Disappointly modern.......2006-09-28

I was extremely disappointed when I finally got my hands on this book, because I was expecting another Dover-style collection of period house plans. I was unimpressed by the "Victorian-inspired" designs because they're only Victorian enough to fool the casual observer. Only the ones from Historical Replications were any good in my opinion, and there were precious few of those. All the rest were rambling modern homes with a few cornices and a porch, only the outsides referencing real Victorian architecture.

Although I am not in the market to build a house, I love Victorian architecture and house plans in general. I never get tired of looking through it and have had my copy for several years.

The introduction is very informative regarding the various styles of Victorian homes. There is an abundance of modernized Victorian plans. Unfortunately, of the 160 plans, only a handful included attic space. Authentic Victorian homes were rarely built without attics. If you are planning on building a three-story authentic Victorian home with a full basement, be advised there are only a few plans contained in this volume.

I thoroughly enjoyed this home planning and design book. Larry Garnett & Associates offers some wonderful designs in the first of this books three sections. If you are looking for "Authentic Victorian" designs this may not be the book for you. However, if you love Victorian style as I do, but prefer modern amenities this book is PERFECT.

Pricey and Padded.......1997-10-16

I was surprised to find most similar books at the local bookstore priced under $9, but if this book was truly victorian it would be worth it. But the BACK cover expands the title to "VICTORIAN AND VICTORIAN-INSPIRED FARMHOUSES". These are not the homes you'd expect to see in Cape May, NJ, but there are some floorplans I really like. But if it lacked the "victorian-inspired" and was under $9 retail, it would be much improved.

While prices for the mainstream jugs remain steady the most notable highlights in pricing~~ this year is at auction. The Clark Gable character jug recently sold for ?360, Hatless Drake realized ?185 and a Goatee Cavalier realized ?495. Pricing remains strong for the scarcer jugs.

The black and white listings at 520 pages and colour at 32 pages has remained constant with the 9th edition. However, the number of coloured illustrations has increased to over 280. Therefore, in conjuncture with the previous editions and our next two editions this will give the collector~~ an almost complete colour image of every character jug in the Doulton Collection.

As with previous years the commissioned models are playing an important role in 2005 with UKI Ceramics, Pascoe and Company, and Direct Ceramics all issuing short run, limited edition jugs. The~~ Jug of the Year for 2005 was Lord Horatio Nelson. This jug was issued commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, the most famous naval battle of the 19th century England. For Nelson fans this is a must have jug, and for the nautical collector Admiral Nelson must be high on their list of favouraties.

Even though the item description clearly states 112 pages, I apparently didn't read it closely enough & was very surprised when this "booklet" arrived!

Perhaps the information contained in this small booklet is difficult to find elsewhere, but unless you are specifically a children's nursery rhymes series collector, this book is a waste of money! Had I seen it in a bookstore, I would have passed it by unless it had been on sale for $5-$7 MAX.

If you do collect primarily nursery rhyme Royal Doulton, it "might" be worth the investment, assuming you're having difficulty finding the info in more comprehensive volumes. That is not the case for me, so I was very disappointed!

Royal Doulton Series Ware (Vol 1).......2001-11-20

Being new to the world of Royal Doulton, I am so pleased to have found this series in the Central Library in Wellington, New Zealand. However I was unable to purchase in this country and after some attempts in the UK, went exploring on the internet. I am now the proud owner of the 3 of the volumes - albeit missing Volume II (Vol.2).

Being a new collector of Doulton ware, I didn't want endless information about the product(s), just enough to have a good understanding of dates, times, periods, production,design and marks. All of this is available in these easy to read, easy to handle books. I am really thrilled with them and know that I will enjoy them for life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I sincerely hope that you enjoy this series as much I do.

Royal Doulton Series Ware Vol. 4.......2001-05-26

If you want to collect Royal Doulton series ware, I consider all four volumes in this series a "must have." I like this book because of the detailed photos -- the author goes way beyond just giving you a taste of Royal Doulton. If you only have one or two pieces of series ware, this book will help you identify them and let you see the whole spectrum of items that would complete your collection. While a terrific reference, this book is not a price guide and no prices are included. The only thing I wish this book had was more color photos. The china is so beautiful it deserves more color. That is the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars. Louise Irvine really knows her Royal Doulton - this book looks like a labor of love to me.

The 7th edition of the Royal Doulton Jugs by Jean Dale has been released. The 512 pages of introduction, listings and indices carry the most up-to-date information and pricing needed by collectors to manage their collections.

The black and white page count has remained constant with the 7th edition. This was accomplished by carrying forward from the 6th edition, the two listings per page format into the Loving Cups chapter, allowing for the new additions without expansion.

What will be a plus to the collector is that the number of 4-colour pages has doubled in the 7th edition. There are now 32 pages of colour illustrating different series, types and colourways of the toby and character jugs series.

The new issues of 2002 and 2003 have been added, with each listing providing the name of the jug, the series to which it belongs, the designer, size, dates of issue and discontinuation, handle design, variations and colourways, backstamps, and current prices for the U.K., U.S. and Canadian markets. Information on the Royal Doulton Collectors Club, Doulton Dealers, Auctions and Fairs has been updated for 2003.

In the late 1960s Royal Doulton experimented with a new body slip, English Translucent China (ETC) for jug production in lieu of earthenware (EW). One of the concepts was a better reproduction of features and detail. The new composition did not perform as hoped and was discontinued in 1971. As a result we have an approximate four year window in which you can have two compositions for the same jug. We have listed and priced all the known variations of these two compositions. Another listing is noted but not priced, that of the white jugs. Jugs that are not painted but received only a white glaze on the earthenware body. There are well over 50 different varieties of white jugs found so far.

Prices have firmed slightly since the 6th edition was released, with some of the scarce jugs inching towards new highs. The Clark Gable character jugs issued for a short time in 1984, sold on e-Bay in March 2003, in excess of $5,000 U.S.F., against a previous catalogue price of $4,800. U.S.F.

Included in the new 7th edition is a chapter on Teapots. Teapots have long been listed in the Jugs book as derivatives, such as Tony Weller, Sairey Gamp, etc., so with the advent of Royal Doulton's new release of eight new teapot designs, we created a chapter for these items and all their supporting information.

"Twilight of the Dark Master" is a near future, urban horror Manga from Digital Manga Publishing. A horrifying new drug is making its way in the streets that turns men into demon like beats complete with horns, claws, fans, and a ravenous taste for human flesh, particularly the flesh of women. Already over a dozen women, primarily prostitutes have turned up dead and horribly torn apart. A young woman named Shizuka watches her own boyfriend Eiji transform into such a creature and nearly kill her before disappearing. She suspects that Eiji is behind the murders and contracts the supernatural private investigator known as Shijyo Tsunami to find, and if necessary, kill Eiji. Shikuza tries to find Eiji herself, even working in the city's red light district where women have been disappearing from in order to find him.

Tsunami is a man to be feared on the streets...a Kaenmajin (flame devil) who has the power to command flames, even the Yakuza fears this man. As Tsunami begins to get closer to the truth while investigating the Kanemaki Group (a Yakuza organization) he finds himself challenged by a brother and sister of Chinese origin who actually delivered the Oni (demon) Eiji to the Kanemaki group and are trying to develop a half-breed, intelligent demon creature with this new drug. The Kanemaki group continues to bring in prostitutes and other women to be fed to Eiji but when he demands a Japanese girl, Shizuka now finds herself caged with the man she once loved.

"Twilight of the Dark Master" is a guttural, visceral story. Tsumami's grace in battle is contrasted by the bestiality of the creatures he faces. Saki Okuse's art is magnificent. The near future, shattered industrial landscape is a fantastic backdrop for this urban horror tale. A short feature film based on the story was released some years ago and is available on DVD but I think the Manga is actually much better.

A useful summary of alternative approaches.......2005-02-23

This book is part authored and part edited, in that many of the sections are reprinted from other sources, with authors including Peter Senge, Michael Porter, Gary Hamel and others.

It consists of six chapters, each with an original authored section, one or more reprinted articles, and case studies. It is primarily designed as an academic textbook, but some of the sections provide useful summaries for practitioners.

Those whose experience of strategic planning is limited to traditional approaches will find the summaries of alternative approaches and their application useful and enlightening. Those who are familiar with the modern range of approaches may find the book provides a useful overview of alternative approaches to strategy and why some work better than others, and also some useful tools. As with all books of this kind, one is left to wonder whether the success of strategies outlined in the case studies is the result of superior technique or analysis, or simply a happy accident, and what lessons can be learned from the cases by those faced with developing a strategy for their own business.

One notable lack is the absence of any discussion of the role of scenarios in the development of strategies.

Railroads and Clearcuts.......2006-03-11

I bought this book looking for a history of the Northern Pacific, and was somewhat disappointed. To be sure there is the history of the railraod and the land grant that created it, but it is more of a polemic on the ecological impact of the land grant.

The authors want more to get congress to overturn the land grant issue rather than explain the history of the railraod and the affect the land grant had on the area. Even if they wanted to get their environmental message across, doing so with solid history and empirical data would have been much more effective. Instead, what they produced is more of a rant about the injustice of it all.

Again, there have to be better histories of the NP out there, this book isn't it.
