5 out of 5 stars Norbury has a carving system that actually works!.......2005-01-04

My husband is a woodcarver and is pretty darn good at it, with one exception --the human face. He carved a clown, an indian and a man's head, a Roman and Don Quixote and he was not satisified with any of those faces. Then he got his hands on this book. When he finished the bust of the female, I was startled to see just how good a carving it was. Now I'm afraid that he's decided that his problem was that he had not carved women's heads. He's looking around for a camera and a model to photograph from a multitude of angles, just like Norbury showed him how to do in this book. I'm just not too sure how far I want him to go with this new found talent....

5 out of 5 stars Top of the line book.......2004-11-01

This is the best book I've seen about carving the female bust. Norbury works from photographs and goes into great detail about using photos to make the pattern for the bust of choice.

His directions are excellent, especially for determining the removal of unwanted stock. This could almost be considered a textbook.

I almost bought this book hoping it would give me the necessary missing elements for my smaller faces .I got to preview it at a woodworking show .Glad I did because ,though it is great for an individual to learn to do a mouth ,nose, eyes ect. it is somewhat lacking in showing the technique and how to put it all together .A great book for someone needing to know how to go about doing the individual elements of the face but left me feeling like I needed much more than there was offered here .

          Book Description

          * Compelling firsthand account of the dilemmas faced by relief workers

          * Reflects the author's experience of the catastrophies in Kosovo, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan

Famine and war evoke strong emotional reactions of pity and concern in the onlooker. For most of us there is a limited amount that we are prepared or able to do, but relief workers have to convert such natural emotional responses into practical action while addressing the stark dilemmas that go hand-in-hand with humanitarian intervention.

So why do they get involved? Are aid workers motivated purely by altruistic concern, or is it a more complex mixture involving the power they experience and the attention they receive?

In this new paperback edition of "The Selfish Altruist", Tony Vaux brings over 20 years' experience as one of Oxfam's leading emergency program coordinators to a far-reaching and unflinching account of the conflicts between subjective impulses and objective judgment. Describing and analyzing some of the most traumatic crisis situations of the last two decades, he helps us to understand what it takes to be an aid worker and how important humanitarian action is today.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why do we do it?.......2006-07-13

One of Vaux's clear intentions when constructing the questions throughout this work is achieving a personal catharsis. The motivations and decision making apparatus of himself and the aid community come under mercilessly objective evaluation. The graphic nature of the situations may tempt the reader to give in to the hoplessness that front line aid workers experience, though dwelling on the situations descibed in this book would be, in my opinion, missing the point. The point is understanding why we do the things that we do. Can an aid provider ( NGO ) overlook causality and bring aid to the person in need? Will attempts to affect causality do more harm than good? Do underlying motivations exist that influence the manner in which aid is provided? The answers to these questions are not simple or finite.

This book forced me to be introspective in ways that few others have. If you want a true lesson in disciplining your objectivity it's definitely worth the time.

          5 out of 5 stars self-recognition.......2002-02-06

Tony Vaux took a job that landed him in Kosovo, Ethiopia, Sudan, Mozambique, Afghanistan, Somalia, Bosnia, Azerbaijan and Rwanda. He worked for Oxfam, one of the world's premier development and relief organizations. In his work, he helped some of the poorest and hungriest people on this planet. He believed his work vital, but he observed and raised questions. He saw that what needed to be done frequently did not get done. Vaux and his associates, over stressed and under funded, decided sometimes who would live and who would not. Food and medical aid became entangled with politics and military action. Many of the people helped were less than innocent and sometimes guilty of horrific crimes. Helping the vulnerable, the most laudable of tasks, he found, can itself be corrupting.

What saves this book from becoming another "realist" tome about how awful and hopeless we humans are, is Vaux's willingness to probe his own psyche as well as others'. We're often able to make ourselves quite comfortable with the assessment that the human race is, as Vaux states, "a species of exceptional brutality and cruelty" (page iv). We object only when the accusation is made against ourselves. If our accuser presses on and places before us our own behavior, we may admit that, yes, sometimes we have, under certain circumstances, acted brutally. But, we hasten to explain: circumstances forced us to act so. We had our reasons. They made us do it. It's a cruel world. Vaux rejects this sophistry. He admits, "the possibility that I too could be a killer." (184) By "killer" he does not mean that he could serve in a UN peacekeeping force. He means he is fully capable of having been on the wrong side in Somalia, Bosnia or Rwanda.

From this non-privileged position, Vaux recounts debates among Oxfam staff about the identity of the organization: will it aim to promote development or be an emergency relief action? Should Oxfam deliver aid to a society that oppresses women to the point that women will not benefit from the aid - or should the organization try to save as many lives as possible, even if most of them will be male? Will accepting help from one side in a conflict - in this case trucks with armed soldiers to deliver food - compromise Oxfam's neutrality and its future effectiveness?

It is also from this position that he raises his most fundamental issue. Vaux points out that aid workers are in positions of power and that power corrupts. Aid organizations and workers develop interests, organizational and personal, in seeing that acts are done in a certain way and that they receive credit. "Saving lives," he writes, "can be intoxicating, especially when people are weak and vulnerable." (94) "The motive of pity so easily interacts with the motive for cruelty, and the desire to help so easily becomes the desire for power. .... Managers in the `disaster relief industry', like those in charge of homes for children or the elderly, have the opportunity to abuse power because they are dealing with vulnerable people." (95) Pity becomes contempt.

But, Vaux argues, "Self-knowledge is the prerequisite of humanity." (72) "(T)o be happy requires a(n) ... abandonment of self - an ability to rejoice in other's success and in the formation of their altruism." (180) As another person has pointed out, aid may be something done to people. Better is to do something for people. But the best is to do something with people. Only the worker who has abandoned "self" is able to work with people.

I'm working on my 6th year as a real estate agent and out of all the business books that I've read this one really hits the nail on the head! I started reading the book about 3 weeks ago and it already has had an effect on my business. I've been on 4 CMA presentations and came out with 4 Listings on the same day that I met with the prospects. This book gives samples of dialogues with sellers and buyers, time management advice, goal setting, servicing listings, seperating the serious buyers from the not so serious, and at the same time looking out for your clients best interest. You must read this book to succeed!

With full coverage of marketing, creative problem-solving, negotiation, and more, this book features everything you need to succeed in today's ever-changing market such as: all new niche marketing concepts for the electronic age, how to use the Internet to create more intimacy with hot prospects, and never-before-revealed secrets on how to eliminate the unworthy competition at every listing presentation.

4 out of 5 stars Generally solid material, but not what you expect.......2001-03-09

When you purchase a book that boldly pronounces: "DOUBLE YOUR INCOME IN REAL ESTATE" you probably think it's about doubling your income, right? Not exactly, at least, not with this book. Danielle Kennedy gets us started lethargically and only begins to get into some of the "meat and potatoes" the last half of the book.

We begin with a lengthy chapter about tapping into your goals, desires, and will power, followed by another tedious chapter about your life and money, followed by still another chapter on the history of homeownership. By the fourth chapter, readers clamoring to double their incomes are asked to wait a while longer while Ms. Kennedy primarily addresses brokers and owners for another sixty pages. Finally, by chapter five, nearly halfway through the text, we begin to hear what the title told us we would.

To Ms. Kennedy's credit, most of what she has to say is valuable and worthwhile. If you can buckle down and actually get through the 120 pages of preliminary info, you will have a nice idea about your goals, your money, your health, and the history of real estate. After that, her techniques, while generally of the tried-and-true book of tricks, are nonetheless important. She does a nice job of explaining them consisely and offering some new ideas.

Ms. Kennedy also has a lot to say about diet and exercise, as well as how to motivate fellow salespeople. Some of this comes off as "motherly" and even a bit soft-sounding. It leaves you wondering if she truly has both feet set in the real world, or rather prefers to live in an idealized pseudo-reality. It would be nice if Ms. Kennedy's "model office" existed anywhere in real life.

The sad part is, the author has abandoned real estate sales for (perhaps?) the more lucrative area of writing books and speaking publically. I personally do not like to read books from individuals who abandoned their sales careers, but this should not deter you from picking up her book. To her credit, she does not come off as some kind of get-rich-quick guru and her advice is sound and generally timeless.

For a great back to basics book with a catchy (but not necessarily 100% accurate) title, consider this as a worthwhile read.

3 out of 5 stars Food For Thought.......1998-12-17

A well written and practical book for the real estate practioner. Kennedy in her usual style approaches her subject material in a straight forward and common sense manner. Her advice and insight clearly stems from her years of experience as a realtor in the trenches. I rate this book as a must read for anyone wanting to enhance or increase their income with real estate sales while seeking to obtain a more balanced lifestyle. J.L. Wall, Knoxville, Tennessee
