'Tavernor has done a first-rate job'.......2001-04-02
Sir John Summerson, reviewing the book in Architecture Today, 18 December, 1998 wrote: 'Andrea Palladio, probably the most famous architect in the western world, stands at the beginning of the movement called Palladianism. So successful was the Palladian formula that it was consciously revived outside of Italy and in other times, first by Inigo Jones at the court of Charles I in the early 17th century, by Colen Campbell and Lord Burlington in the early 18th century, and by Thomas Jefferson and others in the New World. In each case, what was appealing about Palladianism was more than a matter of style: it was the fact that it expressed a way of life and a humanist philosophy, deriving ultimately from ancient Rome but enriched by the thinkers of the Renaissance and the Augustan Age. In comparison to James Ackerman's The Villa, and Paul Holberton's Palladio's Villas 'Tavernor's book is the most erudite and the best written of the three books....Tavernor has done a first-rate job. His study is the most up-to-date Palladian book currently on the market....Rudolf Wittkower would, I know, have admired Tavernor's book as much as I do.'

Book Description
Jump back through time to an era when sitting at the counter in your neighborhood diner was sure to bring hearty made-from-scratch food, friendly service, and an atmosphere all it own. Those sleek stainless steel eateries can still be found with lines of faithful and appreciative customers waiting to scoot into a red leather booth and sink their appetites into true American comfort food. The waitress may holler out your order in slang only a diner-phile may understand, but if you're a regular she probably remembers your name. Look! Here's that slice of Mile-High Meringue Pie to top off your meal! The first luscious mouthful will take you away to where Elvis is on the nickel jukebox and friends walk in the door.
Featuring a fun, colorful journey through diner history, Retro Diner offers over 115 of the best comfort food recipes from the American roadside, including Blue Moon Diner's Patty Melt, Steeltown Meatloaf, Dixie Diner's Blueberry Pancakes, and Peach Cobbler from Jake's.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best diner cookbooks out there.......2007-08-08
I really love this cookbook! Not only are the recipes all from diners across the country, but they all contain ingredients you would find in a typical cupboard. It also has wonderful images from back in the day and a history of the diner. I would buy this as a gift and I plan to buy the other cookbooks for myself!
THE GOLDEN AGE OF DINERS!.......2005-07-22
In an era where generic, noisy, bar & grill restaurants crowd every street corner, the days of mom & pop diners and their home-cooked specialties are sorely missed. Retro Diner from Collectors Press is an ode to the golden age of diners and diner foods. Filled with over 115 recipes as well as vintage photographs, menus and advertising, Retro Diner is a look back at those days of spinning seats and gum stuck under the counter.
The book begins with a short introduction of the history of diners and how they originated out of the need to fill hungry workers who worked late shifts when most restaurants were closed. They hit their peak in the 1950's in the time of juke boxes and car hops and those magnificent train car-style diners that most of us only know from seeing in film and TV. Thankfully diners have undergone a resurgence in popularity in recent years, thanks in part to TV and film. Many have taken on the task of restoring the old places and many new diners have been built in that classic 50's and 60' styling.
Retro Diner presents the authentic recipes, culled from these various diners, arranged into sections such as breakfasts, soups, sandwiches, and the ever-popular "Blue Plate Specials". Start your day with easy home made biscuits, southern-style corn fritters, or corn beef hash and eggs.
Soups & Sandwiches were always a popular choice among diner patrons. Enjoy the Corn Chowder from the Sweetheart Diner or Cream of Mushroom from Harry's Midnight Diner. How about a Count of Monte Cristo sandwich in all it's battered, deep-fried glory or the patty melt from Blue Moon Diner.
Every diner had it's "Blue Plate Special" and Retro Diner presents no less than ten classic recipes for an all-time diner favorite, meatloaf. Then there's the Dinner Pie from Jack's D.C. Diner and Hungarian Goulash from Zippy's; chicken-fried steak, chicken and dumplings, BLT's, Apple Pie, and so much more. Even if you don't enjoy the recipes, you're sure to enjoy this trip down memory lane.
Retro flash back..........2005-06-10
The book has some really good recipes and I would give it a full 5 stars if it included some recipes for classic diner drinks. Then the book would be complete.
I love the sandwhiches, country fried steak with gravy and pie recipes. Great retro pictures of ads and people from the 40's-50's. It's a great coffee table book to thumb through and the recipes are really interesting too.
A compendium of nostalgic, yesteryear cuisine.......2003-01-10
Retro Diner: Comfort Food From The American Roadside by Linda Everett is a compendium of nostalgic, yesteryear cuisine that is a kind of birthright culinary legacy for every American. Profusely illustrated throughout, Retro Diner is a celebration of great eating as experienced by generations of men and women who ate "blue plate specials" and other palate pleasing, appetite satisfying, pocketbook friendly fare from a local diner. From Granny Glenn's Biscuits n' Gravey; Corn Chowder from the Sweetheart Diner; and Off the Grill Ham n' Cheese; to Countryside Chicken n' Dumplings; Big Daddy's Diner Meat Loaf; and Mushroom Burgers from Mooney's, Retro Diner is a pure and highly recommended celebration of a distinctive American cuisine and individualistic dining ambiance that was to pass into cultural history with the introduction and coming dominance of the fast-food franchise.
Step into the past with top recipes from top diners.......2002-12-18
Dive into the specialty dishes that made the old-time diners famous. "Retro Diner: Comfort Food from the American Roadside" won't make it onto the top healthy foods list, but it sure makes some old-time favorites come to life.
With recipes from the 1930's to the 1960's you are sure to find your favorite diner meals here. Alabama Sweet Potatoes, Monte Cristo Sandwich, Butterscotch Pie, you'll find recipes here that you won't find anywhere else. But don't look for any shortcuts here; these are the original recipes, which means the recipes don't start with a plain cake mix but with flour, eggs, and salt.
The book can be confusing at times like where step seven of Dixie Diner's Blueberry Pancakes say to "bake in your waffle iron", which would make it a waffle and not a pancake, or the Chipped Beef recipe that does not include toast or biscuits in the ingredients list but does state to serve it over toast or biscuits, a bit of an annoyance if you are done preparing it and then find out that you have no bread. Things like this are the only reason this did not receive a full five star rating.
Still, even with the small annoyances, the book is a pleasure to read. To add to the enjoyment of the book, it is filled with illustrations, advertising, and photographs from the appropriate years. For those who would like to travel back to a time of simple pleasures the book is a wonderful nostalgic trip and the recipes sure to delight.

Food You Love to Eat--AND Cook!.......2005-12-19
When someone gifted me this book, my first thought was, "Oh, No, not ANOTHER cookbook!" Boy was I surprised as I turned from mouth watering page to mouth watering page. I want to make ALL the recipes, and better yet, I can! Not a book full of exotic ingredients and impossible techniques, but real, hearty (and not so unhealthy, as you might think) family meals.
Every recipe I make is more fantastic than the next. Thank You Thank You! Randy and Teri are clearly expert in this area, and they have definitely brought a fresh spin to the Retro book series. Kudos to Retro for finding them and getting them on board. Let's see more!
More Wonderful Diner Recipes and Lore.......2005-12-10
A sequel to it's very enjoyable Retro Diner, More Retro Diner revisits those classic establishments of roadside cooking in a nostalgic trip back to the era of breakfast specials, club sandwiches and hot soups. The diner has undergone a renaissance in recent years and while there are no where near the number of diner establishments that there were in the 50's and 60's, people are once again seeing the allure of the tiny, home-cooking stops. The diner influence can be seen today even in many mainstream chain restaurants with menu options reminiscent of diner foods. As the authors of More Retro Diner point out, while all diners sold burgers, soups, etc, it was their unique creations that often out them on the map and kept customers coming back for more.
Along with vintage photos and art of diners, and diner menus, the book provides dozens of authentic recipes culled from some of these legendary eateries, many of which are still in business today. Frequent travelers, particularly in the eastern part of the country where diners flourished will certainly recognize many of the names. At it's core diner food is the best comfort food, good tasting and filling. There's the French onion soup from the Oasis Diner, Cincinnati-style Chili, fish & chips, and Ken's real onion rings.
Sandwiches were always a diner staple and Mastoris diner in New Jersey boasts a menu of over 80 different sandwich selections. You'll find recipes for classics like chicken clubs, Philly cheese steaks, Sloppy Joes, and the good old meatloaf sandwich. Moving over to the grill there are delectable recipes for chicken-fried steak, skirt steak fajitas, and cheese-stuffed burgers. But getting back to those unique recipes, the section devoted to blue plate specials includes fare like the chicken & rice casserole from Moody's Diner in Maine, in business for over 75 years; the crab cakes from the Blue Comet Lounge, and Betsy's Shepherds pie.
For those who long for the feeling of those family vacations in the car of yesteryear, or for anyone who just loves good home-cooking, More Retro Diner satisfies the hunger.

Book Description
Seven out of every 10 millionaires have made their money in real estate investment. But, unlike many real estate investors, the truly wealthy focus on commercial real estate, specifically multi-units (apartment buildings). Yet, investing in apartment buildings can be a daunting proposition for many would-be and seasoned investors. Gregory D. Warr, Wall Street trader, real estate investor and nationally renowned trainer, demonstrates how the benefits outweigh the risks – there is less competition, fewer limitations in the market and better turnover necessary to make money for multi-unit investors. He has built his profitable real estate portfolio from the ground-up using his own proprietary strategies for investing in apartment buildings. In his book, Make More Money-Investing in Multi-Units, Warr outlines the process for acquiring apartment buildings and managing a successful business investing in commercial real estate.
Drawing from his success, you will learn to:
• Identify the best markets to locate properties with the greatest potential for success
• The process that determines what properties yield the greatest returns •Acquire buildings with little or no personal capital
• The three best structures to negotiate an offer
• The 1 team member that will make or break your investing career and how to find him or her
• How to help others and communities by giving back

Yuriy Z.......2007-05-25
This is a great book for an investor who is new to real estate or for a real estate investor with some experience like me who is serious about real estate and understands that to be very successful, learning from seasoned, very successful investors like Gregory Warr can give you a huge advantage and help enormously in achieving the goal. For those of us without rich dads, being able to learn about "tricks of trade" straight from the source is invaluable.
I read the book from cover to cover on the day when I bought it. The book is easy to read and full of valuable and practical recommendations such as: invest in low- to middle-income housing as more people are looking for low- to middle income housing than those who are looking for high-income housing. Mr. Warr shares some insightful ideas about financing of properties, structuring the offer and negotiating, and managing multiunits. The book bursts with energy, which is very contagious.
It clearly shows that it is possible to create wealth and stability investing in multinunits and guides you how this can be done. The best part is that Mr. Warr shares a lot of his personal experience, so his examples and recommendations are very convincing.
After reading this book, I felt like a new door is now open for me. I am looking forward to closing on my first multiunit.
So Easy, My 11 Year Old Understands It!.......2007-05-02
When I start in a new area of business, I am always afraid that I will pick up a book that is way over my head. This book really IS an easy to understand,"Step-by-Step Guide"! The glossary in the back of this book is worth as much as the rest of the book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Multiunits. Also, if you get the chance to sit under Greg's teaching in person...DO IT!
Great information easy to follow.......2007-02-27
I have read and followed the steps in Greg's book and have purchased my first multi-unit property.
The book is written in a simple format and easy to follow the steps to purchase multi-units.
Read and take all the pointers and buy units --it is the way to financial freedom.
Light reading .......2007-02-26
I've read a bunch of real estate books since I bought my first apartment building in 1975. This is a light weight book for beginners with no real examples of actual deals made by the author. That may be fine for single family houses that any amateur can buy and manage in his spare time. When it comes to buying a 25+ unit apartment building for a million dollars or more, you better know a lot more than anything in this book. The book makes references to a web sight that seems to be abandoned, making mention of upcoming events that were six months ago.
Most Amazing Book on How to do apartment buildings!!!.......2007-02-03
This is the most amazing book on teaching how to do apartment buildings. God Bless Greg Warr for sharing his insight and thoughts in an enjoyable fashion. Must read for anyone who does anything with Apartment buildings, no matter what level you are in.

My Thoughts.......2006-08-24
Simple was this book, some good advice. I got some good ideas and look foward to acting on the advice given by the interviews. I see theres a future in this business after thirty-five. Thanks.
Written by two non-appraisers.......2006-04-22
Upon seeing this item listed for sale, I became curious as to the background of the authors. As it turn out neither one of them is a licensed real estate appraiser. There has been a lot of hype around the appraisal profession lately with Money listing it as one of the top careers. While I appreciate the attention my profession is receiving, many of these books and articles give people an irresponsible expectation of what it is like getting into the industry. I question how useful a book on how to become a real estate appraiser, written by two people who have never undertaken that career choice, will be. Buy and use with caution.
Book Description
The Appraisal of Real Estate provides readers with a solid foundation for a broad and substantial understanding of real property valuation, with detailed information on appraisal theory, highest and best use analysis, land value, valuation procedures, and the preparation of appraisal reports.
Customer Reviews:
A Requirement for Future Appraisers, Yes, BUT.............2006-03-02
If you are planning on taking your local state appraiser's exam, you no doubt will be required to purchase this text. It is, for better or worse, a "standard" in the industry. Unfortunately, as a professional educator with 17 years college teaching experience, I can honestly say that this book is incredibly verbose, repetitive, and badly organized. This 600+ page tome could EASILY be reduced by 50% (or more) without losing ANY necessary/vital information. If you have ever had to read a book on managment or education, then you KNOW what I am saying here. For published works on real estate appraisal that are concise, to-the-point, and not mind-numbingly boring, look elsewhere........

Far too shallow.......2003-09-11
I found this book to be far too shallow to be of any great use. While it does gives an overall picture of the situation, much of the contents lack depth that neither practitioner nor student would find it to be of much help when dealing with real life problems. Not recommended.
elementary level.......2001-01-29
this book is useful to the elementary level cos the book has not much 'new' things to the students and/or practitioners. For those who have studied finance would find this book too simple. for those who are interested in hk property market, I would suggest another book, "real estate in hk" ...complied by Mr. Thomas N T Poon., published by PACE
