For a beginner gardener as I am it was a joy to have bought this book. Very well illustrated. In fact you see so well the gardens'ideas that reading the book is just a complement to help you plant your garden. Well written and very clear. True to its title: step-by-step. I am glad I bought it and I do recommend it. It makes possible to have a dream garden in your house.

Being new at gardening, I found this book to be a wonderful reference book. It lays flat for easy reference and contains great illustrations and information for the beginner and the more experienced. Contains information on lawns, trees, flowers, and more.

The book could use a bit more detail in the instructions. If you've seen his show(s), or had some art instruction, you'll have a better understanding of the technique and what he's talking about & be fine. Someone starting from scratch may have a few questions, but will be able to figure it out or contact Jerry on his web site. Photos are clear. The paintings he's demonstrating in the book are chosen from TV or DVD's/videos he has available. I'd suggest buying the books & DVD's together as they are a great compliment to each other. Jerry is an accomplished artist and a wonderful teacher. There's always something to learn from him and he's always willing to share the tricks of the trade to help make his students better artists.

This is a great beginners book that gradually exposes you to painting techniques. Its amazing what you can do with this book. I recommend it highly!
Painting Basics.......2007-01-08
After watching Jerry Yarnell's TV show a few times on PBS, they stopped showing it. I wanted more from Mr. Yarnell and found he has written several books. The books are clear and informative and the pictorials are great.

I am a big Jerry Yarnell fan. He is an excellent teacher and it really shows in his instructional books. I had the good fortune to attend one of his workshops, and really learned a lot. I expect to be able to continue to learn from these books.
From what I can tell, the books do not have to be followed in a specific order. I have the first four volumes in the series. What I plan to do is to work on the techniques presented in this first volume and at that point, I'll just pick paintings from his other books that I like.
The paintings are selected to help you develop specific techniques that will be of good general use and he gives step by step instructions and includes color photographs of the paintings at each stage to give you an idea of what each step should look like.
He gives instructions for mixing the colors required at each step too. He doesn't give an exact formula for the colors since brands and grades of paints vary so much. What he does do is to give you the colors and a relative idea of how much to use of each. You then can develop your eye by mixing until the color looks right. It doesn't take long to figure it out and it is much better for developing your color mixing skills than a rote formula.
Jerry also uses a limited number of colors in his palette. This really help with developing you color mixing skills too. He tell you what brushes you need and how to use them as well.
If there is another set of instructional books that is better than these, I haven't found them.
If you go to his web site [...] and click on Books, you can see slide shows of the paintings that are taught in each book. This will give you a better feel for which ones you want to try.

This book has been a great help. I live in BC and have wanted to try to capture the ocean and landscape with watercolours and with Mr. Reid's help I'm one step closer. The book presents clear and simple pictures with limited colours to get started very easily.
A difficult subject made approacable.......2000-05-12
In this day of abstract and cerebral art it is often difficult to garner the skills needed to paint watercolors of natures' most challenging subject matter:water and snow. Jack Rieds' book is a wonderful introduction to this otherwise daunting subject. Every thing a beginner needs to know about painting snow and several different forms of water is covered in this volume of the Watercolor Basics series; from materials to application. The illustrations are lovely and not unduly difficult; yet capture the fundamentals of the subject matter beautifully. If you want to paint the winter snows, spring thaws and summers at the beach, this is the book for you, particularly beginners.

One of the most noticeable trends in the development of railway modelling in recent years has been the increasing interest in scenic work. This has been reflected in the steadily improving standards. After having a train set as a child, later disposed of when we had to move house, my interest in the hobby was again stimulated as a teenager by the scenic layouts appearing in the model railway press. Modellers such as John Ahern, John Allen, and P. D. Hancock have managed to combine skill and originality in railway modelling with an ability to communicate their ideas and enthusiasm to others. I was among the many who must have been inspired by their imaginative work and to me scenic modelling has remained one of the most interesting and enjoyable aspects of the hobby.
Nowadays no model railway layout can be considered complete until a scenic setting has been provided for the line. This is a great book for young readers who are just connecting the idea of words having meaning. They are predictable & have good picture context clues. My son loves it!
Great for age 2-ish!.......2006-02-23
My 2 year old loves Buzz and Woody (who doesn't?) and this is one of those books he can memorize and "read" on his own. If your child is at that stage and likes the characters, its good at that.
I got the book for an airplane activity - it kept him busy all week long, but has lost some of its appeal now that he has his full library to select from.

Our 6 yr old in kindergarten read this book today! It was great he only needed a little help and he was very proud of himself. It is a nice simple story about Buzz,Woody and Jessie that is separate from the movies.

Many property lines drawn in early America still survive today and continue to shape the landscape and character of the United States. Surprisingly, though, no one until now has thoroughly examined the process by which land was divided into private property and distributed to settlers from the beginning of colonization to early nationhood.
In this unprecedented study, Edward T. Price covers most areas of the United States in which the initial division of land was controlled by colonial governments—the original thirteen colonies, and Maine, Vermont, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas. By examining different land policies and the irregular pattern of property that resulted from them, Price chronicles the many ways colonies managed land to promote settlement, develop agriculture, defend frontiers, and attract investment. His analysis reveals as much about land planning techiniques carried to America from Europe as innovations spurred by the unique circumstances of the new world.
Price’s analysis draws on his thorough survey of property records from the first land plans in Virginia in 1607 to empresario grants in Texas in the 1820s. This breadth of data allows him to identify regional differences in allocating land, assess the impact of land planning by historical figures like William Penn of Pennsylvania and Lord Baltimore of Maryland, and trace changes in patterns of land division and ownership through transfers of power among Britain, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Mexico, and the Republic of Texas.
