    Book Description

Pandora, Seabold, Whistler, Lila, and Tiny have all been enjoying the love and comfort that being a family brings. It is a comfort they are unexpectedly reminded of when Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a lonely baby beluga whale named Sebastian. When they learn that he has lost his mama, the Lighthouse Family, with the help of a cranky but noble old cormorant named Huck, does all it can to reunite mother and child.

Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant and illustrator Preston McDaniels invite readers to brave the elements once again, with a story that reminds us all about the strength and courage of family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing New Book for Young Readers.......2004-09-28

Pandora the cat; Seabold the dog; and Whistler, Lila, and Tiny, the orphaned mice, make-up the wonderful, Lighthouse Family. Together they live amongst each other in an old Lighthouse on the water, where they help to direct ships. However, one day Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a whale, a baby beluga whale named Sebastian, to be exact. Soon they have found that poor Sebastian has lost his Mother, and doesn't know where to find her. It's now up to Whistler and Lila, with the help of the rest of the Lighthouse Family, and a cranky old cormorant named Huck, to find Sebastian's Mother, and bring mama and baby together once again.

In this wonderful, adorable new series by Cynthia Rylant, we are introduced to various wonderful new animal characters, who are sure to rival those found in classics such as THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS. Each character is unique, and possesses his or her own quirks, yet they all share one thing in common, their love for each other, and caring nature. Filled with wonderful sketches by Preston McDaniels amongst almost every page, as well as a delightful plot that will please all young readers, THE WHALE is sure to be a hit.

This book is so cool! I love it. I like that there's a baby beluga in the book, and the cat and the dog and the mice. Because they keep the baby beluga company and they help him get home.

Mrs. Prophet offers her unique perspective on the feminist movement that never got off on the right foot because of what early church fathers did to Jesus' true teachings on woman, which would have elevated her role in church, state and society. Jesus learned of the Divine Feminine while studying in the East before his Jerusalem mission.

5 out of 5 stars Rapidly becoming my favorite lighthouse series.......2004-05-18

The companion book to Endangered Lighthouses, this one is forced to rely on vintage photographs to show the subject at hand because said subject has usually been gone for longer than I've resided on this planet. An impressive job has been done of tracking down the information presented here, especially the photographs, several of which show the subject lighthouse in advanced states of decay, and several more which show the actual death of the subject lighthouse. A great book and a worthy addition to your lighthouse library.

5 out of 5 stars This is a very nice and informative book........2002-04-16

The photos are all B&W but that's due to the old photographs. Its a shame that so many of these lights have gone. Having visited 80 lighthouses I can appreciate just how unique they are.

5 out of 5 stars A fine guide to lighthouse history........2000-05-03

This new volume to a classic provides stories and images of almost two hundred 'lost' beacons, gathering writings from before, after and during their demise and blending research with memoirs and accounts of the lighthouses and their history. A fine guide to lighthouse history emerges.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautifully done!.......1999-12-06

This is an attractive, well-written and thouroughly researched book that anyone interested in lighthouse history should have in their collection. Not another coffee table book with pretty pictures from the present day, this book features lighthouses that no longer exist. Besides being engrossing reading, it amounts to a plea for readers to help save the lighthouses we still have, especially those that are endangered for one reason or another.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for responsibility.......2004-12-31

This is a very neat story about a boat and his father and the trip they take together to Maine to visit some friends. All along the way, Toot's father explains to him that to find his way back, he must remember the landmarks the he sees on the way up. This proves invaluable to Little Toot when he meets his new friend Bob and they go far away from their parents to play on a beach. It gets dark and they both forget how to get back home. However, Toot remembers the landmarks and figures out which way to go to reach their destination. Both get a stern speaking to for not telling their parents where they were going so that someone knew where they were in case they needed help. They learned a great lesson and Toot lead the way home after their visit to Maine by viewing the landmarks.

This book teaches quite a bit to my little guy and he doesn't even realize it. He just likes to read about Toot's adventures but tells me that Toot had better pay attention to where he's going so he can get back home. It's taught him to watch those things himself and he knows where we're going in the car by just looking at the landmarks. This is a great, great book and a good find for little ones.

      4 out of 5 stars Achieving significance.......2004-08-05

Linda Gramatky-Smith extends the Little Toot franchise in this 1999 imprint by Grosset & Dunlap. Instead of simulating her father's work, however, Smith and illustrator Mark Weber shade the character with their own sensibilities. Hardie Gramatky's original Toot illustrations were calligraphic and elastic; an ex-Disney artist, Gramatky's Toot slumped, glided and tugged with great emotional expressiveness. Weber's Toot, on the other hand, is more toy-like and solid; his Toot performs with his face not his body. The storylines also differ. In the original Gramatky book, Little Toot becomes a hero through ingenuity and pluck; he blows smoke signals and then overcomes his small size through sheer determination. Smith's Toot becomes heroic through cognitive facility--he is able to find his way home by remembering landmarks. In the end, both Smith's book and Gramatky's original book play to a child's desire for significance but differ in what it means to achieve it.

What makes Images of Greatness such a stunning volume is the drama and stories that spill from every one of its marvelous pictures. New, old, familiar, obscure, it doesn't matter--great sports photography is great sports photography, and the collection here is simply superb. Pre-1950, the wealth of images--Sugar Ray Robinson, Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Red Grange, Bobby Jones, Jesse Owens, and hosts of less recognizable faces from other sports--almost glow in their stark, striking, black-and-white presentations.

From mid-century on, Images gets to cull from Sports Illustrated's comprehensive archive, and the pickings, in both color and black-and-white, are exquisite: Russell and Chamberlain battling for position, Beamon's jump, Laver's slam, Ali, Spitz, Affirmed and Alydar down the stretch, Nicklaus, Sampras, Montana, Mazeroski, Retton, Sosa, McGwire, Brandi Chastain. Images is organized by decade, each with a short essay for context, but words seem almost superfluous. The pictures are their own context, and their stories are perfectly self-contained. --Jeff Silverman

                    Book Description

Sports are, and have been since the turn of the century, America's favorite pastime. Acclaimed sportswriter Michael Gershman and image aficionado Mark Rucker were given unprecedented access to the two major archives of sports photography. The result is this beautifully illustrated photobook that captures a glorious 100-year history through its key events and its champions in moments of dynamic action and quiet reflection. Superstars from every sport - including Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Babe Ruth - are seen defying gravity and perhaps good sense, landing a shattering TKO, or casually making history. Telling off-camera moments are also included, showing the human side of these heroes who don't always like the limelight.

                          Book Description

Senior managers know that the Internet demands new business strategies. But for many of these executives, much about the Internet and e-commerce remains enigmatic. This important new book by strategy guru Michel Robert demystifies the Internet for executives and provides a comprehensive framework for developing Internet strategies that dovetail with an organization's overall business strategy.

Based on Robert's two decades of research and international consulting experience at more than 400 companies, the e-strategy model described comprises 10 e-drivers, corresponding to 10 key business strategies. These include: demand aggregation for obtaining better prices; build-to-order services that allow customers to configure products to their specifications; customer self-service; direct customer access for manufacturers; dynamic pricing; and others. Using many real-life examples, Robert describes how each e-driver works and how to combine them in a coherent strategy for making optimal use of today's most powerful strategic tool, the Internet.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable reading (if you are objective).......2002-08-23

I am always amused by "reviewers" who trash another consultant's book. Every guy with a phone and fax who thinks he is a consultant finds it in their interest to degrade other concepts.

This book is filled with valuable and memorable information that will help any senior executive get a grip on the Internet and it's future implications.

I don't think the author ever intented for "E-Strategy" to be the encyclopedia of the Internet - I think he did a marvelous job of taking a complex topic that most managers don't understand and putting it in our language and context. I wish more authors took that approach.

                          1 out of 5 stars A classic.......2001-08-18

"A portal is a web capability developed by an organization in which a company offers its own products as well as products from competitors." (Page 85) This definition shows a basic lack of understanding of what a portal is. "The client is the architect." (Page 103) Try telling that to the IT people. The illustrations on pages 98 - 99 are simplistic beyond belief. I've read many IT books in my time, but this one takes the cake!

5 out of 5 stars Basic business strategy with some interesting nuances.......2001-06-13

There is nothing new or Earth-shattering in this book - it's about employing strategy within the context of e-commerce. The authors' agenda, from the preface, is to "... demystify the Internet ... which then empowers CEOs and their key executives to design their own Internet strategy and control their own destiny."

The central theme of the book is wrapped in three imperatives: (1) clarify your business strategy, (2) construct an "e-strategy", and (3) integrate the business and e-strategy.

While the ideas and approach are straightforward and basic, the real gems are contained in the interviews with key executives who have creatively conceived of viable (and innovative) e-strategies and have successfully integrated them into their overall business strategy. In my opinion the most interesting interview was with Philip C. Kantz (CEO, TAB Products). TAB Products makes folders, labels and other commodity items. Not the sexy stuff of e-strategies, but that's exactly what this executive crafted and it transformed his entire business. Not surprisingly the creative part of the strategy was minor compared to the leadership abilities that were required to transform a vision into action and results. This interview alone summarizes the entire message of the book. Each of the other four interviews provides insights about the creative, leadership and technical challenges of devising and implementing an e-strategy.

As you read this book don't be so quick to conclude that it is only stating the obvious. There are some wonderful ideas to be gleaned, inspiration and encouragement from executive interviews, and some subtle nuances in the authors' approach. The structure and message of the book puts e-strategy and the Internet into the familiar framework of business strategy 101. You'll benefit from the interviews, and will have a path marked with familiar landmarks towards implementing an e-strategy.

                          3 out of 5 stars What's your business strategy?.......2001-04-04

A concise and easily read book on how to watch for the micro, macro, and mega changes that are coming our way.

The obvious goal is to get you to use the consulting services, but still, there is solid information about re-thinking business models to accommodate the internet world.

Perhaps the most important advice given is to make sure you have a clear business strategy to begin with, update that strategy to be pertinent in this information age, and formulate your Internet strategy to further your business goals. "The Internet is another vehicle to help a company deploy its business strategy. Unfortunately, because of its pervasiveness, the Internet cannot be ignored."

There are several good pieces of information to use as you're thinking about your IT investment, such as: "Eighty-four percent of IT projects are late, over budget, or canceled. The cost to U.S. corporations is over $184 billion per year. Completed projects achieve only 60 percent of their objectives.

Charts, drawings, and lists help to make clear the authors' intent. Plenty of white space makes the book easy to read (even on a bouncing aircraft!).

If you read Robert's other book, The Power of Strategic Thinking, there is absolutely no reason to read this one. He (and McGraw Hill) put out the same book under two separate titles. Based upon its title, I was expecting the book to focus entirely on e-strategy and provide some innovative, insightful and applicable information. Instead, there was little or nothing "new under the sun" imparted in this book that he didn't already tell us in The Power of Strategic Thinking - which by the way is the much better book of the two. If you want information on e-strategy, save your money and look elsewhere. Jim Altfeld, Altfeld, Inc. Strategic Corporate, Marketing & Sales Planning.
