Description:
The construction industry has both positive and negative repercussions on the environment. One of the main negative impacts is the generation of waste. Various types of instruments exist to manage construction and demolition wastes (C&DW). These include voluntary agreements between economic agents, planning, and technological development applied to specific projects. The present state of C&DW management is different in each country and/or region, and is determined by the management instruments used and the degree to which their content has been developed. As elsewhere, the rise of the construction sector in the Community of Madrid in recent years has brought about a notable increase in the generation of C&DW. In order to deal with this situation, the Autonomous Government has initiated several management instruments, including the Plan for Integrated Management of C&DW in the Community of Madrid (2002-2011). At the same time, some construction companies have implemented an environmental management system (EMS) in accordance with ISO Standard 14001, with a view to controlling the main environmental aspects associated with their activities, such as the generation of waste. These companies have established practical measures for the appropriate management of waste generated in their work centres and sites, whether permanent or temporary. This paper presents results of an analysis and evaluation of the application of ISO Standard 14001 to construction sites in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, with specific regard to practices of control and management of wastes generated on site, and to the fulfilment of legislation on waste management. The study aims to detect the deficiencies of EMS and current waste management instruments, and to determine the measures which may be necessary for improvement at all territorial levels (autonomous, national and supranational). In addition, some recommendations are made for promoting management of C&DW based on reuse and recycling in construction companies.

Book Description
In Waste Land, photographer David T. Hanson presents a picture of our environment that is unfamiliar and deeply disturbing. It is, however, a picture that must be looked at and contended with if our environment is to survive. In the words of the writer Wendell Berry, Hanson has "given us the topography of our open wounds." Waste Land is a powerful book that will not permit us to turn our backs on the declining state of our environment.
During the past fifteen years of his career as an artist/photographer, Hanson has documented-- often in aerial photographs that are deceptively, inexorably beautiful-- some of the devastations that humans have inflicted and continue to impose upon the environment. Each of the four photographic series in this book provides a different look at the consequences of our actions.
Waste Land opens with a series of photographs of strip mines in Colstrip, Montana that Hanson created in the early 1980s, a series he describes as "a chronicle of entropy, an elegy for a lost landscape." Beginning with photographs depicting trailer parks and company houses-- void of any human presence-- the vantage point moves upwards through images of the community's mine, power plant, and industrial site, to aerial shots that become increasingly abstract. Ultimately, the series reveals Colstrip as arena and metaphor for the use, misuse, and abuse of power.
Hanson's Minuteman Missile Sites series focuses on one aspect of the American industrial and military landscape: bleak aerial views of silos, each containing a missile with a destructive potential nearly a hundred times that of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. These images disclose some of America's secret landscapes; they mirror in both form and content the military's applications of photography for surveillance and targeting.
The harrowing centerpiece of this book is Hanson's Waste Land series. In 1982, from some 400,000 toxic sites throughout the U.S.A., the Environmental Protection Agency listed 418 as highly hazardous and in need of urgent attention. In only a few years, that number more than tripled. Waste Land is a study of sixty-seven of the most dangerously polluted waste sites in the United States. In this series of triptychs, Hanson juxtaposes an aerial photograph, a modified topographic map, and an EPA site description exposing some of the elaborate legal strategies that corporations and individuals have used to avoid taking responsibility for the contamination-- or the cleanup.
The book's final sequence is devoted to Hanson's recent series, ironically entitled "The Treasure State": Montana 1889-1989. Here, the photographer begins with an aerial view of a site that affects one of Montana's imperiled species, and overlays each image with a sheet of glass, discreetly etched with the name of the impacted animal. Perhaps the most visually abstract series in the book, "The Treasure State" features haunting, intensely colorful images that lure the viewer in, only to be struck by the realization that a vital and sustaining element of this landscape is on the brink of disappearing.
Waste Land includes an Afterword by Mark Dowie, author of 1995's Losing Ground: American Environmentalism at the Close of the Twentieth Century. In his text, Dowie explores the historical mutability of our country's policies toward the environment. The book also features poignant commentary by Susan Griffin, William Kittredge, Peter Montague and Maria B. Pellerano, and Terry Tempest Williams.
"The power of these photographs is in their terrifying, because undeniable, particularity....What we can see in these vandalized and perhaps irreparable landscapes we are obliged to understand as symbolic of what we cannot see: the steady seeping of poison into our world and our bodies."--Wendell Berry, in the Preface to this book
Customer Reviews:
These Places Are Great.......2001-03-23
Having worked in the heavy industrial electrical/mechanical field for the past 26 years, I have worked at many facilities similiar to those illustrated in this book. I love them! You can say what you'd like regarding their environmental impact, but I can tell you, these are great places to work. The process is usually very interesting, and the customer most always demands a quality job. So...there's some polution, but not one of you reading this review can say that your purchasing habits, and style of life has not contributed to the very images that you would now turn your nose up at. Sure, the EPA would love to have you believe that they are cleaning up the world, when the fact is, they are only driving real industry out of the USA, only to produce the same if not more 'polution' over the borders. And with our governments blessing. 'Still buying the same products, are you not? Look and see where they were made next time! It makes me sad to see these big industrial sites closed down. I love the book, because I can show my kids, and my grandkids the types of places that used to exist in this country_The type of places that has enabled us to go around as the police department of the world, and enforce what WE deem as right on every continent of the earth. It would have made a nice closing statement though, if you would have included an arial shot of the Pulp & Paper Mill that produced the pages of this book. I am assuming that is, that they were made in the USA.

Customer Reviews:
a cool and creepy book.......2007-08-13
this book is about a school that somehow gets sent into the future. and boy is it a bleak future. the kids have to learn to survive on thier own in this alternate universe. its quite violent as the kids commit murder and other acts of violence.
A compelling start.......2007-01-15
Kazuo Umezu is the godfather of horror manga; Junji Ito, Suehiro Maruo and even the great Osamu Tezuka have admitted to being influenced by him at some time. He's legendary in his neighborhood, and thought of as a good luck charm (as told in this books "epilogue"-type ending), and...he's nearly always smiling! After this reading, I'm wondering what it is that he is so in love with.
This is a simple story (so far) that is driven through a tense psychology and plenty of violence (which grows to more, or so I hear). If you're reading this, you're probably already interested and know the story, so I'll skip that. I would like to say that this manga, overall, is a great start, albeit with a few flaws, some of which are hard to overlook.
VIZ publishes well, no doubt. A right-to-left format, as the Japanese are accustomed to, and no noticible censoring (as we're told with the "warning" sticker telling us tha this is intended for mature readers (and it is!)). However, there are a few drawbacks, the most notable being the decision to translate the original sound effects (which are always in katakana) into english (such as NB becoming GYAAA!). Personally, I find it distracting and unauthentic. With most manga these days being presented in the most "Japanese" way possible, its a bit odd to see why VIZ choose to do this, yet try to keep things authentic with the right-to-left format.
Another small complaint is the shading. This publication is over thirty years old, and it shows. VIZ has done a pretty good job of restoring what they can, but the smaller panels here look very, very grainy, which mildly upsets me, because Kazz is a wonderful artist!
After not knowing much about this series, I've come to the conclusion that it's sucked me in enough to want the next volume (which I'll be rushing out to get soon!) and to continue with every release from this wonderful manga-ka. The minor set backs, the ones mentioned above as well as the fact that this is relatively cheap paper (though its cost is low, so my complaint is rounded yet again), are definitely overshadoed by a strong, psychological story and verbose and sometimes gory imagery. This is a fine start to a series and recommended to all horror fans!
A BIT TOO DELIBERATE PACE.......2006-10-07
"The Drifting Classroom" from VIZ Communications is the first in a new Manga series from horror master Kazuo Umezu. It's cover states that it has explicit content but that's a bit of an overstatement. This book is PG13 at the very worst. The book centers on a 6th grade student named Sho who is a bit of a brat to say the least. He's always fighting with his mother who wants him to grow up and be more responsible. The pair have a huge fight before school as Sho dashes off to avoid being late, and later regretting the harsh words he had for his mother...and they may end up being the last words he ever says to her. Soon a catastrophic event strikes the school...and earthquake or maybe an explosion. Whatever it was, it left a great, big hole where the elementary school used to be and no trace of the school or children.
Hearing the explosion, Sho's mother runs to the school and is shocked along with the rest of the parents at the large crater where the school had once been. But they are not nearly as shocked as the students and teachers who find the school still intact, but surrounded on all sides by...nothing. Just endless miles of sand and rock, desolation all around. Panic overtakes the students as the teachers and principal try to keep order. The phones, television, and radio are all out as the teachers lie to the kids in order to keep them calm.
Umezu's story reads like an episode of the Twilight Zone but unfortunately bogs down in the second half of the book. The school disappears relatively early on in the story and the last ¾ of the book is all about the kids being in a panic as some try to leave the school, only to end up unconscious (or worse) in the desolate wastes. So basically you end up with about a 100 pages of crying, whining kids and few questions answered. What happened to the school? How did it disappear? Where is it now? I guess we'll have to wait to future issues to find out. On the plus side, Umezu's art is always solid and enjoyable. We'll see where we go from here...

Book Description
CTR's 245-page report addresses the forces and technologies shaping the information technology (IT) industry as it moves into the 21st century and focuses on how an organization's IT function must change to meet new business needs. The report details how the information systems (IS) function in an organization must now implement technologies and strategies that add business value.
Information Technology: A Changing Business Environment
As information technology (IT) developments continually enable new business applications, success of organizations worldwide has become increasingly dependent on the effective creation, distribution, and use of information and knowledge. CTR's new report, Information Technology: Converging Strategies and Trends for the 21st Century, examines how information systems (IS) must now implement technologies and strategies that add business value, rather than simply automating old processes.
The report addresses the forces and technologies shaping the IT industry as it moves into the 21st century, with a focus on how an organization's IT function must change to meet new business needs. The report covers important technologies such as: knowledge management, IT infrastructure solutions, E-commerce, the Internet and intranets, and data warehousing.
Infrastructure Solutions
Most IS managers cannot afford the luxury of waiting for comprehensive infrastructure solutions. Instead, they must solve their management and administrative problems by implementing solutions now, anticipating a more comprehensive, enterprisewide solution for the long run.
The report covers various infrastructure issues, including the problems with Microsoft's Windows NT, the dominance of Intel, desktop systems management, and the four desktop computing choices: NetPCs, network computers (NCs), low-cost PCs, and high-end PCs.
Also included is a discussion of operating system (OS) management, response time issues, and database management systems (DBMS).
The Future of IT
IT is experiencing a convergence of applications, content, and interactivity. But despite recent, far-reaching changes in the information technology (IT) arena, the job of IT departments remains the same: to provide the technological foundations for a company's business processes. The critical information provided in the report will help IS managers: understand the move towards decentralization; learn how to achieve an effective return on investment (ROI); utilize the Internet, intranets, and the Web as business tools; choose an effective client/server (C/S) systems solution; develop an infrastructure strategy; and guide their organization into the 21st century.
Given all the available technologies, there are many new opportunities for IS in developing different types of applications and determining new ways of doing business. In this period of rapid change, IS managers must be prepared for the technological requirements of future business trends. CTR's Information Technology: Converging Strategies and Trends for the 21st Century report is an invaluable resource to aid in this process.

Complete checklist for home inspection of houses or condos........2006-06-13
I own a very successful home inspection business in California. We use all of this authors products to train my staff since they are the by far the best products for real estate training on the market. We originally found out about these products through excellent book reviews in the local real estate publications. In the past I had contacted this book's author for some advice on different areas of the business. From that we learned the following details and decided to purchase the whole "Real Estate From A to Z" series by this author:

Great checklist to inspect any home top to bottom........2006-06-08
This book is designed to be a checklist to inspect a house or condominium and that's what I use it for. It covers every aspect of the home with great detail and enables me to make sure I don't miss anything.
The book is not meant to be a training manual to become a home inspector. Rather this book contains a very detailed checklist to be used by a professional inspector or a homeowner.
I found the sections were very easy to follow and understand. The book has all the necessary and essential components and specifications listed so I don't forget something nor overlook anything important.
So if you need a checklist for checking out real estate then this is a great choice. At $16.95 you can't go wrong and the information it has can save you a lot of money and headaches down the road.
If you need a book that teaches you how to inspect homes (rather than a checklist) then this book's publisher has inspection and appraisal books I found to be the most comprehensive on the market.
EXTREMELY basic, and not in a good sense.......2006-06-02
Aspiring home inspectors, look elsewhere. This book is exactly what it is listed as, a CHECKLIST. Don't expect to actually learn anything about the systems that make up a home. Maybe a decent buy for a homeowner's personal use, but definitely not for a pro or for a pre-purchase inspection. Hire a licensed professional when it counts. For something a little more in depth, I'd recommend Rex Cauldwell's Inspecting a House.
Excellent Book! We use this to train our home inspectors........2005-07-23

Great home inspector checklist for homeowners also........2004-10-02
Looking for a good, detailed home inspector checklist book was difficult since I don't know about house construction and repairs but I still wanted a lot of details to learn what I need to evaluate. This book was great because there are very detailed sections but they are explained in a way that even a beginner can understand. I went through my house on the inside and outside and found many problems and repairs that were needed. I had no idea of how much you really need to check in your home to make sure everything is OK or if something needs to be updated or repaired. Certain problems I found needed to be further evaluated by a professional contractor but at least I was able to identify the problems with the help of this book. You should get this book to check your own home since you will save a lot of money and time later by detecting problems and repairs before they get too serious or expensive - or dangerous!
