What a bizarre little book. I happened upon it online, and thought it would be adorable. It isn't adorable...Just perplexing. Seems the author used photoshop to just cut and paste pictures of her dachshunds into doorways of buildings. That's it. Am I missing something? Will the sequel be Dachshunds in windows?

In Bad Language, Naked Ladies, and Other Threats to the Nation, Anne Rubenstein examines how comic booksâwhich were overwhelmingly popular but extremely controversial in post-revolutionary Mexicoâplayed an important role in the development of a stable, legitimate state. Studying the relationship of the Mexican state to its civil society from the 1930s to the 1970s through comic books and their producers, readers, and censors, Rubenstein shows how these thrilling tales of adventureâand the debates over themâreveal much about Mexico’s cultural nationalism and government attempts to direct, if not control, social change.
Since their first appearance in 1934, comic books enjoyed wide readership, often serving as a practical guide to life in booming new cities. Conservative protest against the so-called immorality of these publications, of mass media generally, and of Mexican modernity itself, however, led the Mexican government to establish a censorship office that, while having little impact on the content of comic books, succeeded in directing conservative ire away from government policies and toward the Mexican media. Bad Language, Naked Ladies, and Other Threats to the Nation examines the complex dynamics of the politics of censorship occasioned by Mexican comic books, including the conservative political campaigns against them, government and industrial responses to such campaigns, and the publishers’ championing of Mexican nationalism and their efforts to preserve their publishing empires through informal influence over government policies. Rubenstein’s analysis suggests a new Mexican history after the revolution, one in which negotiation over cultural questions replaced open conflict and mass-media narrative helped ensure political stability.
This book will engage readers with an interest in Mexican history, Latin American studies, cultural studies, and popular culture.

What exactly is so Good about this book?.......2007-08-05
This book comes heavily blurbed and much recommended above. But why? Basically Rubenstein has covered all the bases both giving a brief overview Mexican comics and also showing how they were part of an ongoing debate about the nature of Mexican society and culture.

Cultural studies have opened new horizons to researchers in the Humanities, but not every person working the field has offered a more comprehensive, transcultural, multidisciplinary and worthwhile contribution to knowledge. Prof. Anne Rubenstein has. Her latest eye opener (Bad language, naked ladies and other threats to the Nation...) achieves the double goal of making a reasonable point and supporting it with sound, real information, obtained from actual sources --it is easy to tell that she has lived in Mexico, and actually read hundreds of illustrated magazines, before writing her book. I may not agree with her conclusions totally, but I wholeheartedly support every page of evidence she presents. My warmest regards to her --¡Felicitaciones por su trabajo!--, and to every reader who shares in her joyful and amazing quest for truth: The making and remaking of PostRevolutionary Mexico through media, are well worth the reading!
Humorous, cultural insights from the world of academia!.......1999-05-28
Prof. Rubenstein is one to watch! This book is interesting on a number of levels and should be required reading for students and professors in the area of political science, multiculturalism, and anyone interested in the recent or historical blending of pop culture and politics.

Not that hot.......2006-07-08
could be a fairly good "first draft" of a book, but clearly not ready for publication. Many of the primary Oracle Forms features are not discussed at all and what is is done in a very confusing fashion. The entire book appears to be straight out of a word processor.
For the money, a user would be far better off referring to the on-line documentation that comes with forms.
Can't be done.......2006-04-14
In order to use the course (and the prerequisite courses) you need to download tons of Oracle software on a one-month trial license or spend a couple of thousand dollars. If you also have a job, this gives insuficicient time to do the course.
Great for introducting students to Oracle Forms.......2004-12-29
I work in a position where I train professional programmers for our client. Most of our programmers are transferring from Legacy systems to our new Oracle system. We have started using this book as an alternative to more expensive classroom/online training and have found it very useful. The chapters are small enough to do in a sitting and the exercises help reinforce what was learned in the chapter. The current users are programmers who have been doing mainframe programming for 10-20 years and are just now transitioning to Windows programming. I'm amazed at the progress they are making through the use of this book.
All of the data and sample forms are available online at a website listed in the books introduction. It's designed to be run on a personal installation of Oracle DB, but I was able to run the provided data creation scripts in our enterprise installation without issue. I used our developement environment and created the data without any modifications to the scripts and no DBA security rights (other than the right to create new tables). Took about 5 minutes of setup and then all my students were able to work with it under their normal developer rights.
There is only one downside I've found, and that's the binding. For a book that's designed to be read while doing exercises on the computer, it should have a spiral bound rather than normal book binding. The book does not want to stay open, the margins are too close to the binding, and after several times of forcing it open the bindings are wearing very badly after just a few months. Some copies even have pages starting to fall out. It's a minor thing in comparison to the content, but is awfully frustrating for my students.
In summary, we've looked at countless resources and have found this to be one of the best (cost vs. effectiveness) training tools for our programmers.
Horrible layout.......2004-07-12
While this book is good for learning Oracle Forms 6i, and allows you to learn in the step-by-step as advertised, the layout of this book is horrendous. The chapters are literally 2-3 pages long. Then there are 3 pages of questions, followed by 20 pages of answers and their explanations. As another reviewer said, the questions asked are not meant to be known by the reader. Instead it's a quick way to make a point about what should be known, and then it's answered for you later. What I hate and got more and more frustrated by with each passing chapter, is that while the answers section of each chapter relist the question, it does not relist the steps you're supposed to do between each question. So while it would be nice to just skip the questions and go to the answers where the questions are anyway, you're constantly flipping back and forth to know what to do next. It's good to learn Forms 6i, but be warned that you're going to be frustrated by the format/layout.

I like this book. This book gives you a lot of execises and examples, which can be download on line. Just like the book's name Interactive Workbook. I think it is helpful.

As globalization links economies, the value of a country's irrigation water is becoming increasingly sensitive to competitive forces in world markets. Water policy at the national and regional levels will need to accommodate these forces, or water is likely to become undervalued. The inefficient use of this resource will lessen a country's comparative advantage in world markets and slow a country's transition to higher incomes, particularly in rural households.
While professionals widely agree on what constitutes sound water resources management, they have not reached a consensus about the best ways of implementing policies in this sector. Policymakers have considered pricing water -- a debated intervention -- in many variations. Setting the price "right,"some say, may guide different types of users in efficient water use by sending a signal about the value of this resource. Aside from efficiency, itself an important policy objective, equity, accessibility, and implementation costs associated with the right pricing must be considered.
Focusing on the examples of China, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, and TurkeyPricing Irrigation Water provides a clear methodology for studying farm-level demand for irrigation water. This book is the first to link the macroeconomics of policies affecting trade to the microeconomics of water demand for irrigation and, in the case of Morocco, to link these forces to the creation of water user-rights market. This type of market reform, the contributors argue, will result in growing economic benefits to both rural and urban households.
