    Book Description

An ancient practice, weaving has been a part of almost every world culture and has often been applied to human shelter. Today, digital technologies and the military and aerospace industries provide some of the most advanced applications of weaving processes. In this volume, Toshiko Mori and contributors reflect on the relationship between industrialization and civilization, low- and high-tech methods, and ancient and contemporary aesthetics in the use of materials in structures for habitation. They analyze performance requirements such as insulation, waterproofing, ventilation, and structural strength. Exploring both natural fibers from renewable resources and manufactured materials, the authors carefully consider the economic and political implications of the use of specific materials. 40 color illustrations; 20 b/w.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the evolution of the book........1999-11-10

An excellent overview of the evolution of the book in the West, prior to printing. Although a scholarly work, it has the presentation of a coffee-table book. As a coffee-table book it fails due to the lackluster illustrations and the price is forbidding. Nevertheless, as a general reference with all the apropos information in a single volume, it is an impressive book and an excellent gift for any booklover with a passion for understanding the antecedents of the medium.

        Book Description

The study of writing and reading in the middle ages is not only of direct importance to the understanding of its culture but also fascinating in its own right. Scribes, Scripts and Readers brings together fifteen essays by M.B. Parkes, the author of English Cursive Book Hands, 1250-1500. Centred on England and her direct neighbours, they deal with scribes and schools of writing, scribal techniques, and wider questions of communication in written language, literacy and the availability of books. This is a book of interest not only to palaeographers but also to historians, linguists, literary scholars and librarians.

            Description:
Research in the UK has suggested that people in lower social classes or from poorer neighbourhoods are less likely than their more socially advantaged counterparts to agree that health and life expectancy are worse among more deprived population groups. The small body of previous research has either used qualitative approaches or coded open-ended responses to survey questions about causes of health and illness or of inequalities between areas. We examined lay perceptions by asking a direct question and using a quantitative, multivariate approach. Residents in three age groups (25, 45 and 65 years old) living in two socially contrasting localities in Glasgow, Scotland, were asked who were more likely to have accidents, cancer, heart disease, mental illness, to be fitter, and to live longer: rich people, poor people, or both equally. Across all the health categories, those in lower social classes or from poorer neighbourhoods were equally or less likely than their more socially advantaged counterparts to say the poor had worse health. In a model containing age, sex, class and locality, those in lower social classes and in the poorer locality were significantly less likely to say that richer people live longer (OR: 0.5). We have therefore confirmed earlier observations that those most at risk of ill health may be less likely to acknowledge the social gradient in health. We suggest a need to examine this apparent paradox in other contexts and in more detail, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches.

              Description:
Most studies throughout the world have found that women report more psychological symptoms than men. Much less is known about possible variation between countries in the magnitude of these sex differences or the factors contributing to the increase of risk among women in countries with different levels of development. This study aimed to compare sex differences for common affective disorders (CAD) between Great Britain and Chile based on two large urban cross-sectional psychiatric household surveys that used similar methodology. Women in both countries reported more CAD than men but Chilean women had an increased risk in comparison to their British counterparts, a difference that became larger as symptom severity increased. Of all the main explanatory variables included in the analysis--education, employment status, children at home, marital status, and social support-the only statistically significant interaction that could account for this increased risk was education, with an increasingly larger risk for women with lower levels of educational attainments in Chile compared to Britain. Education is a powerful socio-economic indicator that is difficult to revert later in life, especially in countries where opportunities for women are less forthcoming, and it might act as powerful reminder of social entrapment.

                Description:
Previous research suggests that there are significant differences in health between urban and rural areas. Health inequalities between the deprived and affluent in Scotland have been rising over time. The aim of this study was to examine health inequalities between deprived and affluent areas of Scotland for differing ruralities and look at how these have changed over time. Postcode sectors in Scotland were ranked by deprivation and the 20% most affluent and 20% most deprived areas were found using the Carstairs indicator and male unemployment. Scotland was then split into 4 rurality types. Ratios of health status between the most deprived and most affluent areas were investigated using all cause mortality for the Scottish population, 1979-2001. These were calculated over time for 1979-1983, 1989-1993, 1998-2001. Multilevel Poisson modelling was carried out for all of Scotland excluding Grampian to assess inequalities in the population. There was an increase in inequalities between 1981 and 2001, which was greatest in remote rural Scotland for both males and females; however, male health inequalities remained higher in urban areas throughout this period. In 2001 female health inequalities were higher in remote rural areas than urban areas. Health inequalities amongst the elderly (age 65+) in 2001 were greater in remote rural Scotland than urban areas for both males and females. ealth inequalities amongst the elderly (age 65+) in 2001 were greater in remote rural Scotland than urban areas for both males and females.

                  Description:
Although there has been considerable research on psychosocial working conditions and their effect on physical and mental health, there has been little research into the effects of psychosocial domestic conditions on health. The association between psychosocial working conditions (and control at work in particular) and coronary heart disease (CHD) is not as strong for women compared to men. Other research suggests that household and domestic factors may have an important effect on women's health. Some studies have shown that low control at home affects psychological well being. However, there has been little research into its effects on physical health. Furthermore, similar to results analysing low control at work, low control at home may form part of the pathways underlying social inequalities in health. The study investigates the meaning of control at home, the effect of control at home on incident CHD events and whether this explains some of the social inequalities in CHD events in men and women. Data from phases 3-5 of the Whitehall II study, London, UK, were analysed (N=7470). The results indicate that low control at home predicts CHD among women but not among men. Furthermore, low control at home may explain part of the association between household social position and CHD among women. There is some evidence suggesting that low control at home among women results from a lack of material and psychological resources to cope with excessive household and family demands. Psychosocial domestic conditions may have a greater effect on the health of women compared with men.

                    Description:
Both the UK's Labour Government and Scotland's devolved Labour-Liberal Democrat coalition Executive have committed themselves to reducing health inequalities. Furthermore, both institutions have emphasised the importance of using evidence to inform policy responses. In light of such political commitments, a significant amount of work has been undertaken in the field of health inequalities in order to: (i) review the available research evidence; (ii) assess the extent to which policies have been based on this research evidence; and (iii) evaluate the success (or failure) of policies to tackle health inequalities. Yet so far only limited attention has been given to exploring how key actors involved in research-policy dialogues understand the processes involved. In an attempt to address this gap, this article draws on data from semi-structured interviews with 58 key actors in the field of health inequalities research and policymaking in the UK to argue that it is ideas, rather than research evidence, which have travelled from research into policy. The descriptions of the varying journeys of these ideas fit three types-successful, partial and fractured-each of which is outlined with reference to one example. The paper then employs existing theories about research-policy relations and the movement of ideas in an attempt to illuminate and better understand the contrasting journeys. In the concluding discussion, it is argued that the third approach, which focuses on the entrepreneurial processes involved in the marketing of ideas, is most helpful in understanding the research findings, but that this needs to be discussed in relation to the political context within which negotiations take place.

                        Description:
It has been argued that social class, if not dead, is at least a 'zombie category' in contemporary Western society. However, epidemiological evidence shows that class-based inequalities have either persisted or widened, despite overall improvements in the health of Western populations. This article presents an exploratory qualitative study of the individualisation of class identity and health conducted in a southern English city. Findings are presented in consideration of two competing argumentative positions around which participants worked to negotiate class identity and health. The first of these positions denied the significance of class for identity and health and was associated with the individualised heroic and stoic narratives of working class identity. The second position acknowledged the reality of class relations and their implications for health and identity, being associated with structurally and politically orientated narratives of middle class identity. In sum, resistance to class was associated with talk about individual, private experience whereas the acceptance of class was linked to discussion of health as a wider social or political phenomenon. This evidence lends qualified support to the individualisation thesis: inequalities in health existing on structural or material levels are not simply reproduced, and indeed in some contexts may even juxtapose, accounts of social identity in interview and focus group contexts. Class identity and health are negotiated in lay talk as participants shift argumentatively back and forth between competing positions, and public and private realms, in the attempt to make sense of health and illness. The promotion of greater awareness and interest in health inequalities within wider public discourse may well help support attempts to tackle these injustices.

                            Description:
Achieving equity in healthcare, in the form of equal use for equal need, is an objective of many healthcare systems. The evaluation of equity requires value judgements as well as analysis of data. Previous studies are limited in the range of health and supply variables considered but show a pro-poor distribution of general practitioner consultations and inpatient services and a pro-rich distribution of outpatient visits. We investigate inequality and inequity in the use of general practitioner consultations, outpatient visits, day cases and inpatient stays in England with a unique linked data set that combines rich information on the health of individuals and their socio-economic circumstances with information on local supply factors. The data are for the period 1998-2000, just prior to the introduction of a set of National Health Service (NHS) reforms with potential equity implications. We find inequalities in utilisation with respect to income, ethnicity, employment status and education. Low-income individuals and ethnic minorities have lower use of secondary care despite having higher use of primary care. Ward level supply factors affect utilisation and are important for investigating health care inequality. Description:
The argument that 'indirect selection' is a contributory factor to health inequality has included ideas about personal characteristics that may originate in childhood and increase the likelihood of both poor health and disadvantaged social position in adulthood. The concept of protective resilience makes a similar but converse argument: that positive characteristics acquired at one phase of life may enable individuals to withstand later adversity. The increasing richness of data from longitudinal studies now allows us to examine these processes more closely over a longer period of life. In this paper we show that attachment style, a psychological characteristic thought to be associated with the style of parenting encountered during early childhood, may act as a source of resilience in the face of educational disadvantage. Men in mid-life who were not burdened with anxious or avoidant attachment styles seem to have been more likely to overcome the disadvantage of a lower level of educational attainment and progress up the ladder of Civil Service grades in the English Whitehall II study. As it is not strongly related to parents' social class, it can be argued that attachment style has acted as a source of upward social mobility which is also likely to reinforce better health in later life.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-read" for any prospective real estate investor.......2007-09-06

Real estate broker, licensing instructor, and investor John A. Michailidis presents Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording, a straight-talk guide to amassing a personal fortune through real estate assets. Defining wealth as "automatic income streams that are independent of your personal labor, and that are sufficient to maintain your chosen individual lifestyle indefinitely," Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses proves especially valuable to readers who are relatively new to real estate. While buying properties with intent to turn them around and resell them - "flipping" - is covered, Michailidis stresses that this form of real estate investment requires expert-level knowledge of local market conditions, and that and ordinary people can easily get burned. Instead, the primary focus is on how to acquire properties and use them to generate revenue streams through renting, or better yet, rent-to-own arrangements. Houses are recommended for beginners since they tend to attract more stable and reliable tenants than apartments. Chapters cover the economics of single-family houses, the right way to present offers, how to attract quality tenants, proven negotiation tactics, and much more. An absolute "must-read" for any prospective real estate investor, as well as anyone who dreams of becoming financially successful and secure.

5 out of 5 stars Begining Real Estate Investor? Read This Book First.......2007-08-08

This is an excellent book for beginning - and even seasoned - investors.
I've been a real estate broker for 29 years and know a thing or two about real estate investing. I try to keep abreast of all new books that come out on the subject.
Most real estate books are complicated, full of formulas and lots of theory. Some are so dull you can't get through the first couple of chapters. The author of this book writes in a very easy-to-read, conversational style.
I found the investing method in this book to be sound and easy to implement. It's not about making a million bucks in a couple of months like so many other books on the market today. It's a very safe, low- risk system that can slowly but surely lead to wealth. In my opinion it is a great way to invest a portion of one's IRA or pension plan - in real estate instead of just stocks.
If you are new to the world of real estate investing, I would certainly recommend making this your first book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Simple explanation of a daunting process.......2007-07-25

I read this book cover to cover in a single day. I could not put it down.

Author takes a difficult process and makes it so incredibly simple. Obviously there is homework involved, but even that is laid out for you in an easy to follow process. I can see real evidence of the author's e-myth style of setting up process and making the system do the work for you.

If you are looking to start investing in real estate, like we are, this is both the push we needed to jump in and the safety net of someone else's experience rolled into one.

4 out of 5 stars Very well written, easy read.......still found some shortcomings.......2007-07-20

Don't let my title fool you, i thoroughly enjoyed this book in fact, i usually never write these reviews but felt i should share this with others as I've read every review before purchasing the book.

This is a very "easy" read, probably the fastest book that i remember completing. I loved how the author got very detailed into how to conduct the transaction from beginning to end. The only issue i found was that I personally do not live in an area where a "nice home in a nice neighborhood" costs under 200K. I didn't see the author provide any direction to this issue if this was the case for the investor. I also had a hard time navigating the website they mentioned at the end of the book and couldn't find how to order the forms from the CD online.

Still a great book and a must read !!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning investor, without the fluff!.......2007-07-17

This book was so interesting I could not put it down! Everything one needs to lease purchase property. The author speaks in great detail without confusing you and not over your head. Enjoyed it immensely.

                                  Book Description

This book, the result of a symposium co-sponsored by several academic and professional organizations, provides information and insights useful for anyone aspiring to succeed in marketing to consumers in the 1990s. The book is unique in that it blends thoughtful commentaries of distinguished academics with the reasoned perspectives of executives of such firms as J. C. Penney, Avon, and Mary Kay in arriving at an agenda of critical propositions and issues relating to the nature and structure of retailing by the year 2000. What types of retailers will exist in the next century? How many retailers will there be? What will be the relationship between retailing and society? Questions such as these are asked and answered in the book. By focusing on likely trends in traditional retailing, direct marketing, direct selling, and multi-channel distribution networks, and overlaying these trends with the impact of technology and changing consumption patterns, the book provides a set of guidelines for achieving retailing success. The book identifies the single-most important key to success in the remainder of this century--relationship management. Only by managing relationships between the firm and its customers, between the firm and its employees, and between employees and customers will a firm be able to survive in the 1990s. As the book notes, retail leaders in the next millennium will have learned to respect the lifetime value of both their customers and employees. The book concludes by identifying 25 conditions that will face retailers in the 1990s. These conditions, which range from hypersaturated markets to demographic trends (income polarization, smaller households, educational decline, more working women, time poverty), database marketing, show biz shopping, and concerned customers, are likely to both inhibit and facilitate retailing in the remainder of the century. Hence, the book should be of interest to business academics, business practitioners engaged in, or wanting to be engaged in, marketing to consumers, and anyone interested in the future of retailing from a societal or public policy perspective.
