If Chicago is an architecture lover's paradise today, it is largely due to the efforts of a single individual. Richard Nickel (1928-1972) was not "just a photographer who happens to take pictures of buildings," as he modestly called himself. He was a soft-spoken missionary whose passionate one-man campaign to preserve Chicago's ornate 19th century architectural masterpieces--earmarked for destruction by Mayor Richard J. Daley in the name of progress--inspired a nationwide movement. Richard Cahan's superb biography of Nickel depicts the photographer's heroic and ultimately tragic struggle to salvage everything he could get his hands on, first with his trusty view camera and then with a hacksaw and chisel.

Book Description

"Richard Nickel, whom I had the delight of knowing during his all too brief life, is one of the unsung heroes of Chicago architecture. He was not an architect himself, nor a designer. He simply took pictures, but what pictures! He was, for want of a better description, one of the most sensitive of architectural photographers. More than that, his life—and ironically, tragically and poetically, his death—were fused to Chicago architecture. How he died tells us how he lived: for the beauty in the works of Sullivan, Wright and the others. His story is one that must be told." —Studs Terkel, author "He was completely understanding of architecture and genius and of the quality of the work he was dealing with. He was single-minded in his pursuit and dedication to quality in history, art and architecture. That is an increasingly rare quality." —Ada Louise Huxtable, former New York Times architecture critic "Richard was an excellent photographer—sensitive and intelligent, and a very good craftsman". —John Szarkowski, former Director, Photography, Museum of Modern Art, New York "Richard Nickel was one of those who saw architecture, and who passionately and skillfully pursued its portrayal. He was one of a very small number, and to make his work known would be a fundamental service to architects, students, and teachers as well as to the art of architecture." —Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., architectural historian

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Architectural Preservationists.......2002-01-17

Richard Nickels was a strange fellow, and I don't know if most people would be comfortable in his company. He desperately wanted to save what he considered to be Chicago's architectural landmarks, but in the end grew terribly disconsolate, finding few allies in Mayor Daley or others within the city's power structure. He managed to save many bits and pieces before the wrecker's ball arrived, some of which went to Southern Illinois University, but tons of which ended up in landfills after his death. Do you need this book? If it sickens you to see a beautiful old building torn down, then yes. If you read "Lost Chicago" and were amazed at the priceless treasures we've squandered, then yes. If you think the now burgeoning architectural salvage industry is a good thing, then yes. Nickels fought to save buildings, but when that failed, he saved everything he could. The book doesn't claim he was a pioneer or innovator in that regard, but then I haven't heard of anyone else who dedicated their life to the field. The Trading Room from the Stock Exchange Building - where Nickel's died - survives in the Art Institute of Chicago today only because of his efforts. We almost certainly owe him a far greater debt than the book has claimed, since he helped to publicize the threat to our architectural heritage and started building a consensus towards preservation and salvage. The book will amaze and annoy you. You'll learn much more about Nickels' personal life than you would want to know. You'll wish he had finished some of the writing projects he started. And you'll wonder how much more he might have accomplished if he had lived a bit longer. It's a book that makes you think, and one you won't soon forget. - tjm

I ate this book up! Nickel's photgraphs are outstanding, and his dedication to salvaging historical buildings is heroic. The historic preservation movement owes an enormous debt to this man.

The story of Richard Nickel, who loved buildings of Adler & Sullivan fame. A wonderfully well-written book. I saw it in the library, and to my own amazement, could not put it down when I got home. Even if you know little about archetecture, you will love this book for it's story, the life and love of Nickel. Who I call with slight tongue-in-cheek a nerd.

5 out of 5 stars detailed war story.......2007-07-12

Paul Carrell's two volumes, Hitler Moves East and Scorched Earth, were my introduction to the war on the Eastern Front and are still among my favourites. He naturally relates events from the German perspective but in an objective, professional manner. Personal anecdotes enliven the accounts of the combat and every-day conditions that are described. There are also many good maps which help understand the various campaigns and battles and both volumes have a number of photographs in the middle. The first volume begins with a description of June 22nd 1941 and the second ends in Stalingrad on February 2nd 1943. Anyone with a more than casual interest in this area of the war would do well to have these books in his library.

1 out of 5 stars Consider the source..........2006-03-24

When you read Carrell's books consider who he is/was. His real name is Paul Schmidt. He was a chief spokesman to the press for the National Socialist Foreign Ministry and worked for the Nazi propaganda magazine "Signal". He was a Nazi before they came to power and eventually was a member of the SS. Although he didn't see combat.

5 out of 5 stars Great narrative on the war in the East.......2004-11-10

This is probably the best narrative on the battles fought by the Heer and Waffen ss in the East. Hoewver there is little coverage of economics, logistics etc. nor discussion of strategies per se. What you get is involving accounts of how it was like to live and fight in the vast steppes, suffocating marshes, impenetrable forests and desolate watstelands of Russia.

5 out of 5 stars Hitler Moves East 1941-1943: Great Battlefield Account.......2002-10-12

This is simply a great battlefield narrative of the German-Russian conflict of WW2. Virtually all place names mentioned in the book are referenced in the excellent battlefield maps. This is unlike any other book I've read on the Eastern Front. An intimate knowledge of European Russian geography is not required. Battlefield troops movements are well described in the narrative and through the maps. It is also written in a lively and dramatic fashion and touches on individual exploits as well as painting the vast canvas of the battles of armies. It is the most readable of the narratives on the subject I've read to see how the war was won/lost on the battlefield.
Be aware this is not a full account of the War. It could be said that this is a military account from the German Wermacht's point of view. It was written during the "Cold War" and Soviet Sources by many were considered suspect. No mention is made of the NAZI atrocities in European Russian during the German occupation or barbaric treatment of the Russian prisoner either. Political or diplomatic aspects of the war are not covered.
This doesn't detract from the fact that for those that love a great battlefield account and want to know how the war was fought over this vast mostly overlooked (in English Language) front, this is a great read.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2001-07-29

This as an excellent book for anyone interested in learning about the battles on the Eastern Front. Paul Carrell not only gives the big picture view of the war in the East but also includes many detailed first hand accounts of the fighting. To bad this book is no longer in print. By far the best work I have read on Hitlers war against the Soviet Union. I highly recommend it!

This book follows the German Invasion of Russia from the June 1941 until after the battle of Stalingrad in early 1943. It is crammed with some of the most exciting first person accounts you will find in any book of this subject. You are not a WW2 buff unless you have read this book and it's companion "Scorched Earth" which is also excellent.

Anyone who stumbled through the Web's earliest days--as either a starry-eyed entrepreneur, investor, or employee--will find plenty to recognize in J. David Kuo's insightful and entertaining dot.bomb. Wrapped in the tale of Value America, Craig Winn's wildly unsuccessful bid to hop aboard the Internet revolution in 1997 and totally remake retailing, the book paints a clear picture of the way optimism and wishful thinking became fatally intermingled in the rush to mine the gold supposedly buried deep within this glowing, new electronic medium. And Kuo, formerly the company's senior vice president of communications, knows the story intimately and shows here that he also knows how to tell it.

"The single goal was to build scale, build the brand, and become the Internet behemoth... overnight," he writes in describing how Winn, a traditional businessman with traditional ideas about building a traditional company, was sucked into the day's unbridled cyber-fervor as he tried to assemble his vision of a one-stop electronic shop that took advantage of all the Net's imagined bells and whistles. "[But] Winn had more competitors than he imagined," Kuo continues. "In Silicon Valleys, alleys, and corridors, retailers, technologists, and bankers were creating dot.com companies that would sell pet food, lingerie, books, electronics, discount items, luxury items, home-improvement items, furniture, and everything else imaginable. All those companies were already operating on new Internet math. Winn had to catch up."

In the pages that follow, Kuo vividly chronicles the heady years that came just after Michael Wolff's pioneering Burn Rate era, and he does so with just as juicy an insider's perspective (although without the rancor and animosity that such an experience often engenders). There also are plenty of practical lessons here. One strongly suspects, however, that much like those brought back from gold rushes to Sutter's Mill, these also will go largely unheeded when the fever spreads again. --Howard Rothman

                            Book Description

                            J. David Kuo had a ringside seat at one of the biggest busts of the Internet age. Value America (NASDAQ:VUSA) was supposed to revolutionize retailing by using the Internetno more retailers or distributors needed. Fred Smith, legendary founder of Federal Express, called it the best business model hed ever seen and invested millions of dollars. In a few short years, the company raised and spent hundreds of millions of dollars before a spectacular crash.

4 out of 5 stars The Creator Syndrome.......2007-07-12

I found this book because I have started a small business and wanted more insight into the dotcom failures. I must say that it was a very enjoyable read. The author has good pace and, at moments, gives the reader pause so that you can examine your own work-related issues.

Business is a large Bell curve; at one end is the consumer (person, business, government, whoever); at the other end is the product (physical product, specific knowledge, skill), and in the middle is Value America and others.

Clearly this book demonstrates what can happen when things start to unravel and you are locked into battle with investors on one side and egos on the other.

I once read that you should be patient for growth, but not for profits...this is SO TRUE. Capturing market is great, but if you don't also capture profits then what's the point. Even worse is going public when you're nowhere near profitability. That just ups the ante.

Overall if you're wondering what can go wrong in a business, why IPOs shouldn't be taken lightly, why aspirations of wealth subvert business integrity and decision making, and why smooth-talking people without the numbers shouldn't be trusted then this is the book for you.

I only rated it 4 stars because there could have been more in the way of decision analysis, etc. Though at Value America it doesn't seem like analysis was really a word they were familiar with...maybe the net world moved to fast for them!

3 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.......2006-10-01

I enjoyed reading this immensely. The story is fascinating and a real page-turner. However, after deliberating the situation, reading additional material etc., I came to realise that this is a biased view of the events and people of ValueAmerica. The success of a company like ValueAmerica involves bringing together the right people at the right time. This didn't happen at ValueAmerica. No single person can be blamed. Kuo is just as "guilty" as any of the other executives for the failure of ValueAmerica and his "objective" view is a little too objective for someone involved in running the business -- almost disassociated from it. For someone like Kuo, it was simply another company he could move on from. For Winn, it was his life. I feel sorry for all of those who invested time, energy and money in this venture. Initially, a fantastic and enjoyable read. Ultimately, disappointing and sad.

                            5 out of 5 stars Highly educationaly.......2006-08-06

I found the book very useful for any budding entrepeneur. One can learn a lot from mistakes from Mr. Winn . Also one gets good insight into how these top company execs think and operate ( i.e not as well as you would imagine! ) I have the audiobook and the narration by Kuo is excellent, very real and humorous.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!.......2005-04-26

                            If you're in business development....

If you've ever been in pitch meetings where you're inventing the company of the future, but selling it as if it's already here....

If you've come back to a team of managers who yell, "you sold WHAT!!!!"...

If you've ever worked for a passionate, driven, and visionary leader...

                            You'll love this book.

Reading this book was cathartic. I laughed all over the place. Kuo tells a great story. I've read a few other books with the same narrative -- the rise and fall of a company - but Kuo's is my favorite by far.

Not only is the story and company remarkable, but Kuo's tells the story with heart and empathy for their leader, while capturing the experience of the managers who had to create the deliverables and the terror and love/hate relationship they had for their leader.

Kuo really captured the love/hate relationship companies develop with innovation, and the tension between the entrepreneur and managers accountable for delivering the goods.

                            Highly recommended.

                            4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-02-01

I think some of the criticisms of Mr. Kuo are too harsh. Like others, I noticed that in this book Kuo alternates between praising Craig Winn and describing the horrible actions of Craig Winn. I took that as a sign that Kuo personnaly felt ambivalent. That doesn't make it a bad book. Ambivalence is a normal condition. Glossing it over to create some kind of artifice of consistency would have truly made this a bad book.

One thing I got out of this book, besides that I enjoyed reading it, was some insight into human nature. It's a book that can tell you something about the way people act and the strange drives that they have. It shows how sometimes people with terrible psychological problems and huge blind spots are the most rich and powerful.
