Book Description
The most comfortable rooms in the world are those that have aged gracefully. Bearing the traces of their owners' lives and tastes, these spaces beckon you to enjoy them, to make yourself at home. The Well-Worn Interior is an illuminating tour of these beautiful rooms, visiting older residences and historic houses in the United States and throughout Europe and exploring the evolution of these special places over time. There is much to learn from these timeless interiors.
Evocative photographs explore the warmth, charm, and beauty of faded and gently decayed interiors-the peeling paint, vintage fabrics, worn floors, and other testaments to a place's history. This "lived-in" look will appeal to anyone seeking the comfort of home. As subtle as the loving wear of decades can be, there are simple strategies for achieving such an intimate aura without working, or waiting, all those years. The Well-Worn Interior is the essential guide to helping you make decoration decisions that are sensitive to your existing home. A reference section illustrates how long-neglected techniques such as limewash, graining, and gilding can be applied to today's interiors, and a directory points you toward the right materials.
Customer Reviews:
A bit of a disappointment.......2007-09-08
Yes, indeed, this book highlights well-worn interiors, but the vast majority of the photos are from old English homes and townhouses. I was hoping for more variety, more applicability to the Average Joe's well-worn interior dreams.
Not a do it yourself interiors book...........2006-02-26
Not intended for those wanting a simple step by step to revamp their kitchen or lounge. This book is filled with sumptious images of spaces well lived in and loved. A fabulous reference for architects or designers who want to inject character and texture into a space.
#12 Grimauld Place, ala Harry Potter :).......2005-09-07
Pealing, ancient wall paper.... Narrow dim hallways.... ballrooms with ancient chandeliers, what the well dressed haunted house is wearing today. Formerly grand interiors that have NEVER BEEN RENOVATED - It's all about "Authentic." Not one single floor has even a SPECK of finish left on it, they're referred to as "Well scrubbed." Most of these original interiors are European or English from 200 years ago or so. Once grand, these houses are beyond lived in. There is a least one old house from the sourthern United States featured.
The Well Worn Interior.......2005-07-20
Although these interiors are probably too worn for American comfort, the style shown gives one ideas to help design an inviting room.
Certainly not for everyone, but..........2005-02-11
If you love old houses and comfortable, worn furniture, this is the book for you. I happen to be one of those folks who drive down the road and enjoy looking at old, abandoned homes. I find the natural deterioration of a building to be a beautiful thing. As such a person, I found this book to be beautiful, with excellent ideas for designing my home - though many of the effects shown are reproduceable only by age and neglect.
If you are of a similar mindset to mine, you will love this book. If not, well, you might want to look elsewhere.

Book Description
Following The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay, this second book in the series takes an exciting look at one of the most popular materials in crafting today: paper. Artists have constantly pushed the envelope of this versatile medium; these pages showcase their innovative techniques along with gorgeous work that’s sure to inspire. And no previous jewelry-making experience is needed! All the basics are beautifully laid out, from an overview of the variety of available papers to an exploration of techniques. Easy-to-follow how-to photos clarify each step. Best of all are the stunning projects, including Yael Friedman’s simple “diamond” solitaire rings; K. Dana Kagrise’s elegant white bracelet made from vellum; and Dorthea Hosom’s brooches that feature sophisticated collages.
Customer Reviews:
The most fun you can have with paper!.......2007-07-01
I got this book for ideas on inexpensive jewelry to make with middle schoolers. Some of this jewelry may be difficult for them, but I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of jewelry you can make from paper. I would have given the book five stars for clear instructions and imagination. The only reason I downgraded it to four was that a number of the projects will not hold up to normal wear. They're all fun for at least a day, though.
At last a brilliant Paper Jewellery Book .......2007-01-07
At last a book that takes paper beyond rolling around a straw! A handy reference section at the start with good explanations of the type of papers available, leading to tools and supplies. The 35 projects contained within are all achievable with a little patience. The step by step instructions are clear and consice. Some projects also include hand drawn diagrams to assist in construction whilst others also give you the benefit of templates to copy - very handy. But it is the beautiful pictures of the finished projects and the stunning gallery that I enjoy the most. When using this book in classes, I often hide the title "paper" and show students photos, asking them to tell me what the item is made of, rarely do they guess paper and then they are totally captured to try this wonderful medium. Thanks Lark/Marthe for another great book.

Make beautiful jewerly inexpensively & easily.......1999-09-06
This is a wonderful book that shows you how to make stunning jewelry inexpensively. The clear step-by-step instructions accompanied by color photos make creating these works of art easy.
The techniques include rolling & stringing paper beads, making strip paper-mache, & decoupage as well as paper weaving & folding. There are even basic instructions for making your own paper.
Some great projects include a hair slide, flapper's bead necklace, triple strand bracelet, basket weave barrette, pinwheel earrings, floral decoupage locket, lady pin, kite pendant, origami fold bracelet, & golden braid choker.
Several beautiful paper samples that you can make color copies of or tear out & use are a nice bonus. I recommend this book for anyone. Projects are simple enough for children, yet rewarding for adults.

Customer Reviews:
Simply the best. Too bad the publisher has let it go out of print........2005-09-30
This is the best studio lighting textbook I have ever found. It's well written, concise, and well illustrated. Kolb and Overturf do an excellent job of explaining everything from the most basic lighting setup to the most complex. Natural light, hot lights and strobes are all covered. In addition there's a significant amount of information on set construction and excellent suggestions for designing your own studio. Best of all Kolb has put a great deal of effort into explaining why one would want to choose a particular approach to lighting a subject. The underlying message being - just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Unfortunately the publisher has chosen not to reprint this book. As the current used prices indicate - it's in demand. Someone in the McGraw-Hill sales department needs to take notice. Too bad they're not because I'm trying to adopt a new book for my large format photography and lighting class and no other seems to fit the bill quite as well.
An excellent studio textbook........1999-01-21
This is an excellent studio photography textbook. It does not use the dry "how to" approach which is the downfall of many photography books.Full of stimulating theory and helpful specifics this book has changed the way I work in the studio and teach photography.

Customer Reviews:
More great Hägar!.......2002-04-16
This 4"x7" paperback book is a collection of Hägar the Horrible comics by the incomparable Dik Browne (1917-89). Here in this book are many adventures of Hägar, his friend Lucky Eddie, his formidable wife Helga, his beautify though self-conscious daughter Honi, his bookish son Hamlet, and Hägar's less than competent crew. In this book, Hägar must face a disobedient boomerang, angry gods, enemy armies, the devil, and (most frightening) a very angry Helga!
Recently, while digging through an old box full of books, I came across several of my treasured Hägar books, of which this is one. My children (girl eleven, boy eight) grabbed it away from me, and were soon happily reading the jokes out loud to all present. It is so nice to see that Hägar can entrance the young of today, much as he did me. My personal favorite is when Hägar checks the cows to get a weather forecast, my wife liked Hägar's diet, and my children really loved seeing a devil with a red beard and horns who looked just like a certain Viking we all know!
We all love this book, and you will too. If you can get it, then do so!

Succinct!.......2006-04-06
You already know how to read and apply guidelines. Here is an excellent little guide to giving your foundation proposals a compelling, readable edge.
Great Guide for Foundation Proposal Writing.......2004-10-19
Joseph Barbato has written a very useful and easy-to-read book on how to write foundation grant applications.
Rather than focusing on the nuts and bolts of proposals, he focuses on the essential lessons a good grant application writer must know or learn to be successful. Using the advice in this book will help the reader think and act like an experienced proposal writer.
The chapters are short, concise, and well-written -- a good mantra for crafting successful foundation proposals. Chapter titles include "Maps Help," "Needing Money Isn't Enough," and "Getting Unstuck." If you've written a lot of proposals and helped a lot of clients, you'll find yourself saying "Yes, people need to know that!" as you read the book.
I recommend the book highly. I wish that the author had addressed Federal and other governmental proposal writing as well, for two main reasons. First, while it's a great idea to solicit advice and counsel from a foundation's staff, it's between difficult and impossible to work with a government program officer while drafting a proposal. Working without this counsel requires the proposal writer to hone all the more closely to the written application guidelines -- a point not made as directly in the book as it might have been.
Second, the very brevity and conciseness valued by foundation program officers may actually work against a Federal or other governmental proposal being funded. The written guidance often mandates a certain amount of repetition between proposal sections, both in material to be covered and, occasionally, in the structure of the proposal itself.
These two small issues aside, I really like this book. One particularly effective use of it would be as a supplemental text when delivering grantsmanship training. The book includes much of the good advice a trainer would give orally while handing out written materials on the minutiae of the grant application. Reading "Knockout Proposals" is like having a grantsmanship coach at your side during the writing process.
Short, Sweet, Right on Target.......2004-09-19
I like my information FAST and accurate. And How to Write Knockout Proposals gives me just that. Short chapters that cover essential points in lively language. The whole book takes about an hour to read.
Barbato doesn't dither. What other writers say in 300 pages, he manages to say in under 130.
I was scared of writing proposals before. I'm not anymore.
I have yet to find this book interesting ..........2004-08-18
Because I have yet to find this book. However, a "top-drawer" grant systems administrator brought it to my attention, and checking out the reviews so far, I see that the author's mother (aka "a reader") really liked it.
I'm sure we'll really like it to, once we can lay hands on it. I know; I know: you can buy the darn thing, but you can drop a buck in a one-arm (one-button?) bandit and hope you get cherries, not lemons. "When Life hands you lemons..." goes the old saw...throw 'em back; break Life's picture window.
Ok now, some booksellers start stocking this book 'cause I don't buy if I can't try. Your humble savant,
The best book of proposal tips I've read.......2004-07-02
I read Joseph Barbato's earlier book, Writing for a Good Cause, which I liked, and picked up this new one on How to Write Knockout Proposals. The blurbs on the book from fundraising experts like Jerold Panas and others were great. Panas was right: "Makes every other book on the subject obsolete." I especially like the fact this is authoritative information in the form of a fast read. Most of us don't have time to read longwinded books about fundraising. Barbato offers dozens of practical tips that reflect his long career as a top writer for NYU and the Nature Conservancy in major capital campaigns. I can't imagine anyone involved in proposal writing who would not benefit from this new book.
