Book Description
Richard Longstreth provides a detailed picture of the early careers of four architects--Bernard Maybeck, Willis Polk, Ernest Coxhead, and A.C. Schweinfurth--who had a decisive impact on the course of design in the San Francisco Bay Area and who stand as significant contributors to American architecture.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have book for any student of California architecture.......2001-02-10
This is the only book I have found with highly detailed information about Ernest Coxhead, Willis Polk and A.C. Schweinfurth. The other architect featured here is Bernard Maybeck, who has been written about in other books. This book is excellent at showing how the works of these four architects were influenced by their mentors, such as A. Page Brown, Mckim, Mead & White, Daniel Burnham, and how their work influenced each other into what was to be known as the San Francisco Bay Regional style. As any architecture book should be, it is well illustrated with photos and drawings of the works of these architects, as well as examples of buildings that influenced them.

Superb guide for beginner/intermediate photographer.......2005-10-30
Despite that I'm losing a fair chunk of change on Kodak in the stock market, and that this book touts Kodak film, it remains one of the BEST all-time books for beginner/intermediate photographers!
This gem of a book explains in easy language all the basics one needs to learn - exposure (shutter speed, f-stops, ISO), lenses, composition, filters, flash and taking pictures in different lighting situations (daylight, backlight, sidelight etc.)
Although some may think this book is "dated" because it does not address the digital realm, it will remain a classic for teaching the basic, unchanging principles of photography.
Highly recommended!!!
THE BEST first book on photography.......2003-09-03
Kodak has published little books on various aspects of photography for fifty years. I learned the basics of composition, depth of field, and most other fundamentals from those little books. This bigger book combines all those little books into a real introduction to photography. Lots of good photo examples (with Kodak film type and lens information, so that you know how the photo was created.) accompany an easy-to-understand text on the how and why of composition, exposure, lenses, flash, and so on.
If you just bought a new 35mm or high-end digital camera, then read your camera manual and this book, both cover to cover, and that's all you'll need for the first year or 2,400 pictures, whichever comes first!
Virtually useless book.......2003-08-05
This book is so generic in its advice that it is all but useless. It tries to be all things to all cameras, and therefore says nothing specific about anything. Add to this the way it tries to tout Kodak film, and you realize Kodak should be paying people to read this book. But they still wouldn't know how to work their cameras.
One of the best.......2003-03-06
I purchased the Kodak Guide To 35mm Photography for a friend, and being a
professional photographer, I thought that the National Geographic Photography Field
Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures would be a perfect source of advanced
knowledge for me...but I was wrong. The National Geographic book is good, but the
Kodak Guide is much better. Both books start with the basics, but Kodak fills its book
with much more information and far more (and usually better) photographs. This is a
great book for amateurs and professionals alike. I've just sent the NG book back, and I'll soon order the Kodak Guide for myself!
Great for beginners and intermediate photographers!.......2003-01-29
If you are a beginner or intermediate photographer, this book will tell you what you need to know to get the results you want in your photography. It covers the topics of film, exposure, and flash photography, from the basics to intermediate technique. It also has chapters that give advice on specific types of photography: action, existing-light, and close-up. There are also chapters on lenses and filters and a short chapter on digital manipulation. Most of the information in this book would be appropriate for digital as well as film photography. If you just bought your first SLR, or if you would like to better understand what your camera can do, this is the perfect book for you. It also makes a great gift for the young or relatively inexperienced photographer. Advanced amateurs may find it useful as a refresher or reference to keep for those occasions when you forget some technique that you haven't used in a while. But the book's intended audience is novice to intermediate photographers, and it does a very good job of addressing the needs of those photographers.

A handy guide for the photographer on the go.......2005-07-22
This is a very handy guide to have for the SLR user. While it doesn't have anything that the pros don't already know, it's a big help to the amateur enthusiast just learning the joys of 35mm photography. All the basics (loading film, lenses, aperture, flash, etc.) are covered nicely and the photo examples in the book are great. They're small, but this is a pocket guide after all. I agree with one reviewer who said that the book should be updated. Despite that, you can't really go wrong having this book in the camera bag to use as a quick reference when shooting in the field. It's a solid little guide that would go together nicely with one of Kodak's bigger guides.
An Indispensable Pocket Reference.......2003-04-12
This little book tucks right into my camera bag, so it's easy to take along on photo outings. If you're at all serious about learning how to take better 35mm photos, you need to have this little book on hand for when you have those burning questions about light conditions, aperature/shutter speed combinations, etc. This isn't a book that is necessarily a stand-alone guide. Think of it as a quick reference to the bigger version. While this little book is a decent collection of quick tips for the field, if you're really serious about learning 35mm photography, get bigger Kodak guide as well.
When good, if easy... better........2002-09-27
This is a great easy to follow guide for picture taking, and correct use of equipment. Also very helpfull for litlle technical tips and composition remarks whenever you mostly need them. This handy manual, is perfect for carring in a camera case or in your car. However, its excelent for a beginner, for a more experienced photographers might seem too simple; but still good enough as a practical remminder.
Good but needs an update.......2002-03-19
This small book packs a lot of useful information. It's size makes it possible to carry it in your pocket or bag. It covers the most essential points of photography. Great for starters! My only criticism: it needs an update. Modern SLR's are not covered and the illustrations make you feel like you've picked up a second hand book from the 80's. Hopefully Kodak will make a new and updated edition.
Great travel photography guide.......2000-09-20
The book is an excellent guide to take with you on a trip. It is lightweight, compact, and summarizes ideas needed for good pictures. I have the Nikon and National Geographic guides and about ten other photography books. All are are too heavy to take on an overseas trip.

easy to understand, yet deliciously technical.......1999-10-13
After reading a few books about photography, I found this one of the most valuables. There is a large array of pictures explaining the different terminology in 35 mm photography, that had make this book my favorite and transfered to be my every day companion. While traveling to Hawai, I had the opportunity to read and immediately put in practice a few specific techniques. After developing the film, my wife for the first time approved of this hobby.
Excellent in-depth guide to SLR photography for beginners.......1999-03-27
This is the most detailed, yet still readable, guide I've seen. It is actually the text-book for my photography class, and is recommended by the teacher. Good colour photos to illustrate points, and nicely laid out. I WILL be using all the manual settings on my camara soon!

Could have been better.......2004-10-31
The KODAK Pocket Guide to Point-and-Shoot Photography is a very basic book that covers some basic techniques for making photographs with a compact camera. It tells you when to use flash and when not to, it tells something about framing subjects etc. This is all basic and useable information for anyone who for example wonders why all of his nighttime flash-photos always come out with a pitch black background. What this book does not cover is some very essential information about the working of a compact camera. In other words, it does not tell you that the metering system of any (compact) camera 'sees' everything as a middle gray tone. To get a correct is exposure it is essential that one knows this, especially with a compact camera that does not have an manual override function like an SLR camera, this book does not mention this at all even though it is so essential to get a correct exposed photo. That's why i give this only book four stars instead of five.
Book will not help you use your point and shoot camera.......2001-05-26
I bought this book hoping that it would serve as a supplement for the ridiculously small instruction pamphlet that accompanied my highly rated Samsung Evoca 140S point and shoot camera. Although point and shoot cameras are by their name supposed to make taking pictures easy, the Samsung instructions are written for people who are familar with more difficult cameras and just want an easier and smaller camera.
If you are looking for an extended instruction pamphlet describing the use of features generally found in point and shoot cameras this book is not for you. The few useful ideas it contains concern picture taking in general and have nothing to do with point and shoot cameras in particular. If the book had been included for free with a three pack roll of Kodak film you would not have thought that you were getting anything extra of note for your money.
The only good thing I can say about the book is that the paper is slick and of high quality. It is in color and appoximately 3" x 6" and 110 pages long. In my opinion it is worth about 25 cents from a usefulness point of view.

Customer Reviews:
A must read for every entreprenuerial spirit!!.......2007-01-10
Half way into the book, I started shopping for studio and retail space. It will motivate you to be brave!!
Beautiful Pictures; Great for an Upscale Boutique.......2006-08-26
The pictures alone almost make it worth purchasing this book. It is easy to read. The book is most useful for someone trying to start an upscale boutique (ideally clothing). If this is you, buy this book. The pictures and the ideas are very much worth it. This will be a great resource.
I was helping plan a semi-upscale souvenir shop and found the ideas only somewhat applicable. That said, there are a few guidelines that I found really useful. I made sure to photocopy those few pages for my reference.
Well written, pratical advice, illustrative photos - Love this book!.......2005-07-04
I really love this book as it was a break from the word overloading of most business books. It had lovely colour pictures of actual products, services, interior designs, branding, packaging, etc. These illustrations backed up the information on building your small business.
The book is divided into 3 parts:
1. Getting Started - Government regulation; Keeping Records; Establishing credit; Dealing with vendors; Finding a Space; Negotiating; Security; Insurance
2. Planning For Success - Inventory; Setting prices; Merchandising and Display; Publicity and Advertising; the Internet
3. Dealing with People - Building Staff;p Training; Delegating; Problem solving; Expansion
I must stress that this book is an addition to your business collection; not a one-stop shop. This book does not provide the in-depth coverage of issues you'll need to start your business. But especially if you've got most of that already covered and you are looking for ideas or personal stories that can help to streamline your particular service, this is a great book to read. It is an easy, enjoyable to read plus beautiful to flip through and I got a ton of ideas. I can see myself coming back to this book again and again as I start my business.
Thanks Victoria Magazine.
