5 star, but hoping for a bigger book.......2007-08-11

I give this five stars because it is extremely helpful in instructing you how to form your own dragon, but I was hoping for a bigger book to go along with the brushes, pencils, and paints. It's worth the purchase if you'll use everything in the kit, but the $19.99 book is the better purchase.

It was simple and complicated enough for my 9 year old. The illustrations are great and the details are easy enough to understand. The paint brush was actually a pretty nice one and not plastic stiff brissles.

Useful book for ideas and patterns for bird carving........1999-02-18

Written by Roger Schroeder, this book is a summary of Ernest Muehlmatt's carving techniques that takes the reader through the steps of carving song birds using a power carver. Mr. Schroeder's writting style is difficult to get used to. He uses many un-necessary adjectives to describe the process of carving. Much of the first part of the book is devoted to reviewing Mr. Muehlmatt's personal opinions in bird carving. The reader gets a sense that Mr. Muehlmatt is quite egotistical. Nonetheless, the book does go over a few techniques useful to aquire for both carving and painting birds. Although geared toward people who use power carving tools, much of the information can be used for those who utilize knives and gouges. The second part of the book includes patterns of some common song birds and a pictorograph showing how each one was carved and painted. This turns out to be the most useful part of the book. Overall, readers will gain some knowledge of song bird carving and painting and a lot of insight into the thought process of Ernest Muehlmatt, albeit at the expense of sifting through the cumbersome writing sytle of Roger Schroeder.

Since I believe all art is an impression - whether it is a photo, an oil painting, or a cold sausage lying on the bottom of a bath - I should always advise someone to develop their own 'style,' but a little help can go a long way.

This is a very helpful book - the best I've found on this subject so far.

Ok for copying but not enough to learn the techniques.......2005-03-05

I love impressionist paintings so I purchased this book to learn how to paint like the impressionists. The book's goal is quite ambitious. Teaching you how to paint like each of the impressionist masters in less than 150 pages just isn't possible. But the author does as good as a job as possible in this setting. The book is evenly devided amongst the artists, so you can get a feel for the differences of each artists. Instead of copying an entire painting, which would be much more challenging, she focuses on a small area of the painting. This actually makes sense to explain the techniques.

The shortcomings of this book in my opinion are that I felt the book was more about copying the impressionist paintings rather than learning their techniques. In many cases the copies were pretty good but close examination showed completely different textures and it's obvious the technique was in fact quite different. In other cases the copy wasn't very close to the original.

I've also read "Paint With the Impressionists" and the author took a different approach: He painted original scenes in the styles of the various impressionists. I think that one gives a little more insight to their technique.

I think a better title for this book would be "How to copy impressionist paintings". Overall if you want to learn about the impressionists and need some guideance in copying their paintings, this is not a bad book. However if you do some studying on your own, and have access to a museum to study some original paintings I think you can do equally well without this book.

It was a wonderful experience to create the paintings and text for this book, and I'm happy to say that it is very easy to follow and gives a good deal of insight into how I create my work. I reviewed the production at every step, and Walter Foster was wonderful on all counts!
I have been teaching for over 20 years, and have instructional videos out on both oil and acrylic painting available, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching. I continue to paint full-time, and I'm working on my next book and more video instructional tapes this year.

More Than Just Good Art.......2005-04-26

Although this latest in the series Walter Foster books will provide anyone who might be interested in how to paint horses with excellent information and examples, there is really quite a bit more here than just that. The art is superb and the narrative provides unique insight into the whole artistic process. Elin is not only a gifted painter but a very talented writer as well. Anyone not already familiar with Elin's work can easily find more information by simply using Google to look for Elin Pendleton.
