All along the Iron Curtain.......2006-10-12

With photos taken in the mid 1980s the author takes us on a pictorial trip along the former Iron Curtain from the Baltic sea coast at Travemunde (West-East Germany) to the Adriatic sea coast at Trieste (Italy-Yugolsalvia [today Slovenia]); with a separate chapter on the Berlin Wall. They are superb photos full of (sad) atmosphere, poignancy and historical importance. Like another reader, I just wish there were more of them. The chapters with photos from the period following the collapse of the Soviet empire and thus its lengthy prison wall with the west are relevant too. The author doesn't provide any lengthy description of the physical nature of the fortifications, history of escape attempts, as well as the constrast in the lives of people on each side of the borders but that has been the subject of other books and there is no need to; the brief comments combined with the pictures are all you need to appreciate it.

The Lost Border by Brian Rose fulfills an historical need by photographing the Iron Curtain before it was relegated to the dustbin of history. The photos are are in color and fill the need of being historical rather than some modern black and white modern art form which would have defeated the whole purpose of the book. I have walked the Berlin Wall many times in the 60's & 70's to take photos and aggravate the guards and for me to see the rest of the Iron Curtain in this large format book was a pleasure. I compliment Mr Rose on his endeavor. These photos show the stark reality of the evil of communism in clear detail. The Lost Border is an asset to any library; home or otherwise.

Great Idea for a Photo Book.......2005-09-30

I haven't seen anyone else put together a book like this, with shots from all along the Iron Curtain in the Cold War. My only disappointment was that there's not more of it - because the work in here is excellent, and I would have loved for it to not end so soon. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in what the Soviets did to Eastern Europe until the fall of communism.

breathtaking and chilling.......2005-08-15

I grew up behind that border, lived in this grey cold world. The photographs brought back a lot of supressed memories. Looking through the book, I realized that these memories should be kept alive. Awesome and chilling at the same time. I would recommend this book to anyone....the era has passed but it was real. A lot of lives were lost at that border and many untold stories are buried with it. To me that book is a tribute to all who suffered in the name of freedom, I was just one of many.

A collection of international carving examples.......2003-07-08

There are a few helpful drawings and remarks - as can be gleaned from most text on the subject but overall I was somewhat disappointed. Primarily the book is a showcase of small touristy type carvings from the author's travels - chili, alaska, etc.
There is a wide variety of such material covered but it's presented in more of example format - rather than how to carve.

It reminds of some old library book from the 60's. Interesting, informative, but not very current or helpful.

Not at all what I expected. I'm disappointed........2002-07-20

What I was hoping for was a book that would be a complete guide to wood carving. This is somewhat of a history book. It is written in a plain text, and black and white photos that makes it a boring read. You know the feeling of picking up a book, and it feels right. It's an easy read, logical, concise, and the concepts jump out at you, resulting in some WoWs! Well this book is none of that. Although the beginning covers some different woods that are good for carving, additionally he covers the basic wood carving tools, but not how to use them. It would be like, here is a picture of a table saw, but let's not go into how to use it. He goes into the neccessity of the tools having to be sharp, that's good. 90% of this book exhibits black and white pictures of finished wood carvings, and where they originated from. I know what carved wood looks like, I want to know how to do it, and if I can enjoy the instruction, all the better. Reading this book is a lot of work. The front cover gives me the impression that I am going to get instruction on wood carving. As absurd as this may seem, I learned little from browsing the book, other than that you need to draw an outline on the wood of what you plan on carving. I have tons of books on woodworking, and all but one are keepers. This one is going back.
My Dad was a wood carver, and I proudly display his works. I did a wood carving project in a college art class. I just bought a matched set of Freud Hand Carving Chisels, and plan on keeping Dads antique set sharpened and oiled for antiquity. What I need now is someone to emulate with clear concise instruction on the ins and outs of carving, to create mind blowing pieces, of gorgeous wood, and finished to please the eye as well as the best interests of preserving the wood.
This book is written for the experienced wood carver, who has a lifetime of projects under his belt, and wants to sit around and talk about wood carving styles, and history.
I have a book that explains how to lathe turn a flaming finial out of walnut, then hand carve the cone shaped dome into a flame that resembles a torch. Attached to a bandsawn, curly back piece of fine furniture. He shows you how to form the lines, reduce it to the first layer of petals, then doing the next level of the flame lines. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was a must do. Simple, well explained, and color photographed explanation of what to do. I was hoping that this book would do the same thing. Complete guide to wood carving? Great if I was taking a history course, but for someone who needs to carve claw feet for your hand carved furniture, this is not the one. I have a living room full of 17th Century French Provincial hand carved furniture, and learned something from it. Pick out the correct proportional design, lay it out, draw it in, then begin. I'm going to look into buying another book.

Woodcarving introductions and reference...........2000-07-13

I feel this is an excellent book for both beginning and experienced woodcarvers. Tangerman, being an excellent teacher and carver, begins with a short introduction on woodcarving and moves right into discussions on the tools, sharpening and different woods. The discussions are basic enough for a beginner to understand but complete with enough detail to make them useful to even an experienced carver. Unlike a lot of other carving books which tell you about every single tool, brand and method to the point of confusion, Tangerman introduces the basic tools and shows how to use them, discusses when to use them and how to keep them sharp. The remainder of the book discusses the different types of carving as well as carving within different cultures and over time. Along with numerous examples and patterns, he includes instructions on how to carve and what to watch for in the process. As a beginner I used this book as a simple way to start carving, as an experienced carver I now use this book for reference. This is a book that should be in the shop of every woodcarver.

Damsels In Distress Need Not Apply.......2005-10-09

Celebrating the distaff side of the superheroic fraternity, Trina Robbins' examination of the place of women superheroes in comics history is a fascinating and compelling read. Yes, the expected entries are here - a lengthy analysis of Wonder Woman, for example - but countless lesser-known heroines are enumerated and critiqued, from the sidekicks and helpmeets such as Supergirl and Batgirl to stand-alone adventuresses such as the Phantom Lady and Liberty Belle.
However, the book is more than merely a dry recital of history. Robbin's energetic and vivacious style emphasises not just that these characters are remembered, but why they are special, as powerful role models for girls and women in a medium too often dominated by teenage hetboy fantasies.
Robbin's informed and enthusiastic text places each figure, from the 1940's to the present day, into a social context, while never losing sight of the sense-of-wonder appeal that is at the core of the comics medium.
Copious illustrations liven up the text, and if a dash of colour would have helped the monochrome pages - well, there's always the next edition!

Comic book heroines changed with the times. .......2005-03-25

Comic books, like all other aspects of pop culture, reflect the attitudes and mores of society. Therefore, the changes in the female super heroes in the comic books over the years are what you would expect. In the physical sense they wear a lot less clothing, have (much) bigger breasts and their rears are more visible and attractive. Many of the early incarnations of the heroines were very stereotypically female, sometimes to the point of stupidity. Sue Storm, the only female member of the Fantastic Four, insists on shopping and regularly faints through effort. However, the worst case is one involving Batman, Robin and Batgirl. In the midst of a major brawl between the Batgroup and a gang of villains, Batgirl refuses to join the fight until she fixes a run in her tights. To a man (naturally) the criminals stop to ogle her leg, giving the dynamic duo an opportunity to knock them around. No wonder the level of female readership was so low.
Fortunately, everyone grew up in the liberation-tainted seventies and the female super heroes grew more powerful, less prone to act silly and gained in personality. Unfortunately, none ever seemed to catch on with the readership and the majority only had short runs.
This book, a combination of explanatory text with a large number of cartoons, takes you through approximately six decades of women heroes in the comics. You see all these changes, and quite frankly, despite my lifelong interest in comics, I had no idea that there had been so many females with super powers. I put this down to the short life as pen and ink so many of them had. Once again, I was reminded of the difficult time comic books had in the fifties. It was truly a paranoid decade where enemies of the American society were found everywhere, including on the pages of comic books. In looking through the excerpts from that era, it is really difficult to comprehend what could have been so dangerous.
Comic books do reflect the changes in society and that is no more evident than when you examine how female super heroes have been portrayed. Like their human counterparts, many of them went from ditzy sidekick to powerful, independent entities.

A Fine Survey of Women Heroes.......2002-01-22

Trina Robbins puts her years of both comic professionalism and comic fandom to effective use in her survey of The Great Women Super Heroes. She begins in the Golden Age and ends in the mid-90's and is quite thorough. The concentration of the book is on the heroines of the golden age which should be interesting for most readers as this will be the least familiar period to many of them (and readers of other comic book histories will be surprised that there were so many women heroes fighting the good fight). The section that is the most fun, though, is the discussion of the silver age and the recent period as the author allows herself a little more room for editorializing rather than simply surveying and Ms. Robbins opinions are always worth the wait. This area could even be expanded to into a book in its own right. The book is amply and appropriately illustrated. This is a great book for anyone interested in comic books and their checkered history of portraying women. But most of all it is a fun, breezy read.

While most books on logistics and Supply Chain focus on the manufacturing and suppliers' side of the chain, this one takes you to the complete opposite, where the real value is, the CUSTOMER.
The book provides a thorough analysis of the 4 different models of delivery used by online retailers. The greatness of this book resides in the fact that it describes both the most successful online retailers' practices (Amazon, Freshdirect...) AND the biggest failures (Webvan) so we can learn from their mistakes.

The Seven Secrets are thought provoking, but the Brooks sisters take 274 pages to say what could have been said in 100 pages. Also, the chapters veer off topic and spend considerable time discussing unfair treatment of women in the workplace.

The first point that is interesting about this book is the acceptance of the differences between the attitudes of men and women regarding their obligations at home and at work. Realising how we have been brought up, in a way that makes networking, taking risks or finding mentors much easier for men, is an important step towards changing our own attitudes that stand on our way to achieving our goals. One more point of interest is that the book addresses women not only in the corporate sector, but its concepts can be easily applied to all areas of emloyment. The book is highly readable, with many examples and success stories. For those of us using vision aids, note that the book's lettering is well thought of, not large print but comfortable, which makes reading less complicated than the usual overcrowded format used in business books.

This is definitely the book that has had the most important impact on the German debate on sustainable development in the 1990s. It starts with a quantitative analysis of the disproportionate share that Germany uses of the global environmental space. It furtheron envisions in a realistic manner how Germany could reduce its global impact, and how this could be accomplished while maintaining or even improving the quality of life for its citizens. It shows a wealth of creative new approaches for the transition towards a sustainable society, with an excellent mix of realism and the necessary long-term vision. This book was debated in hundreds of events all over Germany, sparked off an enormous public debate and a series of follow-up publications. It was definitely the most successful publication of the renowned Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. One of its main authors, Reinhard Loske, is now the spokesperson on Environment of the German Greens in the national parliament. This book was called the "Bible" of the German environmental movement by the newspaper Spiegel. It is definitely essential reading for everyone interested in the crucial issue how industrial societies could make the transition towards sustainability.
