This is a complete guide to the solar house, with super-efficiency built in! It is a very well thought through design for a super efficient modern solar home. Has a comprehensive menu of things to deal with when designing/building a solar home, including "smart" house features like computerized controls. Very scientific, very informative with lots of examples, photos, charts and graphs.

This book has a series of drawing and painting projects in different media done by different artists, step by step. These are immensely helpful to me, as I get a lot out of watching other artists work.

The author, however, makes a pretense of "teaching" things about media and art in this book, but really, adds nothing to the learning process at all. He makes sweeping generalizations about art, without explanation. (e.g., "I tell my students to work in terms of the media." What does that mean??) He criticizes the artists' work without offering any analysis or alternatives, which might be helpful. (e.g., "This works well in terms of the color.") And above all, the arrogance in his critiquing tone is offensive.

On the whole, the author could be removed entirely from this book, and it would be more helpful. The photography is lovely. I like the book--I just don't read the text anymore.

Follow along with the author from pencil to oils.......1999-07-25

After finding this in the library, I want to have this book for myself. As a person getting back into my artwork, I enjoy the author's use of other artists to demonstrate each lesson. Want a concise explanation of working in a variety of media from pencils, pastels, watercolors and oils? Then get this book. Seeing the four or so artists approach to each lesson is a reminder that each one of us has our own style. There isn't one "right" way to depict a landscape, a portrait or a city scene. As the reader turns each page, he/she will find themselves chomping at the bit to get pencil, charcoal or paintbrush in hand.

This is an excellent book. I first checked it out from the library & then HAD to buy my own copy. It has great techniques; many of which I've seen illustrated in adult painting/crafting books too. This book is leaps & bounds beyond most of the "same old, same old" kids art books out there.

The book is not about crafts, real art techniques are explained. Techniques that can be learned and used later for their own projects. The book explains colors and mixing, and also describes various art supplies. A real artist could bud out from this book, or at least a love of art.

This is a wonderful art projects book that is filled with easy to do creative activities - it's written in a non-patronizing way (you gotta love those Brits) - most of the materials needed are generally already in one's home and - the results are spectacular. My 10-year old grand-daughter was completely caught up and spent hours producing rather wonderful "masterpieces". I highly recommend to parents and grandparents.

First, since there is little information about this title on Amazon, I'll give some information.

This book is actually three complete books in one: The Usborne Book of Art Ideas, The Usborne Book of Art Skills, and the Usborne Book of Art Projects.

The front book cover says: "Over 400 inspiring ideas for things to do with paints, pastels, collage, crayons, inks, paper, pens, found objects, stitches, rubbings."

The back cover says: "This inspiring book is packed full of creative ideas. It shows exciting ways of using different art materials. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions exactly or use the ideas to create pictures of your own."

There are hundreds of art projects in here, using a wide variety of different media. I love that while many of the art projects are fairly specific, they are really jumping off points, ways of experimenting with the different media and ideas so you can move off with them in your own direction. I am a homeschooling mother of two elementary-aged children, and this book has been very inspiring to the three of us.

Wow! it should be called Encyclopedia for the painting artists, this bok really has Everything, it even has a seccion on frames, this book has that special cuality that it's not only a good but, but also a book that you reallly enjoy while you reading. The paper cuality is excellent, the text is clear and easy to follow (and my first language is not english but spanish), buy this book and begin expressing yourself. My 8 year old granddaughter did very well with the drawing part. She still does not seem to be interested in the painting yet. I think 8 years old is a little young for most for this type of kit. They are still in the watercolor stage, which for them is easier.

Great for Kids.......2003-05-25

Although I am 25 years old, I bought this book because I love Wyland's work and was curious about how he drew his sea creatures. It came with brushes, some acrylic paints, drawing paper, pencils, and a book giving instruction on how to draw and paint (all in a hard cover folder). It is definetly worth the price and would be a great start up book for kids interested in sea art.

A good little book..........2004-08-06

This was a great "over-the-shoulder" sketchbook that held my interest throughout. I loved the writer's conversational style, and he was able to demonstrate many techniques and encourage me to begin humbly with my sketching. I thought it was well worth the money, if for no other reason than the shading information.

ABSOLUTELY UNINSPIRING AND DULL.......2003-12-28

The sketches given as examples are of very poor quality, the selection of themes is random and unorganized, nothing is explained to the fullest, instruction is vague, + there is no tips on composition.
In short: another of these books that go step 1), step 2) and poof the drawing is finished without the instructor spelling out steps 3,4,5,6.
The selection of drawing subjects is extremely restrictive or the author just lacked inspiration; it's just draw a little of this, than a little of that, with no finishing techniques and no idea on how to group the objects.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
There are plenty of better books, such as from Ernest Watson, Ferdinand Petrie, Wendon Blake and more (even if those guys are oldies; they remain goodies)

Beautiful sketches I still wish I could master.......2002-10-06

This book is a pleasantly composed item with very beautiful sketches. The author gives very good information and examples on materials and techniques used, and it is clear that this book helped me, but only a little....
I loved the fact that it was not overpowered with text and I would probably be able to copy the sketches in the book fairly well. Unfortunately I don't think this book helped me produce my own sketches from my personal observations. I thnk it is too advanced for the first-time drawer, or the drawer with a minimum of skill and even less confidence...

Not for Beginners.......2001-09-09

Beginners won't really benefit from this book. The author's vague description of perspective confuses rather than explains. The book resembles a sketchbook with some notes dropped into it. I would recommend The Art of Drawing and Pencil Drawing Techniques over this thing anyday.
