Book Description
The Tugendhat House in Brno (Czech Republic) was planned and built by Mies van der Rohe from 1928–1930, and is universally regarded not only as one of his masterpieces, but also as one of the most important buildings of European Modern architecture. What makes this monograph particularly fascinating is the fact that it presents previously unpublished photographs belonging to the Tugendhat family. These show the house as it was when it was first lived in. The facade and the roof terrace are, as the architect had envisioned, covered with climbers and creepers, thus making it clear that the architecture of the house and the landscaped garden were conceived as a whole. A representative collection of plans and drawings from Mies van der Rohe’s atelier can also be seen for the first time. Carefully produced photographs of the original furniture in the family’s possession, much of which has never been shown, are also included. Essays by Wolf Tegethoff, Franz Schulze, and Ivo Hammer give a detailed analysis of the significance of the Tugendhat House in the context of Mies van der Rohe’s architecture as a whole, as well as the living concepts of Modern architecture, to which Mies made such a decisive contribution. Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat applies herself to the key question as to how habitable the Tugendhat House was, based on her personal recollections and texts written by her parents.

Book Description
This pictorial history brings to life the breathtaking and often heartbreaking stories of the workers who, with cement and steel, needle and thread, blood, sweat and dreams, built New York City in the twentieth century.
Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives tells the stories of the men and women who built the city--of towering structures and the beam walkers who assembled them; of immigrant youths in factories and women in sweatshops; of longshoremen and typewriter girls; of dock workers and captains of industry. It provides a glimpse of the traditions they carried with them to this country and how they helped create new ones, in the form of labor organizations that provided recent immigrants, often overwhelmed by the intensity of New York life, with a sense of solidarity and security.
Astounding in their own right, the book's photographic images, most drawn from seldom-seen labor movement photographers, are complemented by poignant oral histories, which tell the stories behind the images. Among the extraordinary lives chronicled are those of Philip Keating, who, seven years after a fellow worker photographed him painting the Queensboro Bridge in 1949, plunged to his death from another worksite; William Atkinson, who broke the color bar at Macy's and tells of fighting racism at home after fighting fascism abroad during World War II; and Cynthia Long, who fought gender barriers to become, in the late 1970s, an electrician with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3.
With narratives at the beginning of each section providing historical context, this book brings the past clearly, emotionally, and fascinatingly alive.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful window into a rarely told story.......2001-03-30
The full and rich diversity of New York City is on display here in the carefully selected, organized, and documented photographs. In addition, the authors' introduction provides a very helpful context and explanation of the "culture of solidarity" among working people from different industries, unions, and ethnic backgrounds. It's a wonderful window into the lives of ordinary working New Yorkers, their trials and tribulations, protests and passions, successes and strikes!

Reason
Pombo targets his book at a conservative audience, citing a biblical defense of property rights, reminding readers that the Founders explicitly protected property in the Constitution, and offering occasional (if somewhat superficial) attacks on central planning. He describes how wetlands have been transformed in the public mind and the public law from swamps that breed disease-bearing critters to altars at the environmental church. And he explores the growing "eco-federal"coalition of environmental advocacy groups, government regulatory agencies, and congressional appropriators.
. . . By consistently portraying environmentalists as antagonists, Pombo should have no problem convincing an audience that may agree with him anyway. And by selecting as his co-author Joseph Farah, who worked with Rush Limbaugh on his second book, See, I Told You So, he has found a collaborator well-suited to appeal to readers who are politically engaged but aren't policy wonks.
But there's a troubling blind spot in this book. The explosive growth in the population of the West could never have happened without the massive government water projects that were started during the New Deal. Unlike the eastern United States, where water was plentiful and land scarce, in the West land was cheap and water dear. As DeLong explains in Property Matters, the Homestead Act of 1866 gave away 160-acre parcels of land to anyone who would stake a claim: East of the 100th Meridian, where 40 or more inches of rain fall every year, 160 acres of farm land would easily support a family. In the rain-deprived areas west of the 100th, however, such plots were worthless--unless they were located along a river or lake. Harnessing Western rivers made large- scale agriculture possible and helped support the migration of people from the East and the South. . . . Pombo's book doesn't mention the thorny problems caused by socialized water, a curious oversight, since his Central Valley congressional district would certainly be less populous and less prosperous without it.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2006-07-26
Everyone needs to read this book in order to better counter the rants and raves of the radical (and moderate) enviromental groups and their agenda.
Richard Pombo can write?.......2006-03-24
This book deserves only negative 5 stars but the scale does not go that low.
If you decide to read this book be prepared to fact check every single sentence, because the publisher did not.
Richard Pombo - unbelieveably he is a Congressman from California - is a well known liar. Multiple public articles have proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt - and he has been forced to publically admit to lying about much of what he has written in this book. He has never, ever challenged anyone who called him a liar. In fact Pombo proves that jokes often are based in truth: How do you know if a politican is lying? His lips are moving!
So, in short, don't buy this book, instead, find it at a library (it is probably in the Fiction section). Buying it would only encourage this liar.
Self Centered.......2005-09-30
Are there problems with the Endangered Species Act? Of course. Is the government guilty of using heavy-handed tactics? Of course. But the answers are not going to be found in Richard Pombo's "me first" world either. This book contributes NOTHING to the sensible community debate. Swing back towards the center, Richard. For the sake of all beings, swing back to the center.
Unbalanced, extremist ranting.......2003-05-23
Pombo obviously has no respect for the environment since he wasted numerous trees on this 225 pages of extremist nonsense. He revels in environmental "scares stories", some of which have since been proven to be false and most of which are grossly exaggerated. He never considers the alternate view, such as in what state would our environment be in if not for laws that protect it. Still spraying DDT? Even more extinctions? Clearcutting of national forests? Yosemite and Grand Canyon dammed up reservoirs?
Only those readers who already agree with him would not see this as the ravings of an unbalanced anti-environmentalist lunatic. This is obviously written for the Rush Limbaugh/Ann Coultier crowd, who are not particularly interested in facts and balanced opinions, but only want confirmation of their extremist views.
Ready To Be Scared?.......2000-06-21
This book was incredibly frightening to me. I had no idea of how far the government has gone to take away private land ownership in this country. Now I look at every move my local, state, and federal government does in a new light, and it scares me to death. I'm not an ultra-conservative "wacko" by any means, but I am very concerned about the rapidly disappearing right of private property in this country. Read this book and you'll be concerned too.

AUDIO VERSION CHANGED MY LIFE.......2007-06-06
I started my own business in 1975. In Success Magazine, I found the KISS audio tapes and bought them. There were 8 tapes and each side was 30 minutes and covered a different aspect of sales, i.e., getting appointments by phone, overcoming objections, etc. I listened to them everyday in my car and I was driving hours daily.
My rate of setting appointments made by phone went from 1 or 2 out 10 to 6 or 7 out of 10. My closing ratio became approximately 90 percent. Using all of the wonderful information in the tapes literally changed my life. I have been in business now for 37 years and done nothing but grow. If you can get a hold of these tapes anywhere, buy them. Fred has tons of actually awesome stories to support his teachings.

Book Description
The views generally held about the rise of the factory system in Britain derive from highly distorted accounts of the social consequences of that system—so say the distinguished economic historians whose papers make up this book. The authors offer documentary evidence to support their conclusion that under capitalism the workers, despite long hours and other hardships of factory life, were better off financially, had more opportunities, and led a better life than had been the case before the Industrial Revolution.
Customer Reviews:
what is history.......2002-01-02
I am intrigued by this collection of essays in "Capitalism and the Historians" published in 1954. Professor F. A. Hayek of the University of Chicago USA is the editor with contributions from Louis Hacker, W. H. Hutt and Bertrand de Jouvenel. The topic of discussion is specifically, the "legend of the deterioration of th eposition of the working classes in consequence to the rise of 'capitalism'", and generally, "the widespread aversion to 'capitalism'". On a larger scale, these essays examine what is "history", as apart from "political legend". Professor Ashton attacks a general pessismism and lack of economic sense in the commonly accepted views of the economic developments of the nineteenth century. He opposes the views of Sombart and Schumpeter which write history "as though it its function were simply to exhibit the gradualness of inevitability." Rather, Ashton maintains "that it is from the spontaneous actions and choices of ordinary people that progress springs." Louis M Hacker addresses the same themes as Ashton and discusses the present attitude of American historians toward capitalism. Hacker summarises, "When, therefore, historians learn to treat their materials more sensitively and make corrections on the counts indicated, the popularly accepted notions about profits as exploitation will undergo drastic revision." Bertrand de Jouvenel examines the treatment of capitalism by continental intellectuals. He explains that the modern intelligentsia occupies a similar position as the clerics of Medieval Times although their authority is undermined because they lack the responsibility of the clerics who were themselves part of the community. "The study of the past," writes de Jouvenel, "always bears the imprint of the present views." In the second part of this book, Ashton examines what happened to the standard of life of the British working classes in the late decades of the eighteenth and the early decades of the nineteenth. W H Hutt also examines the British factory system of this period. The report of the "Sadler's Commitee" in 1832 is analyzed. Although this examination and defence of "capitalism" made for extremely interesting reading, I was more impressed with the methods these historians used to extract their view of events and thereby, redefine common misconceptions of an historical period. If you are interested in the early development of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, or in history as a dynamic organism, this book will be interesting to you.
Capitalism not as a "dirty word.".......2000-09-05
Hayek's books are always not easy ones. This book, not unlike other ones, is hard to understand.
If you think the word "capitalism" is a dirty word. Buy this book or Milton Friedman's "Capitalism and Freedom." You will learn much about capitalism and its meanings.
This is a great investigation of the history of business. It teaches you to think differently. You'll become a better historian.
