Book Description

In a frenzied modern world, the concept of the home as a place of retreat and tranquility is increasingly seductive. Thus "Peaceful Spaces" is born, offering chic and accessible solutions with which to develop your spiritual sanctuary. "Peaceful Spaces" is not about creating a temple to minimalism; rather it is about building a personal oasis of calm-a place where you can escape from the clutter and consumerism of the outside world without rejecting the comforts that make a home into a haven. Inspiration is drawn from the spirituality of the East, combining Oriental simplicity with our basic human need to connect with the rhythms of the natuarl world. The first step is to clear space and banish clutter, throwing out the possessions that you no longer need. The next stage is to take the blank canvas you have created and to build on that using a soft colour palette, natural materials, and carefully chosen and positioned furnishings and accessories. "Peaceful Spaces" then presents inspirational ways in which to apply these basic tenets to the key areas of the modern home-spaces for living, eating, sleeping, bathing, and working, as well as spaces for enjoying the outdoors. Whether your home is a minimal urban loft or a relaxed, pared-down country retreat, this serene style creates spaces that are soothing rather than stark. Tranquility has never felt, or looked, so good.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up 100% to its title. Ten stars.......2006-02-14

Looking for a book that actually was what it said and this book did not disappoint. Peaceful spaces galore and into a haven of calm and tranquility are what it delivers.

Page 10: 'By questioning the purpose of everything you own, you will quickly realize that it is you, rather than the stuff that surrounds you, that must take center stage in the home.' Page 13: 'Next look at your furniture and fixtures and ask yourself what you could do without. If you are scrupulously honest, you may well discover that many things you thought were indispensable to domestic bliss are, in fact, easily dispensed with.'

Page 18 'continuity of color prevents fragmentation' I have found to be one main asset when it comes to creating calm and tranquility and the author knows their stuff well. As is the authors thoughtfulness in showing a variety of spaces and abodes from city to suburbia, country and mountains. Something for everyone. Well laid out and a book one will probably use as a reference for decades since the ideas are not 'fad' but timeless.

In the back of the book starting on page 138 there are sources galore listed both international and here in the states. Where possible she includes their websites which is so helpful. The book was well worth the price.

Photos and advice combine to introduce a clutter-free, peaceful way of life. I was looking for some inspiration as to how I can simplify my life and stop keeping so many knick-knacks out. This book is helping me realize how important it is--and how good you'll feel--when you finally decide to clear up your space. If you already know a little bit about Fung Shui, it'll add to the positive effects of this book.

5 out of 5 stars tranquil pictures, nice advice.......2003-03-29

'Peaceful Spaces' is composed of two parts. The first half is a truly wonderful collection of decorative rooms and principles telling you how to make your own rooms look really nice. The idea is to get rid of clutter and excess furnishings, and then artfully arange carefully chosen furnishings & decorations to build a cohesive, peaceful room. Some of the rooms are a bit too spartan for my tastes, but most are simply wonderful. This book isn't about decorating style (e.g., country or modern) but how to use shape, texture, color, and materials to compose an inspiring display. 'Peaceful Spaces' touches upon Feng Shui, Zen, and Japeneese decorating style.

The second half of the book applies the principles to different rooms of the house & office.

If decorating your house were an art class, then most books teach technique (e.g., how to do faux painting, how to decorate in the country style, how to recover a sofa, how to choose colors); whereas this book teaches composition (e.g., how to put the pieces together into a pleasing ensamble). My experience with art classes & decorating books is that actual advice on composition is very, very rare. This book is a gem!

        Book Description

Walker Evans was perhaps the greatest "documentary artist" American has ever known. In a career that lasted forty-six years (1928-1974) Evans profoundly changed the way Americans looked at themselves, their social causes, and their country. Drawn from a largely unseen private collection-the largest private collection of Walker Evans photographs in the world-this lavishly produced volume publishes here for the first time scores of pictures that have henceforth been inaccessible to the public. Included are the familiar images of Evans's Southern work (1935-36), as well as far less familiar images of Evans's friends and fellow artists, his work in Tahiti, photographs that he made of Victorian House architecture (1930-31), and photographs done on travels to England, Cuba, Maine, Nova Scotia, Chicago and New Orleans. Authors Belinda Rathbone and Clark Worswick rise to the occasion of documenting Evans' monumental career, exploring the overlooked byways of Evans' career at a moment when a rediscovery of his life's work is taking place in both the museum world and in the world of photographic collecting. What we are presented with here is a definitive and sometimes surprising look at the photographer whose oeuvre prefigures the work of photographers and documentary artists of all stripes.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Secret and Excellent Documentary of America.......2003-01-05

'The Lost Work' refers to Walker Evans's own private collection of his B/W images - 'the prints that he chose to keep in his own print boxes for posterity'. He was probably the greatest documentary artist America has ever known. It presents the faces and lives of Americans in the late 1930s and then to the mid 1970s.

From the introduction, we can see how a photographer had struggled for his lifetime for acquiring support, and eventually his works could 'enter' museum or collectors' hand during the end of his life. Behind the images, you may have a deeper insight of this photographer. From his life, it seems very contradictory between his character and his images.

The printing of this book is excellent.

        Book Description

Rare, romantic, and forever: The diamond industry depends on these myths to reap billions of dollars of profit. This sensational investigation explodes such fallacies and -reveals how multimillion dollar advertising campaigns create the impression of rarity and romance. It reveals, too, a very secret and unromantic world, one that is dominated and controlled by a handful of mighty corporations.

Taking us through seven decades of intrigue and -manipulation that span the globe, Janine Roberts has written the most expansive and explosive expose ever on diamonds; among Roberts' revelations:

How De Beers hides away rich diamond deposits-and where some of these are located.
How a long-term companion of Jackie Onassis was a CIA-linked millionaire diamond merchant tied to coups and dictators in Central Africa.
Just how diamonds are "fixed" to make them more expensive.
How major diamond companies cooperated with Hitler's Germany-and how much they were paid.
How industrial diamond supplies were artificially -restricted to the United States during World War II, severely damaging its war effort and how U.S. Intelligence came to suspect treason.
How a major diamond deposit in Arkansas was sabotaged to stop it coming into production.
How the White House was manipulated into buying millions of diamonds it did not need and now must sell.
How terrorism found its way into the diamond trade, not recently but many decades ago.
How diamonds are secretly moved by the millions around the world.

The inquiry the diamond cartel did not want and tried to stop. . . . If you have ever wondered what tales might lie behind the glitter of a diamond ring, read this account of the most international media investigation ever launched!

4 out of 5 stars All you wanted to know about Debeers and too Much.......2007-09-17

The book is a great commentary on the diamond mining and diamond industry. The problem is that author is an advocate against DeBeers and the diamond industry. She does her best to document the facts but every word is through the filter of her hatred of the DTC and DeBeers. It seems that they can do nothing right anywhere at anytime. Myself personally being in the diamond industry I can see her bias, others may not.

        3 out of 5 stars Average Read.......2007-04-20

I enjoyed this book for the most part. I enjoyed reading it because I was already interested in the concepts. Debeers cover up, master marketing, Bloody wars funded by diamonds that rich people wear. I soon came to realize that there was little of that. This book could have been written much better. All the components of a fascinating story are here. Instead you are left with a feeling of, "I know diamonds are evil stop telling me the same thing over and over!" I wish that this book would have gone deeper into the lives of the people that this industry has a negative effect on.

5 out of 5 stars An important expose.......2005-11-04

Written by journalist and human rights activist Janine Roberts, and now in a newly revised edition, Glitter & Greed: The Secret World of the Diamond Cartel is a shocking expose of the inequalities, economic manipulation, inhuman treatment, and outright cruelties facilitated and perpetuated by the global Big Diamond industry - most notably the notorious De Beers and Oppenheimer cartels. Chapters go far beyond the injustice covered in the recent popular movie "The Blood Diamond", revealing how some major diamond companies collaborated with Hitler's Germany and industrial diamond supplies were artificially restricted, damaging the American war effort in World War II; how child labor is used to cut diamonds, with horrifically detrimental effects on children's health; how tuberculosis and other life-threatening conditions flourish among diamond miners; how terrorism has milked money from the diamond trade for decades; why the Kimberly Process meant to protect Americans from supporting murderers with their diamond money has failed; and how the myth that diamonds are "rare" has been perpetrated through the fixing of diamond prices and other nefarious means. A chilling expose that not only roots out evidence of cruelty but also proposes reforms and solutions. In an era of rampant corporate greed, immorality, and malfeasance, "Glitter & Greed" is a "must-read" for anyone considering buying a diamond, and carries the absolute highest recommendation.

        5 out of 5 stars Diamonds/Price-Fixing/Civil Wars/Child Slavery Are Forever.......2005-05-13

Actually, diamonds are not forever, according to this book, as they are brittle and can be destroyed by fire.

On the back cover it says at the top "[Business/History/Human Rights]". I would consider rewording that as "[True Crime/Business/Human Rights Abuses]". The back cover also declares: "The inquiry that De Beers and the Oppenheimer family that control the cartel did not want, that it's people tried to stop." Now that I can believe. It would appear that the author is lucky to still be alive after the 20+ years of her investigations (assuming she hasn't by now been assassinated by agents for the diamond cartel).

Possibly everything you could want to know about the diamond industry is in this book. I had already heard about the De Beers/Botswana government campaign to evict the Bushmen aborigines as this has been reported in the British press. However I was unaware of the role of the Diamond Cartel in the human rights atrocities in the Congo and Sierra Leone, nor of how Indian child workers are kept in a state of "debt bondage" while preparing gems for the diamond market.

All very depressing, and essential reading I would say for anyone thinking of buying a diamond for a loved one, and for anyone interested in the machinations of big business. The one crumb of comfort is that high quality laboratory engineered synthetic diamonds are now commercially available.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting... but deeply flawed.......2004-08-24

I hesitate to give this book such a poor rating, because it's significantly better than the other accounts I've read and the facts need to be heard. But, following the all-too-familiar trend of the modern "factual account", it's poorly written and presents its case in a rather slapdash fashion.

While I have no doubt that the basic story (DeBeers' blatant manipulation of diamond prices, dangerous working conditions in diamond mines, and rampant trade in "blood diamonds") is accurate to some degree, it's a challenge to find anything resembling specific claims with definite proof. The book reminds me more of a "20/20 expose" than a careful, verifiable and accurate telling. Random photographs scattered throughout the text (of such fascinating subjects as outside entrances to mine workers' quarters) do little to improve this impression. Worse, there are a few "side subjects" (such as a discussion of synthetic diamonds) that contain obvious inaccuracies.

There's an interesting and vital story here, and Roberts is to be commended for presenting it in the face of a cartel with billions of dollars at stake and no compunction to "play fair". (Compare Roberts' relatively hard-hitting story to Michael Hart's ambivalent, yet very probably DeBeers-approved, "Diamond".) If the appendix describing her difficulties in getting her film aired is to be believed, there's more than a little "funny business" going on.

But... it's such a fascinating story that it doesn't need the journalistic excess that permeates this book. A sober and straightforward account would've been more convincing and ultimately more helpful.

            Book Description

The gulls are a large family of seabirds, familiar and distinctive as a group, but one of the most challenging to separate at the species level, especially in their various stages of immature plumage. This guide offers the most comprehensive treatment ever published on the gulls of North America, Europe, and Asia. Klaus Malling Olsen and Hans Larsson treat a total of forty-three species--each depicted in considerable detail, with a full description of every plumage and racial variation. The text is complemented not only by superb color paintings by Larsson, but also by 800 color photographs.

Gulls explore a variety of habitats, consume a wide range of food, and are often extremely abundant. They are also great wanderers, with several American species often appearing in Western Europe and vice versa. As well as identification criteria, this book includes an up-to-date assessment of the range and status of every species, together with information on patterns on vagrancy.

This important guide is published at a critical time in the development of gull taxonomy. The large white-headed gulls found in North America, Europe, and Asia comprise a superspecies complex, with the precise relationships between various components still under considerable debate. A thorough illustrative and textual treatment of the group is needed, and this book provides the most recent and complete overview. This is the essential reference to a fascinating and endlessly challenging group of birds.

I've got it and you don't! Too bad. It's outta print. I called the publisher and they are not reissuing. Go find it used. It is worth every penny ($85 I paid) if you need or desire to ID gulls.

5 out of 5 stars Gulls made easy..........2006-02-23

Well....maybe not easy....but, not through any fault of this book! The book starts with a lesson on the various body parts, as you will need to know many of these in order to ascertain what gull you have sitting in front of you. A comparison of the wings comes next. Then, it goes through each gull species and all of its plumages, including the months you might expect to see them in that plumage. It ends by discussing the various hybrids. If you ever hope to get beyond referring to gulls as "gull sp.," this book will do it. When you hear other birders refer to "the gull bible," this is it!!! However, don't think that this is a field guide you might want to carry in a fanny pack...it's a heavyweight!

This book is a must have for every birdwatcher! If you have problems with indentifying gulls, this is the book to have! It anwers all my questions I have about gull distribution and indentification. Now I know how to Indentify those Ring-billed Gulls that I see in the parking lot. Also I have a better outlook on where they came from as Well!

5 out of 5 stars a must for every birdwatcher and mostly seawatcher.......2005-11-30

growing up with the knowledge that there are just a few "kinds" of gulls and realising after a while that all the gulls you knew are now called somthing compleatly different (the whole herring, yellow legged, caspian, armenian, lesser black backed, sibirian etc. complex). this is the book we were all looking for, easy to use and extremly proffesional.
another good birding book to have around.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a rather massive, but useful and beautiful book on our gulls.......2005-11-04

The size and massive detail in this new book on identifying the gulls of the Northern Hemisphere is likely to deter most readers from more than a cursory leafing through its lovely paintings and photographs. But if you're curious to learn more about these common but highly varied, many-shades-of-gray birds around us, and you happen to live in a coastal area as I do, with more than a few gulls that are hard to identify during the winter, this might be a book to look into more thoroughly.

A caution though: gulls can be notoriously difficult to identify accurately, since they have so much finely detailed, age-related plumage variation. But an effort to simply knuckle-down and learn more about all this, such as this book amply provides, can pay off greatly in much greater detective-fun trying to figure out all these heretofore anonymously gray gulls sailing and prowling around us here each year. It's already helped me develop better skills in figuring out nearly all the varied groups of gulls around us here more quickly than I would have heretofore thought possible. And to more quickly decide which birds you can or cannot more accurately identify...and why.

The detailed accounts and maps of the distribution and relative abundance of various gull species have also helped me better understand where the gulls that migrate through or winter in our area are likely to have come from. And, finally, as you delve more deeply into what's known about all these gull species, and their European and Asian counterparts, it becomes obvious that the series of beautiful, comparative paintings and color photographs provided in such detail for each species in its various age-plumages, subspecies, and hybrid-forms is worth the price of the book alone.

4 out of 5 stars Parking Lot Nation.......2002-05-14

Between 1961 when Jane Jacobs and Lewis Mumford published respectively watershed critiques of Modernist urban renewal and suburbia, and 1985 when Bill Kowinski wrote "The Malling of America," almost nothing was written about the fiasco of suburban land development in America. Kowinski's excellent book re-started a national discussion about the frantic enterprise of turning America into a parking lot from sea to shining sea. It also alerted a sleepwalking citizenry (who had taken to calling themselves "consumers") to the dangers of privatizing what had traditionally been the public realm of the marketplace.
This seminal book is now republished with a fresh introduction, and not a moment too soon because America stands fully malled at the brink of an era when the infrastructure of our automobile utopia is liable to fail catastrophically. Parents should put down "Harry Potter" and read this to their children, because to them will fall the task of the de-malling of America.

_The Malling of America_ is a cutting, critical look at the consumerist nature of modern-day American society as it manifests itself in that most insidious, most ubiquitous of institutions, the shopping mall. Kowinski studies how malls operate, from their land appropriation practices to their mandatory tenant hours of operation, to give an intelligent, in-depth perspective on consumer and corporate habits in the US.

            Book Description

Terns are elegant sea and marshland birds that live throughout the world. In Europe and North America a total of twenty-three species is represented, all of which are dealt with in this book. The variations among the species and their subspecies is great, and identification is therefore often highly problematic. Terns are long-distance migrants and can be seen regularly on passage between their normal breeding and wintering areas.

Klaus Malling Olsen devotes much attention to the immature and winter plumages of these birds, which are generally inadequately described in most other field guides, while he also deals in depth with the problems of moult, species, and subspecies. The text covers the bird in the field, moult, and the bird in the hand. The author concludes each species account with extensive data on measurements and weight and an itemized key to identification. The text is accompanied by over forty color plates, which have been specially prepared for this guide by the talented Swedish bird artist Hans Larsson. The book is completed with a forty-eight-page representative photographic section.

                    Book Description

The nature of technological innovation is such that no company or nation can remain dominant forever. What is more, according to Fumio Kodama, we are entering an unprecedented age of mutual learning. In order to leverage our collective knowledge, we must create a common language to describe the innovation process. Kodama makes an invaluable contribution to that learning in Emerging Patterns of Innovation, in which he applies rigorous scientific measurement, historical perspective, and in-depth case studies to outline a model for how Japanese high-tech firms manage innovation and devise their technology strategies. The result is an analysis from which companies-and governments-all over the world can draw enduring lessons.

Kodama uses the concept of a techno-paradigm shift to express the radical changes in the way technology has been and continues to be developed, applied, and commercialized over time. In analyzing data gathered over ten years of intensive research and study of Japanese firms, he distinguishes six dimensions along which the shift is occurring: manufacturing, business diversification, R&D competition, product development, innovation pattern, and societal diffusion of technology. He illuminates his discussion of each dimension with a profile of specific technologies and the companies that have advanced them, including consumer electronics (Sony and Toshiba), fiber optic cables (Sumitomo Electric), computers and communications equipment (NEC), machine tools (Fanuc), and automobile parts (Honda, Toyota, and Nissan).

Has Japan deliberately developed its social, political, and economic environments to enable the efficient generation, innovation, and diffusion of technologies to match the techno-paradigm shift? Kodama's empirical analysis suggests the opposite -- that the techno-paradigm shift, driven by rapid evolution in science and engineering, naturally favors the Japanese system.

The concepts presented in Emerging Patterns of Innovation not only have implications for the competitive strategies of non-Japanese firms and the economic policies of their corresponding nations, but could also help promote important international alliances in technological development at both the business and the national levels. In particular, Kodama describes his vision of option sharing, through which it is possible to resolve the tensions between international cooperation and national autonomy as well as to promote a nonprotectionist, "plus-sum game" in technological innovation that would benefit the world as a whole. The Management of Innovation and Change Series.

                      Book Description

"What characterizes Kodama's work underneath is a superior grasp of the case histories of dozens of specific technologies."-David Warsh, Boston Globe. For managers seeking to understand how Japan has successfully sustained a premier position in high-technology industries, Kodoma provides a well-substantiated model that sheds light on technology competition across the globe. He examines the technology strategies of large Japanese firms, arguing that a new paradigm shift favors their system, particularly their strengths in demand articulation (involving customers in product conceptualization) and technology fusion (combining incremental improvements in ways that revolutionize markets).
