Earth Mounds Exposed.......2000-07-05
Few people are aware of the earthmound remains of Precolumbian peoples in the US. William Morgan's little book does much to change that, and in a highly readable manner. Organized by epochs, this comprehensive illustrated catalogue of over 100 important sites is a must for early-history buffs. Most important, each site is "reconstructed" and illustrated with a clear to-scale map which is at the same scale as all the other mapped reconstructions. The book is a model for such studies, as sites of interest can be quickly compared in scale with the Acropolis, the Giza pyramid complex, and other more famous sites. Highly recommended.

AN EXCELLENT REPRESENTATION OF ROTHKO'S ARTISTIC GENIUS.......2004-03-12
________________________________________________________________________________________________
I picked this book up at the Chicago Art Institute years ago and continue to enjoy referring to it. Publisher Abrams always does a good job presenting great artists in the various books in its series. I find this to be the best representation of Mark Rothko in its price group, affordable for everyone. The reproductions are excellent and provide fascinating examples of the artist's development from his earlier paintings and throughout his later work. Diane Waldman gives a good, but limited, biography - that's to be expected though, this artist's life was very complex and much has been written about him.
For those wanting a more complete catalog of oil paintings I would recommend MARK ROTHKO: THE WORKS ON CANVAS: CATALOGUE RAISONNE by David Anfam. Also, the book THE LEGACY OF MARK ROTHKO by Lee Seldes is a very absorbing/shocking biography covering the artist's life and problems, including his tragic end.
This is a 5 star book and I recommend it highly.

Book Description
Illustrates how the unprecedented improvements in living standards for average Americans over the last thirty years have led to a number of social problems today
A commonly repeated argument states that the rich have gotten richer while average Americans have broken even over the past twenty-five years, and that this economic disparity has created a number of social ills. Spoiled Rotten presents a contradictory argument: properly measured standards of well-being have grown dramatically for all Americans, resulting in a variety of negative social consequences. Now, it's not just the rich who are spoiled, it's all of us.
In developing their ideas about wealth and its influence, Goff and Fleisher look for grass-roots explanations. The problems the authors attribute to the growth in wealth include employment issues such as job selection and security, family issues such as illegitimacy and divorce, rising crime trends, educational issues such as sluggish SAT scores, and others. Further, the authors discuss how wealth has allowed Americans to create problems out of thin air, including environmental dangers, health care, and safety regulation.
The authors' final analysis poses and answers the question: what to do about wealth's negative effects without destroying its positive impacts?
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating thesis for our society.......2001-01-10
Goff and Fleischer have put succinctly into words an answer to the question, "What's wrong with America?" In the midst of prosperity and plenty for virtually all Americans, why does it appear that contemporary society is falling apart? Why are there Columbine High Schools and other, equally horrific, events occurring with frightening regularity? On a daily level we see shattered families, young girls raising babies and other disturbing events. The authors argue, persuasively, that it is primarily because we are so prosperous that we are having these ills. One reviewer missed the point entirely-in America, unlike the rest of the world all he has to worry about is getting an apartment, doubtless wonderfully made, fully equipped with all the conveniences and a huge number of true luxuries-cable tv, dvd players, etc. He drives to work in an air conditioned car and works in a pleasant environment. Hello! In this book, they make the point that even the "poverty level" family in America has access to things that are only a dream to the rest of the world. We do not work and slave just to get a mouthful of food for our family, use an open air latrine and sleep in a hovel. This is not about Gen X bashing, it's about the fact that we are spoiled and don't even know it. The great question is-what will we do about it? Get this book.
Stop the Generation X bashing! We're not so bad........1999-10-18
I'm getting tired of contemporary young Americans (I'm 29)being bashed constantly and portrayed as these evil losers. Anyone who came after the "Baby Boomer" generation (modern teens, college students and young adults) are often the objects of irrational hate. Anything our generation does wrong is hyped in the media and in preachy books like this one; even though statistics show that crime has been rapidly *decreasing* ever since Generation X came of age. We drink more espresso than liquor for goodness sake; and most drugs are pretty much out of style as far as long term use is concerned. A pretty tame bunch compared to the old hippie crowd. And the idea of today's young Americans as rich and spoiled is truly absurd. I have to wonder what planet the author is living on! No generation has worked so hard for so little. This is a time period when getting a nice little apartment for yourself is more like a far out fantasy than a realistic goal. Work hard and live paycheck to paycheck--then come home to your dingy little hole in the wall to listen to the media elite talk about how spoiled and weak you are and blame you for the Columbine massacre just because you own a few black clothes!
A dynamic entrance.......1999-04-28
Messrs Goff and Fleisher eschew the easy answers in analysing the distopia America has created with the unprecedented wealth which currently exists there. Instead, this work overturns the conventional 'wisdom' of politicians and media and asks and answers a series of questions which will become increasingly vital in C21 USA. If you've ever laughed at the idea that money doesn't buy happiness, here is the proof that it really doesn't. SimonF

Hot Notes and Sample Questions.......2007-04-04
Prepare for your California Real Estate Exam by practicing with the sample questions in this book. The Hot Notes are helpful too.
Acceptable, I guess.......2007-02-25
Here's the deal scoop on this. Lots of repeated questions, at least one blatantly wrong answer, and some ambiguous questions that will make you feel stupid for not getting it when in fact it's just a stupid question. A lot of times the author gets lazy and will provide the following explanation as to why the answer is correct: "statement of fact". Gee that doesn't help too much.
I guess you can get this book if you like tough love, meaning, it MAY teach you by abusing you.
Not a book for you if you don't already know the material. Only get it if you need sample questions.
Not perfect but pretty darn good!.......2006-10-09
I agree with a little of what each person has written below. The Hot Notes are super helpful. Memorize them. The practice tests are VERY helpful. Do them! And there will probably be some of those questions on your real exam, because there were on mine.
That being said, some of the practice questions are worded vaguely or seem to contain conflicting info with the Real Estate Principles book (the basis for the CA exam). However, I tried using another book (How to Pass the CA Real Estate Exam and Dramatically Improve Your Score by Huber) and was almost in tears of relief when I realized I had also bought this book by Lush. The other book's exams were so convoluted and NOT related to the material, that it made me appreciate Lush's book all the more.
The only thing I will say is that the math section in this book is weak. The other book I just referred to had a really strong math section, which gave me confidence when taking the test. But, had I not used this (Minnie Lush's) book, I wouldn't have passed my exam on the first try.... which I did!!
Finally, about the exam, it's NOT easy. But it's NOT unreasonably difficult either. I knew the Principles book backwards and forwards, but there were still 11 questions on the test on material that I'd never heard of. But, since you can miss 45 questions and still pass, that's not a big deal. I worked steadily and did the math questions as they came up. On my scratch paper, I made a list of the Qs I wasn't sure about and/or didn't answer, then went back and looked at those when I had finished with all the questions. That way, I was able to gauge how many questions I had thought I'd answered correctly. All told, I was out of there in 2 hours' time. I give credit to knowing the Principles book really well (I read it twice and outlined it on my own) and having used this study book. I did self-study, no schools or seminars, so it CAN be done!
Harder than it needs to be.......2006-08-14
I passed the California Sales Exam on my first try using this book and the Learning Express Exam Guide. The sample tests in this book were so difficult that I only got over 70% on one of them. I was really worried. I read the Hot Tips twice but was concerned that I hadn't thoroughly memorized them. The most intimidating part was the math. Some of the answers were two paragraphs long and contained several steps. My other exam guide was so much easier that it confused me. I really didn't know what to expect. When I took the exam, I didn't encounter any math that was more than two to three steps. I think this guide is useful if you want to really challenge your brain. But, it seems much more complicated than the actual exam it's preparing you for. I also spent $47 on the California Real Estate Exam Guide Software disc by Minnie Lush (Dearborn) that has the same material. I would take a test in the book, read the answers, then take the same sample test again on disc.
The most important for me when taking the sales exam was to go through it once and answer everything I knew for sure. I saved all the math questions and did them at once. I went through the exam a second time and answered everything else. Don't leave any questions unanswered. Good luck!
Used it, Passed the exam. What more can I say?.......2004-09-19
Book is only good as the reader. If you find this book to be a waste of time and money, then so be it. Find another book. Good luck with your exam.
As for me, I used it along with 2 different exam guide books and found this one from Minnie Lush to be the most helpful. In fact, there were about 25 problems in the actual exam that were exactly the same as the ones I solved in this book. When you purchase this book, go through all 10 prep exams and memorize all the problems you answered WRONG. Those that you answered wrong will most likely to be in the actual exam. Actual exam is NOT a piece of cake. You actually have to work at it to pass it. Furthermore, HOT NOTES in the book are very helpful. Memorize them all.
Advice to all the examinees..... When taking the exam, don't worry about all the problems you are not sure about. Exam is set up so that you will lose confidence and even doubt yourself from the START. That's right... FROM THE START!!! Just remember this.. "Make sure to find 100 questions you can answer without any shred of doubt what so ever. As for the balance 45 problems, even if you choose "C" or "D" on all of them, you should at least get 10-15 of them right, which means you pass.
I hope this helps.

Customer Reviews:
Helped me pass the test the 1st time!.......2006-12-29
I thoroughly studied this book before taking the exam and passed the 1st time. This was the only study aid I used due to time constraints. Regarding the review from the lady that says that the book didn't give the questions EXACTLY, she probably found the test difficult because she blindly memorized the answers rather than learning the concepts behind them. A few questions on the test were identical, but if you know the concepts, you will pass the test with little difficulty.
Frustrating.......2006-10-17
Haven't taken the licensing exam yet, so I can't provide much insight into how helpful this book will be as to passing the test, but it has been a very frustrating read on several levels. Words are consistently misspelled ("principle" when they mean "principal"), words or whole phrases left out of questions so you have to guess at what is being asked, and even flat out wrong answers ("none of the above" when they meant "all of the above"). WORD TO EDITOR: next time you revise the book, have someone proofread it!
Didn't Prepare Me!.......2005-02-26
I THOUGHT this book was good until I went to take the California RE Exam three days ago in Los Angeles ... The tone and content of this prep book was only about 50% in alignment with the actual test -- I felt cheated and that this book was out of touch and did NOT adequately prepare me for the test.

California Real Estate Sales Exam CompuCram Exam Prep Software.......2006-08-05
I passed! This software was very helpful. All of the questions are multiple choice and an explanation is given after each answered question. The questions are grouped by categories which really makes it easy to keep focused. The software keeps a score of your correct answers and you can clear it at any time. There are over 350 review questions in addition to practice exams. I felt very confident after only completing the review portion. I found a few incorrect answers, but overall the content was very good. For further detail and in-depth explanations, I referred to my many real estate textbooks. I appreciated being able to review on my own time and interactively rather than just reading from a book. Thumbs up for this software!

Taking the Cal Real Estate Exam? Look elsewhere........2004-05-05
If you are trying to study or cram for the California Real Estate Exam (Salesagent; not Broker's exam), DO NOT use this book as the main study material. Instead use this book only as a supplementary study guide. Look for "Final Exams"
by Thomas E. Felde. This is the best study material for helping with your R.E. exam. I used CALIFORNIA REAL ESTATE SALES EXAM
by Learning Express for about 1 month and for the last few weeks, I used "FINAL EXAMS; by Felde" and I passed. FINAL EXAMS; by Felde are past Cal R.E. exams broken up into 8 different exams. Those questions are way tougher than "CALIFORNIA REAL ESTATE SALES EXAMS" and they are what you'll see on your Cal. R.E. exam. I swear they had 10-15 questions repeated and identical to Felde's Final Exam. None of LEARNING EXPRESS's questions were on the Cal R.E. exam I took on April 17th 2004.
Good Math Section!.......2003-12-06
I am a bit surprised some rated this book so low.
I haven't taken the State Exam yet, but I have just finished a Real Estate Principles class at a local junior college.
There are four sample exams. I have found the questions in the book to be a little on the easy side compared to another exam preparation disc I acquired. But they are good review, and there is a middle section that is a mini-refresher course on real estate principles. I found the refresher quite helpful.
The best part, if you are math-challenged like myself, is the math review section. It lays out how to do math problems (even with a calculator) in as concise and clear a way as I have ever seen -- percentages, fractions -- assessment, appraisal, insurance, commission, etc. And it also has a "short cut" that I have never seen before but which works everytime. I am now confident that can do most of the math problems that will come up on the exam. A feeling I did not have before.
If you want to cover all bases exam-question-wise, it's probably best to have at least two sources of practice exam questions, this, and another book or disc.
But, for me, the math review section alone is worth the price.
The Best Book Ever!!!.......2003-07-19
This is the best book I have ever purchased from amazon.com. In fact, I'd say it is the best book I've ever read, hands down, even better than Tropic of Cancer. I bought it for my daughter Sandy, whose dream is to become a real estate agent, and she almost passed the exam. If only she had spelled her name right, she would be the best little real estate agent west of the Mississippi!
Don't waste your dollars.......2002-07-01
I didn't buy this book, not knowing the quality of the materials and saving ... Instead I borrowed from a public library. I spent innumerable hours studying and scoring 80% of the questions provided, including the useless CDROM. But I failed the exam. Some information is rather defunct and confusing. I personally don't recommend this title, and it needs to be taken off shelves.
Outdated!.......2002-05-26
I read the book, took the practice exams in the book and spent coutless hours with the CD. I was scoring over 90%. I took the State exam. Boy, was I suprised! Waste of time--except for the math. The math part was very helpful. It gives an easy way to set up your problems--and they were right! But, they need to update the questions. I failed the test. I retook the test after checking into some of the literature that a person gets after applying to take the State exam--and I passed. Checkout Chamberlin RE School, or Allied RE School (on
line). You will pass....
