    Book Description

Architect Stanley Saitowitz has designed a great number of projects that share the qualities of early modern architecture: they are unassuming, simple, honest, anti-classical, anti-elite. Inspired by the seminal works of Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Giuseppe Terragni, Saitowitz has developed an approach he calls "human geography," an attitude that is carefully cognizant of the relationship between architecture and setting. This monograph, the first on Stanley Saitowitz Office, presents fifty projects from more than thirty years of practice.

The work is divided by building type. The bar houses are Saitowitz's reconsideration of a modern prototype: bars of space, which the architect calls "houses of constructed emptiness," that measure but do not interrupt the terrain. Urban houses—both affordable, multifamily housing and single-family lofts—are indeterminate in relation to plan, free in regard to program, and express a volumetric quality within their dense city settings. Also featured in the monograph are schools and a series of designs that explore the formation of Jewish architecture: the Holocaust Memorial in Boston, a menorah for the Jewish Museum in San Francisco, and synagogues in La Jolla and San Francisco.

This spare, elegant, and small-scale monograph of the entire oeuvre of San Francisco-based architect Stanley Saitowitz is the only volume of his work available. The book begins with a survey of Saitowitz's early career in his native South Africa, and also presents the architect's most recent projects, including his award-winning design for the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston. Each project is illustrated with striking black-and-white photographs, followed by a special section including Saitowitz's personal thoughts and descriptions about his projects and architecture in general. It is interesting to learn, for instance, that he thinks of architecture less as a rarefied art form and more like cooking: "This establishes very real conditions," he notes. "No one thinks rotten food amusing." The icing on the cake is a postscript by Lars Lerup.

        Book Description

This new monograph presents the work of San Francisco-based architect?Stanley Saitowitz. Comprehensive in scope, it begins with his earliest?work in South Africa (see A House in?the Transvaal) and continues up to his recent projects, including?the California Museum of Photography in Riverside, Mill Race Park in?Columbus, Indiana (see Design With the?Land), and the award-winning design for the New England Holocaust?Memorial, to be built next to the Boston City Hall.?

?Saitowitz's dynamic designs -- at once modern and?organic -- have been the subject of numerous exhibitions,?this is the first time Saitowitz's work has been gathered together in a?single volume. As Lars Lerup wittily suggests in his postscript about the?double initials of the architect, Saitowitz's work embodies "the legacy of?nature -- the swirl, the slither, the curl, the twist, the?surge, the eddy, the gyration. Out of the grass into Saitowitz's plans?they come to stake their claim in the domain of artifice."?

?Saitowitz was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has been in practice?in San Francisco since 1975. He has held teaching posts at numerous?schools, including the Eliot Noyes Professorship at the Harvard GSD. He is?currently a Professor of Architecture at the University of California at?Berkeley.?

?Stanley Saitowitz, beautifully illustrated throughout with duotones?and drawings of built work, includes a poetic textual interpretation of?the art of architecture by Saitowitz as well as an introduction by Michael?Bell and a postscript by Lars Lerup.?

?A House in the Transvaal presents a complete history of the Brebnor?House, completed in 1978 by Stanley Saitowitz in the Highveld of South?Africa between Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is illustrated with early?conceptual sketches, working drawings, color airbrush presentation?drawings, and complete photographic documentation of construction and of?the finished building.?

?Influenced by the inventive and colorful artifacts and buildings of the?N'debele people, the industrial building vernacular of South African?mines, the forms and ideas of Duchamp and Cage, and a love of the African?landscape, Saitowitz's building melds past and present, place and idea.?

                      Book Description

This volume makes available some of the most exciting research currently underway into Greek society after Liberation. Together, its essays map a new social history of Greece in the 1940s and 1950s, a period in which the country grappled--bloodily--with foreign occupation and intense civil conflict.

Extending innovative historical approaches to Greece, the contributors explore how war and civil war affected the family, the law, and the state. They examine how people led their lives, as communities and individuals, at a time of political polarization in a country on the front line of the Cold War's division of Europe. And they advance the ongoing reassessment of what happened in postwar Europe by including regional and village histories and by examining long-running issues of nationalism and ethnicity. Previously neglected subjects--from children and women in the resistance and in prisons to the state use of pageantry--yield fresh insights.

By focusing on episodes such as the problems of Jewish survivors in Salonika, memories of the Bulgarian occupation of northern Greece, and the controversial arrest of a war criminal, these scholars begin to answer persistent questions about war and its repercussions. How do people respond to repression? How deep are ethnic divisions? Which forms of power emerge under a weakened state? When forced to choose, will parents sacrifice family or ideology? How do ordinary people surmount wartime grievances to live together?

In addition to the editor, the contributors are Eleni Haidia, Procopis Papastratis, Polymeris Voglis, Mando Dalianis, Tassoula Vervenioti, Riki van Boeschoten, John Sakkas, Lee Sarafis, Stathis N. Kalyvas, Anastasia Karakasidou, Bea Lefkowicz, Xanthippi Kotzageorgi-Zymari, Tassos Hadjianastassiou, and Susanne-Sophia Spiliotis.

5 out of 5 stars History on the ground.......2001-01-29

Mazower's previous book on Greece in the 1940s was outstanding for providing a clear picture of life "on the ground" in occupied Greece. Several of the essays in this new book similarly provide a texture of life during the civil war, while others provide a texture of Greek life after the insurrection ended. I don't see this as a book favoring either the left or right (a formulation that would mean little now anyway), but as showing the difficult decisions that ordinary Greeks had to make at that time. If you are tired of books about the Greek civil war that revolve around the actions of the King, Churchill, Truman and Stalin, this book is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Crimes of "Greeks" against Greeks........2001-01-17

This book simply includes a few "leftist" accounts of what happened after the war was over. That is, about the naive Greeks putting into action new things they learned during the war, and, specifically, what the British Secret Operations Executive trained them to do: "set Greece ablaze, by fire an Axle." But, the book is worth having for the following simple reason: to see how a contemporary "historian" translates the name E.L.A.S. E.L.A.S. was the Communist militant organization that the S.O.E. financed in order to commit crimes against the German solders. Since the E.L.A.S. militants were cowards and feared the Germans, they concentrated their criminal efforts on fellow Greeks. No Greek can make any sense out of the British policy towards them because it was not meant to make sense. On page 4 of this book, the "historian" author, Mazower, translates E.L.A.S., (Ethnikos Laikos Apeleftherotikos Stratos) as Greek People's Liberation Army. How about, National Socialist Liberation Army? But, what do the words "national" and "liberation" have to do with Marxism? Mazower cannot answer this; it is a question for real historians and those who really know what is behind British policy.

5 out of 5 stars Europe Rises From The Ashes.......2006-01-12

In the Spring of 1947 at a restaurant in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the photographers, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier Bresson, David Seymour, George Rodger and William Vandivert decided to form their own photo agency which they named Magnum, after the champagne bottle. Over the course of the next half century, their photo agency grew into the premiere center of photojournalism in the world.

"After the War Was Over" is a complilation of Magnum Agency photos covering life in Europe from approximatley 1945 to 1960. In rough sequential order, the book progresses from the utter and nearly total destruction of Europe in 1945 through its slow rebirth in the early 1950's, to its headlong rush to prosperity by 1960. This was a golden epoch in the history of photojournalism and the photographers from Magnum were at its forefront.

This work is large format "coffe table" type of book published 1985. Through Amazon it can be purchased for a very reasonable price. In a sense it is a greatest hits type of book. This book is filled with iconic images from the great masters of that era. This work is an intriguing sampling that will hopefully lead readers to many interesting photo collections produced by the individual Magnum photographers. This work is highly recommended.

Neil Sheehan adds a short addendum to his Pulitzer Prize "A Bright Shining Lie," one of the most interesting books out of the many written about this debacle. The primary locations of this book are Hanoi and the north and Saigon and south. Sheehan also takes a look into other places he spent time at as a journalist in the 1960s and 70s, and how they've transformed or changed, and/or haven't, up to 1990. He notes some relevant points from his previous book, including the prophetic Ap Bac battle that took place in the early 1960s.

He returns to many of the places of conflict and speaks with the people. His time in Vietnam and the relationships he had there had an enormous influence on him. His return seems to be a mix of catharthism and a quest for objective observation and curiosity. It should be up to a nation's own people to decide how to do things, but in one regard he could have been more critical and questioning of the policies of the post-1975 Vietnamese government. 100,000 people were sent to "re-education" prisons. Southern supporters and participants of the NVA (Viet-Cong) were forced out to be dominated by northerners: The communists were very repressive.

The title does make one wonder. "After the War Was Over," was written 14 years after the fall of Saigon. Another Vietnam "War" book? Not really, and that is good. It discusses the lives and conditions of those who participated in the drawn-out conflict from not just both, but the many sides that actually existed, and where these people are at today in their lives.

Some of the post-war communistic economic policies and later reforms were described, which are interesting. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, De Luan and the communists in Vietnam tried to collectivise agriculture. A proven disaster 50 years before in the Soviet Union, and then again in Maoist China. Collectivization was an outright failure in Vietnam as well. In addition to collectivization policies, the Northern Cadres forced the northern concept of central planning on the entrepreneurial South Vietnamese, which again, just simply doesn't work, being so contrary to human nature. It doesn't spur efficient production nor proper means of distribution of resources and goods. Did the Vietnamese communists learn anything? Yes, they did--after the fact. Now they claim to be the "first ones" to have departed (in 1986) from the moribund Soviet model. A patriotic communist Nguyen Van Linh, was reformist minded and his positions on policy within the government have labled him as the Vietnamese "Gorbachev." He had ideas that were considered by the post-75ers to be "right wing" or radical, but in the end he had their ear, showing some of the ways the South Vietnamese did things, which were objectively speaking, successful.

In this piece two cities are described, Hanoi and Saigon. Street addresses are mentioned and you can learn where significant happenings took place in both cities if you are going there. Many modern buildings, houses, and hotels are noted also. If someone is coming to Hanoi or Saigon, this book can be useful to learn about where things happened. I discovered that I work in the same building where the Pentagon press briefings called the "five o'clock follies" took place.

Some of Sheehan's coverage of Vietnamese history noted how the Vietnamese drove out the Mongols in the 13th Century, and have been invaded by the Chinese no less than 17 times prior to the 20th century. This book can be knocked off in a day.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Traveling in post-war Vietnam.......2002-06-24

This was not a completely balanced account of post war Vietnam. It is obvious the author was seduced by the Communist authorities when he visited Vietnam in 1989. I say that because when he talks of the effects of war on the south, he mentions the white terror of Diem without mentioning the red terror of the Viet Cong. The red terror targeted not military targets but teachers and bureaucrats. Sheehan does not mention that but Diem's terror campaign, which was mild compared to the red terror. Also when he talks of the 1963 coup against Diem, he terms it the American led coup. Again another fallacy since the coup leaderes had Washington's blessings, but was not led by Americans. Another small lie was the Cambodia invasion by Vietanm. Sheehan wants us to believe that Hanoi was not interested in dominating Cambodia. Most analysts would view this an incorrect statement. If you can read through Sheehan's opinions, it gives those interested in the war some perspective of what happened after the war. Caution is in order for Sheehan's opinions.

This book is written like a textbook - starting with the most basic concepts - but moves on to discuss the tools and techniques of market analysis in considerable detail. Separate sections deal with residential, office and industrial, retail, hotels and resorts, and mixed-use developments. Case studies are given for each type of property. Technologies and data sources to assist analysis are discussed.

The two primary authors are a real estate consultant and an author/director of the Urban Land Institute. Many other professionals are listed as having contributed to the case studies.

The book includes an appendix of data sources of use to market analysts, a glossary of real estate terms and a thorough index.

                                        Book Description

The fluidity of transboundary waters perfectly represents contemporary challenges to modern governance. This book offers conceptual and empirical support for the idea that the human relationship with water must move beyond rationalist definitions of water as product, property, and commodity. Depending on context, water may be a security issue, a gift of nature, a product of imagination, or an integral part of the natural or cultural ecology.

The contributors represent a range of disciplines, including anthropology, law, environmental analysis, political science, and social ecology. Included are case studies of the Imperial and Mexicali valleys on the U.S.-Mexico border, parks and rivers in Zimbabwe, salmon in the Pacific Northwest, the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, Lake Constance in Central Europe, the Black Sea, and the Inguri River between Azerbaijan and Georgia.
