Book Description
Often described as Prince Charles's favorite architect, Quinlan Terry is at home in every traditional style, from Classical Greek to Roman, Gothic to Renaissance, and Baroque to Neo-classical. With intense new interest in classical design, there is a high demand for a compilation of Terry's work, a volume that showcases the ideas and creations of one of the world's most daring traditionalist designers. At the pinnacle of his career—this year's winner of the Driehaus Prize, classical architecture's highest honor—Quinlan Terry is one of the most celebrated practitioners of the form and also perhaps the most radical. Radical Classicism contains hundreds of lavish color illustrations and thirty of Terry's designs, including state rooms at #10 Downing Street, a library and residential building at Cambridge University, a cathedral in Essex, a church in Bishopsgate, four buildings in Williamsburg, Va., townhouses in London, and ten large country houses in England, Germany, and the U.S. Buildings featured include Juniper Hill in Buckinghamshire; Ionic Villa, Corinthian Villa, and Regency Villa in Regents Park, London; Abercrombie House in Kentucky; Latourette Farm, New Jersey; Highland Park House, Dallas, Texas.
Customer Reviews:
classic architecture is always new.......2007-01-04
This book is a must for anyone who loves good and beautiful architecture. Modernist and mediocre architects built much rubbish these days, but Qinlan and Francis Terry are one of the few good architect of our time.
Even in their small and modest buildings you can see what good stile and knowledge can achieve, eben with a limited budget.
PROOF THAT CLASSICAL MODERN IS NOT AN OXYMORON.......2006-09-27
Quinlan Terry's work is just amazing; the attention to detail and the craftmanship sets the benchmark. I am familiar with his work in Dallas and was just blown away when i saw it; his work stands out, it just has elan. This book does he and his creations great service; the text is easy to read, yet well researched and eriudite and the images are crisp and first rate. If you have any interest in great modern classical architecture or just appreciate beautiful books in general then i can't conceive of you not being pleased with this purchase. Highly recommended.
Quinlan Terry, The Work af a Truly Master Builder .......2006-08-02
A beautifully produced book that explains the philosophy of Quinlan Terry and how he applies neo-classical design to meet modern needs without compromising the accuracy of the classical detail designs to which his dedication is paramount. The like ability and dedication of his son Francis, who is already carrying on the craft of his father, is shown with stunning effect.
The book is easy to read and engages the reader so that it is hard to put down. It is not just a book to dip in and out of, albeit it also lends itself to such a practice.
It demonstrates that Quinlan Terry and his son are Master Builders in the true sense of the words.
It shows how their understanding and appreciation of the detailed construction required to produce their buildings puts most architects to shame, together with their incredible skill with a pencil, which most modern architects also cannot match or even execute.
The book gives a facinating insight into the way they cleverly apply a wide range of classical features into their buildings; and also how they refer in their designs to more recent uses of neo-classical design by other masters of their art .
The book is most impressive in the way it describes the complete dedication of Quinlan Terry for the positive, classical accuracy and precision in his designs , together with the explanation of how his own interpretation for each new building has been conceived, without merely repeating past classical building designs.
The book also touches on Quinlan Terry's lone struggle to fight off the intransient modernists who are unable to recognise that classical design is usually more permanent, more ecologically friendly, easier and safer to maintain and often more relevant to many environments and circumstances than the unyielding modernist approach to architecture, which can be so ugly, irrelevant and egotistical.
The quality of the heavyweight glossy paper, reproduction of the intricate drawings and photos is second to none.
A wonderful book to enjoy and treasure for ever.
New Buildings in a Traditional Style.......2006-06-14
Quinlan Terry, who works with his son Francis, is probably the best known classical architect working today. His buildings have covered just about every sub-set of classical architecture: Greek, Roman, Gothic, Penaissance and more. (Indeed, I'm not so sure just how many sub-sets their are.)
This remarkable book shows the range of Mr. Terry's work in over 250 full color photographs and numerous drawings or sketches that illustrate the unbelievablly wide range of work. The buildings shown have been built around the world from Dallas to Berlin. There is no prevailing style, some of the houses are so different that you find it hard to believe that they are the work of the same architect.
In addition to buildings, there are some projects that are internal, official state rooms and No. 10 Downing Street for instance. And some of the buildings have photographs of the interior, especially the entryway that you see when first entering the building.
This book is both a history and an idea book of a style that never went away.

Book Description
Over the last 30 or 40 years a substantial literature has grown up in which the tools of economic theory and analysis have been applied to problems in the arts and culture. Economists who have surveyed the field generally locate the origins of contemporary cultural economics as being in 1966, the year of publication of the first major work in modern times dedicated specifically to the economics of the arts. It was a book by Baumol and Bowen which showed that economic analysis could illuminate the supply of and demand for artistic services, the contribution of the arts sector to the economy, and the role of public policy. Following the appearance of the Baumol and Bowen work, interest in the economics of the arts grew steadily, embracing areas such as demand for the arts, the economic functions of artists, the role of the nonprofit sector, and other areas. Cultural economics also expanded to include the cultural or entertainment industries (the media, movies, the publishing industry, popular music), as well as heritage and museum management, property right questions (in particular copyright) and the role of new communication technologies such as the internet.
The field is therefore located at the crossroads of several disciplines: economics and management, but also art history, art philosophy, sociology and law. The Handbook is placed firmly in economics, but it also builds bridges across these various disciplines and will thus be of interest to researchers in all these different fields, as well as to those who are engaged in cultural policy issues and the role of culture in the development of our societies.
*Presents an overview of the history of art markets
*Addresses the value of art and consumer behavior toward acquiring art
*Examines the effect of art on economies of developed and developing countries around the world

Customer Reviews:
Average.......2006-05-20
The confession of the American Idol is filled with useful information for the beginner in the music industry. The musician, the song writer, the producer , they are all going to find all the information they need for a successful launch in the music industry. The advice of this experienced man may be considered priceless, the producer has had a lot of experience in the business and what he says may be golden. The book has an easy structure with easy to read fragments and will help propel you to stardom.
Entertaining, but not insightful........2006-05-16
This book seems to exist for the sole purpose of making Jackson some cash. While it doesnt contain any actual advice for obtaining stardom, it is entertaining to read. If you want an actual guide on breaking in to the industry, do check out "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen.
Good book for aspiring singers.......2004-09-13
I recall that this book came out several months back, but I never got it. Randy Jackson's book is much better than Simon Cowell's book. He even talks to experts, even agents, producers, record company people, two American Idol finalists and now artists, and songwriters. Would have liked it if he interviewed an already successful multi-platinum selling artist like Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Usher or Jay-Z, but he could only get those who were available. He does overdo the "dawg" thing a little too much in the book, but that's his persona. A lot of my music collection consists of albums that Randy performed on, and for that alone he is a true talent in the best word. This is a long-overdue, much needed book for aspiring singers out there. To those people, don't be surprised if I hear your first album on an open lonely interstate highway and moving to the melodies, rhythms, beats, and sounds of it. And you will credit Randy's book for getting you out there in the business. Randy's book is so well written.
RJ is a fat worthless idiot like Dr. Phil.......2004-06-25
Randy Jackson is the most annoying person on TV. While Simon is entertaining and Paula is cute, Randy is a complete buffoon. This book was written with one thing on his mind... money. This book has no inside info on the entertainment industry and has no insight for those seeking fame and fortune as entertainers. Instead what we have is an egotistical jerk who brags about his success while never admitting he doesn't do anything. If you admire a man who helped bring us the likes of Mariah Carey and NSYNC, go ahead and waste your money because you're an idiot too.
THE BARK IS BIGGER THAN THE BITE.......2004-03-23
I have tremendous respect for Randy Jackson. I've met him and he's one of the most genuine guys you could ever talk to in the music business. He's affable, smart, and an unlikely author.
His book will appeal to, and have the greatest use by teenagers. It's simple, conversational tone will appeal to music artists in general who like easy to read material.
Of particular interest (and what I felt are the highlights of the book) are the interviews that Randy conducts with American Idol winner, Ruben Studdard and various top notch industry professionals.
This book is NOT about becoming a superstar; so don't expect to have a road map to superstardom after you read this book, but you will have a much greater appreciation of the depth and experience of Randy Jackson.
