Book Description

Similar in format to the Electaarchitecture title, "Twenty Houses by Twenty Architects," this volume presents a series of case studies of different interpretations of one building type. The author's introduction provides an overview of the history of railway architecture, citing its most significant developments. Individual project documentation begins with the Gare de L'Est in Paris, the first major railway station of the nineteenth century. Grand Central Terminal in New York City, of 1903-13, is documented through archival material, including engineering drawings and period photographs, as well as contemporary photographs revealing the major restoration project of the 1990s. Several contemporary stations that have reinvigorated the building type include the Santa Justa station in Seville by Antonio Cruz and Antonio Oritz, the a station in Kyoto by Hiroshi Hara, the Lyon TGV Station by Santiago Calatrava, and the Arnhem Station by Dutch architects Ben von Berkel and Caroline Bos of UN Studio, one of the leading firms of today.

5 out of 5 stars Focusing on the architecture and evolution of the railway station over 100 years of changing designs.......2005-11-08

Railway fans always receive plenty of train books to contemplate - this offers a difference, focusing on the architecture and evolution of the railway station over 100 years of changing designs. Sixteen stations in nine countries are examined with an eye to considering historical precedent, the evolution of railway architecture, and the influence of station design on rail operations. Gorgeous, oversized full-page color photos capture the stations in profile, add charts where appropriate, and provides an exceptional visual display. Perfect not just for rail buffs, but for fans of transportation architecture in general.

Book Description

Programming and Problem Solving with C++, Fourth Edition provides an accessible introduction to C++ and object-oriented programming. With straightforward examples and complete case studies, this text helps readers develop good programming habits right from the start. Both algorithmic development and functional decomposition design methodology are emphasized. Function interface design, modular design, data abstraction, and abstract data types are explored in a supportive teaching style. The text discusses metalanguages explicitly, introduces Big-O notation early, and guides students through the C++ classes, encapsulation, information hiding, and object-oriented software development. A chapter on templates and exceptions enables the reader to maximize their potential and master topics once considered too advanced for beginner students.

Featuring new exercises and updated problem-solving cases studies throughout, Programming and Problem Solving with C++, Fourth Edition is the essential text for your introductory programming courses.

1 out of 5 stars not the best book for beginners.......2007-09-17

I had to get this book for a class. Luckily, I had previous experience with C++. If you aren't required to buy this for a class, don't get it. There's too much jargon, not enough explaining, and poor examples.

We don't even review it in class. Not one bit. We might do a review every now and then, but other than that, the instructor steers clear of this book for good reason.

3 out of 5 stars A good book but you need more.......2007-08-04

I am an intelligent, Ivy educated person who took Intro. to C++ and the professor used this book.

This book had me from Chapters 1-5 but when it started Chapter 6 (Looping) that was when I decided this book was not for me.

While the book is written well, my complaint it that it goes into too much nitty-gritty detail. Every rule and EVERY exception is covered in this book. I think they could have left some of this out and made the Chapters shorter and easier to read.

But my real complaint with this book is that the theory in the text DID NOT help me with the lab assignments. While I gained a general understanding of the material, I was unable to successfully complete the lab assignments. That is due to the lack of real-world examples in this book.

Long story short, this is not a bad book to learn C++, but you definitely need more resources to round out your knowledge.

1 out of 5 stars Confusing and difficult to understand for beginners in C++.......2006-10-15

I am a computer science major and after reading this book I was confused. Programming in C++ for the first time can lead to many errors for beginners and seeking help from this book is not the solution. I had to visit my professor everyday after class just to understand how to program in C++, which made this book useless. I read the book over and over, the more I read it the more confused I got. I have thought about giving up in pursuing my major after reading this book. Try to avoid teachers who uses this book, it is not for beginners.

2 out of 5 stars OK, I guess.......2004-12-17

This book is OK, but it leaves a lot to be desired. For some reason the author has 2 different chapters on looping; it would make more sense to put them into one chapter ("while" loops in chapter 6 and "do while" and "for" loops in chapter 9...). Most of the examples used are convoluted or even as the author puts it "nonsensical." The author also has a tendency to ramble on. There is lots of additional text printed here. Chapters often span 50 pages, but maybe only 80% is really worth spending a lot of time on. Oh, this book also falls in the "expensive" catagory... $80+ for a paperback???

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to C++.......2004-12-03

This book is a good introduction to C++.

I read quite a few reviews that this book doesn't cover everything on C++. One can no more expect a complex language like C++ to be covered in one installment then say a subject such as physics. Programming and Problem Solving with C++ is meant to be an introduction into C++. It isn't intended as the definitive guide for the language. The authors do an adaquate job introducing the syntax and basic commands.

I would recomend this book to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Data Structures, but helps to have a good prof!.......2007-08-21

A good, clearly written book, although there are a few mistakes in the code given. Still, it covers some tough topics in a clear and concise way. Still, it's not a book I wouldn't tackle without some guidance from a class!

2 out of 5 stars Great in concept, poor in execution.......2004-10-31

I teach a graduate level data structures course at a Big 10 university, and reviewed this text over the summer to use in my course. The text covers all the basics - lists, linked lists, hashes, graphs, trees, and all with good OO foundations. In my review, this book hit on all cylinders. However, I am looking at it with many, many years experience in teaching and in data structures, and frankly made the mistake of 'skimming' the book to make sure that everything I wanted to cover was in there.

    Then class started...

The book, while going through all the motions, fails to execute well. Diagrams have mistakes in them, algorithms are wrong, code samples don't work... I have had to do quite a bit of damage control with my class, and will not be using this book next term. I now have guilt that my students were stuck paying for this book, and can't sell it back for students in future terms.

(A note to faculty - the supporting material is... OK. The test banks are mediocre, and also have errors in them, and the lecture materials contain all the errors also found in the book)

So, the bottom line: All the basics are there, but this is not a winning book. Perhaps the second edition will be better?

      Book Description

Programming and Problem Solving with Java™ is an excellent resource for discovering Java as a first programming language. After introducing the very basics of programming, the text provides detail on Java syntax, semantics, classes and objects, and then continues with coverage of arithmetic expressions, selection and encapsulation, file objects and looping statements, and object oriented software design and implementation. With an unparalleled clarity of expression, the authors then introduce inheritance, polymorphism, and scope, as well as event-driven input and output, arrays, and recursion. Through the case studies, exercises, and programming examples, readers develop a secure foundation for future study, and a true understanding of what an object is, how it works, and what constitutes a well-designed class interface.

When purchased new, the book includes the Student Resource Disk for Java, a CD-ROM that features the following:

      Borland® JBuilder™ 7 Personal
      The Sun Java™ 2 SDK Standard Edition v. 1.4.1
The Sun Java™ SDK Standard Edition Documentation

2 out of 5 stars The CS Department dropped this one quickly.......2003-11-15

The last 2 Intro to Programming through Java textbooks have been horrible, and this is one of them. The typos alone have caused many headaches during study and while trying to finish the work book exercises. This is a good "flip through" book at a bookstore, but not really worth buying to keep on your bookshelf.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you want to learn Java!.......2002-02-28

The authors follow the outline they used to write their C++ book, and it just doesn't seem to work for Java. They usually provide one programming example in each chapter. Many times it is the same ole program enhanced. There really NEEDS to be more programming examples to reinforce and to show how to apply the programming techniques presented in the chapter. They use the same programming problem exercises they published in their C++ book. Java is more of a GUI language. It is not like the "black screen" algorithm, mathematical equation programming language that their C++ book teaches. Maybe these people are not Java programmers, but textbook writers, and this was the easiest way to produce a Java textbook. I guess you could say these authors have perfected the "turnkey" method for writing a programming language textbook. Many, and I mean many of the programs printed in the text have errors or typos. Swing is not covered. The authors do not provide a CD. This is a very expensive ... misstake. Don't buy this book if you want to learn Java. Buy the Sun Java books or go to the Sun website and go through the tutorials and documentation. The "Java Black Book" is a good reference if you have a specific question or need further explanation on using a technique or function. There are other Java websites that will teach you Java better than this book does.

this book have a simple introduction on software design by using java programming language. The content in this book is not too much for a biginner, but not really good enough for advanced study. I suggest readers to review this book in one bookstore and then decide if you wanna buy it. Maybe you would have known most of the content of the book while in the store.

But no Gadget! Or Monterey Jack, or Zipper either, for that matter. They make appearances in the book, but have no instructions on how to draw them, so as a consequence, this is really just a "How To Draw Chip 'n Dale" book.

If you already know how to draw Chip and Dale, just add a colorful Hawaiian shirt on Dale and a leather jacket and fedora on Chip, and you've got it. It would have been a lot nicer if it had included instructions for the other characters from the show, as well as our favorite rodent sleuths and duck tormentors.

Ah well, still a must-have for the collector.

          Book Description

Programming and Problem Solving with Ada 95 provides a solid introduction to programming while introducing the capabilities of Ada 95 and its syntax without overwhelming the student. The book focuses on the development of good programming habits. This text offers superior pedagogy that has long defined computer science education, including problem solving case studies, testing and debugging sections, quick checks, exam preparation, programming warm-up exercises, and programming problems. The extensive coverage of material in such a student-friendly resource, means that more rigor, more theory, greater use of abstraction and modeling, and the earlier application of software engineering principles can be employed.

Well, recently completed my computer science course in Data Structures, this was one of the 2 books we used. John McCormick happens to be the teacher, and one of the Co-Authors of both books we used. I found the book to be pretty good in giving you some understanding of the language, and towards the end of class, me and some fellow classmates agreed with John on the fact that Ada would probably be a better first language for Colleges to use, since it really helps with building good habits simply with how the language is desinged.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2001-07-03

We had to buy this book as part of our university degree to help us learn the Ada Language. While it seems a little daunting at first it does a really good job at what it is for and that is to teach people how to program in Ada. :) The appendix at the back is extremely useful as is the index giving a clear and quick way to locate important information. Sometimes the book doesn't go into enough detail that you will find useful but overall it does a pretty good job.

                    Book Description

Information Systems for Health Care Enterprises, 3rd Edition is an introduction to health care information systems for students of information systems and health care administration and for professionals responsible for information systems in health care enterprises. The reader becomes quickly immersed in the challenging issues of health care information systems.

The book has sixteen chapters that are grouped into 7 main parts as follows: 1. Challenges and Design, 2. Providers and Payers, 3. Compliance and Fraud, 4. Networks and Transactions, 5. Privacy and Security, 6. Personnel and Vendors, and 7. Knowledge and Diffusion. The reader is asked to address the issues that should lead to the ability to do the following as regards health information systems: 1. identify needs for development of health information systems, 2. manage a design team, 3. delineate the typical components of a health information system and how they are integrated in new systems spanning diverse organizations, 4. identify the people who create and use information systems, and 5. anticipate the factors that determine whether or not a system will be adopted by its users and thus diffuse through the target population. The book goes into detail about the Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. These provisions have been deemed the most important influence on information systems in American health care. They require standardization of provider-payer transactions and privacy and security of protected health information. The book also explains how fraud occurs and the role of information systems in fighting fraud. While many books examine the staff involved in health care information systems, few consider in detail the role of information technology vendors and consultants, as this book does. While the focus is on provider organizations, particularly hospitals, fair attention is given to health insurance companies. The book is used in teaching university students and includes tools for facilitating instruction.

                      Product Description

The healthcare industry in the United States consumes roughly 20% of the gross national product per year. This huge expenditure not only represents a large portion of the countrys collective interests, but also an enormous amount of medical information. Information intensive healthcare enterprises have unique issues related to the collection, disbursement, and integration of various data within the healthcare system. Information Systems and Healthcare Enterprises provides insight on the challenges arising from the adaptation of information systems to the healthcare industry, including development, design, usage, adoption, expansion, and compliance with industry regulations. Highlighting the role of healthcare information systems in fighting healthcare fraud and the role of information technology and vendors, this book will be a highly valued addition to academic, medical, and health science libraries.

                            Book Description

No other book on the market covers both the broad, practical scope of information systems applications in health care and at the same time brings the latest advances in administrative simplification and fraud control to the forefront. While the focus is on provider organizations, and particularly hospital information systems, fair attention is given to health insurance operations and other components of the health care enterprise. The book is used in teaching university students and includes numerous tools for facilitating instruction.

                            Audience and Related Work

This book Information Systems for Health Care Enterprises is an introduction to health care information systems for people with some background in health care and information systems. While no particular knowledge of the reader is expected, the book does not comprehensively define the most basic concepts of either health care or information systems. Instead, the reader can expect to become immersed quickly into the challenging issues of getting information systems to work in health care organizations.

Many books have been written about health information systems with usually a distinct audience in mind each time. For instance, one can find books for

                            * physicians with practical tips on how to use computers in the private office. * Chief Information Officers on strategies for implementing enterprise-wide systems * nursing students on support systems in the hospital that nurses use to help patient care, and * medical students on computer-supported diagnosis.

This book is for students of information systems and of health care administration and for professionals responsible for decisions about information systems in health care enterprises.

                            Content

The book has twelve chapters. These are grouped into five main parts as follows: * Requirements and Design * Providers and Payers * Regulation * Personnel and Vendors * Integration and Diffusion The reader is asked to address the issues that should lead to the ability to do the following as regards health information systems: 1. identify needs for development of health information systems, 2. design the high-level structures and functions needed for a health information system, 3. delineate the typical components of a health information system and how they are integrated in new systems spanning diverse organizations, 4. identify the people who create and use information systems, and 5. anticipate the factors that determine whether or not a system will be adopted by its users and thus diffuse through the target population. The book goes into detail about the Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. These provisions have been deemed the most important influence on information systems in American health care. They require standardization of provider-payer transactions and privacy of protected health information. The book also explains how fraud occurs and the role of information systems in fighting fraud. Most books on health information systems focus on providers to the exclusion of health plans or payers. This book has a separate chapter on health plans that examines their function and sample applications. While many books examine the staff involved in health care information systems, few consider in detail the role of information technology vendors and consultants, as this book does. This book focuses on the United States health care system. Health care systems vary around the world with many systems being more government-owned than the American system. Ownership naturally has major ramifications for finance and policy. Nationalization of health care leads to greater uniformity of health practice and creates a foundation for certain computerization. At the same time, nationalization removes free-market competition and thus also the incentive to improve market competitiveness by computerization. Despite its great, unruly diversity, the American health care system is in many ways at the forefront in computerization.

                            Style

Every chapter begins with a Main Points list and ends with Questions. The `Questions' are divided into `Reading Questions' and `Doing Questions'. `Reading Questions' only ask the reader to reflect on what was presented in this book. The `Doing Questions' challenge the reader to go beyond the book to present new information and insights. The book includes over one hundred references.

5 out of 5 stars Great breadth and depth of coverage - a rare combination.......2002-10-20

This book, despite its deceivingly small size (210 pages), is a treasure of information about information systems for health care enterprises.

The first telling sign is the author's qualifications: an MD and a PhD ... in computer science. Most books I have looked at take one angle or the other (health care vs. information systems), but none has the depth of understanding of the issues involved, including human aspects, organizational aspects, and technical ones.

Health care enterprises have inherent complexities that make information system implementations complex and fraught with danger. The author understands that, but more importantly, understands how that impacts the development of information systems to support health care organizations (see e.g. chapter 3). Most of the chapters discuss the issues surrounding a particular aspect of information systems (human, organizational, cost, regulatory, legal), and how those issues impact information system development.

The case studies, historical notes, and personal experiences of the authors are both entertaining and enlightening.

The technical discussions are equally profound and detailed. The author's computer research background gives him a unique perspective, not afforded by many other authors. He is able to demystify "hot" technologies with straightforward explanations, and down to earth expectations.

This book is a must read for both health care professionals who wish to embark on a major information system initiative and who would like to understand the technical issues, but I would definitely make it a required reading for information systems analysts who intend to enter the health care arena.

                                      Book Description

Security of land tenure for the urban poor is fast becoming one of the major problems for developing cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Based on extensive research this book presents and analyses the main conclusions of a comparative research program on land tenure issues. Based on extensive case studies, it gives a comparative perspective of land tenure at a global level. It looks at how solutions can be found and implemented to respond to the demands and needs of the majority of urban households living in informal settlements, and analyses how urban stakeholders, under particular social, legal and economic constraints, are devising and employing innovative and flexible responses.
"Holding Their Ground" fills a gap in the current literature on comparative research on tenure policies and will be invaluable to researchers, and professionals involved in defining and instigating tenure upgrading policies and programs.
