Seattle is widely seen as a hip, cutting-edge city, yet--the Space Needle aside--its architecture has tended toward the conservative. That could be changing, with several promising projects currently under way, including a music museum designed by Frank Gehry and one completed building of considerable poetry.

The latter, Steven Holl's St. Ignatius Chapel at Seattle University, is the subject of a monograph that emphasizes its mystical aspects, which Holl links to the life of Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuit Order. This complex little building is a glowing meditation on mysteries of light and color, and the book deepens those mysteries more than it clarifies them. The color photos are gorgeous but usually abstract and unidentified, and Holl's text is short and metaphorical. The chapel bears strong influences of such early modern architects as R.M. Schindler, Alvar Aalto, and especially of Le Corbusier, in the form of his pilgrimage Chapel at Ronchamp. Yet it is also Holl's personal creation, marrying awkwardness and grace in a memorable manner.

At some point, a third-party book will examine these influences and the complex history of how this building, which involved great collaboration and compromise that goes unmentioned here, came into being. Until then, this visually evocative package will give a taste of the subtle pleasures that can only be fully experienced by visiting the building. The softly reproduced photos are artful, but the text is arguably set too small to read comfortably, and the scarce captions are smaller still. --John Pastier

    Book Description

If the recently completed and highly praised Kiasma museum in Finland is architect Steven Holl's largest and most public work to date, his much smaller Chapel of St. Ignatius in Seattle is his most private and, in many ways, his most inspiring. In it, we see distilled the themes and concerns taht have made Holl one of the most respected architects practicing today. This jewel-like chapel, while small, contains the essence of Holl's vision-his interest in the phenomenology of space, his passionate investigations of form and material, and his use of reflected light and color. This book functions as a journal in the life of this extraordinary building. From Holl's preparatory watercolor sketches, to design development and working drawing details, to construction shots showing the unique precast system, to a large photographic portfolio of the completed building, this book reveals Holl's working method as well as the finished building. Essays by Steven Holl and client Fr. Jerry Cobb introduce the book. The color photographs present the unique aspects of the design and its details.

4 out of 5 stars Just to set the record straight.......2007-10-01

I studied with Stash back in the seventies. HE is a wonderful painter and a terrific teacher. I have seen his Big Book of Oil Painting and think it is wonderful. Lots of material and many many paintings. I am surprised you could not find anything to like about any of them......

        4 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise.......2006-06-20

I've owned all of Allyn Schaeffers big oil painting books. I really didn't care for any of them. Not only was the painting style not realist enough for me but the bland ugly subjects that she chose to illustrate turned me completely off the books.

This book is a different. There are far fewer examples but they are much better. There are compositional sketches, multiple illustrated steps, and often the colors used are detailed and located in the paintings. Most important, the works and illustrations are of much more attractive subjects. Instead of fighting myself to try and look past the bland illustrations to try and understand her points I actually enjoy looking through this book to study it.

Even with the impressionistic feel this is a huge improvement over her skys, trees, and water books and I like it a lot.

My boys are 4 and 6 and they loves these. My 6 yr old can read them with no problem but they like for me to read to them both and we got The Fran with Four Brains just yesterday and they had me read the entire book to them last night. They are excited about the fact that i have ordered them this boxed set, and when it comes I am sure we will be reading them till we have read them all. I hope the author starts more in this series of books so they can continue to have a Great series that they enjoy that pulls u right in.

4 out of 5 stars Franny K Steins Crate of Danger.......2007-01-09

My four year old son loves all the Franny books! Franny shows kids that it is okay to be different, that science can be lots of fun and that most "scary" things really aren't. My only complaint is that my son is constantly doing mad scientist experiments. We have test tubes filled with interesting items all over the house, just waiting to see what happens. Not high literature, but a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Clever and funny.......2006-09-08

My 6-year old son loves the franny stories. I thought he might have trouble relating to the girl, but he is very much into science and so he had no problems being pulled in to Franny's adventures. She dabbles in science, while still learning what it means to be a kid.

            5 out of 5 stars Franny K. Stein's Crate of Danger.......2006-02-02

My 9 year old son LOVES these books. He is a struggling reader, and would rather learn science than language arts. Because these books have to do with science experiments, he eats them up. He's on the 4th book now and I did not tell him to read last night, and caught him reading it on his own and almost done with it. It's exciting for me as a parent and reader to see him find a series that can hold his interest while he becomes a better reader.

I love these books because they are great chapter books. They are funny because Franny is the coolest mad scientist, to be a girl.

I will read Franny K. Stein for the rest of my life.

All Franny needs for her latest experiment is a few volunteers, a half-completed two-headed robot, and an invisibility potion. Only this experiment just might prove to be Franny's most difficult. What do you do when your classmates don't know anything about mad science and there's a doubly dumb robot running amok to prove it?

            5 out of 5 stars Great series.......2007-09-21

My son just laughs and giggles when he reads these. He started in second grade, and it was a great series that kept him reading. He is now in third grade and reading more complex chapter books, but he'll still pick these up for a quick laugh. I plan on handing them down to my daughter next year when she is in first grade. The heroine is quirky and differant. She learns to celebrate her differances. The series should appeal to boys and girls and the main character is a lot of fun.

I love reading this book to kids. Books should be easy to understand for kids, and luckily this one delivers. It's a quality read, too. Children will fall in love with the female character in the book who's just a geeky kid wishing to fit in with other kids. It's a good story that helps children understand that fitting in isn't always the most important thing. I want you to buy this book for a child.

4 out of 5 stars The Out-of-Sight Humor of "The Invisible MAD".......2005-05-13

"The Invisible MAD" gets off to a strong start with the "No Longer Working for Peanuts Dept." and the magazine's answer to the big question, "Will Success Spoil Charlie Brown?" Drawn by Jack Rickard and written by Larry Siegel this is a nice look at what happened when Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts" became big business in the 1960s (the collection was originally published in 1967). The idea is that Shermy comes back to visit the old gang and discovers Schroeder has a rock band, Pigpen is using imported dust, and Charlie Brown is playing polo. This a classic example of "MAD" satire and while there might not be anything else as good here, it is still an enjoyable walk down memory lane for a comic look at the 1960s.

That is why we get a look at "The MAD Library of Extremely Thin Books" (e.g., "Germans Who Admit they Backed the Nazis"), "Advantages of the Suburbs for Kids," and "MAD's Medical Mother Goose" written by Siegel and illustrated by Al Jaffee. You also get a chance to join in on the fun in "MAD's Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" where they provide several examples to stupid questions (e.g., a dentist asking "Did that hurt?") and then provide you space to come up with your own riposte. Who knows, you could do better than Jaffee.

What you really want to know is what parodies do you get to see in "The Invisible MAD." Artist Mort Drucker and writer Dick De Bartolo do "Mission: Ridiculous" for the television one and ending the book is Drucker joining with Stan Hart to do "In the Out Exit" for the movie one (and I bet most of your have no idea the movie being parodied is "Up the Down Staircase," which starred Sandy Dennis and is one of those movies that teachers still watch periodically to remember why they bother to teach). There are other familiar faces here, such as Spy vs. Spy, a quartet of Don Martin offerings, and Dave Berg's look at the "Lighter Side" of friendship and fear. The result is a solid offering of the warped humor from the usual gang of idiots that some of us grew up on way back when.

3 out of 5 stars Some good info, but wordy and self-serving.......2003-09-02

You have to keep in mind that this is written by a real estate agent, so he really has an agent's best interests in mind, not yours as a buyer or seller. That said, the book does contain a complete survey of buying/selling homes (mostly buying, actually), assisted by online websites. I found the text too verbose, and I wonder if the publisher or author gets paid for the sites they recommend, for a lot of other useful sites aren't mentioned at all.

                            5 out of 5 stars Next best thing to a self-explanatory Realtor!.......2001-08-10

Over a year ago I borrowed this book from a friend, and read through it during the entire process of my first purchase of a house. It helped very easily to follow all that was happening, all the terminology, etc. and in some cases, to be ahead, and expect the next steps.

It was so helpful, that I decided to buy it for myself this year, as we're considering the sale of our place, and getting us a larger house.

If you're going to buy or sell a house, you have got to read it: it'll be of extreme help.

5 out of 5 stars made my life so much easier.......2000-06-16

This book made my life so much easier by explaining in easy to follow steps how to do everything i needed to sell homes and purchase a new one. It is very thorough, covers all topics from A to z and the recommendations on web sites were right on. The author knows his stuff. This is the first Idiot's Guide book I've bought and I'm so glad i did.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Book.......2000-06-15

I got this book for my dad for Father's Day because he and my mother are planning on selling their home and buying a smaller home. the For Sale By Owner comments in some of the other reviews caught my eye because my parents want to sell their home themselves. I started looking through the guide out of curiosity and found myself reading more than half the book. Besides being informative and detailed, it's actually interesting and somewhat funny. i ended up giving it to my father early and he read the entire guide in two days. he said it was the first time he's ever read a how-to book from cover to cover and he's bought over 50! i recommend this book to all people who are planning on buying and selling a home in the future (which is just about everybody) because it is exceptionally clear, informative and jam-packed with advice, facts and data. And it makes a great gift. My dad loved it and is using it to get their home ready to sell By Owner.

                            5 out of 5 stars superb book-saved the day.......2000-06-06

I had to take the time to review this book because my husband and I almost lost our dream home. This superb book helped us save our transaction at the last minute and avoid a horrible lawsuit. Thank God a friend referred us to this book or we wouldn't be living in the perfect home for us. We were buying a home For Sale By Owner and were working with the most difficult seller imaginable. With the help of this guide we not only salvaged the deal, but got better terms and more repairs made to the home. Thank you so much to the author and publisher for writing this book-it's phenomenal. The negotiating chapter is worth thousands of dollars. And to all those buying or selling homes By Owner or even with Realtors-don't do anything until you buy this book. You will be so glad you did.
