The Basics.......2000-05-31
Although the pictures look a bit dated this is an excellent introduction to urban design-or the aesthetic, functional and phycological effects of architecture and layout in the urban area. As a text book for students or the interested citizen, it would be a good first read. Unfortunately, it comes across as anti-modernism through its almost angry condemnation of modern arcitecture's disreguard for urban cohesiveness. What it is really trying to say is that the extreme contrast of modern architecture with older urban buildings should be used very carefully and should not damage the aesthetics of urban areas.
The APA did a good job and this book delivers just what the title promises.

Finally!!!.......2005-08-25
I have nearly 200 art instruction books and this is my FIRST purchase of a book on flower painting (I am primarily interested in landscapes & cityscapes). I had a chance to browse through this book on a couple of previous occassions and was surprised at the color and spontaneity of the work. I finally decided to give in and purchase my first flower book and after spending a couple of days with it, I am excited to try to go and paint a floral arrangement! This book really goes into some wonderful explanations and the illustrations are gorgeous. If you like flowers, you will want to cut this book up and hang the pages on your wall. If you don't really care for flowers (me), you'll gain a whole new appreciation for the potential of them in a painting. Of particular note is how the artist handles shadows and reflected light. WOW, what luminocity. No dead color here. This is "transparent watercolor" at its finest!
a joy to look at.......2003-10-01
This book is a gem - it is full of Mrs. Martin's beautiful, colorful and inspiring paintings. She writes well and packs lots of instruction into the pages. Her setups are so unique that they make you want to try some on your own floor. I am an artist, and use mostly soft pastels but got alot of helpful information from this book. She blends realism with abstraction in a wonderful proportion. Her technique is worth copying. But above all, the beautiful artwork is inspiring - causing the artist to pick up tools and paint.

This book by Jean Martin is a thorough teaching manual backed up with magnificent illustrations of her paintings. Everything you need to know about watercolour painting including composition , expression , texture , light ,colour etc is dealt with in a lively exciting way. Glorious paintings demonstrate her points throughout the entire book. A must buy for the serious watercolourist as well as for beginners. It inspires!!

This is another very helpful and clearly expressed photo novel from John Hedgecoe. There are many things to think of, analyze and try! It complement your creativity and had written like knowledgeable friend conversation style.
For those reviewer who doubt John Hedgecoe's qualification. 50-mm lens could be wide if you use MF camera 6x6 for example. And photography it is art, it is not military style manual of actions.
I proudly can recommend ANY of Hedgecoe's books as the best art of photography drills. It helps to develop photographic vision BTW, it helps a lot to understand composition. Learn before leave laughable reviews,

Once again, John Hedgecoe has called up his vast portfolio to illustrate a book on landscape photography that is both inspiring and educational. Hedgecoe covers a lot of ground in this book and always has an image to illustrate a particular point. The book is well organized and easy to understand. His pictures come from around the world and are very diverse. There are both black and white and color. I think this book by a master photography educator is good for someone looking for a good introduction that covers all aspects of landscape photography, or for more experienced photographers looking for new approaches to the subject.

Am I supposed to get something out of this book?.......2001-06-12
I'm afraid this book is simply horrid. The text is brief and vague, with a very limited amount of technical information. While each general topic of landscape photography (with a heavy emphasis on compositional elements, like the rule of thirds, lines, etc.) is covered, they are covered in less detail than a basic "how to" pamphlet handed out at camera stores. Most appalling of all, an enormous number of the example photographs are seriously flawed. So many horizons are grossly off, and more than a few look like they were taken by a twelve year old shooting with a disposable. At one point, a 50mm lens is described as "wide angle." These kinds of things make me seriously question whether the author is really qualified to be writing a serious book on technique.
This book would be valuable only to someone entirely unfamiliar with the basic tenets of composition, but there are many better general photography books that explain these things far more effectively than this. I give it 2 stars rather than 1 only because some of the black and white photos are very nice (although the attempt to cover black and white photography, like everything else in the book, is vaporous).

Refuting the "new economy" utopians.......2007-02-24
Tony Smith's "Technology and Capital in the Age of Lean Production" is an extremely thorough and detailed analysis of the process of lean production, its comparison to Fordism, the viability of the claims of lean production proponents, and the phenomenon's implications for Marxist theory. Smith goes into astounding detail in describing and analysing the shopfloor nuts and bolts of lean production as well as the ways in which different units of capital interact in this production form, and he shows that it is, indeed, a structurally new way of proceeding compared to the Fordist factory production that has dominated capitalism since the interbellum.
The various chapters are devoted to assessing every aspect of lean production from the perspectives of its supporters and subsequently of Marxist theorists, and this is not limited to just the surface phenomena of the production process - deskilling and globalization are given their due in this book as well. Refuting such silly "new economy" enthousiasts like Florida, Kenney and Womack, political philosopher Tony Smith demonstrates the complete applicability of the Marxist critique of capitalism to each and every real development demonstrable in lean production, and also that the change from Fordism to lean production serves to confirm rather than disprove the expectations of Marx & Engels on the relevant points. The final chapter then provides an alternative way of producing as conceived by Tony Smith, which seems to be basically a form of market socialism, heavily leaning on David Schweickart. Personally I consider market socialism to have significant flaws, but that need not detract from this book's value (and the chapter is rather an aside anyway).
It must be said that this book is written in a rather dry style, especially in the first chapters, and some intermediate knowledge of microeconomics is recommended. The very detail and in-depth discussion of the production processes and the various specialists' commentary on them make for excruciatingly slow reading, so that the just over 150 pages of actual text in this book may take as much as twice the usual time. But if one can find the patience, this book is very rewarding for any radical with an interest in economics.
Good critique of the "new economy".......2001-03-08
Interesting marxian critique of the lean production system. Discusses globalization, skill, just-in-time production. Smith argues that "lean production" is a worthwhile analytical category. He further argues that the claims made for lean production by the "new capitalist utopians" are unfounded, and that lean production modifies capital's antagonisms rather than resolves them.
Rather poor idea of what socialism might be, but you can't expect everything.

This book is a must if you dont remember much from your classes. The refresher course is straight to the point, and the tests on the computer really help out ALOT. If you can pass the tests on the cd, passing the exam is easy.

I found this book to be very helpful. I especially liked the glossary of terms and the condensed review in the middle of the book. I used the CD exams as practice for my test to get used to the computer format. I passed both parts on my first try and I think this book helped me do that.

This is more helpful than the college courses I had. The college courses are required, but this is a definite "must have" before taking the test.

Unable to transfer ebook to my daughter's computer........2005-02-09
I do not recommend buying this ebook because the Adobe ebook process did not work for me. I attempted to transfer the book from the parent computer to my daughter's computer. I followed the directions exactly (I believe), and I could not "activate" the ebook for my daughter to use. I wish this book was available to paper version. Apparently Adobe ebook is not yet ready for prime time.
