Customer Reviews:
Excellent photographs, bad book format.......2002-05-20
I agree with all the reviewers that the 200+ photographs in the book are first-class. The names of Art Wolfe, David Muench, John Shaw, and Willian Neil alone should guarantee that much. The only big complaint I have is that a lot of large-format photographs are splitted onto twoadjacent pages (about 3/4 on one page and 1/4 on the other page). This essentially ruins the composition of those beautifule photographs because it naturually draws your eyes to the split area, regardless of the photographers' intended focus. (In fact, in a number of photographs, the focus is in the split area). Instead of the book's 9 in x 12 in portrait format, they should have used the 12 in x 9in landscape format to avoid the two-page split. Mr. Middleton has a lot to learn about book design. As is, I don't think the book is worth its full [item price]. If you want to have it, buy it used at cheaper prices.
America...God shed His grace on thee.......2000-05-29
I keep this book on the coffee table and thumb through it often. Every time I do, I see something new and wonderful. Originally I bought the book because I know Bill Fortney and thought it would be neat to own his book and I'd have some nice pictures, too. WELL, did I learn a lesson! I have grown to love this book as a reminder of the awesome love and power of God who created all the beautiful places these gifted photographers have captured--from the simple to the majestic. Anyone can take a picture but this is art! ...
very beautiful. well done........1999-05-19
This is a most facinating book with the writings and photography excellent in every way. I am very impressed with all of it.
A Must-have for all who appreciate nature.......1998-06-29
This is a beautiful and well-produced book. Truly a representation of the creme of the crop of american nature photographers. It is both inspiring in it's illustration of some of the country's most beautiful wild areas -- and a strong reminder that we must preserve these areas for the future. I have been fortunate enough to meet the authors and some of the photographers represented in the book, and I am truly impressed by their amazing dedication to their craft and their sincere love and concern for nature. It is evident in these images. I only wish it was larger so the images could be reproduced over one page. Highly recommend.
La creme de la creme!.......1998-02-22
This book contains a beautiful collection of photographs which enables us to appreciate all the majestic and natural beauty North America has to offer. How fortunate we are that the photographers were able to capture such images and present them in the one impeccably produced book. As for the writers, they too have captured a beauty which encourages us to ensure the land remains unspoilt and protected for all to enjoy. The joy of treasuring such a book necessitates a strong desire for more and one can only dream that another book like this will come our way again soon. A true work of art and a source of inspiration.

Pretty good book.......2001-06-06
This book has some good information for anyone considering purchasing a home in France. It's aimed more towards a U.K. citizen, versus a U.S. citizen, but I still found it helpful. Some of the info. applies only to purchases of 'flats' (apartments) and not houses, but he doesn't tell you that. I found out after asking for some of the documentation he mentions. I would recommend the book to anyone considering the purchase of a French property -- get it early so you do it right!
an absolute necessity..........1999-12-15
...if you're thinking about buying property in France. Hampshire is totally on target. I read his book before going through the buying process, and couldn't believe how perfectly his advice dovetailed with my actual experience.
All his information was exactly correct!.......1999-09-24
We JUST (September '99) bought an apartment in Paris, using this book as a daily reference. It helped us immensely, giving us confidence in many procedures from looking for a place initially to the closing, including geat information on insurance and utilities. Definitely a great source!
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Real Estate Horror stories are World-wide.......2004-04-19
The book is informative and an excellent resource though some information is not correct and misleading. Many cautions and horror stories are stated but these facts apply to buying a home anywhere in the world. Dodgy real-estate agents, tradesmen and sellers can also be found world-wide though the impression given is that they are concentrated in Italy. With regards to permits and planning permission it can take up to six months if the building is classified as a Historical building but if it is not a historical building a reply is given within three months. In Italy there is a lot of red-tape and the process of purchasing a property is very different to the English system though the best advice is to have the assistance of a lawyer and use your common sense. The most important thing I learnt when buying a home in Italy is to respect the people and there custom especially if you want to make friends in the community.....of course everyone knows everyone!
Book Description
A complete guide to buying property in Italy, including where to find the perfect house and how to buy it.
Customer Reviews:
More than just buying a house.......2006-01-21
I was sent this book for Christmas since I had stayed in Tuscany and am interested in buying there. Wow! This book is like a Whole Earth Catalog for Italy. Beyond the details on how to buy a house, it's got material on living there in a way that puts you right in the middle. I loved how the author interspersed Italian words and phrases throughout the book and had various glossaries for buying a house and even gardening and dealing with builders doing renovations. I find that I can recall the words easily because of the way he put them in the context of how I would actually use them in conversation to get something I want. The wit and wisdom sidebar on Berlusconi is a real gem. His listing of things like Italian TV and radio, I mean, I can see myself living there, important in the actual determination to buy. Also, he's got Web Site addresses throughout for additional information like real estate agents by region. This is a terrific book that's fun to read and dip into. I recommend it, highly.
history ????.......2004-03-11
This book was well worth the money There are some serious mistakes when dealing with history. other then that a very usefull book.
IF ONLY.......2003-10-15
We bought a house in Cortona Italy 12 years ago only after a long hard search. IF ONLY we had Gordon Neale's book with us on that first trip hunting for the perfect house. His detailed knowledge of the intracacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have had fewer grey hairs if this book was available then
. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a life time to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the cost of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring house buyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. IF ONLY, we had had this book all those years ago, but we have it now and it brings even greater pleasure to our life Bella Italia
Please differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.......2003-10-11
As the author of this book I would like to point out that I am not the same person as my namesake who writes homoerotic novels such as "To Serve Two Masters". "Buying a House in Italy" belongs to a different genre altogether.
Perhaps Amazon could follow the example of their UK branch and put a C in front of my name on their listing to differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.
A good read.......2003-09-24
An excellent guide. I loved the sections on the history of Italy and the one on gardening.
The book is packed with information which is clearly written. It is a joy to read and a must for anyone contemplating buying a house in Italy.
