The theme of the first Rotterdam International Architecture Biennial was mobility--as it relates to the city and the landscape, and the design culture that comes with it. Held between May and July 2003, the biennial brought together numerous universities, architects, urbanists, spatial planners and designers to swap experiences and discuss new strategies for giving shape to (car) mobility. This unique book shows the results of this international research in its various forms: statistics, photography, text, visual collage and design proposals. These together give a tangible and insightful look at the mobile cultures found in a wide range of cities and countries, from Mexico City, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, to Djakarta, Budapest, the Ruhr Valley, Beirut, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Peking and Holland. The aim of the publication is twofold. On the one hand, to understand infrastructures and motorway culture by studying their different cultural and geographical contexts. On the other, to draw up an agenda for the future, one that establishes the role to be played by various design disciplines. This research and publication endeavor is the fruit of a collaboration between the universities of Wuppertal, Aachen, Berlin, California, Monterrey (Mexico), Tokyo, Hong Kong, Peking, Beirut, Budapest, Bandung and Delft.

Mirroring Norman Bel Geddes Futurama Exhibition (Highways & Horizons) at the 1939 World Fair in New York, the First Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam is a city wide attempt to understand how mobility and its infrastructure are radically transforming everyday life. As a record of the Biennale and the symposium held at the Netherlands Architecture Institute in the Spring 2003, Mobility: A Room with a View is organized as a research project to find new meaning in the generic aspects of modern infrastructure and the local conditions of urban ommunities. The purpose of the book daylights one of the most marginalized space in the history of the twentieth century: the street. Void of nostalgic intention, co-editors Houben & Calabrese collect the work of over 25 academic research projects completed over the past year to build the foundation of a new spatial order that situates itself somewhere between the circumstances of congestion, traffic and sprawl. Professor of Mobility & Urbanism at TU Delft and trained at IUAV in Italy, Luisa Maria Calabrese delivers a sweeping historical survey of postwar architectural visions in the first part of the book that by and large sets up the polemic of the Biennale. As a strategy, Calabrese appropriates past and present realities to inflect the possible outcome of a more immediate, more satisfying future. Debunking the myth of scenic highways, the second part of the book World Avenue visualizes new roadway conditions in 10 different cities while privileging the emergent, the odd and the curious. The final part of the book draws a historical cross-section through the past one hundred years of highway construction in North America and Europe. From Haussmann to Hitler, the historiographic detour exposes hidden paradoxes and contradictions that have led in part to the explosion of modern highway infrastructure.
The First Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam emerges at a critical time for the fields of design: a period where the role of the architect has been relinquished to that of interior decorator or cosmetic surgeon, Calabrese & Houben position architects as influential leaders in the field of urbanism through the paradigm of mobility. Despite the worldwide interiorization of urban living, the editors' visions opens up a new horizon focused on the road as most latent alternative in the city today. Street culture as we know it, is probably more vibrant and more relevant that ever before.
The Rotterdam Architecture Biennale ran from May 1 to September 1, 2003 at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (www.1ab.nl). The exhibition included urban research (World Avenue) projects from Beirut, Jakarta, and Los Angeles as well as design projects (Holland Avenue) from selected universities including Columbia, Berkeley and Toronto. Mobility: A Room with a View (NAI Publishers, 2003) is edited by Francine Houben and Maria Luisa Calabrese with contributions from Jan Van Adrichem, Joerg Retikke, Pierre Bélanger, Odile Odecq and Paul Meurs.

If you want to learn something more than mechanical reproduction, this is the book for you........2006-03-13
This was/is my 4th book on the subject. The others were rated highly, but this is the first one that truly teaches the essence/spirit of the style rather than simple mechanics. The mechanics are there too, but issues pertaining to compostiton, energy and spirit are covered, and taught in a way that allows you to creatively produce your own paintings instead of merely replicating someone else's. If you want to make this style creatively your own, this book is the best!!! But if you're more interested in being told step by step directions, without explanation, (like a Microsoft manual) there are others that do that.

This book is so-so when it comes to teaching brush painting.
The author is good with flowers and leaves. However, she's not very strong when it comes to any other subjects. This book will not work as your only book on the subject. Animals and humans especially are not the author's forte and end up looking off somehow.
As an introduction, however, it isn't too bad. I would recommend any book by Lucy Wang and The Simple Art of Chinese Painting by Qu Lei Lei in addition and over this book.

this title is superb in the presentation of the chinese brush painting to the beginer artist. though a little un organized and somewhat free falling in the degree of control expected from the student it stresses the need of practice and give numerouse examples of art subjects to be copied as part of the learning process.

good text from a teacher's point of view.......2006-05-31
I liked this text and might adopt it for my classes. Economics is not an easy subject but Prof. McEachern's text is clearly written. The end of chapter summary of key ideas help to clarify what the chapter was about. The problems and exercises are rigorous, but within reach of anyone who has had algebra.
The case studies bring a real world aspect to the material.

This book is terrible. The author is for one thing extremely dull. Worst though is the questions he expects you to answer at the end of most chapters. The examples he gives while reading the chapter are totally different from the questions he asks at the end of the chapters. As a result of this you are left asking yourself, when the hell did we do this?????? To make matters worse their is no answer key to any of this, so even if you attempt to answer the questions, you will never even know if you did them right or not! Stay away from this book if possible, take a teacher who uses another book, because this book is very poor. In my class, probably half dropped because of this!

A great introduction to macroeconomic theory.......1998-09-07
In comparison with other macroeconomic texts around it should get 5 stars. It starts with a historical perspective of the crisis in economics at the time of Keynes, setting the picture for why anyone bothered to invent macroeconomics in the first place. It then rapidly proceeds to introduce the major schools of macroeconomics and to develop the relevant ideas and models. It is an ideal introduction for the interested or serious student and manages to be exciting as well as fairly comprehensive. If you're taking an introductory macroeconomics course, get this book instead of your text. If you're coming from outside the economics profession and have a mind of your own, this ones for you.

Very basic information. This book is for the beginner just learning the ropes about eBay. If you have been using the site for some time now, then you know just as much as whats in this book.
The resources for sellers to find "wholesale" products were terrible. The sites basically sell junk or overpriced refurbs.

As consumers, suppliers, competitors, and capital users, the 142 developing countries in the world are of major and growing importance to more than 140,000 Western managers who do business with the Third World on a daily basis, often as partners in strategic alliances. Yet, other than theoretical articles in the economic development literature, there are few sources to which these managers, faced with a very different and difficult business environment, can turn. Now, building on 25 years as a teacher, researcher, and advisor to companies, governments, and international agencies in developing nations, James Austin presents the most complete and comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of the Third World business environment available today.
Seemingly insurmountable obstacles confront a Western company setting up operations in a Third World country: governmental controls, rampant inflation and devaluation, cumbersome bureaucratic procedures for obtaining import licenses, skill scarcity, difficulties with training new employees in new technology -- and not least, the possibility that the entire venture could go up in the flames of a revolution. Through his lucid Environmental Analysis Framework -- a powerful, field-tested analytical tool -- Austin first systematically and masterfully examines these economic, political, cultural, and demographic factors at the international, national, industry, and company levels. The book is an excellent reference to plan a company's strategy to enter 142 countries.The strongest edge is the concentrated case studies that flows in the book ingenuinely. The book highlights the big resemblance in the economic side between most of the developing countries and it highlights the big variation in political systems affecting all other activities. Demographic factors are well explored in addition to their effect. It's really compulsory before any firm should plan to step in 142 countries.
