4 out of 5 stars What a terrific guide for any new commers.......2005-10-12

Not the average tourist guide.

Instead of pages wasted on Fisherman's Wharf (which is as much San Francisco as the Wax Museum), you are guided through small streets and crannies of the City.

Because of the fire of 1906, the architecture is vastly different neighborhood by neighboorhood and this guide decribes them plainly and with grace.

Reading the book a week before a trip out will educate you and create more excitement than any Fodor's or Mobile can do

5 out of 5 stars Seeing the Real San Francisco.......2005-06-19

Although I've lived here 30 years, I didn't know how much I was unaware of about San Francisco. This little guide let's you see the history and its architecture in a delightful way.

5 out of 5 stars The Best San Francisco Guide.......2005-06-07

The very best and most comprehensive guide to San Francisco Bay Area architecture. Informative for anyone who is interested in architecture. A wonderful way to see the city - have lived in this city 40 years but there was still much to discover with this guide in hand.

5 out of 5 stars a most useful guide.......2005-05-18

San Francisco Architecture is the best field guide around if you want to find out about both old and new architecture in the Bay Area.It not only covers San Francisco, but does a a good job of tours in San Jose,Oakland, and Berkeley, and up to Sonoma, and Napa with the wineries.I took several of the tours with my friends and we all found it a very insightful and pleasurable experience that i highly recommend. It is loaded with photos to help with the selection of what you want to see and not too big and bulky to take along comfortably.I give it an enthusiastic five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Crisp, clear, concise.......2005-05-17

The new edition of San Francisco Architecture is everything a portable guide to the built environment should be: organized, accessible, and with enough detail to expand one's sense of time, place, and people. Fortunately, from this reader's point of view, it was written for a lay, rather than specialist, audience; the result is neither exhaustive nor exhausting, merely highly informative. As with any reference book, it must address specific information needs of a specific audience, and, in my estimation, this guide does so very well for a reader with general interest in buildings around the Bay Area.

San Francisco Architecture is unusually well designed and produced: the photography, layout, information structure, typography and printing (espcially the halftone reproduction) are all exemplary and reinforcing of each other. Visually, it is as satisfying as it is workmanlike -- free of excess or caprice and dedicated to serving information effectively.

    Book Description

In 1999 photographer Thomas Roma found himself within the walls of Philadelphia's Holmesburg Prison, one of the most notorious prisons in the United States, doing a special photographic project for Steve Buscemi's Animal Factory. During downtime Roma wandered through this nineteenth-century fortress, walking in and out of many of its seven hundred or so cells. After Holmesburg's inception in 1896—on the occasion of which one Philadelphia reporter warned, "Abandon all hope all ye who enter here"—it quickly became the prison for Philadelphia's worst criminals, eventually packing up to five prisoners into six by eight foot cells designed for single-occupancy. After leaving the site, Roma found his mind often inhabiting the space of the prison with its halls of flaking paint and graffiti-covered cells. Overwhelmed by the evidence of the lives spent inside those small rooms, Roma returned to photograph on his own, creating the images now collected for In Prison Air: The Cells of Holmesburg Prison. Holmesburg, closed in 1997, is perhaps most well known for a series of scientific experiments carried out on its prisoners over a period of twenty-five years. Sponsored by the U.S. Army, the CIA, the University of Pennsylvania, The Dow Chemical Company, and Johnson & Johnson, the experiments tested the effects of substances ranging from deodorants and hair dyes to LSD and BZ, a compound ten times as strong as LSD, to radioactive isotopes and chemical warfare agents. These tests also included a special climate chamber designed for the study of skin diseases encountered during World War II. Dr. Albert Kligman, the architect of the human testing program at Holmesburg, saw the prison as "acres of skin.…like a farmer seeing a fertile field for the first time." Now, Kligman's tests are considered by many to be one of the most explicit violations of the Nuremberg Code, as undereducated and illiterate prisoners almost certainly did not realize the consequences of their consent. The cells are now empty of the men that endured their squalor, but their presence remains through the detritus and graffiti accumulated over the prison's century-long history, etched indelibly into Roma's master lens.

It's not a whole book. It's a good picture or two at the most. I really wanted it to be braver. His light is nice, at least.

    3 out of 5 stars Yesterday's Supermax.......2007-04-30

After looking through this book a few times I was reminded of what John Szarkowski says in his Forward: 'Roma's book is in fact an odd and possibly perverse work, designed for who knows what audience'. I agree. Not being familiar with Roma's work and seeing the book for sale at a remarkably low price plus the intriguing subject matter convinced me I should have a copy.

The book is a handsome production in the best tradition of photobooks. Elegant design, quality paper and the forty-four photos well printed in a two hundred screen. The images though are exceedingly dull. Basically the same shot of empty cells with illegible scrawl on the walls and plenty of peeling paint or plaster. Some of this decay does actually produce some interesting texture shots.

Because this is an art book there is the usual conceit of revealing virtually nothing of the background to the photos. Holmesburg prison opened in 1896 and closed in 1997 acquiring a rather ramshackle fame as a place where the US Army, CIA, Dow Chemical and Johnson & Johnson, among others, used prisoners for scientific and medical experiments. This and more I found on the publisher's website and it would have been helpful if it was included in the book to give more perspective to the contents. As it is I feel the publication is no more than a series of bland photographs of redundant prison cells.

          3 out of 5 stars Over-priced.......2001-08-03

In my opinion, this book is overpriced. I have not finished reading it, but I have a general feeling so far that a book going for US$ 45 has to deliver. It does not matter whether it is a hard-copy. The book has some incomplete sentences, something I honestly did not expect considering the level it is targeted for - well-read business executives, etc.

That said, it gives what I think is useful information for someone in hurry.

          5 out of 5 stars A great find!!!.......2004-05-28

This book is amazing! When I first started renting in NYC I was really intimidated and let landlords walk all over me but this book has helped me to do a 360. Now that I know what my rights are, I don't hesitate to confront my landlord about things like repairs. A couple of months ago I even used this book as a guide to subletting my place. I thought that that was going to be a huge ordeal but this book made it so easy! So if you're a NY renter, do yourself a favor and buy this book! Don't let the greedy landlords take advantage of you anymore!

          5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2003-07-24

I moved to New York City a year ago, but didn't have this book. How I wish I did...

This city is a lot of fun, but is also demanding in many ways. Understanding your rights as a tenant is one of those "know it or suffer the consequences" issues every NYC renter faces.

I found this book to be a great resource, even with the recent modifications in state and city laws. It is well laid out and explains the sometimes dry issues of tenants' rights in a very readable manner. Unlike several of the other tenants' rights books out there, this book had a well constructed index that brought me straight to the answers I was seeking.

          Be proactive, buy this book!

            Book Description

A compelling blend of legal and political history, this book chronicles the largest tenant rebellion in U.S. history. From its beginning in the rural villages of eastern New York in 1839 until its collapse in 1865, the Anti-Rent movement impelled the state's governors, legislators, judges, and journalists, as well as delegates to New York's bellwether constitutional convention of 1846, to wrestle with two difficult problems of social policy. One was how to put down violent tenant resistance to the enforcement of landlord property and contract rights. The second was how to abolish the archaic form of land tenure at the root of the rent strike.

Charles McCurdy considers the public debate on these questions from a fresh perspective. Instead of treating law and politics as dependent variables--as mirrors of social interests or accelerators of social change--he highlights the manifold ways in which law and politics shaped both the pattern of Anti-Rent violence and the drive for land reform. In the process, he provides a major reinterpretation of the ideas and institutions that diminished the promise of American democracy in the supposed "golden age" of American law and politics.

This book is out of print and the new edition is called The Landlord's Legal Guide in New York. I'm the author and thought I would post this so customers could easily find it, since the publisher slightly changed the title.

Reading this showed me what my rights are with my renters. Now I can do my own evictions. It was good that it told me what I am supposed to be doing under the law for my renters.
