Book Description
This second edition of 'Textile Conservator's Manual', now revised and available in paperback, provides an in-depth review of the current practice, ethics and materials used in textile conservation. Concentrating on decorative art objects from the major cultures, the book gives practical instruction and a wide variety of case histories.
While the format has been simplified, the text has been expanded and updated to include changes bought about by recent developments in the conservation of material. This new information will increase the reader's ability to interpret signs of ageing and past activity on the object. New case histories in Part Two represent major investigations into the technical history.
A basis is provided from which to develop practical skills, taking into account the needs of the object, its essential characteristics of appearance and, above all, its structure. The book covers a wide range of decorative objects, from a fragment of linen 4000 years old to a theatrical backcloth of the twentieth century.
This book is practical and thought-provoking, not only about what is being done and how, but also why.
Paperback edition of established book
In-depth review of current practice

Book Description
Crystalline glazes have a magical quality that appeals to many ceramicists. Unfortunately, producing these glazes can be technically difficult.
Diane Creber tackles the problems involved in using this challenging medium. She describes the clays and kilns most suitable, explains how to glaze, provides glaze recipes, and discusses how to fire in both oxidation and reduction conditions. She also briefly sketches the history of crystalline glazes.
A useful guide to this exciting subject, Crystalline Glazes is perfect for both the student and the practiced potter experimenting with this technique. The second edition includes a new chapter, profiling the work of 14 potters from around the globe. These artists discuss their approaches, techniques, and recipes for achieving successful crystalline glazes.

good information if you're firing cone 10.......2007-05-31
Almost all of the glaze recipes and firing schedules designed for very high-fire kilns (cone 10 and above). More information on achieving the intended effects at stoneware temperatures (cone 5-7) would have been more useful to me.
Wow! Material is hard to hard on Crystalline Glazes..........2006-01-31
this is the most comprehensive book I've found. It has firing techniques, lots of glaze information and the technical information you need without it being overwhelming.
Diane Creber "Crystalline Glazes".......1999-12-24
This is a well written book dealing with crystalline glazes. If you have tried to find material on crystalline glazes you will realize how scarce it is. I have tried four of her glaze formulas and followed her instruction on firing.
Results: Two terrific glazes, one very nice glaze, and one which remained underdeveloped.
easy to understand.......1999-08-26
the shapes are thrown, the chemicals are here, the infinite switch is ready, the cone is in the box, then, one more time, i read the book. all systems are go and we push the button. will write more later, am know watching the pyrometer.

Book Description
David Wade has spent a lifetime gathering and organizing the extraordinary families of surface patterns that nature throws up at every scale. The study of these shapes—a subject virtually unknown in the West—was known in ancient China as Li and is the sister science to Feng Shui. In this unique and insightful book are sand and wave patterns, big-cat markings, bark and leaf designs, soap and marbling swirls, crystalline and rock forms, tree branching types, and many more of nature’s dynamic, sometimes enigmatic designs. Li will appeal to scientists and artists, and has far-reaching applications in graphic design, architecture, and other visual forms and sciences.
Customer Reviews:
A short account of forms in nature........2007-01-06
It is a very nice short account of different forms in nature, I enjoyed the interpretation given to the different natural expressions.
I love this book!.......2006-02-25
This book is a thoughtful look at patterns of all sorts. The text accompanying the picture is concise and helpful, but not overwhelming.
This is a book one can open to any page and just let the mind wander. The world of Li is more complex and beautiful than I had imagined.
Nature's Artistic Technology.......2003-06-26
A wonderful little book that shows the remarkable complexity and inner structure of natural patterns. Loaded with black and white illustrations, Wade presents the reader with a variety of amazing, self-similar shapes that occur in nature. Anyone interested in fractals, nature, sacred geometry, and mathematics is sure to be attracted to this book. The reader will gain an appreciation of the simple, yet amazing intelligence built into natural life-forms, landscapes, and objects.

Book Description
"C. G. Jung emphasized the deep link to the physical world that exists for the collective unconscious and its archetypes. Our dreams and symbols, as well as the patterns of our behavior, are shaped by the fact that we are creatures of a material universe. Michael Conforti's research has been directed to understanding the nature of these links and patterns in the light of the new sciences ñ quantum theory, chaos theory, self-organization, and the new biology. Conforti's book successfully integrates this material to offer a new, exciting challenge to psychotherapy. It demonstrates that the study of consciousness cannot neglect the insights of the sciences and in doing so promises a unified view of mind and matter."
Customer Reviews:
AN OWNER'S MANUAL FOR THE MIND.......1999-11-09
Michael Conforti builds on Carl Jung's insight that those unconscious blueprints in the mind called archetypes greatly influence the choices we make in everyday life. These personal choices may take the form of self-organizing patterned behavior. It's as if the conscious mind has an unconscious mind of its own. The author demonstrates by way of example in different contexts how identifying the underlying archetype may lead to interventions which have the leverage and potential to change behavior. The reader is shown how distinctions such as mind-body, psyche-matter and subject-object are false divisions in a unified world. Michael Conforti's analysis brings to human consciousness an awareness that we live in unbroken wholeness and that we and nature are one. As a trial judge for 18 years, reading Michael Conforti's "Field, Form and Fate" has given me greater insight into the forces that have shaped the law. It's exciting and a "must read" for anyone who wants to know how the mind works.

Book Description
Natural Pattern Forms A Practical Sourcebook for Landscape Design Richard L. Dubé Here for the first time is a practical guide to naturalistic landscape design. With the aid of easy-to-use templates, author Richard L. Dubé introduces you to 48 natural pattern forms, and shows you how to apply these natural solutions to everyday outdoor design problems. Imagine drawing from a palette as varied as an arcing river, receding hillseven clouds and frost. This book provides the inspiration you need to break away from staid design solutions and discover design solutions that are creative and natural. All 48 original templates include a sketch, a photo, and a discussion of the structure, aesthetic attributes, and underlying emotional tone of the pattern form. In addition, Mr. Dubé shows how each form can be reconfigured to meet the needs of specific spaces. Further, each template is cross-referenced to specific design applications, demonstrating practical ways to incorporate natural pattern forms in real designs. This book is a unique and invaluable visual resource for professionals and a creative guide for students who are learning to see the natural landscape in a new way. In addition to expanding any existing repertoire of design solutions, this important new resource:
- Looks at specific design problems.
- Offers a range of possible solutions for each problem.
- Explains how and where to look for natural patterns.
- Presents information in a clear and concise manner.
- Provides beautiful visual examples.
Author Richard L. Dubé is uniquely qualified to create the first practical guide to naturalistic landscape design. A practicing landscape designer for 17 years, Mr. Dubé is a professional interpretive naturalist with extensive knowledge of Japanese landscape design and construction. In this book he draws upon his knowledge of the conscious use of natural pattern forms in the world-renowned gardens of Japan.

Book Description
Losing Your Executive Director Without Losing Your Way is a practical guide for board members and executives who must guide their nonprofits through the difficult transition of replacing the key member of their organization and shows how to make this transition a positive event. The authors Carol Weisman and Richard I. Goldbaum—acclaimed experts on the topic of governance—explain how boards can bridge the gap between executive directors and learn to use the transition period as a strategic opportunity. Using this invaluable resource, board chairs and members will learn what they need to know to recruit and train the new executive director and help the ED take charge of the organization.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource -- basic but necessary.......2005-07-26
Ideally, a nonprofit's executive director (ED) and board have time and energy to plan ahead for executive transition. Many board members have never had to face the daunting, time-consuming process involved in executive transition. ED turnover is more rapid than in years past, owing to reasons such as the increase in nonprofit organizations, changing (and often more demanding) board and stakeholder expectations of EDs, and increased willingness on the part of both boards and EDs to part company over issues of mission, policy, and management.
This book is an excellent description of the basics of executive director transition, including descriptions of factors that lead to executive director transition and checklists for board members, interim EDs, and others to use in making the transition in nonprofit management as painless as possible.
The authors cite seven "factors," or reasons, EDs leave a nonprofit: career ladder (advancing in a career), godfather ("they made me an offer I couldn't refuse"), gone fishing (the ED who is no longer attending to business), sudden loss (injury, illness, or death of the ED), burnout, cutting the mustard (not getting the job done), and the ten-year factor (many EDs sense it's time to leave, or board culture changes over time to signal to the ED that a change is needed). My consulting practice has included many clients with examples of overlapping factors (the burnout ten-year ED who no longer cuts the mustard and goes fishing), but the basic categories are valid and recognizable.
I especially like the chapter on building strong board-ED relationships. Hiring a new ED represents a fresh opportunity for the board and ED to clarify roles, set expectations, and build the trust and respect that are central to effective nonprofit governance. Of course, part of that process is building transition planning into the new ED's job responsibilities and the board's expectations for its own performance. After all, one goal of ED transition should be that it's easier the next time.

Release Date: 2004-02-06 |
Book Description
This is the story of one man and a garden. It is also the portrait of a marriage expressed through the vision and mystery of creating a garden. Neither the author, Roy Strong, nor his wife, the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, had foreseen this when they eloped and married in 1971. Over thirty years on they find themselves surrounded by the largest formal garden made in this country since 1945, increasingly recognized as one of the most important laid out in the second half of the twentieth century. And yet it was done not only with little money and less labour, but quite unconsciously.
But it is not so much the horticultural triumph that will grip the reader as what this garden on the Welsh Borders in Herefordshire has come to mean in the lives of its creators. Into the Laskett has been etched not only their own biographies but also the many people who crossed their lives and are commemorated within it. That galaxy includes not only garden icons, like Rosemary Verey, Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe and Ian Hamilton Finlay, but figures as varied as the photographer Sir Cecil Beaton, the painter John Piper and the fashion designer Jean Muir. It also enshrines memories of two great Oxford intellectual dynasties, the Omans and Trevelyans, of the great choreographer, Sir Frederick Ashton, of the Prince of Wales and his garden at Highgrove as well as a colourful pageant of minor characters from mole catchers to cats.
The Laskett is the unusual and unique story of someone who, with his wife, has been at the centre of the arts for half a century. A great love affair, a portrait of a marriage, a haunting and human tale of a garden as the domain of ghosts and as the habitat of memory, within its confines can be found both joy and happiness as well as the tears of tragedy. No one who reads this book will put it down unmoved.

Book Description
Sir Roy Strong and his wife, the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, have lived in the country for nearly thirty years. In 1987 he was asked to write an occasional column reflecting this quintessentially English way of life for the prestigious magazine A Country Life. This charming book brings these popular pieces together, portraying the passing of the seasons in what the author describes as his ‘beloved adopted county’ of Herefordshire.
A Country Life is a wide-ranging kaleidoscope of memories and observations, embracing the countryside, gardens, cooking, and remembrances of things both long gone and only yesterday. The author writes lyrically of the arrival of the bright green tarragon shoots in spring; of the delights of eating al fresco; of making sorbets from blackberry and quince; of the russet beech hedges in winter and the sweet nostalgia that comes from unpacking Christmas decorations.
The keynote of A Country Life is delight – a portrait of life in the English countryside, which seems as old as time itself.
Customer Reviews:
A gentle country life.......1999-12-13
First published in Britain in 1994 A Country Life is a collection of the authors personal memories and experiences a number of which appeared as regular column pieces in Country Life magazine between 1989 and 1994.
Following the seasons it is a glorious portrait of the rural way of life of Roy Strong former Director of the V&A and his wife Julia Trevelyan Oman who provides the delightful pen and ink illustrations.
The scene is set by an essay Strong wrote for Hortus in 1992 in which he describes their house The Laskett in Herefordshire.
