Book Description
The modern hotel not only offers a place to sleep, but, through its design, amenities and sense of theater, it also provides its guests with the ultimate escapist experience. This book combines architecture, interior design, photography, film, and works of art to show just how varied and dynamic international hotels can be today.
Examining over thirty real and conceptual examples, and complemented by an authoritative text and stunning photography, this book provides a compelling answer to the question, "What is the purpose of the modern hotel?" From The Venetian in Las Vegas, an outstanding example of the gambling capital's new generation of scenographic hotels, to the sail-shaped, "seven-star" Burj-al-Arab fantasy in Dubai, the designs are fully explored. The marketing of these hotels, and the cross-fertilization of hotel-design principles with those of other industries, is also covered. With the inclusion of plans and computer renderings, this book is essential reading for designers, architects, design-conscious travelers, and business people alike.

New Hotels for Global Nomads.......2003-03-14
Traditional hotels defy the reality of transience, offering a reassurance to weary travelers that they'll enjoy the familiar comforts of home. One pities anyone whose idea of domestic bliss is a Ramada Inn. This catalogue of an exhibition running through March 2 at the Cooper-Hewitt in New York, celebrates a fresh approach that puts chic ahead of comfort, and makes every guest realize she isn't in Kansas anymore. It intersperses W Hotels and the properties of Ian Schraeger and Andre Balasz with blue-sky projects that--if realized--might make you wish you had stayed home. That's especially true of one that was built--Jean Nouvel's hotel in Lucerne--where every ceiling is silkscreened with a movie still that could inspire nightmares. Maybe that Ramada wasn't so bad, after all. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

Book Description
These superb, painterly photographs explore the dark side of the sexual arena. Here de Sade's philosophy encounters essential 21st century BDSM; dripping lust meets sweet agony. China Hamilton's masterful black and white photography captures a shadowy world apart and perhaps timid readers should think twice before ordering.
Book Description
A black person is taken aback when a stranger uses his first name. - A white person fails to recognize a black colleague outside the office. - A black executive is followed around a department store and then can't get a taxi to stop for her. - A white person comments in amazement on how articulate an Ivy Leaque professional is-a black Harvard graduate. Despite the progress our country has made since the civil rights movement, we live in separate worlds. Although people of different races work together, go to school together, live in integrated neighborhoods, and have developed long lasting friendships, we're still undeniably divided. Why? Ignorance. In this fast, funny, smart and forthright book, New York Times reporter Lena Williams tells it like it is. Writing from her own experiences and from what she has learned through conducting focus groups of blacks and whites all over the country, Williams opens our eyes to the annoying things we do and explains what they mean and how to avoid them. If you've ever noticed these sights-and especially if you haven't- you'll find It's the Little Things an eye opener, a delight, and an important bridge between our separated cultures.
Customer Reviews:
Has grown on me slowly.......2007-06-20
Firstly, this is a well-written book. It reads smoothly without feeling as if it was written at a 4th-grade reading level. The first few chapters grabbed me, but gradually I found myself angry at what appeared to be an outright bashing of whites -- and there were certainly those moments. But, although the book wasn't as balanced as it should have been, nor dispersed the criticism it did contain more evenly throughout (instead of saving the white replies for one chapter in the back), the book does have its merits.
I read this book to get the black perspective and that's what I got. It may not always be fair or right, but it's there, and my eyes were opened.
It doesn't always matter whether someone is correct in their beliefs. Sometimes it just matters to know what those beliefs are.
Now, I would love to see a book that fills the void this one left. If Lena Williams can voice her gripes towards some of her white peeves, then let's have one that evens the playing field by truly discussing the black counterparts instead of brushing by them in one token chapter. (Examples? Black people talking and answering cell phones in the movies, walking in the street in front of cars like they own the concrete, mumbling derisive comments under breath when passed on the street, etc.)
In the meantime, I will continue to live out the lessons I've learned here. Instead of avoiding eye contact with people, I make a point now to gaze a split second longer to catch their glimpse and give a friendly nod. I go to the one black furniture salesman instead of the sea of white ones. I take a few extra seconds at the cash register to say something friendly in order to do what little I can to bridge the gap that someone else might have wedged in place.
On the other hand..........2006-09-24
I was sort of shocked to read all the negative reviews of this book. I read it recently and really liked it.
No, her defense of white people is not especially strident or lengthy. Why would it be? As a white woman reading the book, the information about african-american culture was the more interesting to me anyway. I already know that lots of white people don't like, for example, that if someone accuses you of racism and is proved wrong you never get an apology. I didn't know anything about white women's hair being an issue.
The information mostly is anecdotal, but conversations seem to be the best way to get it. I can't imagine that any sort of survey would get honest answers.
Anyhow, I learned a lot. I'm tempted to write her a note and say that I would be happy to participate in a focus group for a followup book.
Largely anecdotal.......2006-09-10
I did find out more about racial perceptions that are very rarely discussed. I thought there would be more rigorous research, but it is mainly a series of interracial (and interesting) conversations interlaced with the author's personal experiences, which are eye-opening.
Reality.......2006-08-01
This book encompasses various experiences from invidivuals who have expereinced racism first handedly. While racism has been demonstrated by society as a struggle between blacks and whites, but other cultures have experienced racism in the United States. This book includes different ethnic groups however the two dominating racial groups are blacks and whites. This is a must read book for all who wants to make a difference in society and make changes to the already damaging United States.
Thought Provoking Read.......2006-02-15
Sometimes it is good to just vent. This is what Lena Williams does here, and this book should be taken as an individual's point of view. It would have been a real achievement, however, if she'd got/let/found white people to speak as frankly as she does. Aside from one white female postal worker, she only seems to have found elite whites to speak to -- oh, a few Asians and Hispanics at the end -- also with similarly high stations in life.
Instead, she drew from her own circles -- people who work at The New York Times, who attended private universities. Who attended universities, period. If she'd talked to white ethnic working class people -- and can I please put in here, that I hate being labeled white as much as she finds fault with the various terms for her own race -- she would have found some equally provocative, possibly offensive, but essential truths to match her own deeply felt reactions to the America she was born into.
While I mostly enjoyed this and read it without offense, I was amazed at the solipsism she is at no pains to accuse white folks of. For example -- she quotes her niece saying that white Americans are so threatened by the "browning" of America, that they're importing blond slavic types from Eastern Europe. Excuse me -- but does this educated young woman know what's been going on in the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries in recent years? Is she that ignorant and self-centered? If Ms. Williams had shown this as an example of paranoia -- O.K., but she seems to support it as a legitimate point of view.
The assumption is also made that the playing field in America is level for non-blacks, that we are all Kennedys and Bushes, rife with golf club connections and entre into elite circles. America is full of poor, underclass people, immigrant and otherwise. The white elite are never hurt by affirmative action programs, which is why they seldom complain of them -- poor whites and ethnic immigrants are, which is why they have historically been the most reactionary racist.
I am a veteran of many affirmative action companies and have seen some pretty interesting things. I also have lived as a minority in darker-skinned ethnic neighborhoods and don't see any of my experiences reflected here.
If she'd made an effort to get honest answers from people, she would have got a more interesting and resonant story. As it was, I think she talked to proper, privileged white people who haven't been on the underside of race relations -- for example, a crime victim? Armed services people? Policemen of all races? She avoids the really tough stuff, and focuses on lint-picking. Too bad. An opportunity wasted.

Customer Reviews:
A very helpful book in this day and age.......2005-10-27
With soaring gas prices and heating costs, I wanted to find ways I can make my home more efficient and SAVE money, too. This book has lots of ideas and I am recommending it. It is useful and informative and easy to understand.
Who Knew?.......2005-08-10
First of all Seo is hilarious. I love the tongue in cheek approach saving the ecosystem and looking great while doing it.
On a serious note: This is a great book just on the level of helping you get organized about a renovation, clean-up or decoration project. It is full of great and easy ideas, presented in an entertaining way and well-organized. I am definitely not a hardcore eco-activist, but that's great thing about the book. Danny's suggestions are about doing things you were already going to do, but doing them right.
Well Balanced.......2005-08-08
Just as one of the implicit themes in this book is keeping everything well balanced, the book too, is well balanced. Mr. Seo manages to brew a richly roasted blend of humor, sensible ideas, updated recycling facts and most importantly, readability. As a person who has long struggled with ADD, a book that can keep my attention is a rare find. I was also surprised to discover that many things I was taught about recycling and the environment are simply no longer true. It certainly opened my eyes more and taught this old monkey some new tricks.
Danny Seo = Brilliant.......2005-08-08
Danny Seo has the rare gift of making daunting tasks seem possible, even easy. This book has so many idea gems that have changed my life - inspiring me to make both small and major changes in how I interact with the environment and my immediate surroundings. I eagerly await his next book as I'm due for more inspiration.
Great tips for a stylish new home!.......2005-06-23
This book is full of useful tips on how to incorporate this lifestyle into your own home. Mr. Seo offers suggestions and tips that allow someone to bring eco-living into their life on a small scale or a larger scale depending on your desire. I tried out some of the suggestions with my family and they loved it!! It is a great start to turning my home into a stylish eco environment - on a budget no less! Thanks for the great ideas!
Book Description
You can't make money on eBay unless you've got stuff to sell. Here's how (and where) to get it.
The chief concerns of any retail operation are where to get inventory and how to get the best prices and terms. These are ongoing business challenges that apply as much to eBay sellers as to traditional retailers. eBay Inventory the Smart Way is the first book to look exclusively at the most profitable strategies for finding reliable suppliers and marketable products. Readers will learn how to:
* form relationships with wholesalers and obtain dealer status * finance purchases, manage inventory better, and use just-in-time delivery strategies * increase profits with drop shipping and co-op advertising * deal directly with manufacturers and wholesalers, "work" trade shows, and take advantage of trade organizations * research product sales potential, buy closeout merchandise, and tap into pawnbrokers' inventories * and even buy inventory on eBay
eBay Inventory the Smart Way covers more than 25 inventory sources and tells how to profit from each. Whether buying in bulk, sourcing one item at a time, or establishing a powerful inventory management system, both established online retailers and newcomers will find this book indispensable.
Customer Reviews:
Helps put a specific perspective on eBay business, but not much to work with........2007-04-25
This book is a decent overall, 1000 ft view of options for acquiring inventory to sell on eBay. It presents the 'you should consider' rather than the 'step one, step two', which is fair seeing that no one answer can fit all.
Granted, this wasn't intended to give you a list of manufacturers, wholesalers, or even a comprehensive list of online services; but just when you think something tangible (as opposed to purely conceptual) is about to appear on the next page, you get a 'not within the scope of this book' or 'buy our other book XYZ for that info' Also be warned of the DOBA ads threaded throughout this book (one of the authors is the CEO)
One 'tangible' piece of info I couldve used is in the area of importing. The book goes into the general process of working with manufacturers and wholesalers. You'd think getting the inventory is a considerable aspect of managing inventory, however the book simply recommends contacting a customs broker and stops. Then points to another one of their books for $24.95.
On top of it all, there had to have been at least 50 pages in this book created out of pure repetition. There were a number of places I thought I had reread, only to notice it had been covered multiple times. The unorthodox organization of the book helped lead to this, fat margins, etc, but I'm sure its no accident..a 250 pager sells more copies.
Decent book, but not well executed. I definitely will not consider any other publication in the series.
Useless Resources - Waste Money and Time .......2006-04-22
All the sources show in this book are easily found in website and those sources are not really will help you maximize your profit because most of the sources you need to pay monthly fees. Better think twice when you purchase this book, I already waste my time and money to own this book. Good luck on you
Great Resource.......2006-04-11
I found this book to be an extremely useful resource. It is an easy read and walks you through every aspect of finding the right supply for your business. I would recommend the book to every small business owner.
What More Could I ask For..........2006-04-07
This book is amazing due to one reason and one reason alone...Simplicity...it doesn't attempt to overstate the obvious or reinvent the wheel...it teaches you in simple terms how to effectively sell online and make money...that's it...fast and simple.
A Must Have for Newbies and Vets Alike.......2006-04-07
Having read other books in the "eBay the Smart Way" series, I knew that this would be an easy read.
I've sourced product for my eBay business several different ways, and Sinclair & Hanks lay the business out plain and simple in a very easy-to-understand manner.
As a businessman, I'm always on the lookout for new and viable product sources. But when you discover something new, you don't ever want to go in looking like the "new kid on the block." This book will give you the knowledge needed to help prevent that, and stave off the first time jitters so you can investigate new sources with confidence.
I expect this book will be one that I find myself referring to often.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for Beginners.......2006-04-07
I received this as a gift. Being that I've been an eBay PowerSeller on several different accounts, I honestly didn't think I'd learn much from this.
I might have simply put the book down after the first chapter, but one thing I can say about Joseph Sinclair is that he is very easy to read. I ended up reading nearly everything in there. And even though I already knew most of what's in there, I did end up learning quite a bit, and was able to take a new perspective on everything that I already knew.
Overall, I'd say this book is best for those new to selling on eBay, but even the most hardened eBay vets will be able to grab scraps of goodness from it.
eBay Business the Smart Way: Maximize Your Profits on the Web's #1 Auction Site.......2006-01-15
I learned quite a few tips from this book. I took his advice on photographs for auctions. I researched some of the close out web sites he listed. I am also doing some market research on my own right now. I am now what he calls a "picker". Learning as I grow my store. I took his advice on whether or not to start a website. Got my store going like he said. This is my new store. I have grossed over $300 in less than 2 weeks, and I am hoping to add a few zeros to that number.

Useless, Notthing Useful if you are a Serious Seller on eBay.......2005-12-10
Plain useless, nothing useful for those who are serious about selling on eBay. Take it from some one who is Power Seller in Gold Tier and is serious about listening to those who know anything about eBay. Lets see what this book does right and wrong.
Pros:
1. Author has captured lot of diverse ideas on what to do. Unfortunately most of these are common knowledge and appears to be captures from common discussion forums on eBay (in fact since the book has been written if you look you will find more ideas) and expanded simple one liner ideas into chapters for this book.
Cons:
1. There are no examples on how to implement different common sense ideas. This points to either lack of author's knowledge or reluctance to share his experience. Take a simple example - author states how to write CVS file and how important these files are in big words but there is no explanation of where these files are used or how! (ofcourse all pro knows how and you can search more it in discuss forums). Every chapter is full of such words with no examples.
2. Full of references to author's other books. Why do you write a book if you just want others to buy other books from you!
3. This book is at best collection of tactics with no attention to any strategic model for a business. In my opinion, eBay business can't run without a strategic business model. There is a book by Wingo which does a good job of presenting how an eBay business can be built around a few solid models. Unfortunately I doubt author of this book has any idea of what a business model means.
4. Author thinks he is an expert just because he knows a few tricks.
I feel like I wasted my money and time on this book. There are better books out there than this one. I have learnt my lesson. You should always read at least one or two sections of a book before buying it. There are plenty of folks out there who think they know a lot and would waste their and your time by writing a book.
Don't book publishers have spellcheck?.......2005-04-20
I found the excessive number of typos, punctuation and grammatical errors in this book very distracting. I am astounded this book publisher has not even bothered to do the simplest of spell-checks before sending this book to print. There seemed to be an average of AT LEAST one grammatical or spelling error A PAGE. A simple software program would have caught the majority of these errors. Here are some actual examples: "managemenet, mangement, a advisor, an physically, lucreative, conscentrate" (the list goes on, and on, and on).
Maybe I'm being a bit too hard on the author and publisher, but these mistakes, combined with major content omissions and the amount of fluff found in this book, give me the impression that it was written in about a week and a half. As some of the other readers pointed out, I'm not even convinced this guy has REALLY sold on eBay. Something tells me he's just studied it.
What I found most helpful about this book were the numerous internet links Sinclair has included, as wells as many of his small business-related recommendations, such as his suggestion to hire an independent contractor, rather than an employee for tax & liability purposes. He did a good job filtering out the eBay basics that would have bored seasoned eBay retailers.
My thanks to Sinclair for reinforcing the idea of customer service. Far too many eBay sellers are seriously lacking in this department these days, making a bad impression that hurts the rest of us.
Only for full-time eBay sellers.......2005-04-02
A good book to read if you are going to run a full-time eBay business. It does not help much for the average seller or buyer. A lot of white space greatly expands the size of this book.
After reading the top eBay books, below are my recommendations:
---Beginner with eBay and computers---
1. The Official eBay Bible
---eBay Seller---
1. Sell it on eBay
2. eBay Hacks
---Full-Time eBay Business (not for the casual seller)---
1. eBay Strategies
2. eBay Business the Smart Way

Great quick-reference guide for all business people.......2000-03-29
I found this guide to be a great resource for a variety of business needs. The cover of the book refers to it as a great reference for the CFO and the like. I want to expand that to say it is a great quick-reference book for all business people. Whether you're in entry-level sales, middle management, or executive level, you need to understand the financial basis for each decision. This book allows even a financial novice to quickly get enough information to intelligently approach financial issues.
