    Book Description

This forward-thinking survey considers the challenges of making buildings that withstand the vagaries of climate, economy, and limited resources.

Although the tropics cover nearly forty percent of the world's surface, from rain forests to dry desert regions, the architecture of this climactically extreme geographic area has largely gone unnoticed. With exploding populations and numerous ecological and economic concerns, the regions are looking increasingly toward sustainable solutions. In this unique study Wolfgang Lauber explores the ways traditional, pre-colonial structures were better adapted to the area's topography and climate than more modern structures built by European settlers. Numerous photographs, illustrations, and plans examine the continuum of tropical architecture—from the mud hut to the colonial mansion, from bamboo sheds to high-rises, from spontaneous building to urban planning. Studies of the works of such contemporary architects as Rem Koolhaas, Oscar Niemeyer, and Renzo Piano show how modern theories can be adapted to the vernacular cultures in Africa, the Americas, and Asia to create buildings that are both humane and ecologically sound.

    5 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2003-08-19

I really don't think that any artist can survive with just one book on the shelf. This book is a great resource with beautiful step by step photographs. I recommend it to someone with a little experience and foundation. This book is not too intensive but also does not hold your hand at every step. A resource to add to your library. It helped me relax my style a bit.

Ann Pember, author of PAINTING CLOSE-FOCUS FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOR has a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in fashion design and illustration. Before she became a free-lance illustrator, she worked as a commercial artist for many years. Photos in her book show the professional studio where she works. Technically, her work is nearly perfect. I don't particularly care for her rendering of her subject matter as it stikes me as too "commercial" and not very painterly at all, but much can be learned from her book if you have had no other exposure.

Ms. Pember's background in fashion design and illustration are apparent in her work. She takes the reader from photographs of flowers to watercolors of those photographed flowers in several steps. She reveals how the eye is attracted by asymetry (offsetting of the center) and the placement of elements; how backlighting and focused lighting affect the appearance of the subject; how surfaces and background affect the paint and matter in the execution of a watercolor. She spends some time addressing color, but Ms. Pember is not a colorist. She is more concerned with line and the arrangement of elements in a design.

The end result from my perspective are flowers that are somewhat overcontrolled, although she gives the unpracticed eye the exact opposite impression. In the end, her flowers are contrived and not original. The watercolorist can acquire some interesting tips for creating pleasing paintings, but if producing art for commercial purposes is not your goal you may find Pember's book less rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Capturing Flowers "Up-Close and Personal".......2000-09-08

I love looking at this book! For years I have been filing away myriads of floral photos with the hope that one day I might attempt to capture them in paint. I muse over these photos from time to time wondering just how a painter might do them justice. I need wonder no more. In Ann Pember's "Painting Close-Focus Flowers in Watercolor", she has been able to demonstrate a variety of step-by-fluid-step techniques to bring high drama to the world of simple blooms. Her close-ups of hollyhocks, gloxinias; and peonies float upon the pages which are jam-packed with carefully chosen, eye-pleasing colors. Thankfully, the vibrancy of Ms. Pember's palette has been well-reproduced in the printing process. There is so much valuable information packed into this book. One should read it from cover to cover initially to pick up all the helpful hints. What a wealth of knowledge Ms. Pember has shared with her readers including: preferences for specific papers, paints and brushes; how to avoid turning paints into "mud"; and my toughest assignment - how to see shapes and values as patterns; to mention a few. Ann Pember's close-up compositions are outstanding. Even if my attempts pale in comparison to this well-seasoned artist's, she is very encouraging. She reinforces the idea that given some degree of perseverence and practice, we too may develop our own means of capturing nature's beauties "up-close and personal".

Now available in paperback, Lauren Greenfield's acclaimed Fast Forward is a powerful look at Los Angeles youth culture and its influence on the rest of our society. From the affluent children of the Westside to the graffiti gangs and party crews of East LA, young Angelenos reckon with an overwhelming barrage of advertising and entertainment images emphasizing money, possessions, and eternal youth. This collection of 79 color photographs, accompanied by interviews with the children and their parents, reveals the realities of growing up fast in a culture that is at once irresistible and unforgiving. A compelling precursor to Greenfield's widely praised Girl Culture, Fast Forward is a telling document of the direction in which today's ultra image-conscious culture is pointed.

A 13-year-old girl works out at the track with her personal trainer. Two 17-year-olds caress their newborn. A 7-year-old pauses on the red carpet outside the Shrine Auditorium on her way into the Academy Awards ceremony. A 16-year-old lifts his shirt to reveal a hairless chest wreathed in tattoos. These are but a few of the provocative images that fill the pages of Fast Forward, a collection of portraits capturing children from East L.A. to Bel-Air. Many of these photos are accompanied by the kids' own words about their lives and the world around them, often revealing a wisdom beyond their years and a naiveness--a failure to understand the values in which they are immersed. What emerges from these images and words is an alluring, if at times disturbing, portrait of a generation perhaps too quick to leave its innocence behind.

                        Book Description

Photographer Lauren Greenfield capures often shocking, always startling images of children at school, at play, or at home in the precocious city of Los Angeles. The stunning color photographs range from the children of the gang culture of South Central and East L.A. to the affluent, often show-business world of the Westside. Underlying is the overwhelming importance of image and celebrity, with its materialistic trappings of fast cars and expensive clothes. 80 full-color photos.

The book was brillant. It showed every aspect of living in LA. The articles and reviews that surrounded the book after it's publisihng were off base. Lauren should be Proud of herself.

Well if you open this book you'll see my friends and classmates . . . Although I wonder why the pictures in this book are considerably older than the copyright date, this book does and excellent job of profiling the kids of LA in the early nineties not 1997. California experienced quite an economic uproar since since those Bar Mitzah days! Also, I wonder why this book is entitled "Growing Up in the Shadow of Hollywood." As one of those "shadowed" youths ( I attended the Harvard-Westlake School whose prom clad students appear in the beginning of the book), I can assure you that Hollywood is neither the mainstay of the Beverly Hills culture nor is it the mainstay of the South Central culture, both which are depicted in this book. Nevertheless, this book creates a realistic picture of life in 90210, 90077, and the all the other 90000's . .

4 out of 5 stars Beverly Hills 90201 meets Village of the Damned.......1997-07-23

The only thing scarier than some of the pictures in this chronicle of teenage LA, is knowing that it's only the tip of the iceberg. From the rich brats to the gangsters and their wannabe imitations, Greenfield does a great job of capturing the shallow lives of these kids. Almost Jacob Riis-like in its literal illumination of the subject

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book For The Mad Mag. Fan.......2000-07-14

One of the most consistantly great things about Mad Magazine over the last 30+ years has been Al Jaffee's fold in's which were always on the inside back cover. This book features many of them with a before (not folded) and an after (folded) picture. The book is very sleek because of the excellant job that was done with the fold ins. If you're a long time Mad Magazine fold in fan you need this book.

In addition to writing bestselling books (The Digital Economy, Growing Up Digital, and Paradigm Shift), Don Tapscott is chairman of the Alliance for Converging Technologies, an organization with a "focus on competitive advantage in the digital economy," whose members include companies such as the Bank of Montreal Canada, Federal Express, General Motors, and Xerox. For Blueprint to the Digital Economy, Tapscott puts on an editor's hat and, along with Alex Lowy and David Ticoll, presents a collection of 20 articles that speak to all aspects of doing business in the digital age. The articles, written by members of the alliance, cover a wide range of topics from business design at GM and the role of banking in the digital economy to creating communities in cyberspace and the role of government in the networked world. The real strength of books in this genre is not their writing and presentation, which tend to be uneven, but rather the breadth of experience and perspective they communicate. And experience and perspective is something that this book has in spades. If you're at all interested in how business today is positioning itself for tomorrow, then Blueprint to the Digital Economy is definitely worth a look. --Harry C. Edwards

4 out of 5 stars A must read book(Blue print to digital Economy).......2001-03-27

It is a great opportunity to write a review about this book. In short words I will say The Digital Economy is a must read book. This book is useful for seasoned businessmen, new entrepreneur, investor, and any one who wants to know what is the effect of information revolution in modern world. Should one be scared that there is going to have a drastic change in the business philosophy? To find an answer one must read this book. This book is divided into four parts, The New Rules of Competition, Transformation in Industry Due to Digital revolution, Interworked Enterprises in modern Digital age, and Governance in Digital Age. This book is valuable resource, rather I would say, is a must for any entrepreneur. Also this will be a valuable source of information for modern managers. I feel glad to have gained more information from this book I strongly recommend this book to every one who is being a part of Internet. Business, individuals who browse the net for news and information, and people who contribute information on to Internet. This book beautifully analyzes the impact of modern digital technology on business strategic, and it's socio-economic behavioral pattern.

                                3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2001-02-16

Drawing this blueprint to the digital economy required the combined labors of three editors (Don Tapscott, Alex Lowry and David Ticoll) and various expert authors drawn from academia, research and corporate leadership. The 20 essays that make up the book focus on industrial transformation, new rules for competing in the e-age, the computer-based network model and changes in government structure and policy in a networked world. The high-level authors contribute thoughtful articles, though some ideas overlap and some thick spots of techie language and academic theorizing emerge along the way. More problematic, since the e-commerce environment changes so quickly, the book has a slight air of déjà vu. Its discussion of emerging trends freezes in flight and becomes a kind of fluid history of a particular time in e-business' evolution. Still, we recommend this book - for the fascinating movement it captures - to the general reader interested in business- and information-age topics and to top managers.

5 out of 5 stars A truthfully understable "organic organization" profile.......2001-01-24

It does a good job of depicting the pros and (today's) cons of the digital economy and its foundation the "organic organizations". Nothing to clash but to evolve from the old pyramidal or tree looking org chart that all we do know never works entirely in that way. A must for every one involved in a corporative enviroment today or aspiring to form its own one.

4 out of 5 stars Don Tapscott "Blueprint".......2000-02-03

Not since the transformation into the Industrial Age has western society undergone as fundamental a change as it is now experiencing. The ongoing transition into a new economy, new social order and new political interaction is bringing about fear, discontent, and confusion. Tapscott's "Blueprint to the Digital Economy" is a wonderful primer for those unfamiliar with these changes.

This anthology ties together several social, economic and political themes into clearly organized, concisely written articles that both the futurist and the neo-Luddite will find engaging. Of particular value and interest was Tapscott's courage to tackle the issue of the changing seats of political power. While many change writers are eager to address the issues of the economy and social divides the Information Age will produce (spending more time on the issues of who will lose rather than how many will gain by this alteration), few writers have examined the meaning of information freedom to the power distribution of the Agrarian/Industrial political structure. No longer being able to control information, the underpinnings of Rousseau's direct democracy are suddenly within reach. Reversibly, while more information and democratization is possible with the increased connectivity of information systems, threats to privacy and individuality increase also. While the Information Age connectivity allows for greater globalization, it increases the likelihood and ease of regionalization and tribalization.

For businesses interested in understanding their roles and the markets of the Information Age and for those seeking a blueprint on how to adjust to the new era, this book's title is misleading. Tapscott does a fair job at bringing together a fundamental vision of the effects and potential of globalization, but this section is quickly becoming dated and will require work in an update of the book. Still, for those who have no background in the new business paradigms this book is a good starting point.

An interesting compilation with many diverse contributors. However, most contributions come up with the same conclusions: things could be exciting or things could be terrible. Somebody just needs to sort it out. Not as powerful as `The Digital Economy' but a reasonable overview of what could be. Subjects covered include: EBCs and the nature of co-operation; GM's scenario matrix; sense and respond systems based on the availability of tacit knowledge; co-evolution within alliances; the need for alignment between values and systems; the importance of customer information in banking industry; content being customer driven in publishing; impact of internet on photography/video; as education moves out of the classroom, learning becomes modular and pulled; the evolution from passive to assertive consumer and the shift of loyalty from supplier to intermediary; how logistics will lead to the creation of virtual integration; the opportunities provided by network computers; self-organising business communities; "the network is the computer"; connection within cybercommunities; the biases of digital technology; the tension between cyberlibertarians and technocommunitarians; the impact of nonjurisdiction on governance; faith in government institutions faced with the `need' for regulation and security and finally the essential dichotomy: empowerment versus control.
