Book Description
New Organic Architecture is a manifesto for building in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and kinder to the environment. It illuminates key themes of organic architects, their sources of inspiration, the roots and concepts behind the style, and the environmental challenges to be met. The organic approach to architecture has an illustrious history, from Celtic design, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, to the work of Antoni Gaudí and Frank Lloyd Wright. Today there is a response to a new age of information and ecology; architects are seeking to change the relationship between buildings and the natural environment. In the first part of his book, David Pearson provides a history and assessment of organic architecture. The second part comprises statements from thirty architects from around the world whose work is based on natural or curvilinear forms rather than the straight-line geometrics of modernism. Each statement is accompanied by full-color illustrations of one or several of the architects' built projects.
Customer Reviews:
Organic Life.......2007-08-26
It is very difficult to find books or articles regading organic architecture. The David's book is very complete and update. The research to find World wide examples is a great source of inspiration and understanding.
the defiant wave.......2007-04-05
Well, 1st of all, this is a beautiful and amazing compendium of range and depth of an international movement flowing over our globe, the organic school of architecture. That, for many; lived only in the hearts and lives of Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruce Goff, the precursors to this movement. David Pearson's coverage is monumental, one of the most diverse and broadly scoped visions capturing many of the finest; not all, but many from around the world. To include everyone would have been a volume so massive, the thought of merely lifting it would have been staggering. People so often forget, that an organic architect still needs a voliatile, creative and compassionate client base in order to bring this ideas into fruition. Sadly, that, more than creative designers are lacking in our conscious world. This is one of the best publications in print displaying the range of perception in organic architecture today, and sits alongside the volume of Alan Hess's Hyperwest, not specifically an organicist besed volume.
A good overview of different organic shaped buildings.......2005-08-02
A good book with nice graphic design and layout. A lot of pictures. Cover a lot organic architects although I miss buildings from e.g. Peter Vetch and other sculptured architecture with architecture. Easy to read but don't give deep insights.
Regards,
Martijn, Bladel Netherlands
Cutting Edge Architecture........2004-04-23
What I liked about this book is that it has introduced me to some new architects that I have not heard about previously in any other of the many books I have read.
What I don't like about this book is that it shows very little of each architects projects and some of the photo's where done using a very poor resolution camera, making for some very grainy pictures.
If your interested in the organic style of architecture then I would recommend adding it to your library. There is some very original stuff inside this book that just might spark some new ideas in your own practice.
New Organic Architecture.......2002-02-13
Some of the 28 architects who have contributed to this stimulating anthology might be surprised by the company they are in, which ranges from the cool rationalism of Tadao Ando to the romantic nationalism of Imre Makovecz. However, the eclecticism of Pearson's choice is justified, for organic architecture has always been the province of defiant individualists, from Wright on. Sensuous curves and fractal geometries, primitive and sophisticated technologies, earth and steel are all embraced by architects united only by their desire to break out of the box. Pearson emphasizes the spiritual dimensions and the affinities between natural and man-made forms, as well as the feminine side of design-though only one woman shows up on his list.

Inspirational!.......2001-04-12
As an established commercial airbrush artist, just beginning to dabble in watercolor fine art I found "Splash 6" very inspiring. It has opened my eyes to the amazing potential of watercolors and I highly recommend this book to fellow artists and lovers of fine art.
Changed my mind..........2001-02-07
My first impression of this newest Splash was "Wow!" I was impressed by the sheer gamut of paintings from super-realistic to abstract. I found the abstract selections particularly appealing and useful.
But at second glance, I was not convinced this would help my painting enough to justify keeping the book. I think I got more out of Jeanne Carbonetti's books (Tao, Zen, Yoga of ...series) and of Watercolor Bold and Free.
So, if you want a good selection of examples of art focusing on the use of texture, this is a good selection. If you have a wide library of watercolor books already, this may not be anything really that new.
Splash 6.......2000-08-28
I was given this book just two weeks ago, but have already been through it several times. As its title suggests, it does indeed focus on depicting texture in watercolors, but I kept forgetting that as I turned each page and was stunned by the incredible artwork. I liked this book the most because of the diversity of paintings included. It has examples of serious, whimsical, traditional, avant-garde, representational, abstract... You name it! It helped open up my mind as to what watercolor could be.
The only negative thing I have to say is that I feel a little intimdiated about picking up my brush again. I was telling my watercolor teacher that I know I can never be as good as these artists. She said, "Yeah, when I saw this book, I thought, 'Why bother?'" But she is picking up her brush again as I am, and we have a wealth of new ideas and techniques to try out.
My nine-year-old niece was even impressed with this book!
A splendid addition to any watercolorist artbook collection........2000-07-03
A recommended picks for discriminating library collections, Rachel Rubin Wolf's Splash 6: Magic Of Texture features almost a hundred modern watercolorists who demonstrate how to enliven a painting with texture. From matching pigments and using light to providing effective contrasts, the works of each artist are presented in full color and serve to emphasize and enhance written advice.
Not this one!.......2000-04-20
I didn't find this book up to the previous standards set in this series. I returned it!

A classic book.......2004-04-09
I have very fond memories of this book. It was the book that Introduced me to Who Ray Harryhausen was and the Art of Stop motion Photography. This book never made it to a hard cover format, but if you are a Harryhausen fan, This book is highly informative, and Jeff Rovin did a great job with the facts on Harryhausen's career way before anyone except Ernie Farino of that fine magazine fxrh- Special Efeects by Ray Harryhausen ever did. It got me so charged up, that I started doing my own stop motion experiments. I am sure that it started alot of carrers that same way also. Highly recommended. Loren.
Harryhausen=genius.......2004-01-17
Before the era of computer generated special effects, Ray
Harryhausen produced state of the art visuals using stop
motion animation. Harryhausen was the master of stop motion
animation. This book is a wonderful guide to all his films.
Loaded with pictures and very informative. Highly recommended.
A Delightful Overview of the Golden Age of Fantasy Films.......2001-04-05
Ask any visual effects artist working in the bowels of Industrial Light & Magic who their childhood idols were, odds are that their most common replies would be Ray Harryhausen and Willis "Obie" O'Brien. The stop-motion creations of these cinema pioneers have sparked the imaginations of countless moviegoers, and provided imagery which serves as stunning landmarks in the history of filmmaking. From King Kong standing atop the Empire State Building, to the hulking Cyclops and scimitar-wielding skeleton of "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad", the cinematic creations of these two legendary artists have ingrained themselves into places of honor in our popular culture.
_From the Land Beyond Beyond_ is a splendid overview of the careers of these remarkable individuals, packed with photos and behind the scenes details on how Harryhausen and Obie brought these magical creatures to life. The book goes on to touch upon the early careers of some of the effects artists who were inspired by the Masters, who themselves have now gone on to occupy prominant positions in the industry. Together with _Ray Harryhausen's Film Fantasy Scrapbook_, this volume is an vital addition to the library of any fantasy film enthusiast.

Mixed bag.......2007-08-10
I'm only about half way through but I think it's okay. Maybe a bit self-satisified. My Dad from Massachsetts, much more conservative, hated it and found it unreadable. He particularly complained about the article on growing food on the commons; it was in Weston, MA - one of the richest towns in a rich state, which lost all credibility.
an essential resource for all earth dwellers.......2007-05-12
This collection of writings provides a full spectrum of academic approaches to the subject of living on earth - sustainably. It identifies the consequences of choices, those that are, ultimately, unsustainable, and those that could lead to a liveable future.
The fact that my copy was eagerly borrowed by a graduate student economist will serve as an indication of its value and relevance.
The Essential Agrarian Reader.......2005-03-16
Did not like, thought stories were full of Idealistic nonsense. Unrealistic options for the family farmer.
The agrarian ethic is essential to our survival.......2004-01-15
Editor Norman Wirzba's counsel that we cannot live well if we do not attend to the human and non-human "bonds of relationship" is of deep import in an age of mindless surfeit masquerading as self-realization.

Book Description
Over the past ten years, since the death of the legendary Sam Walton, Wal-Mart has passed two challenges with flying colors: leadership transitions and rapid growth. Sam Walton's successors have taken the company into far-flung new markets and new directions yet without losing their down-to-earth retailing culture. Slater was granted unprecedented access to the company; he takes readers deep into where the big decisions are made about strategy and operations as he weaves a fascinating story about the many challenges of the past decade.

Book Description
John Chambers and the Cisco Way gets to the heart of a phenomenon that has taken center stage of world business. Through expert analysis and insight acquired through extensive interviews with venture capitalists and Cisco executives, customers, and competitors, author John Waters skillfully explains the management style of CEO John Chambers and his role in Cisco Systems' success in the volatile technology sector.
Beyond exploring his key business strategies and management philosophy at Cisco, this book chronicles Chambers' amazing journey from IBM salesman to Cisco CEO. In just a few short years, Chambers has presided over the creation of more than $480 billion in stockholder value, and has expanded his company into nearly every part of the networking industry. John Waters gives readers an inside look at one of the most successful managers in history and places his story within the current business landscape and market environment, offering new insight into Chambers' innovative leadership.
Customer Reviews:
Some Useful Information but not much business insight.......2007-06-14
This book covers some of Cisco's corporate and Chambers' personal history. However the book does not present any detailed analysis of either. Instead it relies on press-release and newspaper excerpts to document parts of the Cisco and Chambers story. It does not appear that the author had much direct access to John Chambers.
In places, the book presents analysis which is either naive or false. For example, the book claims that Cisco viewed Sycamore as a "big-eight" competitor at one point. I am sure Cisco viewed Sycamore as a competitor, but it could not have viewed it as an imminent threat - Sycamore was a tiny startup born in the late 90s around the same time as Juniper. Sycamore was always a much smaller threat than Juniper was and both companies were (probably) 1/100th the size of Cisco (or smaller) in terms of revenue.
All in all, this book is suitable for somebody who wants to get a broad view of cisco's evolution. It is not suitable for somebody looking for precise facts or for deep business analysis.
Surprisingly readable.......2002-05-01
I was given this book as a present. I warmly thanked the giver for her thoughtfullness, but secretly, I dreaded reading the book. These unauthorized bios are generally either full of senseless/salacious details, or they're dry as an annual report. Most of them are suitable as torture devices. Why do I bother you ask? Knowledge is power, and I invest in stocks.
Well, big surprise.
This book reads with an almost perfect balance of translated tech talk and personal detail about Chambers. This is no simple feat for the author, as Cisco's core business is anything but easy to explain, but you will be amazed at how much you painlessly learn about the innards of the net and how / where Cisco fits.
I could go on, but your time is better spent buying and reading this book.
I hope Waters has another of these in the hopper.
How the Computer Industry Was Born.......2002-04-13
This book is interesting, packed with facinating facts and I love the way it explains in "real people" language just how the whole computer industry got started. It also offers insight into the character and effective management practices of John Chambers, without being a flattery piece. The book communicates the fast-paced life in Silicon Valley and extends beyond the Cisco experience to in-depth explanations of how the computer industry giants grow, compete and sometimes die. A wealth of knowledge with an insightful look at a manager who has worthwhile practices to share with any of today's managers.
