If you love photography or are a serious photgrapher - this book is a must. A very insightful book on photography. Coleman is at his best. You don't have to agree with him on every point, but he entices you to condsider the other side.

Book Description

Richard Longstreth is one of the few historians to focus on ordinary commercial buildings--buildings usually associated with commercial builders and real estate developers rather than architects and thus generally overlooked by historians of "high" architecture.

Here Longstreth explores the early development of two kinds of retail space that have become ubiquitous in the United States in the second half of the twentieth century. One, external, is devoted to the circulation and parking of automobiles on retail premises. Longstreth analyzes the origins of this development in the 1910s and 1920s, with the super service station and then the drive-in market. The other type of space, internal, was introduced soon thereafter with the single-story supermarket. The most innovative aspect of the supermarket was how its interior was designed for high-volume turnover of a large selection of goods with a minimum of staff assistance. Longstreth focuses on Los Angeles, the principal center for the development of both kinds of space, during the period from the mid-1910s to the early 1940s. This richly illustrated study integrates architectural, cultural, economic, and urban factors to describe the evolution of retailing and how it has affected the urban landscape.

A fascintating look at the cultural history of Los Angeles and the way in which commercial spaces played a part in developing it. A must for anyone that's seriously interested in more than the usual history lesson on Tinsletown. Actually, more than simply Los Angeles, this book gives clues as to how the development of commericial spaces that we've come to take for granted have influenced cultural history across the entire nation, with Los Angeles leading the way in innovation.

Excellent book.......1999-09-02

This International Security reader is a great collection of the recent work in the realist tradition in International Relations. Here you can read the "classic" authors (like Waltz and Walt) and the "new generation" (Schweller - excellent - and Zakaria). The introduction, written by the editors of the volume, is wonderful: it really "maps" realism and its authors. There is also two essays by John Mearsheimer, the "hardcore" realist and his gloomy "Back to the Future" article. Great book and certainly worth the money. This is the best book in the "International Security" readers series.

The editors put together an impressive pedigree of authors of the book's chapters. Foremost amongst these is Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations. He discusses how modern states still have a place in this era of increasing globalisation. Then Nobelist Amartya Sen asks how to judge its successes and failures. He suggests that it has much to offer. But also cautions that multinationals often prefer working in autocracies than in free wheeling democracies. And globalisation tends to deal in spreading capitalism rather than democracy.

Historian Samuel Huntington, philosopher Hans Kung and many others also give variant takes. More optimistic, though with qualifications.

You can ponder the essays as posing more thoughtful and measured views than many shrill screeds on the subject.

Best Anthology for College Writers.......2000-09-15

This is the kind of reader desparately needed in the undergrad university writing class. It is savvy, hip, and knowledgeable. It is funny, with a few sharp, political cartoons slipped in for inspiration. Any university professor of writing should jump on this one immediately. It will certainly take the place of the fuddy-duddy, over-priced dullsville reader you have been using. The editors have taken special care to make certain each essay carries social awareness and creative energy. These are the topics which will provoke a class into a free-flowing conversational session. Yes, it is a provocative reader by a great little press that will not cost an arm and a leg. Today, the liberal arts classroom gets a bashing from corporate influences which would kind of like to take over the universities and influence the way classes are taught. This is a reader that throws a few punches back, and it hits right on target. So if you are a college student, suggest this reader to your prof. If you are a professor, make sure your next semester students get the opportunity to read and respond to these knock-out pieces of poignant writing.
