    Book Description

In High Theory/Low Culture, Mikita Brottman uses the tools of "high" cultural theory to examine many areas of today's popular culture, including style magazines, sports, shopping, tabloid newspapers, horror movies and pornography. In doing so, she not only demonstrates the practical use of "high" theory as it relates to our everyday world, but she also investigates the kinds of "low" culture that are regularly dismissed by academic scholars. Through a close examination of these cultural forms, Brottman reveals how the kinds of popular culture that we usually take for granted are, in fact, far more complex and sophisticated than is normally assumed.

This is a very clear, intelligent cultural analysis of Barthes, Bakhtin and Lacan, and how their work can be applied to today's popular culture (most of the examples are British, but not too obscure). Nice, concise summaries of theorists and their work.

5 out of 5 stars Of some interest, perhaps.......1999-05-19

I picked this book up for a laugh, having found Adam Gopnik's New Yorker articles on art shows to be lightweight and none-to-brilliant, especially considering how clueless he is when looking at paintings by women. You'll get the same clever jabbering here, and even the rare insight (perhaps thanks to his collaborator, who knows?), but I still think gopnik should stick to food (perhaps he normally sticks to food!!) Overall, this isn't a scholarly effort, and Gopnik is entirely clueless when it comes to post-modern feminist discourse, but at least I warned ya, right?

This is certainly the most boring book on architecture that has ever been written! The sentences are the size of a paragraph and at the end you've forgotten what the beginning was about. A lot of attention goes to the contemporaries of Gropius, like Bruno Taut and Adolf Behne, and the constant comparisions of the ideas of these three men are very confusing and tireing to read. Even if you are a great admirer of Gropius and the Bauhaus, you will throw away this book screaming after reading just one chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Common sense book not only for CMMI.......2005-07-26

I bought this book because my Company is thinking about getting into CMMI. I realized that this book is a common sense approach to process improvement. I was skeptic about CMMI and the way that other companies implement it. This book makes you keep your feet on the ground. It is an imparcial approach to a difficult task. You may save yourself a lot of money just by following the guidelines recommended by the author. In my case, I used some of the recommendations in my own process, because common sense is applicable everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Gutsy and Honest approach to Process Improvement!.......2004-04-20

Finally, a refreshingly honest approach to CMMI and process improvement. Michael has an uncanny ability to see into the heart of organizational psychology and points out the real reasons for attempting any improvement or organizational change. He strips away the hype surrounding CMMI and focuses on what's really important...obtaining results and improving the bottom line. It might be considered contrarian or even heretical by those making a living by selling CMMI, but I call it practical, gutsy and honest. A must read by any organization considering change regardless of the model chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected gem - read before leaping!.......2004-03-22

If you're expecting a book that shows how to implement the CMMI, or even one that gushes about its benefits you're in for a surprise. Yes, this book does show how to achieve process improvement by using the CMMI as a model, but it differs greatly from the recipe approaches of similar books that will have you marching over a cliff instead of improving your organization. The author does this by uncovering fallacies and the blind paths the CMMI (or any process improvement initiative) represents.

Here's what to expect from this book, and why you should read it cover-to-cover before embarking on a CMMI implementation or other process improvement initiative. How to spot and avoid common pitfalls such as:

              - focusing on the process instead of the benefits, which of course, can be counterproductive when the process itself is applied blindly and without regard for real efficiency.

              - avoiding the 'when all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail' effect; i.e., attempting to apply the CMMI to everything

              - mis-diagnosing problems with the process and applying the wrong solution; for example, scope creep in a project causes a reaction that often results in claims that the requirements management process is broken when the real problem is a lack of discipline or standards (not the same as a process)

Besides showing what does not work, and forcing you to look at your real goals before embarking on a CMMI implementation or process improvement initiative, the author leads you through a realistic appraisal of your goals and objectives, and shows you how to accomplish them. He is a strong proponent of using a systems view, and shows how to apply systems thinking principles to achieving your goals and objectives. This is the real value of this book, and why it's a sanity check for any organization that is about to embark on any improvement initiative.

Of course, if you are going to implement the CMMI, in whole or relevant parts to improve your capability, this book provides a clear roadmap for doing just that. Do not let my previous remarks lead you to believe that this book is anti-CMMI because it's not. It's merely anti-unrealism.

Regardless of your end goals, much of the material in this book applies to any activity, from strategic planning to process improvement to embracing a methodology. It's one of the best books I've read, and one that anyone contemplating CMMI should read before they read anything else about that model.

                Book Description

In seventeenth-century Valladolid, Spain’s new capital, Miguel Cervantes is busy writing his comic masterpiece, Don Quixote, which is being issued in installments. It is quickly making him the most popular author in the country, when three potential disasters strike: Cervantes discovers that there is a real Don Quixote, just like the character he thought he’d invented; a jealous poet concocts a scheme involving one of the novel’s other characters to make Cervantes a laughingstock; and Cervantes falls in love with a beautiful, widowed, but un-available duchess. Many duels, misunderstandings, politicking, and betrayals later, Don Quixote himself comes to Cervantes’ rescue.

This sparkling tale of crazed knights, thwarted love, and literary rivalry is set against the back-ground of a mighty empire suffering from a century of reckless wars and a ruling hierarchy stultified by patronage and ritual. Peopled with an engagingly idiosyncratic cast that ranges from a Machiavellian duke to a misanthropic poacher, this charming story is imbued with the spirit, verve, and humor of the great novel to which it pays playful tribute. Tilting at Windmills is a dazzling evocation of Cervantes’ life and times, and a brilliant weave of fact, fiction, and farce.

                4 out of 5 stars A Very Strong Debut.......2007-08-09

I am definitely impressed with Branston's first foray into fiction. I picked this book up at a used book store simply because of the cover. Is this a bad way to choose books? Of course. Regardless of how you come across the story, it works on many, many levels.

Branston's style is engaging and entertaining. I wish I could tell you what was so funny about it, but I fear I could not do this tale justice. I laughed out loud at several junctures. The book starts off strong, drags for about 50 pages or so, and then takes off like a rocket towards high comedy.

Whether you're a fan of Cervantes and Don Quixote or not, this is definitely a book worth reading.

                5 out of 5 stars A uniquely crafted original.......2006-04-23

Not since Cervantes' original (of which I've been a fan since my teens), has a book captured the essence of Don Quixote de la Mancha as this one. It has also re-captured the spirit of the eccentric soul as well. Richly and originally written, it is by no means pedantic, but a joy to read. This wonderful novel will stretch the imagination and hopefully make the term "Quixotic" part of the vernacular; possibly recruiting a new legion of Cervantes fans. It has certainly inspired me to re-read the original.

                5 out of 5 stars A true 5 stars.......2005-03-29

Some books put you to sleep, other ones awaken your most creative thoughts and visions.
I love books like this one that can show me things in a new, unpredictable way. Books that make me think and treat me with respect with their intelligent nature.
This novel is much more than just a "story". It is history, in its own way. And even with its ambitious aim of offering a new interpretation of such great characters, it never lets you down. It never disappoints you. Amusing and poetical, sometimes sad but always light in its wonderful truthful tone full of colors and music.

                5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-03-08

This book is like a finely woven textile of Julian Branston's poetic outlook; that of a writer who follows the literary of the Old Masters. Every scene and situation in this incredible story is crafted with feeling and filled with joy, so that the reader right from the beginning doesn't want to put the book down. One of those books that I will re-read many times.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2005-03-08

This is a wonderful book, in so many respects. Even before I was drawn into the plot, I was struck by the beautiful language. Elegant, poetic, refined throughout. (Senor Cervantes must be very pleased with Mr Branston's work!) And then, I felt magically transported into 17th century Spain. The book is a dazzling evocation of Cervantes' life and times, a brilliant weave of facts, fiction and farce. One by one, I was introduced to finely portrayed characters, Cervantes himself, the Old Knight, the Duchess, among others. Then there's the incredible sense of humour. Sometimes it's just a little tickle in the background, at other times, I felt like I was in the middle of some 17th century Laurel and Hardy routine. Branston gives us complete mayhem, utter slapstick, in the most deadpan, elegant language possible. Madly funny. It's so deadpan, it's wonderful. But that's not all. A few moments later, Branston moves into a very different direction. There are delicate studies of interiors, of gardens, there are deeply touching psychological observations. Hilarious at times, deeply touching at other times. It feels as though Cervantes is alive again. And it all ends with a most unexpected twist. I loved it.

                        Book Description

With a lyrical tale of love and loss, Joseph Pittman joins the ranks of beloved authors such as Elizabeth Berg and Nicholas Sparks as he carries readers on an epic journey -- through the joys and tears of a life renewed -- and chronicles a very special love.

At thirty-four, Brian Duncan has it all. The trendy Manhattan life, a fast-track job at a high-powered PR firm, a gorgeous fiancée -- a coworker with a future as exciting as his own. Then, in a single moment of deception, Brian's world crumbles. Bitterly betrayed, he decides to toss away all he has ever worked for and leave the city's busy streets behind.

He finds himself irresistibly drawn to the road. On a hillside along New York's Hudson River Valley, Brian sees a giant windmill, its sails transfixing in their beauty. And running down the green hill toward the magnificent windmill is a lovely little girl, her blond hair floating in the wind. Her name is Janey, and she and her quietly alluring mother Annie, who owns the windmill, strike a chord in Brian's heart.

It is a turning point in Brian's life, as he finds the small-town charms of Linden Corners comforting. He stays a day, and then another, and before long he has become another resident of this sleepy little world. Is it the windmill that has inspired him, or Annie Sullivan, whose elusive quality matches Brian's own questions about life? Even as Annie and Brian feel their relationship deepening into passion, the uncertainties they battle loom large -- perhaps too large. Through the force of nature and the hand of fate, Brian learns that love comes in unexpected ways.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great feel-good read!.......2005-10-24

The heartbreaking story of a man, a woman, and a little girl, destined to be a family but bound to reality by past mistakes and regret. This is an intense look into the heart of a man who makes a simple stop on a back road to look at an old windmill and ends up entranced by a beautiful little girl and her mother. This novel is heartwarming, yet sad and almost impossible to put down once started. The reader falls in love with the characters as they experience true happiness and the fear of losing that happiness.

4 out of 5 stars Looking forward to the Sequel.......2003-04-27

I didn't want this book to end - although I had to see how it would. I wanted Linden Corners to be real, I wanted the Windmill to be real, and I wanted the directions to vacation there. Living in the Hudson Valley region, I thought Mr. Pittman captured the true essence of the region, and although the characters of the book were fictional, I felt they were very real and believable.

This book was very enjoyable, real and totally involving. A quick summer book which was a nice change from typical formula books. It had enough twists that I didn't predict the ending. I look forward to Joseph Pittmans second book.

                        1 out of 5 stars Sentimental Slop.......2001-06-27

What a piece of sentimental slop this book is.Looking for flaws is like looking for hay in a haystack. The setting is a rural paradise, a sort of Wordsworthian Eden in contrast with the cruel, wicked city. Oddly enough, despite being set in the historic and beautiful Hudson valley, there is no real sense of place. The river is "beautiful", but no mention of local custom, history, or social climate. Its citizens are idealized native angels who welcome strangers and become trusting lifelong friends after five minutes. The earth-mother sweetheart's daughter is a precocious and sweetly cute Margaret O'Brien clone. The biggest weakness of the book, however, is the main character, a sensitive, self-absorbed man of feeling who spouts cliches and moral platitudes in sentimental plentitude. His first person dialog never allows him to become real or believable. The plot is predictable from the first chapter. Yes, there's plenty of sentimental hay in Joseph Pittman's haystack.

                        1 out of 5 stars Sloppy sentimentality.......2001-06-24

Sloppy sentimentality is the essence of this badly written first novel. The protagonist is a bundle of self-conscious sensitivity, a man of shallow sentiments and saccarine emotions. It's no wonder his sweetheart choses to sleep with another man. Janey is a modern day Margaret O'Brien, all sweetness and light. The aw shucks residents of Linden Corners seem to be taken from some bucolic utopia as seen in bad TV. The dialog is unbelievably wooden, frought with cliched adolescent phrases and cutesy nicknames. Surprisingly, since the novel is set in the historic and beautiful Hudson Valley, there is no sense of place, no individuality of scene except for an out-of-place windmill; Linden Corners is indistinguishable from Green Acres. The plot is predictable, padded with redundant sentimental events, leading to the enevitable, and welcomed, tragic conclusion. Read this novel at your peril.

5 out of 5 stars Life and Love Found.......2001-05-15

I found Joseph Pittman's writing style to be very compelling. I was drawn into the story immediately, and became friendly with the personalities in the story as soon as they were introduced. Mr. Pittman has an ease of writing that keeps the story moving forward and a style that takes you to the Hudson Valley of upstate New York. While reading I wanted to get into my car and find Linden Corners and the folk who lived there. The story is never predictable, but keeps you moving and waiting to see what will happen next. I highly recommend the adventure and warmth of "Tilting At Windmills" to all.

                              4 out of 5 stars Quite Comprehensive.......2006-03-17

This text offers great details, but I did not rate it as 5 stars because (1) when searching for content, it is difficult to see the key words in the text and (2) the case studies are well selected, but since they are inserted throughout the chapter, it is challenging to determine where the case ends and the author's content begins.

Overall, I would recommend the Jennings text and will keep a copy on my shelf.

This book was assigned to one of my MBA classes. The book itself was a good source of reference not only for my business law class but also to other two classes. The book's language is simple and easy to understand. The only flaw I found about this this book was that some cases were complex and I had to refer to actual law books and regulations. Overall, I recommend this book.
