2 out of 5 stars Fashion Jewelry to Make Yourself.......2005-09-08

While Fashion Jewelry has interesting examples for making handsome and contemporary objects -- mostly necklaces -- the translation is terrible. Just because someone has the ability to make a literal translation doesn't mean they are competent to deal with even this minimally specialist technique and subject.

3 out of 5 stars Pictures, Yes! Text, huh?.......2001-03-22

Renate Bosshart wrote a great book--the jewelry shown is beautifully designed, with varied and interesting techniques. The pieces are shown as full-page, 4-color photographs. So why does "Fashion Jewelry To Make Yourself" get only three stars? Because the title is misleading and the translation is baffling.

Unless you are a jeweler already, you can't make the pieces shown in the book. The materials list that starts the book is vague and poorly illustrated. The photograph of various pliers is too dark and too small to see the difference between a round-nose and chain-nose pliers, and the names aren't used anyway. You are told you will need "various lengths and thicknesses" of "wires and threads." The diagrams scattered throughout the book are not consistent. Some are clear, others don't show enough separate steps.

But the translation is the worst flaw in this otherwise lovely book. The translator is obviously not a jeweler and not familiar with the tools of the trade. But don't let this discourage you. The 125-page book has color plates on almost every page, each with a great idea. No shortage of inspiration and motivation here. You need a good sense of humor and persistence to work through some of the text, but it's worth it.

For example, it doesn't take too much imagination to figure out that "cloth bands" means ribbon, and that the German word for "bead" and "pearl" is the same. From context, you can figure out that "press-molded beads" and "callottes" are crimps that you attach with "pliers with holes." More baffling is the line, "Into the ring with a thorn, which can be hooked easily into a half-creole, you can glue a pearl. . ."

I've paid as much for books without such gorgeous pictures. When I'm stuck in a deisgning rut, paging through this book is a certain cure.

          4 out of 5 stars Fashion Jewelry.......2000-04-22

Fashion Jewelry was originally published in Germany as Modischer Schmuck zum Selbermachen, which gives you the flavor of this book. It is full of intriguing new ways to fasten jewelry. The author has a ready resource of fantastic materials from Gablonz Glass World in the Czech Republic. Certainly, after looking at the beads and findings, you begin to wish Gablonz was as near as Houston.

One of the simplest, but very effective methods of fastening E-beads together is with jump rings. The effect is delicate, but sturdy. This method can be used for a bracelet or necklace.

Another striking way to use beads is to put beads of different shapes on headpin, then loop the end of the headpin to make a charm. Alternate stringing a bead directly on wire with five of your charms. This gives the necklace a loose, swingy effect.

Many of the materials in Renate's book are unique to Europe, but don't let that discourage you. I caught myself thinking that I could make similar jewelry elements using polymer clay, although I admit to a sudden urge to visit Gablonz.

              Book Description

While the American agricultural and food systems follow a decades-old path of industrialization and globalization, a counter trend has appeared toward localizing some agricultural and food production. Thomas A. Lyson, a scholar-practitioner in the field of community-based food systems, calls this rebirth of locally based agriculture and food production civic agriculture because these activities are tightly linked to a community's social and economic development. Civic agriculture embraces innovative ways to produce, process, and distribute food, and it represents a sustainable alternative to the socially, economically, and environmentally destructive practices associated with conventional large-scale agriculture. Farmers' markets, community gardens, and community-supported agriculture are all forms of civic agriculture.

Lyson describes how, in the course of a hundred years, a small-scale, diversified system of farming became an industrialized system of production and also how this industrialized system has gone global. He argues that farming in the United States was modernized by employing the same techniques and strategies that transformed the manufacturing sector from a system of craft production to one of mass production. Viewing agriculture as just another industrial sector led to transformations in both the production and the processing of food. As small farmers and food processors were forced to expand, merge with larger operations, or go out of business, they became increasingly disconnected from the surrounding communities. Lyson enumerates the shortcomings of the current agriculture and food systems as they relate to social, economic, and environmental sustainability. He then introduces the concept of community problem solving and offers empirical evidence and concrete examples to show that a re-localization of the food production system is underway.

              Customer Reviews:

              2 out of 5 stars Questionable value.......2007-03-28

I purchased this book based on the other reviews but was disappointed. While it does give information based on feedback from actual franchisee, I question the value because of the small sample size of many of the reviews. Do you really want to base a buying decision based on responses of 16 out of a total of 4500 franchisees? I personally won't put much faith on rankings with such a small sample size. However, some of the smaller franchises had a much better response rate which could provide good insight.

I also would have like to see some hard income numbers. The survey asked if they were making what they expected or more or less. This is somewhat worthless without knowing how realistic their expectation were.

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource tool.......2007-01-30

This book is great for anyone who wants to get into a franchise or to know more about franchisees. Its definitely open my eyes about how the franchisees operates and whats the pro's and con's.

5 out of 5 stars A great read and invaluable aid.......2006-04-29

I've done quite a bit of research on franchises and there are some great books available, but The Franchise Ratings Guide offers unique insights I haven't seen anywhere else. It's the only book I've found that provides feedback from actual franchise owners on questions such as work hours, ease of communications with franchisors and other franchisees, training, income, grievance solving, royalty, stress levels and the ultimate question of whether or not owners would make the decision to buy their particular franchise again. The book also offers best/worst lists as well as detailed responses broken down by the 216 franchises. There's also franchise specific contact, term and fee details. Overall, the text is concise and informative, and should not to be neglected. Chapter three is a must read!

It's great to get real world perspective from those who actually bought and own a particular franchise. Whether you're trying to decide if franchise ownership is right for you or make the difficult decision of which franchise to move ahead with, you owe it to yourself to get this book. I've bought two copies (one for me and one for a potential partner)
Highly recommended for anyone considering investing in a franchise business!

2 out of 5 stars Did the best with what they got.......2001-12-06

Basically youll get very little information about owning a franchise. Some decent figures are in there (but I am sure could be found elsewhere on the internet).

What you will get is some type of financial statements for franchises that provide them. There is nothing special in this book! Most franchises do not provide financial information, so most of the franchises in here are no name franchises you probably haven't heard of (some are recognizable though).

Also they do not all follow the same format. Looks like the author took the information the franchiser sent and just reprinted it. You will not necessarly find cash flow in all of them. Some may just show expenses, etc.

Overall I was disappointed. All the information in this book could be obtained directly from the franchiser. For example if your interested in buying a dairy queen and dairy queen wont give you any financial information, dont expect this book to have it.

I found the "How to buy a good business at a great price" book (...) much more valuable. (...)

2 out of 5 stars Too Superficial to be beneficial.......2001-07-17

This book can either be good or very bad depending upon what you want out of it.

If you are looking for a book to help you strategically help you decide upon which franchise that would be most suitable and profitable for you, then skip this one.

This book will best serve those people who are at the very beginning of thinking about openning up a franchise. In fact, those people may even be disappointed as well.

This book gives a very quick synopsis on the different franchises available. There is very little differentiation between the different franchising, with the exception of product type. For example, you can examine the different pizza franchises, but don't get enough information about which franchises are best.

So, if you are looking for just a few thumbnail sketches at the highest level, then you will probably enjoy this book. If you are looking for something more, then keep looking.

I found this book to be a good tool to have once you have found the businesses you want to investigate. The challenge is narrowing the list.

I didn't want to stand behind a counter making sandwiches(spent too long in corporate America for that), but beyond that I didn't know what else to narrow the list on. I found some help and between this book, others books and the advisor I found I was able to evalaute the market. Some investigation, and Google, led me to George Knauf and together we talked about companies, my goals and what is in the book.

Use all the tools available to you. I found the book to be a somewhat worthwhile investment and the advice to be worth a great deal, though somehow it din't cost me anything.

              1 out of 5 stars A Big Disapointment.......2003-03-08

This book is a big disapointment. The begining chapters have some useful information, but much of it can easily be found on the web. The 220 franchises they list have no supporting information on why they're the best. The information they provide seem like condensed versions of the franchisor's flyers.

4 out of 5 stars Good Council - Helpful Industry Overview.......2002-06-07

The first section of the book provides good basic council if you are early in the process. The majority of the book lists franchise opportunities by category. This may be very helpful in narrowing down what might be appealing based on individual preferences.

              1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2001-01-16

I was hopping to get a book containing information on 220 franchises that had been rated "best" by some criteria. This book does not attempt to do that. It gives pretty good information on 220 franchises, but it makes no claim that they are best by any standard.

In the introduction to the information on the 220 franchises, the book states the franchises "..represent a wide variety of franchise opportunities. Chosen to provide a sampling of the many types of franchising opportunities available...".

This is not what the title leades the buyer to expect and is not what I wanted to buy.

2 out of 5 stars Not so informative.......2006-07-13

Very, Very, basic book. I was looking for something that could provide some more informative feedback on how to pick a franchise. This book was extremely basic. Most of the book was very elementary business, such as research your franchise, don't get talked into a bad deal by a salesman, etc.

It did help outline the basic process, but didn't provide any insight to actually picking a franchise.
