This book is a delight to read. It's fun to read the western dialect and phrases out loud, and to enjoy an especially creative adaptation of a familiar tale. The artwork is fun too. This is one of our favorites.

          5 out of 5 stars Elfin Magic.......2000-07-23

Featuring a cowboy bootmaker "so poor that even his shadow had holes in it", this country western adaptation of "The Shoemaker and the Elves" spoons out colorful and humorous similes that are highly engaging for the under ten set.

I teach writing to children this age and could see the work of the elves in the eyes of my young writers. The story not only "hornswoggled" the children, but provided invaluable assistance in teaching them about similes and metaphores.

Written so anyone can speak the 'cowpoke' dialect, the elfin magic transforms grown-up readers into professional storytellers.

Tom Curry's dreamy but detailed artwork adds the crowning piece of elfian magic that will leave you pining for more.

5 out of 5 stars Very memorable and inspiring!.......2004-10-12

I read this book to my daughters, ages 6 and 4. Several weeks later when we were visiting my in-laws, my oldest daughter ran up to me holding a "red mare", a small wooden horse that her grandparents had purchased in Sweden. She retold the entire story and then offered to rescue her brother if ever he should be abducted by trolls.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best children's books ever.......2004-02-16

When I think of "good children's books," this is the first one I think of. I gave it to my five-year-old daughter years ago, and I read it to her first-grade class as a parent helper. I've never seen children so entranced, so silent, hanging on every word. Now I'm buying another copy to read to my own classes after I get my teaching credential.

          5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2002-10-11

This is a fantastic story with beautiful illustrations.

I bought it for my daughter when she was five. At the age of twelve it is still a favorite of hers, and for me as well. Since Le Guin has used techniques from oral traditions, it is simply wonderful to read aloud.

I think this is an example of a perfectly written short story. Everything in the story has a purpose. Not a word can be taken away without detracting from the story, and any additions would be superfluous.

This is one of the few books that will not be traded in or given to a library.

5 out of 5 stars Magic! Trolls! A Wonderous Horse! and family love..........1997-12-05

I purchased this book for my son, just because it was written by my favorite author. Although I immediately fell in love with it, I wasn't so sure what my 6 year old son would think of it, but, perhaps for different reasons than me, he insists on having it read to him frequently. Like any classic folktale, it uses a simple style and classic images to present timeless and complicated truths. The illustrations are gorgeous and evoke just the right feelings for the story.

            4 out of 5 stars Introduce a new culture.......2005-09-22

Books that introduce children to new cultures are always welcome. Dreamcatcher does a lovely job of presenting information about the Ojibway way of life. Readers will learn new and interesting facts about them, and will also see some universal similarities. The soft, dreamy illustrations complement the subject matter beautifully. Teachers, this is a great jumping-off point for units on native cultures.

            5 out of 5 stars Dreamcatcher.......2004-09-02

The best multicultural books use a new culture to illuminate familiar and universal themes. This lovely picture book does exactly that, showing gentle family scenes from an Ojibway Indian baby's perspective. The beautiful illustrations in this book radiate warmth and joy. I'd particularly recommend it for young children with a new sibling--the relationship between baby and big sister is especially touching.

            3 out of 5 stars Informational Book.......2003-03-11

On the Ojibwa Islands of the Great Lakes many people wove nets to protect their babies from harmful dreams. They would weave a dream net on a willow hoop. It would look just like a spider web but the net would be woven of twine. Then they stained it red with the juice from the berries. They believed that this would catch the bad dreams like almost like a spider web catches flies. Then the good dreams would drift through the hole in the center of the dream catcher. The parents always told the children to try to dream and try to remember what they dream. They did this because the believed that every dream had a meaning. If you had a bad dream it was though that something bad was going to happen to you or your family. If you had a good dream it was thought that something good was going to happen. I didn't really enjoy this book because it didn't really grab my attention. It had a good story and legend behind it but the way they explained it didn't interest me. I would recommend this book though if you want to find out the meaning behind a dream catcher. ~ Katelyn Carson

4 out of 5 stars Dream Catcher by Audrey Osofsky.......2000-02-25

This is a story of a day in the life of the Ojibway Indians of the Great Lakes. The story is based on the baby of the tribe, whoses sister weaves a dreamcatcher. A dreamcatcher is a net, which is used to catch bad dreams, holding on to them until sunrise when they will be destroyed. This net was made for the Ojibway baby who watches its family through the day as they work and play, lulled into a restful slumber by the dreamatcher.

This is a wonderful story of how this tribe treasured their good dreams as a source of wisdom. It is very captivating for young readers to relate to dreams in this manner, also comparing the games that the children of this culture play. This poetic text uses a rhythm to keep the young reader interested. The beautiful pastel illustrations are used in an impressionistic way to keep the reader in that dream-like feelng.

This book was a gift when my 10 year old was born. It has been a favourite with both boys for very different reasons. The dreamy golden tales appeal to one boy while the darker, meaner tales appeal to the other.
The tales are both familiar and strange and appeal to those who like the rosy endings and to those who find those rosy endings unfit for children or adults.
As the boys have grown, so has the resonance of the tales.
This is a book that wears well for both parent and child.

Amazon.com review of "3-D Human Modeling and Animation, First Edition"

Never forgetting that "the human form is the most valuable and challenging resource in fine art," 3-D Human Modeling and Animation helps make the transition from 2-D to 3-D--working with height, width, and now depth--easier. Student artists and animators learning or expanding their skills for modeling and animating digital humans will find this book a great resource.

Lessons and instruction begin by modeling the feet, progressing upward through the body, and then ending with the head (the head being the most complicated to create). The modeling approach you'll use involves skinning cross-sectional splines and contours, a system that uses a series of curved or straight outlines and then connects them. Students will find the various procedures used here helpful, no matter what software or hardware setup they're using.

In an example on human motion, you consider the movement of clothes on the human body, which tend to move separately--the swing of a skirt as it twirls opposite the human figure, for example. Animate your characters with secondary actions, the book suggests, so that their movements look more realistic and dramatic.

While there is no companion CD-ROM, this book offers plenty of illustrations, step-by-step instructions, and student exercises. Whether you're just learning to model or want to expand beyond your 2-D skills and make the leap into the 3-D arena, you'll find 3-D Human Modeling and Animation a good place to start. --Brooke Gilbert

Topics covered: the basics of modeling, seamless models, how body parts move, visual dynamics (rhythm, tension, direction), composition, directing the viewer's eyes, scene outlines, understanding lighting configurations, and animating humans.

                    Book Description

"3-D Human Modeling and Animation fills a tremendous void that has become even more evident with the successful use of 3-D in movies like Disney's Toy Story. While there has been much written about drawing the human form in relation to art, commercial design, and 2-D cartooning, the subject of 3-D modeling and animation of the human form has been neglected at the same time that the use of 3-D tools has been exploding. It is my judgment that [this] book will become the reference that professional and student artists and animators turn to in order to master one of the most challenging yet exciting subjects to model and animate-the human form." -Nick Pavlovic, CEO, Visual Information Development, Inc., Monrovia, CA

Ideal for graphic designers, artists, and others, 3-D Human Modeling and Animation builds a bridge from traditional figure drawing, painting, and sculpture to the creation and animation of figures using computer technology.

With a step-by-step approach, the book leads readers through the process of modeling human figures, with specific yet flexible techniques that can be applied to many different hardware/software setups. Separate chapters cover different areas of the body, and contain everything readers need to know about proportion, basic design strategies, 3-D construction methods, and other essential information. The final chapters show how to prepare figures for animation and get them up and running-and jumping, walking, turning, and twisting!

Complete with illustrations, helpful exercises, and more, 3-D Human Modeling and Animation opens up a whole new world of creative possibilities to explore.

A word of warning. . .computer graphics books age like milk, not wine. The graphics here are considerably _worse_ than what you'd get out of a consumer grade product like Metacreations Poser-- not to mention 3D Studio or Softimage.

3-D Human Modeling and Animation is a great book for beginners starting in the 3-D field. It gives step by step instructions to model every body part, even down to the finger nail. This book involves spline modeling which is a great tool for modeling organic objects, especially humans. Best is the generality of the book; the book is not software dependant and is very usefull with any software that uses spline modeling.

                        Book Description

This work examines the nature of agrarian contracts. Agricultural land tenancy and farm labor are basic institutions binding the life and work of billions of people in the Third World. Issues of efficiency and equity associated with a particular form of contract--such as sharecropping--are not
merely of academic interest, but have critical bearing on land tenure reform as well as innovations in credit and marketing institutions in agrarian economies. There have been major controversies surrounding the role of land tenure in agricultural and rural development, with much confusion arising
from only partial and separate treatments of land and labor contracts. Through a comprehensive critical survey of existing literature, Hayami and Otsuka present a general theory of agrarian contracts by integrating land and labor contracts. Insights from the scrutiny of agrarian contracts are of
relevance to industrial organization and management in developed economies as well as to the study of these fields.
