Book Description
Virtually every structure that Wright built is represented in this extensive survey of his life's work. His genius at architectural design enable him to work out extremely complex buildings in his head and translate them on to paper in a matter of hours, as the famous story of his design presentation of Falling Water illustrates. His work continues to draw great admiration and interest to this day. His often tempestuous and sometimes tragic life and career are given full coverage in this book. Hundreds of photos, both archival and recent chart his amazing work and influence on all who followed. Thomas A. Heinz is a noted Chicago area architect as well as a writer and leading authority on the work of Wright. Among other works, he has written FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT INTERIORS AND FURNITURE (1994)
Customer Reviews:
FLW Survey.......2007-09-22
I recently went to NYC and decided to visit the Guggenheim Museum. Upon arriving from the subway, I had the unfortunate experience of seeing the entire Museum enclosed in scaffolding. However, I went in anyway and on the way out stopped by the gift shop and looked thru the FLW collection of books and discovered this book for less than $14. I thought the book was mispriced. How could such a beautiful book be so inexpensive in NYC? I had to have it.
This book is great for architects or non-architects. It goes thru his entire career without the winded explanations of each of his works. Each surviving work is photographed in color and identified by its original owner with a short highlight of what Wright accomplished. I enjoyed reading this book.
My greatest surprise was finding out that part of the Imperial Hotel was reconstructed else ware in Japan before it was demolished. Heinz took "color" photographs of it!
Okay but several photos are reversed.......2007-08-10
Several photos are reversed in the paperback edition sold here. Very sloppy if you asked me (but it is cheap.) Otherwise some nice photos.
Another poor title from Mr. Heinz.......2007-04-10
Many rave reviews of books by Mr. Heinz seem to be "ringers", perhaps written by the publisher or Mr. Heinz himself. How can you tell a "ringer"? Just by clicking on the reviewers name (like "Dave Anderson" below) and discover that the only review he has written in seven years is for Mr. Heinz's book! Coincidence? Another favorite is to plant one from "a reader". Be wise, people!
Almost Perfect.......2006-08-28
Just got this book - actually the 2002 B&N edition but seems about identical to the edition here. Marvelous photos - considerably better quality than those in Heinz' far more expensive book with all the Wright building locations in detail. Yes, wish EVERY Wright building were here, but close. Have found a few errors in index, etc. but pretty darned good. I'd like to have seen that auto showroom in Manhattan, for example. Well, Heinz doesn't claim to have included everything in this one. Some sort of listing by nation and then state, at least, would have been helpful. Yes, some buildings are referred to with no photo, and then at least one, the Rosenbaum house in Alabama, is in the "Decorative Arts" section but not the main color section (as far as I've found so far).
One silly error: Anderton Court Shops, p. 340 is surely in reverse, as is so clear with the shops' signs backwards! Wonder how that got by.... Will have to check if that Fallingwater photo was corrected for this edition.
All in all a marvelous book with exquisite photos and very well written with stimulating text (for this sort of book - not aiming at the true FLW scholar but just fine for the serious afficianado, which I sure am!).
Incidentally, the first house I ever lived in was on the street in Rochester where the Boynton house is situated - so I have a slightly personal connection with the genius, I've always felt. Great photos of the house here but I'm not so happy the exterior one shows the rear (and doesn't identify it as such, either).
Ken Goldberg, Cleveland, OH
Not Complete, But An Excellent Choice.......2005-02-13
Contrary to what some of the previous reviewers have stated, this book is not a complete reference to all of FLW's buildings, at least not pictorially complete. Instead, the most complete one-volume reference on FLW is Storrer's _The Frank Lloyd Wright Companion_.
That having been said, this is an excellent addition to the Storrer book because all of the pictures are in color, many of them very large and covering an entire page, whereas the Storrer book only has black and white.
For the price, this is an excellent buy, in my opinion, and it was even better when I bought it severeal months ago because at that time Amazon was bundling it for only about $16 with the Storrer book.
For those people who can't spend the almost $80 for the Storrer book, this is a good deal.

Book Description
Frank Lloyd Wright devoted his revolutionary creativity to refining his famed Prairie style, especially in Racine, Wisconsin, called "invention city" for all the innovative products developed there. After 1900, Racine witnessed the most significant stages of the architect's career. Award-winning photojournalist Mark Hertzberg, Director of Photography for the Racine Journal Times, presents a well-researched compendium of warm, lively and revealing anecdotes from people who lived in Wright's private homes and worked in his public buildings. Special attention is devoted to the SC Johnson Administration Building, the subsequent Research Tower, and the Wingspread residenceWright's last and largest Prairie home and built in a unique pinwheel design. Other important commissions discussed and photographed include the Hardy and the Keland houses, the unrealized Roy Petersen House, the YWCA, and the airport lounge/café project. Hertzberg also briefly discusses the Monolith and the Johnson homes, Wright's dreams for affordable housing.
Customer Reviews:
An in-depth analysis of Wright's architectural achievements .......2004-11-08

Book Description
The textile-block system was a fascinating experiment that Frank Lloyd Wright conducted from about 1922 to 1932 as part of his quest to find a new system of construction using a standardized building material based on the idea of twentieth-century machine technology. Robert Sweeney has meticulously researched the textile block system, providing a case-by-case account of each project, commenting on Wright's clients, collaborators, and contractors, and positioning Wright's experiment firmly within the larger historical context of concrete block technology. Sweeney traces the forms of several of the early concrete block projects to Wright's own earlier work, clarifies an array of important technical challenges the architect faced, and notes the numerous block shapes required for execution
The concrete block experiment was firmly rooted in the concept of architectural simplification that Wright established at the outset of his career. It was begun in Hollywood, where he was living at the time, but was part of a larger vision with global application. Wright pursued the concept with a sense of mission, designing approximately thirty projects through the decade. Sweeney shows, however that this technical evolution can be explained in just three designs: the canonical Millard house of February 1923; and in two unexecuted projects, the Community Playhouse, "Little Dipper," for Aline Barnsdall, and in designs for a resort hotel for the Arizona desert.
Although Wright began with structure, Sweeney points out that he was primarily interested in form: technology of assembly was only a path to architectural creation. As the structural system matured - a process coinciding with the evolution of the minimalist International Style in Europe - the buildings became increasingly architectonic; forms were simplified, and the initial fascination with ornament all but disappeared.
Robert L. Sweeney is Executive Director of the R. M. Shindler House in Los Angeles. His comprehensive annotated bibliography on Wright was published in 1978.

Book Description
"What a fascinating book Mollenhoff and Hamilton have written. Monona Terrace is one of the most controversial and exciting buildings my grandfather ever designed. Their wonderfully detailed and lavishly illustrated book is a joy to read. I know my grandfather would be extremely pleased."-Eric Lloyd Wright, architect
"This richly researched history will appeal not only to admirers of Frank Lloyd Wright, but to everyone interested in the interplay of politics, economics, culture, and public space in twentieth-century urban America. This is popular history at its best."-Paul Boyer, Merle Curti Professor of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison
"I can say without reservation that the Monona Terrace project is one of Wright's most original and important designs. . . . It is important for the study of American urbanism and city planning in general; for what it reveals of the intimate relations between architecture and politics in the twentieth century; and for Wright's own involvement in and contribution to these questions."-Neil Levine, Emmet Blakeney Gleason Professor of Fine Arts, Harvard University, author of The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright
With sumptuous illustrations and superb documentation, the extraordinary story of the epic fifty-nine-year civic battle to build one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important designs is finally told in Frank Lloyd Wright's Monona Terrace: The Enduring Power of a Civic Vision, by David Mollenhoff and Mary Jane Hamilton.
Opened in the summer of 1997 as a convention and community center, Monona Terrace was first conceived by Wright in 1938 and resulted in ten designs, thousands of drawings, five local referenda, ten lawsuits, and several acts of the state legislature. Mollenhoff and Hamilton provide the definitive history of the building's design, the tempestuous relationship of Wright to his hometown of Madison, and the community leaders and activists who rallied to oppose or support the project. Drawing from the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, thousands of newspaper accounts, extensive government records, and dozens of interviews, the book also features more than 200 illustrations in color and black and white, including many published here for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Splendid Contribution to Wright Literature.......1999-12-01
The story of Monona Terrace, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and updated by Taliesin Architects (led by Wright apprentice Tony Puttnam) to conform to current code and requirements, here receives the sensitive and perceptive treatment it deserves. The book's many excellent features include clear and graceful writing, beautiful illustrations integrated aptly into the text, and balanced consideration of controversial subjects. The authors' account of the life of Frank Lloyd Wright and their treatment of the political history of Madison provide the context that make the Monona Terrace story so fascinating. This is a valuable book indeed.

Good book describing the entire history of Monona Terrace.......1999-08-12
Mollenhoff and Hamilton have done a great job doing research for this book. The background on how Monona Terrace came to be is fascinating. The people and relationships important in Madison's architecture and politics eventually get discussed in this book. About the only thing you could possibly criticize is the rehash of FLLW biography which doesn't need to appear here. This is a minor criticism, as I realize that for some readers this may be the only FLLW book they own.

Leadership Is an Art
ASIN: 0802849229 |
Book Description
In Called to Serve internationally respected CEO Max De Pree offers experienced advice on how to create a successful nonprofit board.
Now retired as chairman of the board of Herman Miller Inc., Max De Pree has been lauded by Forbes, Fortune, and The Wall Street Journal as one of the most sensitive and successful leaders in the business world. This experience comes through clearly as De Pree lays out the nuts and bolts of nonprofit organization and provides the direction necessary to establish and nurture a volunteer board.
Based on De Pree's many years of service on nonprofit boards, his work as a consultant in the field, and his work as a teacher who has already used this material successfully in numerous seminar settings, Called to Serve will benefit readers involved with any of the wide range of volunteer-based organizations, from boards of churches, hospitals, and libraries to boards of public works, foundations, and schools.
Customer Reviews:
a primer for working with volunteers.......2006-02-20
Called to Serve is recommended reading by all YMCA staff who work with policy making volunteers. It is designed as "letters to a friend" and covers the why, how and what in working with volunteers/boards in a conversational way. It is not overwhelming, nor does it get into a lot of governance issues. It leads you to understand the meaning and purpose of volunteerism and many, many lessons as to roles of volunteers, meeting development, strategic planning, effective committees, etc. I highly recommend it!
Powerful Insights In Concise Form.......2004-10-22
Truly an enjoyable, profitable read with many treasures for the one seeking advice on non-profit or volunteer boards.
This is packaged in letter form of author writing advice to a friend about such board memberhsip and leadership.
Just a few of the many gleans one will get: "the board does have obligations in the short term, but the future, with certain expectations, comes first"; "desigining an agenda by following the lines of a bell curve"; "one of the great time wasters for any group is the routine of giving progress reports when there's been no progress"; and the wonderful story of the postmaster who would not be bothered out of a meeting until he heard it was to receive thanks.
One reading this wants to be on any board that Max is on. Also, to invoke some of his wisdom tenderly yet passionately given in this work. Buy one for yourself and all members on your board. It will bring more joy to the member and more service to the organization.
A Primer for Non-Profit Boards.......2001-12-11
De Pree's latest addition to his leadership books such as best-selling Leadership is an Art, Leadership Jazz, and Leading without Power, has turned his vast experience with non-profit boards into a helpful volume about creating an effective volunteer board. The book covers generalities like the expectations of board and staff, as well as specifics like how to construct an agenda. De Pree gets as specific as stating, "The chairperson should not permit anyone to read to the board." Amen to that! The book can be read quickly, referenced easily, and would help create basic principles and expectations for the board. Anyone working with a volunteer board would do well to provide a copy for each board member.

this book is pretty good.......2006-02-02
my mother is dumb as bread and somehow she still understood this pook, its a miracle, i highly suggest it..
Excellent Book.......2005-08-07
I highly recommend this book for those of you who are taking Real Estate classes and also first time home buyers. Edith Lank gives a clear understanding of each chapter; there's also a practice exam after each chapter. This book is my bible for Real Estate!
Clear and thorough.......2005-07-19
I bought this book for a class I am taking at a local college, in preparation for the NYS R.E. Salesperson's License.
The author, Edith Lank, does an excellent job of explaining all the industry terminology and gives a clear and thorough treatment of the subject.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning the basics of real estate practice.
This is the Standard Class Reference for NY DOS Class.......2004-06-23
I am in the middle of New York's prerequisite course for the Dept. of State exam. In searching for an acceptable school I became aware that hands down all the schools I engaged used Edith Lank's Mod R E Practices in NY (8th ed.) as the classroom text.
As far as it's readability, it is indeed a textbook, and reads that way. Pertinent areas are of the text are in a light blue to punctuate their importance ( I think I would have used red myself). These areas have mostly coincided with what the teacher asks you to highlight as important Exam points. Also, there are questions at the end of each chapter to reinforce the points of the chapter. A reasonable amount of time is spent on basic math concepts (algebra and geometry) if you paid attention in High School you can glean this chapter. The general topics include:
Deeds
Mortgages
Basic Finance
Liens
Easements
Laws of Agency
Contracts
Closings
Estates and Interests
Some of the students in the class complained that it uses too much legalese and reads like a Law book. Although this is not a law book per se, it deals with laws and statutes, regulations, interpretations of law, etc. So it should be a little more legalese than other types of reading.
There were a few typos in the main text as well as the Q/A sections. The book reads well enough to prompt me to purchase Lank's Test Prep guide as well, although I do not have it yet After taking the exam I will leave feedback as to the helpfulness of the exam Prep.
In general, I would recommend this book not only to those studying to be an agent, but for first time home buyers as well. The downstate region of NY (from Westchester down through Long Island) is different from the rest of the entire Unites States when it comes to Real Estate law and practices/customs. The information contained therein will help in knowing what your options are and who is working for/against you in the transaction. Or if you are just an information junkie, this is a great way to learn about the trade.
Everything You Need To Know.......2004-06-22
This is a great book although if you havent taken your Real Estate course yet you may want to wait because this book was provided for us when we took the class. This book teaches you about the laws, math, whos who, and who does what. At the end of each chapter there is a summary and questions and in the back of the book there is a test that will get you ready for the state test. The only thing this book does not do is that it doesnt really go over any skills or tips on selling real estate. Overall, its a must have book.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ!!.......2007-08-08
Author Seth Margolis perfectly captures the life, times, and unique environment of New York City circa the early 2000s. Watch and laugh as he describes the incredible ascent of the New York City real estate market contrasted with the simultaneous decent of the lives of the characters within it.
Fun, funny, insightful, and just plain entertaining.
What a delightful treat.......2007-05-02
From the reviews I had read and the blurb on the book jacket, I was expecting a delicious peeping-tom view of the rich and famous--a sort of Tom Wolfian treatment of the housing market and related obsessions of the movers and shakers in Manhatten. I enjoy such books for the same reason I enjoy regency novels. These novels of manners present a snapshot of a culture most of us will never experience (except in these books). From our comfortable world we can sneer at the foolish lives of these wealthy and influential people and get some satisfaction when their self-centered, materialistic pursuits end in financial and social ruin.
Unfortunately, most books of this type are like a scrumptious chocolate eclaire--lots of fluff, little substance. And, too often, after finishing one, the reader--like the diet-breaker--feels guilty, restless and unsatisfied. Because, I think, like ancient romans at the coliseum or modern television viewers of Jerry Springer's shows, we have gleefully watched the destruction of another living creature from a position of lofty and judgmental safety. We know nothing about the individuals--beyond a brief stereotypical description which plugs them into a certain social and economic strata. And we care even less.
So imagine my surprise as I discover, not only the witty dissection of these lives in the Big Apple, but a thoughtful and compassionate exploration of those lives.
Not an eclaire, but a four-course meal. Wow! And what a page turner.
I loved the way you framed the book with Lucinda's brittle narration (I believe these were the only two segments in her point of view). She becomes a modern day chorus/prophet/philosopher explaining, from her perspective, the housing market, other financial trends and the culture of a certain group of New Yorkers.
I loved Peggy and Lily and immediately cast the movie (Bette Midler and Julia Roberts). You didn't romanticize either one or hesitate to show their character flaws. But you made them human, and strong, and resilient. Lily may have fallen from the luxurious nest she'd built so pain-stakingly, but she doesn't collapse. Unlike her husband who runs away from trouble, she faces it head on and, though some of her methods are less than conventional or even legal, she survives and eventually triumphs. You don't give us any unrealistic expectations. Lily may have chosen the candy man over her exonerated Wall Street financier husband, but there's no doubt she will nudge Larry into franchising his Broadway Nut Shoppes--she's already remodeling his apartment. And he'll be a success due to her social skills--she was, after all, the biggest rain-maker for Barnett's firm. But you delve beneath her social-climbing, status-seeking, law-breaking surface and show a real person who has the courage to analyze her life and figure out what she wants. And, upon finishing the book, I am cheering for her and Larry, for Peggy and Monroe, Sophie and William and Paco, Rosemary and Guy, Mohammed and his family. And I am hoping and believing they will be just fine.
I have a collection of books that I re-read often as a special treat, knowing I will gain something new with each reading and also lift my spirits. They are all what John Gardner describes as "moral fiction" which I take to mean life-affirming. This collection includes Faulkner, Morrison, Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, Austin, Grisham, Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich and a few others. These books make me laugh and cry and sigh with contentment. I've added Closing Costs to this particular bookshelf
Couldn't put it down!.......2006-10-19
I loved Seth Margolis's book Closing Costs. It was very funny, the plot moves along, the characters are inter-woven in a believable fashion. You can hear Margolis's sly wit throughout as he comments on the characters and trends in New York real estate and the dot com world. A very satisfying read.
"You are where you live".......2006-09-28
I'm surprised this book hasn't been more successful, especially among real estate-obsessed New Yorkers. It's well written, fun, and has many interesting and recognizable characters, including the Master-of-the-Universe wannabe and the wicked broker.
For those of us who lived through the hopes and broken dreams of the dot-com boom, this is a fun, engaging read.
If you liked "Bonfire of the Vanities" or "A Man in Full" you'll love "Closing Costs'.......2006-09-26
If you want a highly entertaining inside look at the surreal world of New York City real estate, buy this book. The characters are sharply drawn and if you live in NYC (or have spent a lot of time there) you'll recognize most of them, esp. the "take no prisoners" she-devil real estate broker.
A great read that could be a great movie someday.
