Book Description

Robert Adam was one of the greatest British architects of the later eighteenth century. So widespread was his influence as a decorator and furniture designer that his name has become a household word. But it is the synthesis of architecture, planning, and decoration that stands at the heart of Adam's achievement, as Eileen Harris shows in this elegantly illustrated book. She considers in detail the interaction of each of these elements in nineteen of Adam's most accomplished interior projects, including some of the most famous British country houses and London town houses. Most of Adam's enormous body of work was in preexisting houses; the challenges of remodeling stimulated his inventive imagination, and he became a master at turning awkward situations to advantage. Harris has mined archival sources, including the large collection of drawings from the Adam office at Sir John Soane's Museum in London, and fully examined the houses themselves to discover exactly what Adam did in each project and why. In her detailed discussions of the planning, decoration, ceilings, carpets, chimney pieces, and furniture of such interiors as those at Kedleston, Syon House, Osterley Park, Newby Hall, Culzean Castle, and Home and Lansdowne Houses in London, Harris uncovers the full extent of Adam's prodigious achievements.

4 out of 5 stars B+.......2007-09-15

This is a gorgeous book; the photos are first rate (always in color) and appropriate to content. The only factor detracting form the book's general excellence is a text that is sometimes disjointed and with references to pictures or illustrations not included in the book. Were that not so, the book would rate an A+.

                                Book Description

Describes the emergence and growth of the grocery business -- its evolution into supermarkets, warehouse clubs, convenience stores, supercenters and discounters -- with the changing consumer patterns of shopping and eating. This is one of the biggest business stories of our time. The Grocers tells this rollercoaster story and offers analysis of the world's top retailers and how they got to be that way.

                                5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2002-07-12

As someone who works for one of the big UK supermarkets, i think that this book was brilliant, by giving me an insight into the grocery business on a more global scale. Perhaps, though the book could have been improved by going into more detail, particularly with the European and Asian markets, and also with some of the smaller UK players. I was also disapointed that the entry into the Irish market by Tesco, Sainsburys, Safeway, and Lidl was not covered in any detail.
The other problem is that the book is now sllightly out of date, but this is to be expected with such a fast changing sector.

Overall though, I would say that this is a good overview of the global grocery market, and an excellent overview of the UK Supermarket industry - a must buy for anyone interested in or studying the grocery retail.

4 out of 5 stars Grocers are people too.......2000-05-18

From an Anglocentric base, Seth and Randall provide a fascinating history of grocery retailing. The facts and figures are all there for the serious of study but most of us will be riveted by the personalities. There is nothing much new about retailing after all: you break bulk and take a margin. Yet these grocers are wildly different people who have built successful, competitive businesses on the backs of strongly held personal beliefs.

The book opens with the leading (as of today) British supermarket, Tesco, and works down the UK pecking order. It must have been difficult for the authors to keep up with the rapidly changing sector and there was only just time to incorporate the Wal-Mart acquisition of Asda. Then the perspective broadens to continental Europe and the US. The last four chapters draw conclusions and make forecasts.

Here I particularly liked the profitability comparisons across the UK, US, France and Belgium (UK margins higher but return on capital about the same). They see the UK as more innovative which will certainly be challenged by others. And they bravely address the implications for, and as a result of, e-commerce.

Those of us who can rise above the Britishness of this book gain greatly from its fresh perspective and candor. I didn't agree quite a few of the authors' assertions but they made me think again.

3 out of 5 stars Too much for students.......2000-04-02

I think that this book is written in difficult language, and not very structural (sometimes you do not know who they are talking about). But on overall it produces good history and development of major UK supermarkets, such as Tesco, Sainsbutys, Asda, Safeway.

                                    Book Description

The View from Mount Joy, Lorna Landvik’s delightfully quirky and intensely moving new novel, is about a man, a supermarket, the roads not taken, and the great, unexpected pleasures found in living a good life.

When hunky teenage hockey player Joe Andreson and his widowed mother move to Minneapolis, Joe falls under the seductive spell of Kristi Casey, Ole Bull High’s libidinous head cheerleader, the kind of girl a guy can’t say no to, even when saying yes guarantees trouble. Joe balances Kristi’s lustful manipulation with the down-to-earth companionship of his smart, platonic girlfriend, Darva. But it is Kristi who will prove to be a temptation (and torment) throughout Joe’s life.

Years later, having once dreamed of a career in pro hockey or as a globetrotting journalist, Joe can’t believe that life has deposited him in the aisles of Haugland Foods. But he soon learns that being a grocer is like being the mayor of a small town: His constituents confide astonishing things and always appreciate the value of a hard-to-pass-up special, a free toy for a well-behaved youngster, a pie for the best rendition of “Alfie,” or simply Joe’s generous dispensing of the milk of human kindness. For Joe, everyday life is its own roller-coaster ride, and all he wants to do is hold on tight.

The path Kristi has charged down, on the other hand, is as wild as Joe’s is tame–or at least that’s how it appears to the outside world. But who has really risked more? Who has lived more? And who is truly happy? As Joe discovers–in this dramatic, heartbreaking, and hilarious novel–sometimes people are lucky enough to be standing in the one place where the view of the world is breathtaking, if only they’ll open their eyes to all there is to see.

The View from Mount Joy is truly glorious: a warm, wonderful picture of life as seen from the deepest places in the heart.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-23

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The author does a great job of following two characters through their lives and the different journeys they take. The main character, Joe, is loveable and Kristi, the antagonist, is so horrible you can't help but like her. This is a great book and I can't wait to read more from this author.

5 out of 5 stars A George Bailey for our time.......2007-10-16

This gem of a novel chronicles the life of a character who at first blush may seem like an "average Joe" (that's even his name), but soon the reader realizes that his life illustrates that the simplest kindnesses can mean everything. Landvick deftly evokes high school in the 1970's and the life of a smaller town near a bigger city and creates a fable that gently reminds us that the words "family" and "blessed" have broader definitions than some would give them.

5 out of 5 stars We could all use a Haugland.......2007-10-13

As other reviewers have said, Joe Andreson is a guy we all would like to know. His story starts when he is in high school and he and his newly widowed mother move to Minneapolis to live with his aunt. He is a hockey player and has dreams of playing in the pros.

His dreams don't turn out and he ends up running a grocery store. What could sound pretty boring is actually magical. His ideas are unique and we could all do with a Haugland Grocery store!!

We get to know the other characters in his life - his mother and aunt, his high school buddies, his friend Darva and Kristi the cheerleader who is such a big part of this book.

But my favorite person, besides Joe, is an unforgettable little girl named Flora. Every scene she is in is enjoyable and her wedding is as unique as Haugland's Grocery Store. I got a real lump in my throat at that one!!

This book is great from start to finish. You will really enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Landvik just keeps getting better!.......2007-10-06

When I began reading this newest book, I was surprised that Landvik had chosen a male protagonist. And yet very quickly I found myself falling for Joe Andresen, connecting to him like an old friend. We first get to know him as a goofy-but-thoughtful high schooler, and watch him create a quiet, benevolent life into his middle age. His story is peopled with colorful, believable characters: family and friends who challenge him, recognize his strength, and make the reader laugh and cry. Through Joe, Landvik reminds us that everyday life--even with its heartaches--can be the arena for astounding goodness and joy. I couldn't put this book down and carried its satisfaction around with me for days.

5 out of 5 stars Lorna Landvig's best job of storytelling .......2007-10-05

This is Landvik's seventh book, and her best-but then I have said that about each of her books when it came out.

Joe Andresen moves to Minneapolis from Granite Falls, Minnesota with his recently widowed mother and starts a job at Haugland's Foods, and high school at Ole Bull High in Minneapolis. Joe is an excellent hockey player and attracts the fleeting, flattering attention of mesmerizing (like a poisonous snake) head cheerleader Kristi Casey. He also attracts the friendship of awkward artist and activist Darva Pratt. They all graduate in 1972. These two women, and his work at Haugland's, become a big part of his life.

Darva goes on to fullfill her dream and travel and study art in France; Kristi travels to find herself; and Joe graduates from the University of Minnesota and takes on the job of assistant manager at Haugland's. Life throws them all for a loop occasionally. There are some horrendous tragedies in Joe's life; and some incredible joys. We follow Joe's life through to the climax-his beloved wife's 50th birthday party, where he acknowledges how much joy and fulfillment his life holds.

Landvik has created a small town's worth of wonderful authentic characters in her writing life, and this book has its share: Joe, a good man with integrity and a flair for helping others; Darva, a talented artist, and a good and loyal friend; Kirk Casey, Joe's younger co-worker at Haugland's and Kristi's younger brother; Joe's mother Carole and his aunt Beth, and Beth's love Linda; and Carole's second husband, teacher Len Rusk. Kristi Casey is the odd one out-shallow, selfish, mean spirited, and attracted to the limelight. She uses sex and her beauty to manipulate and control the people around her. Of course the customers and staff at Haugland's and Joe's philanthropic spontaneous contests are part of the story as well.

Armchair Interviews says: Linda Landvik does it again.

A nice little story about a Korean-American man's life as a grocery store owner. Deals with his country of origin and his family. Great photography to accompany the text. Highly recommended for your child!

A nice biography in a narrative and oral fashion of the family /man behind the once ubiquitious Stuckey's roadside candy, pecan log-roll and gas station chain. It was the place where my sister and I "blew" our souvenir money on those cross country station wagon vacations. A richly detailed, folksy biography of a cultural icon that was swallowed up and spit out by corporate conglomerates. An important book that documents roadside America. This book demonstrates that Ameican wealth is a function of opportunity and circumstance. Not everybody is in a position to become wealthy. However, the author showed through the workings of Williamson Stuckey and his stores, that when shared, the "pecan pie" can get bigger for everybody. One can surmise from reading this bio that a market economy and wealth sharing are not mutually exclusive. Mr. Stuckey shared his chain and ideals with people who might not otherwise have had the chance at wealth. The most important line in the entire book: "They (blacks) would tell me that they had to plan their trips back in the '40s and '50s when they were going across the country so they could use the rest rooms at Stuckey stores. In those pre-integration days, public restrooms were off-limits to blacks, but Stuckey's was different." A very interesting read and it was nice to learn that Stuckey's was back in family hands.

But if you have ever read a women's magazine about this subject or a newspaper article, or even listened to your mother, you won't read anything new. Just because I spent my money doesn't mean you have to.

This book is the culmination of a lengthy relationship between Claire Robertson and a market woman in the area of her research work in Africa. Robertson aims to portray the everyday life and struggle of an average woman in Western Africa. What comes through the pages is no less than an ordinary woman leading an extraordinary life. Through the course of reading this book, you will hear Berida's life story in her own words. As she encounters one obstacle after the other, from problems with her husband, to theft, to the birth and tragic death of her children, she continues to rise above and triumph. For all those who believe that African women are submissive and unempowered this book will be an eye-opener.
