    Book Description

In this innovative account of the urbanization of nature in New York City, Matthew Gandy explores how the raw materials of nature have been reworked to produce a "metropolitan nature" distinct from the forms of nature experienced by early settlers. The book traces five broad developments: the expansion and redefinition of public space, the construction of landscaped highways, the creation of a modern water supply system, the radical environmental politics of the barrio in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the contemporary politics of the environmental justice movement.

Drawing on political economy, environmental studies, social theory, cultural theory, and architecture, Gandy shows how New York’s environmental history is bound up not only with the upstate landscapes that stretch beyond the city’s political boundaries but also with more distant places that reflect the nation’s colonial and imperial legacies. Using the shifting meaning of nature under urbanization as a framework, he looks at how modern nature has been produced through interrelated transformations ranging from new water technologies to changing fashions in landscape design. Throughout, he considers the economic and ideological forces that underlie phenomena as diverse as the location of parks and the social stigma of dirty neighborhoods.

4 out of 5 stars Very Beginnings for very beginners.......2000-09-27

This book helped me know what I needed to get started. I like his use of classics in pastel to illustrate the beauty and range of the medium. Excellent tips for beginners from what you need, to creating your own paper for pastel work. It also give good information on how to decide what type of pastels to use - by showing different types in action.

                                Book Description

Mountain Light is the best-selling classic that captures the unique artistic vision of Galen Rowell, one of the world's most celebrated nature photographers. This remarkable collection offers 80 of Rowell's finest photographic images, as well as the stories behind them - what he was after and how he achieved it.
Rowell arranges the photographs, with details of their creation, in eight exhibits according to visual themes, reflecting his fascination with the infinitely varying qualities of light found in mountain landscapes. He recounts his development as a photographer, his philosophy and techniques for creating "dynamic landscapes," and his adventures in remote, dangerous, and beautiful places, from California's Yosemite Valley to almost inaccessible peaks in China.
Rowell also explains how film and the human eye see differently, how he selects and composes the content of his work, how to work with optical phenomena and natural light, and how equipment and adventure interact in the field.

This is a must read for anyone who likes to shoot landscape photography. This book doesn't go into a lot of technical details, and the author assumes the readers have a basic knowledge of how SLRs operate, but rather it deals more with the "why" of photography and "when", which I found to be very interesting and thought provoking. Galen Rowell shares his insights about mountain light and how his mind works when he is out with a camera along with what photography meant for him, and it changed my approach to landscape photography. He also shares his unsuccessful stories, which is not very usual for these types of books, and it's good to see that even for photographers of his level things have never come easy. Luck is a big part of it all, and he has a great essay there on how to be in a better position for its appearance. In addition, this book is full of his outstanding landscape art, and that alone is worth whatever the price you will pay for it.

                                5 out of 5 stars A photography how-to book, not a camera manual.......2007-03-29

This is a book about making meaningful landscape photographs. This is not a book about which f/stop to use or how to adjust your depth of field or exposure. There are a ton of those types of books on the market. This book is about vision, learning to see and connecting personally with your images.

If you're comfortable with the mechanical aspects of your camera and are struggling with "technically well executed but lifeless images" this is your guide.

                                I highly recommend it.

                                5 out of 5 stars What can I say.......2007-01-09

This is a beautiful book..full of amazing photos and will inspire you to take pictures like Galen.

5 out of 5 stars Not many photographs.......2006-07-31

I have found suprising that there is a lot of text in this book and only few photographs. It is not an album - so don't expect one. However I enjoyed reading this book. Book is published on a thin paper (the same goes for cover) and seems not very solid.

The main issues examined in the book are what makes companies vulnerable to recessionary pressures; how companies typically respond to these pressures; how recessionary pressures have been transmitted back into labor markets and what kinds of institutional changes they have induced and, finally, whether recessionary pressures stimulate innovative activity. Having surveyed more than 600 of the U.K.'s leading companies, and made innovative use of microeconomic analysis, the authors are able to provide the most comprehensive answers yet, to this contentious area of economic debate.

                                          Book Description

When Philippa Forrester and her partner, wildlife photographer Charlie Hamilton James, decide to get out of the rat race and set up home in an old mill-worker's cottage on a river in the heart of Worcestershire, they get considerably more than they bargained for. Populated by otters, kingfishers, and water fowl, the river is teeming with life and the young couple soon fall in love with it. But it is the otters that really capture the couple's imagination, and they soon become absorbed in researching and filming this timid and endangered species. The River is the utterly captivating and personal story of their attempts to get a commission for and make a film about the families of otters, while at the same time having a baby, moving house, and pursuing their careers. Written with endless charm and real affection, featuring a cast of memorable characters, The River is packed with hilarious stories spanning floods, chicken-keeping, and wildlife-watching.

                                            Book Description

The third edition has been completely revised with all prices updated to reflect the current market for the coming year.

During 1999 and 2000 the Charlton Press published two Royal Worcester price guides, Figurines and Animals, to serve the Worcester collector, believing they represented two different collecting venues. However, two catalogues proved unnecessary, this move simply increased the cost, inconvienced the collector, and the solution was obvious, publish one catalogue for all Royal Worcester figures.

All Royal Worcester Figures from 1900 to date, have been amalgamated into one volume. The third edition is 320 pages of Royal Worcester Figures listed in RW numerical order, the complete figurine and animal range. Also included with this revised edition are 32 pages of colour illustrations showing figures from the past 100 years. An alphabetical index is included for collector cross referencing between RW number and figurine name.

New additions to an earlier series "Les Petites" coupled with four new series, "Moments," "Ladies of Literature," "Southern Belles" and "Ladies of the Isles" are all incorporated into the new listing bringing the third edition current to 2005.

Naturally, all information carried in the previous catalogues has been brought forward, designer, size, colourways, dates of issue and discontinuation, varieties and pricing are all updated for the current market place, which a collector or dealer will need for 2005.

With the rebirth of the famous Worcester Candle Snuffers in 2000 we have taken the liberty of adding the new Connoisseur Collection to the figurine catalogue. Over fifty snuffers issued between 2000 and 2004 are listed and priced.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "manufacturing mayonnaise, salad dressing, vinegar, mustard, horseradish, soy sauce, tartar sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and other prepared sauces excluding tomato-based sauces and gravy" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                                                      Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for worcestershire, soy, horseradish, meat, vegetable, seafood, and other prepared sauces excluding tomato sauces and mustard across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for worcestershire, soy, horseradish, meat, vegetable, seafood, and other prepared sauces excluding tomato sauces and mustard. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
