5 out of 5 stars Outstanding collection of original plans!.......2001-12-08

For the student of the Prairie school and early modernism, this book is an invaluable reference for original floor plans and photographs. The book includes works by many architects, but it is not limited to only the Prairie school. I believe it gives a good cross section of the popular architecture of the early 20th century. There are examples of Colonial revival homes for example in addition to the bungalows and landmark Prairie monsions.

It is hard to say what the real adventure is: five mariners exploring an uncharted sea and encountering the likes of icebergs, pirates, and mysterious island goddesses? Or five mariners exploring an uncharted and sometimes harrowing course of spiritual discovery? That both adventures overlap so artfully in this book of "spiritual fiction" is due to the craft of salty-dog writer, painter, and historian, William Gilkerson. The story line involves five mariners who were born on the same day during the Renaissance in the same port town. The five boys (who represent the five styles of the Buddha family) agree to become friends for life and to one day boldly sail a ship where no mariner has gone before. Gilkerson uses his extensive knowledge of Buddhism and sailing as well as his painter's eye to create a sweeping and ultimately satisfying voyage for us all. --Gail Hudson

        5 out of 5 stars Super Tale!.......2006-11-04

A great sea tale, one that I had a hard time putting down at times. I had not known about a religious link, so I read it from a pure nautical lore standpoint. Those who love sea stories in the days of square-sail wooden boats are surely to enjoy this easy to read novel.

3 out of 5 stars Nice themes, but boring and sloppy.......2005-09-21

Being a student of Buddhism, I really wanted to like this book, having found it mentioned in many lists of "Buddhist fiction." It does indeed convey several lessons from the Dharma, such as the invetibability of change and the futility of material pursuits. But, I found it overall a frustrating read, lacking any depth in characterization or plot. To put it bluntly, it's just a rather boring and contrived story. As I was reading it, I kept on getting the feeling that I was hitting upon an item in some preparatory outline of the book, and once exposed, hastily abandoned for the next item in the outline.

I'm also not sure who the intended audience is. The simplicity of the characters and story line seems suitable for a fable or parable for children. But I suspect the morals are too subtle and weak to pack a punch for even a devoted adult reader, much less a younger one. The book reminds me of the Celestine Prophecy books, motivated by compelling spiritual ideas but falling flat due to lackluster writing.

I would recommend something like Herman Hesse's "Siddhartha" for a more satisfying spiritual fiction experience.

        5 out of 5 stars A Wonderous Adventure!.......2000-03-06

When I came across this book, I picked it up as an afterthought. Once I started reading, I simply could not put it down.

Gilkerson has created a mesmerizing world, both wonderfully complex and yet awash in simplicity at the same time. Set somewhere in the 16th or 17th Century, there is always a hint of magic somewhere deep, deep beneath the surface of the story.

Five children, born at the very same moment into different walks of life in the seafaring town of Port, grow up together, fast friends upon their first meeting, eventually circumnavigating their continent in a vessel they construct themselves.

Each has a special talent that when combined with that of their counterparts becomes a force to be reckoned with.

They take their names (indeed the only names we know them by), from the maritime talents they show best, regardless of their station in life. Pilot, the master navigator; Flags, the flamboyant thespian and artist; Bosun, the master rigger and sailmaker; Steward, cook and victual supplier, despite his royal heritage; and Crew, who holds everything together.

The thrust of the book is that the five heroes are actually one, all different sides of the same personality, and that life evolves in a circle.

The author's unique knowledge of sailing craft combined with a wonderful storytelling style add to this charming text. The occasional artwork throughout the book is also quite effective in enhancing the story.

Hard to believe this is the author's first foray into fiction. With any luck it will not be his last!

This book will certainly find a spot on your bookshelf for your most favorite of stories. You certainly should not pass up "Ultimate Voyage"!

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly well crafted fable.......1998-09-02

An excellently crafted allegorical fable. I don't think anyone could read this book without it leading to a heightened understanding of their own personality and the personalities of those around them. The only thing about it that people might find difficult or unlikely is how true the protagonists remain to their characters. Real people aren't so black and white. But, this is a fable...

4 out of 5 stars I saw myself in an ultimate light.......1998-07-29

Glikerson's novel has shown me all sides of my personality. I am Bosun, Pilot, and Flags with a touch of Crew and a dash of Steward. Although this novel hasn't changed my life. It has shown me my foilbles in a very intriguing story which held me from the first strike. I am a sailor and I could feel the sea roll under me as I read of the Ultimate Voyage. The five are one in us all.

        1 out of 5 stars Pamphlet.......2001-05-03

There's some useful information in this book; but it picks on just a few unrelated subjects for discussion and is in no way a comprehensive manual. More of a pamphlet with a few useful points. If your fishing is limited to sundays; don't buy this book. The author is very scathing about people less fortunate than himself. I have a full-time job, but take my fishing seriously, while still enjoying the odd beer. But for some reason, Lenny considers me an object of derision.

5 out of 5 stars It's like having a professional guide in the boat with you........1999-07-26

I've read plenty of books filled with somebody's fishing stories, the lessons of which never seem to fit the conditions I face when I'm on the water. And most books about fishing techniques hand me generalizations that are hard--really hard--to apply to specific situations. Mr. Rudow's book is different. It's full of great advice that you can use every time you're out on the water. Stripers hitting short? Here's the answer. Need to rig up so the bass won't strip your baits and leave you with a bare hook? Here's the answer. This is a terrific book from a guy who probably tops the fish's 10 Most Wanted List. Buy, borrow, or steal this book and use it--you won't be sorry.

        Book Description

An invigorating behind-the-scenes look at the world of extreme sailing, The Race is also a taut, engrossing account of the first running of the competition called The Race, which began on December 31, 2000, in Barcelona and ended sixty-two days later in Marseilles. The most intense event of its kind -- a nonstop circumnavigation of the globe in the fastest boats ever built -- The Race attracts some of the world's best sailors and arguably its most eccentric personalities. Tim Zimmermann, an experienced blue-water sailor, relates in knuckle-whitening detail how and why sailors risk millions of dollars and their lives to dash around the world in record time. He garnishes this story with a chronicle of the tumultuous history of extreme sailing from the nineteenth century to today. Zimmermann "puts the reader right on board with the tough, colorful crews as they take a crash course (sometimes literally) in how to handle these astonishing machines" (Derek Lundy, author of Godforsaken Sea).

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great read for the sailor and non-sailor alike.......2003-03-20

An entire sailing subculture exists whose entire purpose is to see how far and how fast they can push a sailboat and her crew. This book chronicles the ultimate push, called The Race. The object of this race is to be the fastest boat to sail around the world without stopping.

Zimmerman first tells us the fascinating history of fast sailboats and their owner's constant quest for greater speed and longer distances. At first the quest was for commercial reasons. Eventually it became sport. The boats described in this book are its ultimate manifistation.

This is a wonderful book about tough determined people racing extreme boats in extreme seas. A blast from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful story set in helpful context.......2002-09-05

The Race delivers on the promise of an intensely educational and suspenseful read. I learned much more than I expected to about multihull design, sailing history, and the characters involved in circumnavigation adventures, but I was also viscerally "there" during the more stressful parts of the Race itself. Zimmerman provides exceptional context as well as insight into what makes these men and their sailing machines run. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone curious about the quest for speed across the waves.

5 out of 5 stars High Seas Adventure.......2002-08-03

Although I am not a hard core sailor, I picked up this book because I love adventure. I was glad I did because I discovered a world of eccentric and entertaining characters who kept me engaged and amused as I clipped along with this well-written, fast-paced narrative. I loved the concise history of round the world racing and the crazy characters who got it started--like Blondie Hasler who believed sailors should "die like gentelmen" instead of calling for rescue and endangering the lives of the rescuers. The Race itself was run by the world's best sailors, but it was the hi-tech boats, the tactics and the challenge of the Southern Ocean that really hooked me. A great read for anyone who loves the oceans and extreme adventure.

5 out of 5 stars A sailing book for sailors and non sailors alike.......2002-07-30

The Race acccurately describes the complex human dynamics, emotional tension, technological achievments, and capricious play of fortune that combined in the world's first non-stop around the world sailboat race. Beginning with a fascinating and sympathetic account of the early pioneers of round the world sailboat racing, Zimmermann then details the technological conundrums and challenges confronting the computer-aided designers of the Race's catamarans and explains the rationale for, and consequences of, the decisions they made. His account of the Race itself is a skillful blend of analysis and story telling that touches on all the factors that shaped the outcome of the contest, technology, tactical decision-making, human dynamics, and most of all, mother nature, in the form of wind and current. Throughout the book, the author provides just the right amount of technical detail and analysis without overwhelming the non sailor (or weatherman). More important, Zimmermann captures, in terms I believe accessible to the non sailing professional, a sense of the excitement, danger, and spiritual satisfaction that draws men to challenge the sea at her most fearsome. Very few of us can circumnavigate the world non stop in a catamaran, but The Race provides the closest substitute for that experience this side of Cape Horn and the roaring forties.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Paced, Fascinating and Fun.......2002-06-09

This is a great book for anyone looking for an interesting and entertaining read. In "The Race", author Zimmermann combines the dynamic story of the 'round the world Race with the intriguing historical context of circumnavigational sailing. He tells the action-packed story of the people and boats involved in the Race, incorporating fascinating detail (did you know the sailors on these high-speed sailing yachts sleep with their feet toward the front of the boat to avoid breaking their necks in the event of rapid deceleration?!) with a fast-paced writing style. If you enjoy adventure books like "Into Thin Air" or "The Proving Ground", "The Race" is for you.

As a lifelong sailor, I can say there is only one book which really captures the intensity of what it is like to race big boats. It's the superbowl without the spectators as the only place to watch is as a participant.

Except with this book where the motion, intensity, light & drama (sometimes with drastic consequences) comes home.

This is a coffee table book you will pick up over and over and over...

                    5 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring.......1998-12-05

Purchasing this book was a shot in the dark for me. I ordered it online and could only go on how the cover looked. I had originally ordered it as a gift for my dad--an avid sailor of 20 years--but, because of my own interest in the sport, when I got the book and took a look I was so inspired that I decided to keep it for myself. I got my dad a different book.

Since then, some of my friends have seen it sitting on my shelf and pulled it down. Even my friends who know nothing about sailing and thought it was an "old man's sport" were surprised by what they saw. The pictures in the book almost come alive before your eyes. They're snapshots taken in the face of the action sailing has to offer on good windy days. And for my female friends, the book is almost like a 170 page "fireman callendar" (if you know what I mean)--sailors aren't exactly ghost-colored toothpicks.

Its a great book that belongs beside another great book called Sailing Thoroughbreads.

I admit it. This book does not contain any new or incredible advice. It's all pretty much just common sense stuff. The benefit of the book is that it is very motivating. All of the knowledge in the world will not do you any good unless you actually apply it. The author does a good job of relating his personal stories. You leave the book feeling like you CAN do it.

That's some free advice that you won't find in this book. Solomon offers such obvious advice that anyone could have written it. Here's the summary of 163 pages: Get a fifteen year instead of 30 year mortgage and save money to prepay it! Wow what a revelation! He then offers dozens of boring, simplistic suggestions on how to do that including clip coupons, shop for bargains, set a budget, don't overspend, avoid expensive habits. Did I really spend money to read this when Mom & Dad told me this when I was ten? For free! I stopped reading when Mr. Solomon advised me to bring a pen to a closing! Trees died for this? Also, Mr. Solomon freely admits to having no children, so this book is not really designed for parents who have a little more difficulty saving than what he refers to as TINKS (Two Incomes, No Kids). His argument on the value of prepaying a mortgage (rather than sustaining one for the tax credit) is the only thing worthwhile in this overpadded book. How to win the mortgage war and get out of debt? Talk a publisher into printing a book of advice everyone has already heard then collect those royalty checks!
