Gorgeous Idea Book for a Second Home.......2007-04-05
What a visual feast this is! The summer porches, the relaxed living rooms, the arched windows featuring an ocean view or framing the forest. I wanted to move right into one of these second homes now.
Although it makes an effort at helping you with decision making (what's your style, crowds vs solitude, how near/how far?), it's strength is showing samples of individual homes. These vignettes tell how it's used, challenges they faced and show off the home's spaces and views in large colorful photos.
Great browsing if you just want to dream or inspiring ideas to copy in your own second home (or even the first one). Most of the decorating styles featured lean more to relaxed contemporary or touches of country and shabby chic.
Wow!!!! This is my favorite book!.......2006-07-19
I read every book about Interior Design, second homes, country homes and cottages. I have read and reread this beautiful book. It is absolutly wonderful! Enjoy!
Simple, Ordinary Decorating.......2006-04-28
The homes and interiors all look ordinary, in simple, few decorations. I didn't get any interesting new ideas from most of these photos. I mainly saw different building styles and wood colors. At least 50% of them look just like first homes, I just couldn't tell any difference.
For interiors (furniture) Not Interiors (space).......2003-05-12
This book is a decent resource for a person furnishing their first or second home, but it's not a good manual for creating your second home. The photograph angles capture walls, windows, and furnishings, but fail to show the quality of the living space. There are very few exterior photographs and many of them appear to be from the 3/4 angle. There are no floor plans or building details. If you're looking for interior decorating ideas, this is a decent reference. If you're looking for creative planning ideas for building your first or second home, you'll want a more comprehensive reference.
Like a little vacation.......2003-01-07
Getting this book for Christmas was a blessing. Just opening it is like taking a vacation. Sumptuous photos are a delight. Practical information is included as well.
Book Description
With his spiritually-inclined philosophy and his decision to establish his career in rural Pennsylvania, Japanese-American furniture designer George Nakashima has always existed within a mythology of craftsmanship that celebrates regionalism and the handmade. Yet, as this catalogue shows, he also belongs within the practice of mid-century European modernism, amongst a roster of artists including Charlotte Perriand, Carlo Mollino, Jean Prouve, Alexandre Noll, and Finn Juhl, with whom he shared a respect for that which is visible in the details. Details, as they all knew, reveal a belief that materials and construction are not only functional, but are also aesthetic, complex, and precise.

Book Description
Perhaps no nation has been so thoroughly shaped by its dreams as has America, and perhaps no other dreams have been captured on camera as often and as diversely as America's. The mythic American Dream has been the subject of photographic documentation since the 1840s, when photographers first began traveling to the New World in search of subjects. From an unknown photographer's picture of newborn George B. Billings Rego, scion of an immigrant Portuguese family and the first child ever born at Boston Long Wharf, to Lewis Hine's wrenching image of a young cotton mill worker in Georgia, to Alfred Stieglitz's awesome New York cityscapes, the photographs collected here reveal the multiple facets of 100 of the most decisive years of American development. Between 1840 and 1940, immigrants became homeowners, untouched lands exploded in superhuman industrial growth, tourists replaced pioneers, and the American metropolis grew taller and shinier--and the camera caught it all.

Book Description
Providing adequate, accessible, and affordable housing is a major problem affecting many African countries. Focusing on the West African country of Ghana, Konadu-Agyemang explores the urban housing question in light of current development theories. He concludes that it would be naive to see Ghana's housing crisis primarily as a result of political instability or economic mismanagement. Instead, the author argues that economic and social problems in Africa are products of the structural distortions created by colonialism and the draining of African resources to European countries. The postcolonial continuation of relations of dependency has led to underdevelopment, which is manifested in malformed urban areas characterized by housing shortages, slum environments, and atrophied infrastructures. Konadu-Agyemang concludes that affordable housing in Ghana will only occur with the implementation of policies aimed at decreasing Ghana's dependence on imported building materials and standards. Solutions to the housing crisis in Ghana require remedies to both the internal constraints that impede development and the inequities in the global economy that foster dependency and neo-colonialism.

Book Description
In recent years, the U.S. housing market has been characterized by rapid changes in housing prices, quality, and availability. This handbook is a highly readable examination of the various theories that have been advanced to explain the economic behavior of today's housing market. Emphasis is put on developing an understanding of the sophisticated economics underlying the market, thus enabling the reader to carry this knowledge over into a rapidly changing marketplace. The book begins with a brief look at the historical development of U.S. housing markets and government intervention in these markets. The study goes on to develop a conceptual framework that can be used to evaluate the effects of the economic environment and government policy on the housing market. Throughout the book, real-world data is employed to verify and illustrate the major points of the presentation.

Book Description
Social scientists and planners frequently ignore historical findings. Conversely, urban historians may fail to consider work in other disciplines or the needs of planners. Designed to bridge these gaps, Modern Industrial Cities brings together prominent urbanists, historians, sociologists, planners, economists, political scientists, geographers, and policy-makers from throughout the US and Europe. Provocative interdisciplinary essays cast new light on essential issues of urban history -- and its critical implications for policy-making.
'...it is a fascinating volume, filled with passing insights into both policy and historiography. The Commentary following each section is particularly useful, as well as are the introductory comments by Stave. This book is highly recommended for all urban geographers interested in contemplating the 'whys' behind the distribution of cities and the location of people within metropolitan areas.' -- Urban Geography, Vol 4 No 1, 1983
'...it is a valuable report on the state of urban history and its relation to public history.' -- The Public Historian

Book Description
This clear, lucid and richly illustrated study, based on a formidable amount of new archival research, explores the physical transformation of Edinburgh in the nineteenth century. Richard Rodger's powerful book shows how landowners, builders and investors pursued their own agendas and in doing so reshaped the Victorian towns and cities that the twentieth century inherited. Historians--whether political, urban, economic, social or legal--will find challenging new insights here, which have a resonance far beyond the confines of one city.
Book Description
This book examines the notion of "free trade" and the issues raised by adopting the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Essays by Ralph Nader, Jerry Brown, William Greider, Margaret Atwood, Mark Ritchie, Wendell Berry, Pat Choate, and others.

Page 1 The forture 200's GATT and NAFTA would make the air you breath dirtier and the water you drink more polluted. It would cost jobs, depress wages levels, and make work place less safe.It would destroy family farms and undermine cosumer protections such as those ensuring that the food you eat is not compromised by unsanitary conditions or higher levels of pesticides and perservatives.
Page164 One reason for the decline of grain farming was the importation of grain into Rome from the rich grain lands of sicily and EgyptIn sicily these grain land lands had been appropriated by rich men and scheming politicians who farm them with slave labor. As a result the markets of Rome were flooded with cheap grain.Grain became so cheap that the farmers who still owned small pieces of land could not get enough money for the grain they raised to support their familes and pay their taxes. They were forced to to turn their farms over to rich landowners. On the land of Italy slave gangs working under overseers took the place of the old Roman farmer, the very backbone of the state, etc EMINENT DOMAIN,DEPRESSION,POPULACE MOVEMENT US 1930ties and before.Federal Reserve UNCONSTITUTIONAL .Recession ,depression.inflation,International Bankers they are the fairy

Compelling, for unusual reasons.......2004-05-17
The proponents of free trade have had at their disposal a convincing and, often times, quite believable theory to describe the way that the world functions. As a liberal, I have frequently wanted to reject all the theoretical underpinnings of free trade. I've spent many hours trying to fill their theory with holes. At the same time, as an economics major and free thinker, it's just not been tenable for me to disregard modern economic theory. There are no alternatives that could take the theory's place in effectiveness, or in accuracy. In sum, I picked up this book at a time when what I wanted to believe did not gel with what I was compelled to believe, academically.
This book does not explicitly offer a "third way" that could substitute for capitalism or socialism. And as might be expected, the authors make a big deal out of the bad things that come with economic liberalism. The "Race to The Bottom" is mentioned quite often. In this sense, there's not much new here. Read Soros, Stiglitz, Greider, or even Wallerstien - you'll find a lot of the same thing.
What is unique about this book, and why I am giving it five stars, is that the book added a new dimension to the context of my discontent with the current "system." More exactly: the alternative theory that could come out of this book pales to liberalism; much of the liberal thought about economics has to do with values, and it not often as compelling as the official theory; and while this book emphasizes values to a great deal (state sovereignty, for example) it tends to emphasize values that are much more axiomatic. For example: The authors describe how the specifics of NAFTA were not made readily and directly available to the public; and even once they were, the document was so convoluted and inaccessible that hardly anyone bothered to read it.
This example (there are many others) is useful to me because it does not necessitate e a conflict with liberalism. In other words: It may be true that free trade works best. I don't want to believe that, I am compelled nevertheless to believe that, but no matter what I believe about free trade, I am positive that trade agreements should be made available to the public (quickly, cheaply, and in a language that can be understood). Values are still involved. But the answers to the "value questions" are answered axiomatically, for most of us. This book is unique and valuable (no pun) for the reason that it criticizes free trade in a way that (1) the criticism will either be accepted or rejected immediately, and (2) the criticism is not contradictory, and may be useful, to the liberalist's theory that has been so difficult to dethrone.
It'll Change your Mind.......2000-11-30
This is an excellent book written by some of the leading authorities on NAFTA and GATT (Including Ralph Nader). Each "chapter" written by a different person is short and to the point. You can read as much or as little as you want, without feeling the need to finish the chapter. This book WILL make you sweat with anger at points. It is an excellent read.
