Lots of noise for about almost nothing.
I have high hope for this one, but it don't deliver.
Book Description
This trenchant re-examination of minimalism in architecture helps deepen our understanding of a style as diverse as the artists who practice it.
What is minimalism? Or, more specifically, what isn't? In this fascinating aesthetic voyage three experts in the field of architecture and art history trace the development of minimalism as a style and offer perspectives on the directions the movement is taking as it morphs toward the future. In double-page spreads filled with color photographs of the most innovative minimalist projects, this book illustrates three principal movements: the traditional, as practiced by Herzo & de Meuron, Peter Zumthor, Tadao Ando; the ambiguous, in which architects not commonly associated with minimalism, such as OMA or Zaha Hadid, use it for specific projects; and the subversive, which appropriates minimalist concepts across a variety of new fields. Coupled with an historical analysis of the relationship between minimalism in architecture to its appearance in art, the book examines minimalism as a paradigm for modern architecture.

Very Well-Done Book.......2003-12-30
Despite this book's moderate size (175 pages only), it is a very well-done book with amples of photographs; where appropriate building plan, architects' contact information; bibliography; author biographies, illustration credits (not in any particular order). Unlike some architecture books which emphasise merely upon the visuals, this book is rather cerebral trying to define what "minimalism" is. In the end, it doesn't provide us with a definitive answer but it raises more questions in helping us to categorise the kind of minimalism that we think we belong to. Here, minimalism is separated into essential minimalism (transposing Modernism's "less is more" to "least is most", reductive composition with usage of industrial materials, & inward looking), meta-minimalism (appropriation "minimalism"-s formal language whilst cultivating it for their own aims), & trans-minimalism (as quoted, theoretical speculation about an architecture which would allow itself to be inspired not by the forms but by the concepts of Minimal Art, taking its external environment into context as a sum of its parts). Here, acknowledged minimalist architects are omitted such as John Pawson & Campo Baeza. Rather, architects such as OMA, Herzog & de Meuron (cheekily called the enfant terrible of "minimalist architecture" for their loose interpretation of such discipline & only been used on some of their works), Zaha Hadid, Shigeru Ban, Jose Rafel Moneo Arquitecto, Diener & Diener Architekten & the list continues. Here, we are brought to the attention that there is an irony in minimalism where its original intention to deviate from consumerism is used subsequently by Prada, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani to market their products. As minimalism is going mainstream, Prada is now engaging service of OMA to redefine minimalism & thus, individualise its brand from other brand offerings. This is one of those books that I enjoy reading again & again. Highly recommended & a definitive collection if you are an architecture enthusiast.
Book Description
As an architectural aesthetic, minimalism has influenced not only homeowners' residential designs, but also commercial spaces.By expressing fewer ideas, it is possible to emphasize them more strongly. The admirer's attention is not divided among secondary and tertiary distraction, but remains focused on the fundamental role of the space itself, be it a residential living room, an expansive sports center, a homeowner's private study, a multi-purpose educational space, or anything else. New Minimalist Architecture looks at 21 such spaces from around the world, each of which reflects the most inspired uses of minimalism in architecture today.
Book Description
The absence of superfluous elements and the search for the greatest refinement in architecture and interior design are the premises of the diverse proposals presented in this volume. Pure geometric forms, clear surfaces, repetition and a minimum number of compositional elements are the predominant aesthetic obsessions that can be observed in these works. This book offers practical examples and creative ideas for those seeking to create a home environment in line with one of the most important maxims of the century: Less is More.
Book Description
This book is a decorative painter's dream: a complete course in the basic techniques of realistic painting! They'll learn about form, values and color--the building blocks of realism--while painting six fun, attractive projects. Patti DeRenzo, CDA, makes it easy by sharing her special "acrylic blending" technique that makes an acrylic painting look like it was done in oil, with the same softly rounded edges and refined gradation of values so common to oil paintings. They'll learn how to: * Blend acrylic paints with special worksheets and exercises * Mix values and use a value placement map (a pattern showing the exact placement of the light, medium and dark values) * Glaze in highlights, shines and accent colors * Paint shadows and reflected light DeRenzo also shows how to paint such textures as metal, porcelain, glass and fabric in projects that range from beginning through advanced.

Book Description
Directing & Producing for Television provides readers with the tools they need to help them direct and produce efficiently in a variety of settings. It is a vital resource that is based on the author's own experience in the industry and in university settings, where he found that students are adept at handling equipment but often lack actual production technique. This text addresses those critical details and outlines the demands of each format.
The second edition has been significantly updated to reflect recent changes in common industry practice, as well as new camera, lighting and editing technologies. A new review section has been added to each chapter to reinforce students' understanding of the material and allow beginning professionals to work with the material most pertinent to their needs.
The emphasis is on multiple camera television, although serious considerations is given to single camera production in those formats where single camera production is the predominant production technique (for example, documentaries and commercials/PSAs).
Hands-on approach based on author's experience as a TV director
Focuses on the production techniques
Updated to include all the latest industry practices for all formats

Another old book in a fresh new cover.......2007-07-08
A waste of paper. This book is old info and lots of useless filler. IMO, almost completely uselss. Don't waste your time and money.
Very clear and precise for the unexperienced tv professional.......2005-01-21
As a first time TV show co-producer, I wanted a simple approach on learning the basics of TV directing and producing. This book has given me everything I needed to start understanding the technical aspects of the business. Now I can express my ideas more clearly to the show director and the crew, and even though this is not my primary career this book has made easier my introduction in the business.
Easy to read and broad in its focus.......2001-11-30
First and perhaps most important, this book is easy to read. It doesn't talk about technical things, but instead goes right to the heart of the matter: what you have to know if you're going to direct or produce a program. It also covers a broad range of shows--almost every format except sports and game shows. For the most part it describes multiple camera television directing, but that's used as a basis for understanding single camera TV. And there are chapters in which single camera television plays a significant role, most notably when Cury goes into documentary and PSA directing. I particularly liked the "who's who" at the facility, which covers the functions of those who work in television--from the executive producer to talent.
¡Excellent Book For People Interested in TV Production!.......2001-01-05
After reading this book, I have become a better producer and a better person. This book can help anyone from a student to a BIG TIME director. It is very clear in explaining the routine and features to help your show come together. A++
Book Description
In her latest book, award-winning scientist and activist Dr. Vandana Shiva argues that genetic engineering and the cloning of organisms, far from being socially useful, are "the ultimate expression of the commercialization of science and the commodification of nature."
"In the era of genetic engineering and patents, life itself is being colonized," says Shiva. She describes the hidden history of genetically engineered organisms, from Herman the transgenic dairy bull, to Tracy, the genetically engineered sheep that "lays golden eggs."
Customer Reviews:
An important introduction to the global threat to biodiversity.......2005-11-08
Vandana Shiva has become one of the most outspoken defenders of biodiversity and the commons, persistently working to advance the public understanding of a complicated history of corporate and legislative decisions that have changed the landscape of our lives and the lives of people the world over. She has contributed to a vital dialogue about the effects of globalization and the silent tragedies that are occuring every day because of strange business practices and the relentless politics of the new manifest destiny. "Biopiracy: The Plunder of Nature and Knowledge" is a succinct and accessible introduction to the issue of patents and corporate control of the natural world. Shiva is an articulate educator who writes about the difficult and often unspoken history of corporate exploitation of the knowledge of non-Western cultures. By arguing vehemently for the preservation of the farmer's right to save seeds, as well as local rights to ecological and historically tested uses of the natural world, Shiva outlines an ethical path for movement forward and for responding proactively to unfair business practices. I read this book in the context of a larger look at the world's food supply from an ecological and political perspective, but it speaks to a wide audience and can reach far in spreading truth about what is happening in our world - much of which is not getting reported in the mainstream media.
Passionate writing about an important global subject.......2005-02-11
Shiva takes on globalization and the overall anthropocentric view of the world's powers with an in depth look at how Intellectual Property Rights have been stripped from the commons into the hands of multinational governments and companies. Although the writing is sensational, the feelings run deep in the developing world. Acknowledgment of these feelings is an important step in the realization that the Western World has infringed on human rights and ecological balance. The conclusion that placing value in the diversity of cultures and in biodiversity can lead to a more peaceful world if IPR's are left out of private pockets should not be taken lightly.
A sharp warning cry of alarm.......2003-02-14
Biopiracy by physicist, ecologist, and environmental activist Vandana Shiva is a harsh but perceptive survey and analysis of the expansion of population pressures on the environment, and more importantly, the technological advances which have been made and which seemingly have begun to dominate and shape life itself, as well as the process by which life is generated. A timely and critically important contribution to environmental policy discussions, Biopiracy is recommended as a sharp warning cry of alarm at where humanity's current tendency to pollute and put the dollar first can lead, as well as the damage that modern trends have down to traditional ways of life, -- especially among native peoples.
hard to say really.......2001-11-05
i didnt really like this book as much as stolen harvest. it was hard to read and kind of boring, but i learned alot and i appreciate the effort i put into reading it. but it didnt suck me in like stolen harvest, so im only gonna give it 3 stars.. its average.
A powerful theme that is let down by sensationalist writing.......2001-10-17
Amidst all the tirade and rhetoric, cold hard truths emerge: the way IPRs are framed, especially those pertaining to the biotechnology field, is biased towards the interests of multinational corporate entities, and that the current mechanistic gene-centric paradigm in the "life" sciences ignores holistic perspectives of lifeforms and nature which are useful in their own way. While the urgency and potency of the message is not in doubt, the presentation of the content, with all the sidetracks and rambling discourses, leaves much to be desired. Read this book with an open mind, don't take everything in it too seriously, and look up alternative sources of information as well.

How can you successfully sell to a retail chainstore? Retail Detailed will aid salespeople and manufacturers to better understand and sell more products to the chain store buyer.
Customer Reviews:
Blunt and to the point...Just the way Buyer's will be........2006-01-02
This book is written in the concversational style of Merrill Lehrer, he writes as if he is speaking, maybe even lecturing you about the hard truths of selling your product(s) to the Buyer of a large retail chain. Although, at times, more details would have been good, early on you get the drift. You need the buyers and the buyers don;t want you to think that they also need you but if your product is "hot" then they will need you just as much.
There's a lot of tricky business in selling to retail chains nowadays. Once apon a time, if a store purchased your product then that was the end of it. The onus to sell the product to the consumer was then upon the store...this is not the case in the present day.
Lehrer is blunt. He explains whhat you need to be, what you need to do and also what to look out for (eg. a retailer asking for your best price where no rebates, etc are taken into account...make sure you have that in writing or you may be charged for advertising, etc).
At under 200 pages it is an easy, quick read with some real gems of information in there!
Informative & Down-to-earth.......2005-10-26
Merill has done a good job on a topic that's receives very little coverage in the publishing world. The book is worth the money because it touches on most of the critical issues that needs to be covered in order to establish/strengthen business relationship between manufacturers/distributors & chain store buyers.
Two ways in which this book can be further enhanced, if there is going to be a revised edition someday:
1. Some topics, like planograms, needs a slightly more indepth coverage.
2. Merrill writes as he speaks; which is mostly good, but sometimes it's hard to follow. I think the editors might like to work on rephrasing some of the content.
Overall, this is a fantastic buy.
Retail Detailed.......2003-02-22
In my years of selling I have taken sales courses and have read many sales management books. Most have spoken on things like features and benefits, or how to close the sale. Others have given me tips on scheduling my time. Merrill's book has brought to light an issue all sales people need to understand, that is, what is important to the buyer. Seldom does the average salesperson understand what it takes to be on the other side of the desk. This book has a great deal of insight into the analysis that a buyer goes through to maintain their assortment. My advice is to take this book and understand the process the buyer will be going through prior to making your next presentation.

Informative, detailed and fun to read.......2002-12-11
This was so much fun to read. I've met Merrill Lehrer at a conference and his sense of humor is in this book. It's rare for the customer to tell us sales types how to be more effective, but that's just what he does here. Frankly, Merrill confirms many of my suspicions and revealed all kinds of things that have changed the way I approach my retail accounts.
I've been selling to major and minor retailers for over 20 years and didn't think that I could be taught too much more about the ways of the retailer. I now work for a consumer goods manufacturer, but I've been a manufacturers rep in a previous position too, and I've called on the Targets, Wal-Marts, and a bunch of smaller regional/local players. So I didn't think I could learn too much. Fortunately, this book went the distance for me and did offer some great guidance. I know that he aimed to put sales people into the retailer's head, and he does show you their point of view. I'm now using different language and approaching my customers differently and I can tell you that they've noticed it.
This is an easy read--I quickly ran through it on a road trip--and I recommend it to you. I'm surprised that a retailer would offer up all this advice, but I'm glad he did.
Business is very tough. This delightful book has helped me to communicate better, understand the retailers intracacies and I know it's given me an edge over my competition.

Book Description
Many of the stereotypes about Scotland and the Scots contradict the modern reality. The Scotland in brochures and travel guides--castles, romance, and battle sites--means little to most scots, who live in modern urban centers. In the spring of a political and cultural Renaissance, the Scots are faced with the challenge of redefining themselves. Like the constant flow of weather and seasons, change is the only certainty in Scotland. Filled with insightful interviews and anecdotes, practical tips and useful information, Culture Shock! Scotland looks beyond the stereotypes and provides a fresh and exciting perspective on this magical northern land.

An Excelent Overview of Scotland.......2003-01-27
I read this book in April of 2002 before going to Scotland for ten days on business and pleasure. Please pardon the lack of detail in this review, since it has been a year. It gave me a good foundation for understanding many aspects of Scottish society and history. I did not want to read a simple tourist reference guide about the attractions of Scotland-I desired to know more about the people and culture. It turned out to be a terrific book was for me.
Author, Jamie Grant, touches uses his "Guide to Customs and Etiquette" to describe history, stereotypes and the nature of the people, "fitting in", doing business, arts & entertainment, food & drink, the outdoors, The Highlands, and Do's and Don't. His humor makes helps to make an already interesting book fresh.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone going to Scotland who wants to get a comprehensive overview of Scotland, especially if it is their first time. I learned a lot from it.
