In the first part of the book, David Silverman presents a brief history of the University of Pennsylvania Museum as well as fieldwork and excavations done in Egypt and Nubia; and Donald Redford gives a general overview of Ancient Egyptian history. The second part consists of a catalogue which provides a description of objects, along with a photograph and further reading. Featured objects are those of divine art (essay by Arielle Kozloff), royal art (Edna Russmann), private art (Rita Freed), architecture (David O'Connor), personal and domestic artifacts (Edward Brovarski), funerary arts (William K. Simpson) and Nubian art (Josef W. Wegner). Recommended, this book is for those needing to learn more on Ancient Egyptian art.

There is growing concern over the conservation and management of European wet grasslands. The maintenance of the European wet grassland landscape, including floodplain meadows and coastal grazing marshes or pastures, through traditional low-intensity farming has conserved a habit supporting internationally important plant and animal communities, including many rare species. However,land use changes such as flood defence, land drainage, agricultural intensification and neglect have caused a considerable reduction in the extent and biodiversity of European wet grasslands. The international importance of the habitat for biodiversity conservation has recently been recognised with its inclusion in the European Union Habitats and Species Directive and the Convention on Biological Diversity fostered by the United Nations. This volume thoroughly examines European perspectives of wet grassland ecology in order to encourage an integrated approach to contemporary issues. We examined the occurrence of Dactylorhiza majalis, the most abundant terrestrial orchid species growing in rapidly disappearing wet meadows, at 50 historical sites for 3 years. We aimed to find the most frequent reasons for its recent extinction at many sites. We found that the main reasons for its extinction were absence of mowing, intensive fertilisation and washouts of fertilisers from fields nearby. At extant sites, we studied its biometric characteristics and composition of surrounding vegetation, to determine factors affecting its persistence. Bad performance of persisting populations of this species was associated with prevalence of grasses, low May temperatures and absence of mowing. This confirms, at metapopulation level, what has previously been observed at the level of individual populations. We suggest that the system of agricultural subsidies in the country should change towards more sensitive allocation of funds to those farmers, who will adopt the appropriate management of wet meadows and their surroundings.

The Wet Tropics of North Queensland are characterised by a mixture of natural and agricultural landscapes that exist side-by-side. The need for greater protection of the Great Barrier Reef, a declining sugar industry and increasing pressures to subdivide agricultural land for urban expansion provide great challenges for the people in the Wet Tropics, but also for planners, natural resource managers and policy makers. To create pathways for planning sustainable landscapes in the Wet Tropics, a social-ecological framework has been developed and evaluated using two case studies. The aim of this paper is to describe the rationale for developing this social-ecological framework and its three stages. We also describe a range of participatory tools for engaging local people (including farmers, industry representatives, interest groups, indigenous people, and decision-makers) throughout the planning process. Evidence from the case studies suggests that the inclusion of the social dimension of landscape, and the participatory activities that are an integral part of the framework, provide opportunities for social learning and capacity building. These activities in essence contribute to the development of sustainable future landscapes.

Wildi Rules!.......2001-06-14

If you are interested in owning, collecting, operating Hasselblad cameras, then you really need to have a copy of this! To my knowledge, Ernst Wildi is one of the most respected authorities in medium format photography and one of the gurus in Hasselblad history. Just about everything one needs to know about using any "Hassy" or "'blad", new or old, is in this book. It includes how-to on accessories, lenses, film backs - you name it! This makes a great reference. Wildi's style is easy to read, intelligent but not arrogant, and mostly done from the perspective of a teacher or coach. Wildi is an excellent photographer, by the way! So, curl up in your easy chair with your beautiful Hasselblad in your lap, and read about its pedigree and how you can make beautiful pictures!

Good overview of Hasselblad system........1999-05-29

This is a fine book and worth reading for the Hasselblad owner, at least once. The author makes an effort to cover every aspect of using a Hasselblad. In general, the author achieves success.

One of my favorite parts of this book is the macro photography guide. Here the author describes, in a clear and concise way, the details of what extension tube and/or closeup filter has what effect on the subject field width and exposure compensation. This alone makes owning this book a good idea as a reference for the serious professional.

One aspect of using the Hasselblad I was not able to fully grasp from the book was how to unload a film back. I guess the author just assumes you know what to do, as he never gives instructions as to how many turns on the film back crank you must make to fully bring the trailer onto the takeup reel. Myself, I thought three or four turns was enough, foolishly. Having jammed the camera in front of 100 guests at a fashionable Washington DC society wedding taught me otherwise. It was good thing I had a rangefinder from Fuji handy and ready to go, and the job came out well in the end.

Another reviewer says Hasselblads are costly. My experience is that they are a valuable tool in a profitable business; hold their value reasonably well; leak light; break down often; require costly, tentative maintenance and take nice photographs. Get this book if you want to learn about Hasselblad.

This book is okay for the novice Hasselblad user, of which I am one. Since it tries to be all things to all people, you have to wade through a lot to find what you are looking for. More than a bit pricy for what it is.

Very dissapointing!.......2005-01-05

I bought this based upon other reviews. I was grossly dissapointed. This book is a product of the 60s - 70s that's been added to as Hassleblad releases new lines. How can a $60 USD book on Hasselblad contain NO photographs of any Hasselblad equipment? It's all line drawings and the better part of them are relatively primative based on today's standards.

The book does cover most of the body lines and accessories. But I found the narrative to be brief and the accompanying illustrations to be difficult to see - especially for the older gear. The book covers some technique but I didn't buy this book to learn technique. If you've ever used a Magic Lantern camera guide you'll think you've bought an antique with this book. I immediately returned this book.

This is a great book if you have new or nearly new hasselblad equipment. Example of lack of details are very little information about the older prisem finders and he does not even mention the 21 mm extension tube, which by the way works great with my 80 cf lens.

He sounds like he works for Hasselblad often mentions you should upgrade your equipment.

Did have a good section on flash and exposure though. I am now looking to buy an older book from ebay that covers the older hasselblad stuff with proper details.

The standard Hasselblad book.......2004-06-21

Hasselblad cameras have good and bad points. The good points are that they are, through longevity and marketing as well as other qualities, the standard in pro medium format photography, and Hasselblad system items can be rented worldwide: they are reasonably durable, have good optical quality, and lots of system accessories are available. No other medium format system boasts a fifth of all the various items available for the Hasselblad system. Because they are the standard most photographers understand them. Because working pros favor them, prestiege buyers, wannabes, and dilettantes do so as well.

The downside is that they are heavy, noisy, expensive (especially for the lenses which are not so much better than their Japanese counterparts), and can be damaged easily by careless or untutored handling: they are somewhat awkward: and their 6x6 cm format is simply out of sync with standard print sizes (with a 1.2:1 aspect ratio) or 35mm practice (1.5:1), leading to never utilizing the whole negative in practice.

This volume is to all intents and purposes the official unofficial Hasselblad manual of practice. You are getting "100% Standard Tech" here:this is the fountainhead of Hasselblad doctrine. If you've committed to using Hasselblad cameras the Hasselblad way, this book shows you how to do it. You won't find any criticism of any current Hasselblad equipment or any objective "vis-a-vis" here.

If you are looking into whether or not you should choose Hassselblad, this book is essential provided you keep the above in mind. Other books will provide information on other systems. Hasselblad is definitely not for everyone, even everyone without financial impediments to doing so. Large format, 35mm, other MF SLRs and the classic twin lens reflex are all better choices for some uses-and users. However, if you want a visually conspicuous status symbol, it's tough to go very wrong with Hasselblad.

Excellent.......2004-02-08

This is a thorough review of the Hasselblad system and a great book on general photography as well. It is particularly useful for someone who has a basic camera system and plans to rent additional components as needed. The only criticism is that the illustrations (often wonderful color and black and white photographs by Mr. Wildi) are not referenced directly in the captions. Rather than using "Top, Left, Right, Upper Left "etc., the captions state "the other" image. What other image? You can figure it out fairly quickly, but this needs changing in future additions. I blame the editors.

Perhaps Mr. Wildi could write a section on studio lighting, flash metering and the Visatec system in the next addition as well?

Thank you Mr. Wildi for this wonderful book. It serves as a reference manual, is a joy to read, and is aesthetically enriching: A work of art.
