A great reference book.......2002-05-07
This is a book that sometimes resembles Neufert's, but it has a lot of additional information you might need that will make easier the process of designing various types of buildings. It gives you notions, ideas, proportions, measures and everything you need to know when starting a project. A must-have to any architect (specially with these incredible low-priced used ones. I got mine for 13 bucks and it's absolutely like new).
Over priced.......1999-07-02
Amozon.com says that they save you money on books but this book cost a cool 150 smackers even if a customer has purchased many books from them -- the book is valuable and used like a dictionary for reference -- why can't we get a resonable price for it -- Amozon.com send out thank you and promises to do their best to keep the price lowest but why do they continue to bate and switch.

Long Version of Poore's Explanations.......2006-06-06
A longer version (282 pages of small type) of Poore's Pictorial Composition book and worth the read though the shorter one (104 pages of larger type) ISBN: 0486233588 is easier to read and summarizes well. This long version is worth reading for art lovers and practitioners who want to know it all.
Poore is the only author I know of that has a reasonably complete list of composition strategies. He lists the rules that other writers say everyone knows but then they don't tell you what what they are!
Thankfully not a modern day "vanity press" textbook but a fully realized theory of applied rules that an artist can really use. While modern day textbooks seem to be trying to obscure the information Poore actually makes sense of it. The best source of composition information I know of first written in 1903. This 1979 version maintains the voice of the original writing. Highest recommendation.
Book Description
The private Andy Warhol talks: about love, sex, food, beauty, fame, work, money, success; about New York and America; and about himself--his childhood in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, good times and bad times in the Big Apple, the explosion of his career in the sixties, and life among celebrities.

Ghostwritten by Bob Colacello and Pat Hackett.......2007-07-03
According to page 208 of the Warhol Biography 'Holy Terror; Andy Warhol Close Up' by Bob Colacello (1990), Warhol delegated the actual writing of the book to Colacello and Pat Hackett. Colacello wrote the first draft and Hackett wrote the version that was published. Warhol's contribution was to set up the deal, offer a few suggestions and one-liners, and read the finished pages before they were sent off to the publisher.
If a silkscreen created by Warhol's assistants (carefully aping his art style) but signed by Warhol is still "authentic," does that mean an autobiography written by Warhol's assistants (carefully aping his speaking style) but credited to Warhol on the cover is still an "authentic" autobiography?
Colacello's biography also reveals that some of the text in the book was borrowed from press clippings written about Warhol. Page 207: "It was Andy's idea to cull phrases from the Factory clippings scrapbook to describe what he saw in his mirror: 'The affectless gaze... the wasted pallor... the childlike, gum-chewing naivete... the slightly sinister aura... the long bony arms, so white they looked bleached...'"
Like nearly all of Warhol's art, his Philosophy was our idea of Warhol, rearranged and reflected back at us. When explaining why he covered the original Factory with silver, Warhol offered a list of reasons ending with "...most of all, silver represents narcissism. Silver is the color of a mirror."
straight from the master.......2007-04-07
I used to think that Andy Warhol was not a real artist, only a great self promoter. This book, written in his own words, proved my prejudice to be completely wrong and uncalled for. Much of what we encounter today in popular culture was forecasted in this book by Warhol. If only the best economists could even be 10 percent as right about their forecasts!
Andy Would Be Pleased.......2007-02-21
I had a great buying experience. The book was in mint condition and came within a reasonable time.
Loved this quirky read!.......2006-12-07
I was hanging out at a Borders one afternoon when i got hold of this book and I read all 200 something pages in a few intense hours! I'm sure the borders staff didnt appreciate me reading this gem for free but I honestly couldn't peel myself from it. What a character this Warhol guy was. Check this one out!!!
Of course it's brilliant, and it's b.s., which is why it's brilliant..........2006-09-19
Seriously, at a certain point when I was around 18 or 19, this was my Bible, or my Little Red Book - I and a handful of friends (Warhol died at about the same time) took every syllable here very, very seriously.
This is kinda funny to me now, but it's a great book still, a truly unique cultural artifact. Warhol - as always maintains the trademark deadpan aloofness here, which had a few odd purposes beyond simply looking cool: there were rare instances when he'd drop his guard and a hint of social relevance would enter the frame, which did run contrary to most of what Warhol did, here especially. Doing so would turn art into something didactic, and - as a joke doesn't work if you have to explain the punch line, art flops if you have to lead your viewers, or readers, by the hand into your meaning. Thus Warhol's stylish glibness and affected cool served a brilliant purpose - it made demands of everyone who came into contact with it.
Here we have Warhol's epigrams - spread out like some artboy approximation of 'Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung,' all about equally quotable, useless, devoid of literary merit, yet (unlike the leaden and ideologically bankrupt Chairman) also stylish and memorable, even at their most zoned out.
The other great method behind Warhol's facades is here as well - the same impulse that turned canned soup into the artworks of a once very, very poor 2nd-generation immigrant's child (if you were going hungry, Campell's soup would in fact become, and possibly remain, a beautiful thing, and we all know that beautiful things are and always will be one of the most fitting of subjects for art). These cryptic sayings and jottings all seem constructed to get us all to see the small stuff for what it is, and learn to appreciate it for that.
Warhol was like Elvis - all things to all people. And about as maddening, contradictory and semiotically intriguing as Elvis. This slim little book is one of his strangest and most magnificent achievements.
-David Alston

Book Description
Lyndon Baines Johnson ascended to the presidency in the wake of tragedy to lead the United States through one of its most violent and divisive decades. His troubled presidency was marked by endless controversies over civil rights, the Vietnam War, foreign policy, and law-and-order issues, among others. Nearly four decades later, it's now possible to reexamine those controversies to illuminate as never before the achievements and failures of one of the nation's most misunderstood presidents.
Drawing upon a wealth of new sources, including recently released phone conversations, these authors shine a bright and probing light on LBJ's beleaguered White House tenure. Collectively, they reinforce the image of Johnson as a highly complex president whose very real achievements have been overshadowed by character flaws and events well beyond his control.
Four chapters focus on LBJ's foreign policies, including a positive appraisal of his handling of the 1964 Panama Crisis, but less favorable assessments regarding the downhill slide into Vietnam, the Six Day War, and policies toward the communist bloc. Yet the authors generally depict a president who, contrary to conventional views, did not allow his domestic agenda to overshadow his efforts as chief architect of foreign policy.
Five other chapters focus on aspects of LBJ's domestic policies that have been largely neglected: women's rights, Native Americans, agriculture, civil disorder, and fiscal policy. Whether responding to urban riots or balancing different versions of the 1964 Farm Bill, Johnson emerges as a president who never lost sight of the political ramifications of his actions and whose legacy is often more complicated than is usually recognized.
All of these writings attest to the complexities of Lyndon Johnson, a larger-than-life leader whose guiding principles can't always be reduced to the catch-phrases he himself and others have employed. The new perspectives and revelations they provide point students, scholars, and presidential buffs alike toward a much more enlightened view of this fascinating figure.

Early B.C........2005-06-10
This is the second of the 120 page Fawcett editions of B.C. compilations. The cartoons are of the very early strips (1960 or so) and the characters really do seem like cave-men (more so than the recent B.C.s) but with contemporary themes and gags. A good addition to your B.C. collection.
Book Description
A 10th-century Chinese mandarin travels to the 20th Century in his time machine, and writes letters home reporting on the strange land of `Zha-ma-ni', in which he is surrounded by giants with big noses, and frightened by the iron carriages called `mo-tao-ka'. We gradually realize that he is in present-day Munich, and the hapless voyager's encounters with modern life and love make delightful reading.

culture shock.......2006-09-02
A man from ancient China purposely travels through time (and accidentally travels through space) to modern-day Munich. Initally he assumes that the strange beasts we all know as cars have gained power over the human population. He is disgusted by the way the Germans, who he assumes are the distant relatives of the Chinese people of his society (since he is initially unaware of his change in location), look with their large, protruding noses and round eyes. He is astonished that they have forgotten how to speak the language of man. They just seem to make gruff noises. Lots of cultural and social differences are showcased in this book in a humorous manner. At one point his German friend explains to him why it's unacceptable in German society to have two girlfriends. This is a very interesting and funny read which I highly recommend.
An almost philosophical reflection on modern life........1998-11-10
The story of a tenth-century Mandarin who travels through time to Germany in the 1980s, Rosendorfer's book is told as a series of letters to a friend back home. At heart, this book is an attempt to examine the fundamental questions of how our lives are affected by progress. For the most part, it succeeds. This book is quite humorous, and a highly enjoyable reading experience. Recommened.

An excellent book dealing with all aspects of the various theories of pyramid construction, preparation of the site, quarrying and shipping of stones, etc. The author performs many calculations to determine the number of stones used, weights, number of men needed to lift, number of hauling ropes, stresses and friction coefficients, etc. Also as a bonus there is the complete list of Kings of Egypt in hieroglyphics as well as a beginner's guide to hieroglyphics!
