    Book Description

            Book Description

The Rohner harbor office building in Fussach, designed by B&E Baumschlager-Eberle is a fascinating steel, glass, and concrete configuration that appears to float in mid-air, echoing the form of a space capsule or a bird standing on one leg. Awkwardly elegant, the precisely designed building is composed of an eight-meter-long container-shaped shell of concrete that connects with the ground below by only a single slim footing. The interior of the shell is lined with larchwood paneling, creating an inner tension that dissolves at both ends of the building as it opens out into floor-to-ceiling glass windows that face Lake Constance at one end and the inland countryside at the other. This avian, spaceship-like building is, nevertheless, characterized by the very earthly features of an open structure, clear lines, and uncompromising simplicity. First in the Archive Kunst Architectur series, this book features photographs by Eduard Hueber as well as plans and drawings by the distinguished Baumschlager-Eberle team.

                Book Description

_____________________________________________________

A quick flip through this colorful book hints at easy, lighthearted projects suitable for beginners. To some extent this is true, but newcomers beware: the extremely awkward translation of the original Italian text may be confusing to those not already familiar with terms common to the subject. Throughout, polymer clay itself is called resin and canes are referred to as murrhines. Purpurin at first mention remains a complete mystery until a later illustration reveals it to be fine glitter. Measurements are given only in metric and oven temperatures only in Celsius. Although every package of polymer clay comes with manufacturer's recommendations for baking, having the Fahrenheit number in the text would have been helpful, as would at least minimal attention to smoothing the flow of this tortured English-language version. In introducing a particular cane, for instance (a cane generally known as the lace cane but which she instead calls bee's nest), the author utters this grievous mouthful: "Perhaps for this project I'll ask you to add a touch of the cook or the housewife that's in you to wrap the infantile snake like a lasagna."

Two things save this unfortunate situation and actually make this troubled volume worthwhile. First, the excellent, extensive step-by-step photos render the written directions very nearly unnecessary. Second, the author's whimsical sense of design and nice way with color result in charming necklaces, frames, tableware, buttons, desk accessories, and other items bedecked with simple, appealing patterns. She touches upon a few imitative techniques (jade, coral, marble, mosaic, mokume gane), but her real forte is creating canes that feature bold geometrics, celestial motifs, fish, snails, butterflies, ladybugs, various types of flowers, and faces. Despite its shortcomings, the book's strength makes one wish all the more that some attention had been paid to editing the text. --Amy Handy

                      Book Description

Take it in your hand, roll it into a log, cut it, shape it, and bake it in a regular oven--that's how simple working with polymer clay can be. Yet with this marvelous and versatile material you can make "jade" necklaces, bright and pretty Christmas ornaments, handles for a coordinated set of flatware, marbled surfaces, vases, and more. Filled with hundreds of close-up pictures and instructions that start right at the very beginning with the basics of modeling and heating the clay safely, this technique-and-project packed manual shows how to form different patterns (including dots, stripes, interweaving, and twirls) and use these designs to fashion everything from jewelry to practical housewares to stunning decorative items. Nothing could be easier or more fun.

Nothing new, and the techniques and samples presented were amateurish at best. I only wasted 10 dollars and I can get at least half of this back on eBay.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2002-02-11

This book has many things to be desire. One of the things I noticed on each page was the shoddy workmanship. Terms are not good english translation.

2 out of 5 stars Beware if you are completely new to Polymer Clay!.......2001-06-13

While the projects and pictures presented here are worth a look, and are good for beginners, there is an extremely important point worth mentioning. It's something that knocks the book down several pegs, in my opinion.

In the move from Italian to English, there are several examples of badly-translated words and/or phrases. If this were an intermediate or advanced book, it wouldn't be such a big deal, as anyone who has worked with Polymer Clay for a while already knows the correct terminology for many of the tools and supplies needed. However, as this is a beginner's manual, it is very important that the language be correct. If a newbie reads that s/he needs to buy "resin pastes" to make a "murrhine," or "purpurin" and "metal lamina" to achieve different surface effects, that person may spend hours scouring a craft store for supplies that don't go by that name in the U.S. These terms refer to "polymer clay," "canes," "glitter," and "metal leaf," by the way.

It may seem nit-picky, but I think it's important to use the right terminology with beginners so as to reduce the frustration level. At the very LEAST, they should have been able to translate "polymer clay" correctly - it's the subject of the book!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and useful.......2000-09-10

I bought this book last year on a trip to Europe, and I took it to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I live and where I work with polymer clay from a long time. Some craft lover friends saw it, appreciated it, learned a lot from it, and wanted it so much that we had to order half a dozen copies of the book from Italy. Now, all of them are fascinated by the easy way instructions are presented and by the variety of projects. I'm glad to know this book is now translated to English and it's available from eveywhere. I highly recommend it to people who love art and like working with their hands, and to people who think they don't like working with their hands too.

5 out of 5 stars Polymer Clay Made Easy!.......2000-09-08

Wonderful Italian Manual but American Style! Technique, tools & materials fully detailed. Easy step-to-step instructions thoroughly explained and supported by plenty of pictures. Huge variety of projects and ideas. The writer takes you by hand and guides you up to the end of each project. Amazing! Even if you have no idea what Polymer Clay is you can start your first project right away.

                          Book Description

Analyzing how price expectations are formed is essential since the dynamics of market prices are mainly driven by the agent's belief concerning the future values of prices and by the uncertainty characterizing these values. This is a difficult task since prices are highly volatile in most markets and expectational behavior is heterogeneous and unstable.

This volume discusses the concept of rationality of expectations both from a theoretical and an empirical point of view, and both at an individual and collective level. Concerning the first aspect, the book focuses on how agents collect and process information and how market opinion is formed. Concerning the second aspect, the book presents studies based on individual price expectations and on the consensus revealed by survey data. To appreciate the degree of generality of expectational behavior, the contributors analyze price expectations in a variety of markets, periods and countries. Great attention is paid to financial markets which have represented the main field of analysis of expectations over the last ten years.

                              4 out of 5 stars Streetsmart.......2007-09-27

This is a good overview and collection of information for those considering China as a place to do business. Much of the information is "common sense," but this is a commodity that seems to be in short supply among certain businessfolks, as the rivers of red ink surging over past years well attest. Readers would be well advised to take the book seriously. The ideas and counsel seem prosaic and mundane, but they are very much on target. Companies wishing to take the plunge into doing business in China in the short term would be well advised to buy and read a copy of this book and to donate the rest of their proposed investment to a charity. Read and heed before you jump and dump a pile of money. The advice is good. Bears following closely. If you're othewise inclined, don't waste the money on the book. Hire consultant instead. Pray the consultant's read the book and taken it seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Strategically, the best book in the market!.......2007-08-23

While I have read a number of books describing strategies with respect to working with Chinese, China Streetsmart is the only book used as a manual by our Company's board of directors. For example, Mr. Chan's section, dealing with the four-question method of qualifying and quantifying information relative to China, has been formally adopted as our protocol in filtering any and all intelligence received from the field.

5 out of 5 stars By Far the most practical and insightful book on doing business in China .......2007-03-19

Having read several books on starting and doing business in China, I can honestly say that this one is the best. None combine both the theoretical / strategic with the emperical, hands-on practical insight and experience provided by the author. While tailored for the individual or organization tasked with starting a new China venture, I found that the examples and prescriptions could be applied to nearly any functional role or domain. Hands down the best China business book.

5 out of 5 stars The most valuable China Guide for managers.......2007-03-16

As an sales and marketing director with experience in setting up and managing FMCG businesses in some different countries, this book is my essential guide for entering the chinese market:
1)due to the fact, that it combines the strategical dimension of setting up new business together with a list of Do's and Don'ts when entering this very challenging market
2)it reminds us, that all business has an economical as well as a people dimension. This human / cultural side of the business is very well explained based on personal experience of a lot of chinese and foreign managers as well as on the broad and hands on experience of the autor himself.
                              3) This book shows you a lot of different cases among different industries, which helps you to find out, which case could be most similar to your own business and which experience I could learn and take advantage of.

My conclusion: if you are setting up a new business, looking for opportunities in the chinese market place and like to avoid the most common mistakes other people have already made thousand of times, this book is the back-to-basics manifesto for you!!

3 out of 5 stars A book of useful information but lacking a central theme.......2006-11-05

To be sure, this book contains a lot of useful information about the China business environment. And the author usefully discusses how to do business in China through analysis and examples.

But the fatal problem of this book is that it lacks a central theme. Nowhere can this be more clearly seen than in the following concluding statement from the Introduction:

"The biggest secret of doing business in China is - there is no secret; it is just plain common sense."

If this were true, why bother about reading this book or even writing it?

If you are looking for the best guide to doing business in China, I recommend Dr Wei Wang's The China Executive: Marrying Western and Chinese Strengths to Generate Profitability from Your Investment in China.

I can tell you that The China Executive is guiding our company to turn around some of the poorly-performed investments in China.
