Update for previous review.......2003-03-23
It has been about 3 years since I wrote the first review for this book on Amazon.com. In that time there have been some new, and I feel better publications about R. M. Schindler
The most comprehensive Text is Judith Sheine's book (entitled R. M. Schindler) published by Phaidon. Please see my review for more details. Sheine is also the editor and narrator for two CD-ROMs produced by Planet Architecture. These are both excellent sources. Lastly is the lavishly photographed catalog for the Schindler Exhibit entitled The architecture of R. M. Schindler by Elizabeth A.T. Smith. This has good essays and photos although I feel is better as supplementry text to Sheine's new book
Nice photos, light in content.......2000-04-20
I am an avid fan of this master architect/builder and I am pleased to see that Shindler is finally getting the attention he deserves. There is an abundance of material about Schindler now available to the public. Whereas, just ten years ago only a few books were available about Schindler (Gebhard and McCoy). This is a large format book with lavish color photos. Early books on Schindler, such as those by Gebhard, McCoy, and Sarnitz were small in format and contained equally small black and white images.
This book is divided into two parts: Essay and Selected Works. The essay, by noted California Author/Historian James Steele assumes that the reader has some familiarity with Schindler and the Wagnerschul. The author skips over biographical data on the architect, such as birth, upbringing, family life etc. and instead presents the reader with a concise, competent essay on Schidler's place in Early Twentieth Century architecture. The essay shows how Schindler was influenced by his mentors and peers such as Loos, Wright, Nuetra, and Irving Gill. It also touches on Schindler's rejection from Johnson and Hitchcock's International Style exhibit.
The second part of the book - selected works - presents the reader with thirty-two of the architect's built works in a chronological order. The selected projects include twenty-five houses, six apartment buildings/complexes and a Baptist church. Each work contains a brief description. About half the projects contain color photos. These appear to be recent photos and include many interior shots. Some projects, such as the Kings Road House and the Wolfe Residence contain reproduced color drawings (plans, sections, elevations) There are also a few renderings, color and b/w. Other projects are, disappointedly, not given proper attention. The Lovell Beach House, considered by many to be Schindler's masterpiece does not have the plans and section that are so essential to the understanding of this seminal structure. One project, The Grokowski Residence, contains only one, small black and white photo - not sufficient to give an adequate description.
The book also contains a map of L.A. with the architect's projects pin-pointed and a brief biography at the end. There is no bibliography that could point the serious scholar to additional sources, nor does the book contain any of Schindler's writings.
THE BOTTOM LINE This book contains nice color photos - some apparently previously unpublished, some good graphic resources. It is not a deep book, however it can be a nice compliment to previously published work on this master architect/builder.

Nice book.......2000-05-30
for everyone who is interested in creating cartoons. Great resource material for beginers and professional artists. I like this book. I'd been looking for book like this forever and I finally found it. I've read a lot of "how to draw cartoons" books, but this one has special place in my library. Read more about reaching your own style! "Technical support" for all inkers and pencilers! Respect!
Book Description
Pairing unique creative vision and exceptional technical artistry, Oscar Lozoya's breathtaking images embody the pinnacle of black-and-white portrait photography. Capturing diverse subjects-from professional artists and musicians to street people in his neighborhood-the images in this collection demonstrate how a skillful photographer can help viewers to look at subjects in new ways. This book analyzes more than 60 of his award-winning, critically acclaimed portraits, revealing the artistic intent behind each and the techniques with which he was able to execute his vision. Included are diagrams for almost every image and in-depth discussions of light selection, light placement, metering, and light ratios.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2007-06-29
I find Lozoya's work to be one of a kind. These are bold photographs that may stop you dead in your tracks. Each piece invites the viewer in, awakening the imagination to take over and tell stories inside the the stunning, suggestive worlds - elusive, rich in mystery, pathos and myth -at times nightmarish, Lozoya creates a dreamy cultural landscape. He has a knack for irony and humor as well as emotionally impactful imagery. I especially enjoy the Muerte series.
I highly recommend this book. I go back to it often for inspiration as an actor, writer and photographer. Lozoya captures the inner life of his subjects with compassion. The lighting and composition is alive and resonant. There is much to gain from an immersion in these photographs. The book will make a unique gift for anyone who'll appreciate absorbing story-telling through images.
Not impressed.......2007-04-11
The best photograph in the book was used for the cover. Many of the photos, as portraits, seem rather contrived. The 'techniques' are kind of old school, and frankly the author uses the same set-up again and again. I was disappointed in it as both a book of portraits and a book discussing technique.
Stunning Imagery.......2003-06-26
The images in this book are breathtaking and beautiful. The variety of subjects from classic portraiture to publicity and folklore is impressive. I very much enjoy learning about different cultures and found this book to whet my appetite for the Mexican/American traditions. The text next to each image helped to explain individual photographs as well as why Oscar Lozoya started creating series of works. The homeless series made me look and see that he views the homeless as individuals with their own personalities that show through in the portraits he presents in this book.
Having seen original prints at an exhibit I must say that a good deal of tonalities were lost in the reproduction in the book. (As is to be expected when a photograph is copied for mass reproduction.) Mr. Lozoya's mastery of studio lighting in stunning in it's technical precision. As a photographer the lighting diagrams helped considerably to visualize the arrangement and placement of the strobe lights. There is also a good deal of information on how he contacts models and how the concept of each image took shape. The photographs in this book are sometimes classic portraits and there are also images that are strikingly different from the normal and challenge you to think. All of the photos are hard to forget.
This book helped to inspire me creatively and challenge the way I see photography as an art form. I would highly recommend it for anyone studying photography or wanting a creative jolt.
Vulgar........2003-01-08
Mr. Lozoya's portraits can only be described as vulgar. The lighting is harsh and contrasty giving his portraits an "apparent" dramatic quality. His ability to "capture" the character of his subjects has less to do with Mr. Lozoya's ability to capture personality or "character" and more to do with taking advantage of his subjects -- the battered faces of the homeless, blind, handicapped, legless, toothless people. Otherwise Mr. Lozoya resorts to cheap theatrics of make-up, masks, horns, ridiculous dramatic poses, props and even fake blood.
For the publisher to publish Mr. Lozoya under it's "Masters Series" is deceiving and insults the true masters.
If you want to master black and white portrait photography study the portraits by Yousef Karsh.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing stuff!.......2003-12-04
Great, dark, action story with incredible painted artwork from Nick Percival - very detailed and moody art that suits the story perfectly.
A classic tale of Judge Dredd trapped in the Cursed Earth - Percival's depiction of Dredd, nailed to the cross is breath taking.
Excellent material!

Very useful "theoretical" perspective..........2002-08-14
Jonathan Cohen, the editor of this book, believes that social-emotional learning (SEL) is the heart of good education. The reason? Human beings grow in their social environments. When children care about each other, and feel cared for, they learn--a lot more than in environments where they feel anxious, frightented, or "out." Unlike "self-esteem" advocates, however, Cohen believes that positive school environments can "challenge" students to grow, so he is not simply dispensing bromides to children.
Cohen believes there are about 300 SEL curricula available in the marketplace. This book gives teachers and administrators a perspective from which to choose. The contributors also point to implementation of SEL curricula. The belief is that it takes 3 years, with consistent support to teachers and administrators, before SEL really "takes hold" in a school, although the results are faster in smaller schools and in younger children. Cohen believes that thoughtful teachers can implement SEL in their classroom, even if the school administration is not implementing in other classrooms.
I particularly liked Stuart Twemlow's chapter on the bully-victim-bystander "drama" in school, and various approaches to intermittent power struggles in schools. Another very interesting approach is Myrna Shure's I Can Problem Solve (ICPS), which is a cognitive-behavioral approach to early high-risk behaviors.
There are other books that are more "exercise" and "unit" oriented that can help teachers more directly. Look on Amazon's book search for any writings by Ruth Charney (Northeast Foundation for Children), Roxann Kriete, Maurice Elias, and others that Amazon will pop up for you.
Great book! Intended mostly for educators, this book is useful for all the "special disciplines" in school (psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, administrators) as well as teachers interested in SEL.
Safe Classrooms/Intelligent Schools.......2001-04-20
Practical, concrete suggestions for teachers (and to a lesser extent, parents) who want to understand how to promote children's social and emotional skills and knowledge. There are so many programs and perspectives 'out there' - this book helps to make sense of it - As a practicing teacher, I loved it and found it actually helpful in my classroom work.

The bottlenecks have to be eliminated! How this can be done successfully is described in this book. To date this path has been followed by more than 60 companies.

Book Description
The Intelligent Techniques for Planning presents a number of modern approaches to the area of automated planning. These approaches combine methods from classical planning such as the construction of graphs and the use of domain-independent heuristics with techniques from other areas of artificial intelligence. The book presents, in detail, a number of state-of-the-art planning systems that utilize constraint satisfaction techniques in order to deal with time and resources, machine learning in order to utilize experience drawn from past runs, methods from knowledge systems for more expressive representation of knowledge and ideas from other areas such as Intelligent Agents. Apart from the thorough analysis and implementation details, each chapter of the book also provides extensive background information about its subject and presents and comments similar approaches done in the past.

great problem identifier, HORRID advice.......2006-01-07
This book is great for identifying problems that may be affecting you, it defines each problem very clearly, and there is a test in the beginning to help you figure out which problem areas are at the top of the list. It even gives examples of how these problem areas affect certain situations to clarify.
The problem with this book is the advice. A lot of it is very simple, and winds up contradicting itself. Some of it is not even helpful or good advice. Take for example the idea that one should ignore insults, in the chapter about Personalizing. It states that if you don't consistently ignore someone who is insulting you, it's called 'letting it get to you'. However, it's actually called 'letting someone walk all over you' and a better book would advise you to learn to be assertive and tell the person to stop, THE FIRST TIME, and if the person doesn't stop, to leave. Also, at the end of the chapter, is a real problem as well. He writes a scenario with a mother who made homemade salad dressing and her son doesn't like it. He then makes it sound as though it is okay for you to sit there and silently demean your own son in your head because of his personal tastes, saying stuff to yourself like he has an inability to appreciate good food, and that he is not the ultimate world judge of salad dressing worthiness (whilst true, this would imply the mother would think that SHE is the ultimate world judge and is being quietly condescending), and that if she serves him bottled salad dressing next time and he complains, she can explain the error (in this case his personal tastes are considered WRONG) of his ways. This right here is an extremely poor model of appropriate thought behavior! Obviously the mother in the example is a bit of a narcissist and harmfully not allowing her son to have his own personal tastes without criticism. Things like this are why I refuse to give this book any review that makes it sound great.
So definitely take this book with a heaping pile of salt. Please don't let it be your self-help bible. There are other ways of acting that would be much much better than the advice given in this book.
Authoritatively Written With A Gentle Tone, but a Firm Hand .......2005-04-06
One of the few superlative books in the self-help realm, this one really breaks down the faulty thinking processes we engage in and gives them easy to understand labels as we learn to eliminate them from our lives. Contrary to the absolutely fatuously-titled review: "Good for defining problem, minimal for helping with it" there are whole chapters here dealing with nothing other than "helping with it" including no less than 18 specific techniques for dealing with the various types of problems covered here, and which are handled here with plenty of detail and practical advice for me. I would suggest ignoring this other reviewer who sounds like he has little or no expertise in the self-help area and buy this book! I promise you will thank me!
Best thing about this book..........2004-05-10
is that it made me actually stop and think about all the stupid things we people sometimes do to ourselves that make us go crazy for no good reason other then our own over-exaggerating thoughts. If we only learn to alter the way we think, the world would be a much much better place to live. You can definitely learn a lot from this book...especially for young adolescents, this book can the teach the young very early on in life how to prepare yourself for the inevitable as they get older. For example, I thought about this book one day while I was driving with my family on the highway during Thanksgiving Day. There happened to be some crazy driver driving almost 90 MPH and swirving dangerously among the other cars. All of a sudden, I made a witty remark stating, "Geez, that driver must really be in a hurry to eat some turkey." Once I said that, everybody in the car started laughing. Instead of getting mad at the crazy driver for driving so carelessly, "I" chose to reinstate my thoughts about him and reaasure everybody that even an annoying situation such as that, should not bring you down unless you choose to let it bring you down.
A Great Book.......2003-06-25
This book has helped me in many ways. I highly reccomend it to anyone who suffers from anxiety. The techniques are practical and easily applied. The book is easy to read and understand. You may also use it as a reference to make sure you are using the techniques properly.
Good for defining problem, minimal for helping with it.......2001-09-28
The ten items listed as the dumbest mistakes were interesting as was the discussion as to how the authors chose those particular mistakes and why. The primary value to the book is if you find one or two of the mistakes that you make on a regular basis. Unfortunately they are then followed by several paragraphs of how to deal with that problem. There are several full length books available on how to deal with just one of these problems. It appears that these authors think that in a few paragraphs they can resolve problems that others take a whole book to deal with. That being said, this book does have a value. I don't think that I would recommend it to someone who makes one or more of these mistakes on a regular basis and wishes to do something about it. For them I would suggest a book that deals more directly with their problem. However, it is an enlightening book for people who might read through it and find something that describes them. That information and the techniques described to help with the situation might be just what they need to go further and seek more thorough help. It is a good book to help you more clearly define a problem so that you can seek out other appropriate book to treat the problem.
