Included are works by nineteenth century explorers such as Désiré Charnay, William Henry Jackson, and Timothy O'Sullivan; scientific documentation by Alfred Maudslay; modernist visions by Josef Albers, Martín Chambi, Edward Weston, and Laura Gilpin; contemporary work by Marilyn Bridges, Javier Hinojosa, and Edward Ranney. Their photographs and essays reflect a diversity of approaches.

Most of the places shown here have been inhabited continuously since contact or rebuilt over ancient sites. Where some nineteenth-century photographers uncovered jumbles of stone smothered in vegetation, their successors contemplated sites altered by excavation, restoration, earthquakes and floods, vandalism, and the encroachment of settlements that obscure or obliterate ancient structures.

May Castleberry is the editor of a series of artist's books published by The Museum of Modern Art. She has organized the Whitney Museum's exhibition, "Perpetual Mirage: Photographic Narratives of the Desert West," and its accompanying catalogue. Kathleen Howe is Curator of Prints and Photographs, University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque. Martha A. Sandweiss is professor of American studies and history, Amherst College, Amherst, MA. She was previously Curator of Photographs at the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, TX. Edward Ranney has been internationally recognized for his photographs of pre-Columbian art and architecture. He resides in Santa Fe, NM. Georgia de Havenon is an art historian whose fields of study range from Andean textiles to comic books. Active in the preservation of Bolivian archaeological sites, she is the coauthor of Krazy Kat: The Art of George Herriman.

May Castleberry's informed and informative text comprising New World's Old World is wonderfully enhanced for readers with exceptional black and white photos of ancient American cultures before the Spanish conquest. These archaeological sites have survived to be photographed in the 19th century and beyond: individual photos capture the pre-Columbian Native American monuments, their landscapes, and provide clues to ancient cultural customs. A fine visionary approach to archaeology and early Native American peoples.

If mobile commerce is to take off, many issues of micropayments and antifraud need to be addressed. Hu edited this collection of papers which addresses these and other issues. These give a timely discussion about what might be the most pertinent topics facing hardware and software vendors wanting to deploy an application.

Overwhelmingly, the mobile commerce platform appears to be the cellphone, given the sheer prevalence, as compared to PDAs or mobile laptops.

The chapters on possible types of fraud attacks and what countermeasures could be implemented might be the most important sections of the book. As with other types of electronic interactions, like email and web browsing, fraud is likely to surface as a peril if mobile commerce becomes pervasive.

The growth in Internet and Information Technology (IT) has led to revolutionary changes in the way businesses are managed and operated. Scalable Enterprises Systems: An Introduction to Recent Advances addresses six key ideas related to scalable enterprise systems. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 address the modelling aspects of enterprise systems. Chapter 4 discusses distributed control of such systems. Chapter 5 discusses the information systems modelling and implementation of the enterprise system with a transportation example. Given that enterprise systems produce and deal with large volumes of data, data mining is taken as a topic in Chapter 6. The need for a research test-bed is critical to study and analyze enterprise systems and this is the topic of Chapter 7. Implementation level details play a vital role in studying the scalability of large-scale systems. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 deal with several applied and implementation aspects, such as publish-subscribe middleware, auctions in the context of reverse logistics, and value net implementation.

This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of logistics, supply chain management, transportation, and enterprise integration. It will be of special interest to professionals in IT at the detailed implementation level and at the strategic level.
