5 out of 5 stars A great idea and project book.......2007-05-15

This book has fun ideas shown in steps and in color! There are 40 projects with material lists and great texture effects that most anyone can accomplish. Very easy to follow the directions and some projects even have variations for additional ideas!

      5 out of 5 stars worth owning.......2007-02-19

This is not merely a picture book, nor is it a long-winded teaching book. The teaching is there, done via a series of projects which involve the reader in using the techniques. I love the clear way the content is provided. And I like it that Ms Curry gives her preferences, and reasons, for specific products. Altogether a great book.

5 out of 5 stars This will replace all other stamping resource books!!.......2007-01-05

This is a must-have book for serious stamper's. Nancy's techniques are very detailed and creative. You'll be surprised how many supplies you have on hand and around the house when trying her techniques. I've read the book twice and I've tried all her techniques. Believe me you will not be able to put this book down. Definitely a stamper's bible!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!!.......2006-04-15

This is one of the best rubber stamping technique books I have come across. Unlike many other technique books, Nancy sticks primarily to dimensional and textural effects that can be created with stamps and ink on paper. There are a couple of projects devoted to stamping on other surfaces such as acetate or shrink plastic, but these are in the minority. For those of you who are interested in broadening your techniques for rubber stamp art you use to create cards, you will not be disappointed with this book. Nancy uses materials that are common to any stamper's stash--ink, stamps, watercolor crayons, glue gun, etc. You won't have to go searching for exotic, hard-to-find or expensive materials to complete the projects. I LOVE how the photos provide very clear step-by-step directions for each technique. I don't know if Nancy is the model for the photos, but I sure smiled when I saw how each stamp was heavily ink-stained and obviously well-loved and used!

This is a good general reference book. I am glad that I purchased it, but it isn't my faux painting Bible. However, if you are looking for many ideas, inspirations and photos, this is a good item for you. I am a seasoned amateur and for me, I need specific product references to really make the recipes work. This is more general. The bottom line; it is a nice book to own.

5 out of 5 stars Really Detailed Instructions.......2004-12-29

This breaks each technique (verdigris, liming, stippling, etc.) down into 5 to 7 steps. Each step is shown in a photos. The book is compact, but covers a lot in 224 pages. Some effects I hadn't seen before in books or in the brochures at paint stores. There is one showing painting faux sandstone blocks.
I can hardly wait to get the paint and try one of these effects. They are shown for a variety of surfaces (walls, floors, furniture, accessories).
Highly recommended if you want something besides plain ol' paint.

        Airbrush Artist's Pocket Palette

2 out of 5 stars This book is bad book for a beginner........2002-01-03

As a beginner I found this book to be inadequate for my needs. There are 63 pages of nicely spiral bound(book lies flat) examples of various effects. That is to say... 63 pages of coloful rectangles with some comments about how to achieve a particular effect. It's sort of like reading the ingredients for a recipe but not telling you how to mix the ingredients or cook it.

I imagine that this book has some use to an experienced airbrusher but I suspect that once you have the experience the book is not very useful and is merely a nice 63 page of pretty rectangles.

This was not a good book for me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent examples and wonderful illustrations.......2000-04-16

The Airbrush Artist's Pocket Palette is filled with wonderful techniques to create hundreds of effects and textures. I would not know how to create hair, skin, wood, metallic surfaces, stone or highlights with my airbrush without this book.

You will need to have some knowledge about color palettes and airbrushes to fully understand the techniques descibed in the book.

The book also contains several pieces of completed artwork. The techniques they used to create the paintings are described with the corresponding painting.

I have enjoyed this book since the day I bought it.

            Book Description

If you want to grasp the rich complexity of the past, observes environmental historian Donald Worster, you could do worse than spend time on the prairie. Seen from high above, it is an orderly grid of farmland; closer to ground level, it reveals the industriousness of humanity in the making and remaking of the land.

Considered by many to be lacking in inspiration, the prairie is shown by photographer Terry Evans to be a land of varied textures. Evans seeks to have us pay attention to the ways we perceive both the natural and the cultural in this underappreciated landscape, and in this stunning collection of photographs she reads the land for the stories it has to tell.

Widely known for her spectacular photographs of pristine prairie, Evans here works at low altitudes to focus on the land as an inhabited place. These fifty black-and-white images document specific locations and disclose some of the contradictions and mysteries about how we live on the prairie. Through her lens we view the site of an ancient Indian village, targets on the Smoky Hill Weapons Range, and old country cemeteries; observe the startling contours of plowed fields and sandpits; and witness the tranquility of deer grazing on new winter wheat. All of these images help us to understand the layers of life on the prairie and the complex interweaving of nature and man.

"Outdoor pictures are supposed to be scenes of picturesque beauty," Worster writes in his accompanying essay, "and the prairies have seldom met that ideal for most people. Only a few artists have tried to figure out how to get its tangled, intricate weave into a revealing frame." Terry Evans has met that challenge, staking out a middle ground between the extremes of wilderness and grid to show us that the prairie is more than a commodity to be subdivided and sold. She brings to The Inhabited Prairie a keen sense of understanding combined with deep artistic vision, opening our eyes to a prairie we live with but perhaps seldom see.

This 9-3/4" x 11-1/2" book contains 50 photographs printed in duotone.

5 out of 5 stars The Full Color OZ.......2000-03-24

Don Worster once again intertwines his artful use of words with the photographic mastery of Terry Evans to make The Inhabited Prairie a true masterpiece in landscape narrative. The writing, reminiscent of John McPhee, shows professor Worster's love of his native Kansas landscapes. Furthermore, the photography of Evans superbly depicts the Kansas landscape and prairie mixed with the marks of the modern world. From aerial shots of Stan Herd's monumental crop canvases to the ruins of days gone by, Evans & Worster collaborated to expose the natural beauty of a uniquely beautiful state. A pleasant read that should occupy sitting room tables across Kansas and the Great Plains.

From Mind to Market: Reinventing the Retail Supply Chain is his prescription for 21st-century success. His strategy involves getting into the heads of consumers, accurately anticipating their needs, and then quickly meeting them with effectively developed products and services. Blackwell illustrates his points with examples from companies that already employ such practices, including Kinko's, The Limited, and Banc One Corporation.

                  Book Description

"Anyone in business today who hopes to be in business tomorrow needs to understand the rules of the new marketplace," says Roger Blackwell, one of the most sought-after authorities on consumer behavior and marketing. The traditional approach to retailing, beginning at the point of manufacture and ending with the sale to the consumer, is out of date and unrealistic. "In an ultracompetitive marketplace, manufacturers can no longer dictate what consumers will buy. The savvy consumer is more educated than ever as to what he or she wants and where to get it at the best price. Using this information to develop the products consumers are looking for is demand-chain management."

Featuring visionary companies like Wal-Mart, AT&T and Kinko's, whose leadership as demand-chain managers is helping them to create the marketplace of the 21st-century, Blackwell illustrates the cutting-edge concept of demand-chain management and its role in revolutionizing retailing in the new millennium.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing earthshattering. Could've been said in one chapter........2001-01-29

Somewhat disappointing read in that there really wasn't any synopsis at the end of the book to bring all of the cases in point and related ideas together to make a coherent "call to action." While the information presented is interesting, educational, and valuable, the concept of "demand chain management" is not all that radical. The fact the more companies do not engage in the practice is what's really radical! There is no excuse for not conducting rigorous market research and analysis and gaining an intimate understanding of the customer base being served (or disserved in some cases). Mr. Blackwell's information could have been summed up in a 15 page article in a respectable journal. There was no need to produce an entire book on this.

2 out of 5 stars Listen to your customer! Is this the "radical" new approach?.......2000-09-25

There is nothing radical, or ground-breaking in this book. Contrary to what the cover or any of the previous comments may imply.. The basic (and almost the only) point is that "one should always listen to the customer," which is nice but not new or radical. No matter how hard you look, you will not be able to find any more "ideas" on retail marketing beyond this basic point.

Chapter 6 (Shifting Functions among Supply-Chain Players) has a very timely topic, however the content is extremely poor. Short of examples, Professor takes on the universities as inefficient supply-chain members.

Apart from being disappointed by the conceptual content of the book, I also feel fooled by the "real world" examples generously sprinkled throughout the text. In none of these examples, there is enough relevant knowledge to be able to say (at least roughly) this is how they did it. In fact, most of the descriptions of real-world practices are full with irrelevant knowledge with only one discernable purpose: To advertise a bunch of companies under the disguise of a serious book. That maybe why there are so many of those success (!) stories.

So, this book itself is an example of setting up too high and inaccurate expectations on the mind of consumers, and failing badly to abide by the implicit contract created by those expectations. It is a huge marketing mistake!

Finally, I must also mention that my faith in Customer Reviews has weakened tremendously. I simply cannot believe this repetitive dribble got all 5's!

(PS. Don't be fooled by its curious, nicely designed cover. It reflects a pathetic "brave new world" vision of marketing: People barcoded for collecting consumption information.)

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Insights to Parties within Demand Chain.......1999-07-22

This book shows a lot of cases quoted from customer-centric winning retailers. These are very realistic and helpful information to the parties related to supply chain. The expression by "Do the right things right" means the desired and normal management style. However a lot of companies are difficult to do so. "From Mind to Market " leader challenges to do so. This is a major key success factor. Finally, the case of Manco moved me too much. Because their customer services are not to be assumed cost center, but to be invested proactively. This is extremely excellent concept. Most of the companies don't think it right.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening Read into the Retail Industry!.......1998-11-20

This has been a most gratifying read...only just finished reading all the valuable insights into how retailers have been reinventing themselves in the tight marketplaces and carved strong niches for themselves with the detailed database knowledge accrued from their existing and would-be customers. Amazing the lengths to which companies, especially the SMEs, go to garner a strong fellowship of loyal customer base.

5 out of 5 stars To all of those who paid full price at the bookstore.......1998-11-06

I am a student taking Dr. Blackwell's marketing 650 at OSU fall 98. (GO BUCKS) The book is really well written and is full of interesting and informative information -- I just wish he would have told all of us about Amazon.com at the start of the class so we could have saved 1/3 off the inflated OSU bookstore price!

                    Book Description

This insightful analysis of the first 10 years of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) offers a valuable assessment of the opportunities - as well as the potential perils - that lie ahead. Nevaer presents five industries (construction, financial services, energy, education, and environmental) with significant opportunities for growth in NAFTA's second decade and strategies to realize their potential. As NAFTA moves into its second decade, corporate America must take measure of the $1 trillion in market opportunities. Detailing NAFTA's past impact on and future potential for the North American neighbors, this book provides an excellent tool for developing and implementing corporate strategies as the North American economies integrate more fully during NAFTA's second decade.

4 out of 5 stars An even tempered approach.......2004-03-14

The book jacket has a few words by a Mexican consultant who hits it on the head. This is the only serious, even-handed book on this subject. Nevaer shows no political bias; he analysizes and evaluates an emotional and political subject thoroughly without reference to these useless approaches.

                    Hurrah.
