. A fantasic how-to-do-it guide to setting up and running a membership program. Lots of examples, worksheets, and - my favorite - practical tips and samples of results-producing membership letters. You can literally give this book to the person in charge of membership and they will know exactly what to do. Just about every non-profit has lots of room for improvment in the membership area. This book is packed with tips and advice from THE leader in membership development and fund raising, Ellis Robinson. You will not find a more passionate person to help your non-profit do a better job and be more successful.
Membership Guru Tells All!.......2003-07-24
Ellis Robinson has helped hundreds of non-profits increase their memberships, both as a trainer and an employee. She's reached almost mythical status for building the membership of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy from 400 to 60,000 in three years. Now she shares her secrets in this easy-to-use guide. Whether you're a new community non-profit or an established national organization, The Nonprofit Membership Toolkit will give you a wealth of information to boost your ranks--especially important in this time of diminishing foundation grants. Ellis doesn't just give you the techniques. She also underscores the importance of developing your organization so that new members will want to renew their support. Her methods are well-rooted in community organizing, with emphasis on one-on-one recruitment, board involvement, and member participation. However, what really sets this book apart from other fundraising books is its use of materials from non-profit groups. Ellis has collected fundraising letters, brochures, surveys, membership plans, etc. from organizations in every corner of the country and presents the cream of the crop as models for your own use. The book is laid out well, with each chapter focusing on one aspect of membership development. As a professional fundraiser, I turn to The Nonprofit Membership Toolkit frequently to answer questions, inspire me to write yet another fundraising letter, or give me new ideas to try. I recommend The Nonprofit Membership Toolkit wholeheartedly to anyone involved with a non-profit organization.
