Four and a Half Stars.......2007-06-09
A delightful book. Each house mentioned is accompanied by a well writtein single paragraph that describes it beutfifully and even adds suggestions on how to build it such as putting the kitchen in the basement which is brilliant for a time before air conditioning. However it only provides two floors of plan rather than a full set. No plans for attic or basement which is a shame. Design XXXV no floor plans at all.
Otherwise great for those interested i archiecture or the history of the victorian period.
A joy.
A visual feast for the home architecture aficionado.......2000-10-29
Dover Publications has done an outstanding service in reprinting home plan books of past eras, and S.B. Reed's "Victorian Dwellings for Village and Country" is one of the best. A complete reproduction of the 1885 edition of this book, the Dover reprint is a fascinating and beautiful glimpse into one of home architecture's richest eras.
The plan of the book is simple and informative. It is a collection of 35 marvelously detailed designs for homes that range from a humble three-room cottage to an imposing boarding house. Each selection contains front and side (and in some cases, rear) elevations, along with floor plans for the first and (for the 2- and 3-story buildings) second stories. Each building is accompanied by a charming descriptive essay and a detailed estimate of the 1885 cost to build it.
The building plans bear such picturesque names as "Lillie Lake," "Willimantic," "Ravenswood," and "Stepping Stones." Interspersed among the design profiles are a few short essays on such relevant topics as plumbing and building cost estimation.
The Victorian language of the descriptive essays is a delight. Consider this description of the New Brighton (Design XV): "It has a tasty and picturesque exterior, and is convenient, cosey [sic] and cheerful within." But even more delightful are the floor plans and elevations. Covered verandas, inglenooks, decorative trim, towers and balconies--the full extravagant vocabulary of Victorian architecture is gloriously preserved.
This book will be treasured by historians, old house restorationists, artists, students of architecture and many more.

Michelangelo was murdered --.......2004-06-15
-- some time in the 1980s. At least, his work on the Sistine Chapel was murdered, the way Beck and Daley describe it.
On a technical level, this book is outstanding. Beck starts with a few hard, historical facts. First is that fresco has two forms. "Fresco buono" embedded pigment in wet plaster; it was always rushed by the drying plaster and limited in color by plaster's harsh chemistry. "Freso secco" was paint with animal glue binder, painted over dry plaster or buone. It gave plenty of opportunity for layers of subtle, painterly effects and for use of fragile colors. The second historical fact is that plaster dries in minutes or hours, and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel took years. Beck offers volumes more historical data, but it's clear that a lot more than drying plaster went on.
The so-called conservators of the Sistine Chapel insisted that the organic layer over the plaster was not Michelangelo's work. When they cleaned the ceiling, they scrubbed it down to raw plaster, the fresco buono. Any secco work literally went down the drain with the wash water. Beck argues, very convincingly, that all of the subtlety and all that made Michelangelo's work unique went with it.
Beck offers many more examples of harsh, even destructive treatments of historical art treasures. That brings us to the book's second level, the social one. It opens the book with Beck under fire in four separate lawsuits in Italy. The case in point was his report of a disastrous treatment of a sculpture about which he had unique knowledge and insight. The plaintiff in all four cases was the conservator who had done the job, supposedly defending his personal honor, his profession, and perhaps all of Italy against any slight by a mere expert.
If it weren't for the facts laid out, this would look like some weird conspiracy theory. As it is, Beck (and now artwatchinternational.org) is a voice that speaks for paintings and sculptures that can not speak for themselves, and can not plead for themselves against the solvents and scalpels of the "cleaners."
This book very clearly describes the threat to our legacy of artworks, and the wall of silence around those who present the threat. It is chilling.

A Glimpse into an Unknown World.......2000-11-03
I bought this book based on the recommendation of a friend who was taking a course in which it was mentioned. She knew of my interest in art and thought I might enjoy the book, and I certainly did!
Beck opened up new vistas to me, of which I had little knowledge. He writes of the art and the politics of restoring great works of art, and of the options which should be considered before restoration is done. His opinion is that, many times, the restoration destroys the original painting, for all intents and purposes.
An example he gives is what happens to the halos in paintings. We have all seen paintings with halos over certain figures. In the old original paintings, these halos are seen as airy and light, almost ray-like. When restored, Beck compares them to heavy golden plates sitting atop the heads of the figures in the painting.
Upon finishing this book, I realized that it left me with as many questions as it answered regarding the need for and methods of restoring great works of art. I also realized that there are as many differing opinions on this topic as there are museums. It seems that the best course in some instances might be no restoration at all. Although I now feel almost more confused about the topic than when I started the book, I will always have an interest in reading about it.
I find it interesting to visit the Art Watch International home page (which Beck founded) to be brought up to date on current restoration proposals. Some of the goals of this group, as outlined in its mission statement are "TO ACT as a watchdog organization in the arena of cultural policy, protecting works of art and the public interest from vested private and institutional interests. TO SERVE as an international advocate for the conservation and stewardship of historically significant works of art and cultural monuments. TO PROMOTE an open exchange of ideas and information on the full range of practices in the field of conservation, restoration and international stewardship of important cultural artifacts."
A New Look at The world of Art.......2000-07-28
James Beck's Book Art Restortaion:The Culture, The Business, The Scandal, gives all those interested an incite into the world of preserving the treasures of the arts masters. He demonstrates through arguement and photograph the havoc occuring among the world's most valued art accomplishments, and allows the laymen to see the politics and personal ambitions that penatrate into the field of art conservation. While his book is of course very much based on opinion, he is very astute at backing his opinion up with historical and scientifc fact. Beck uses this book as a ladder to launch his campaign to save the artistic masterpieces of the past as well as those which will need conserving in the future. Anyone who is interested in the processes of conserving or the preserving of powerful pieces of art should read this book, and become aware of the way in which our public treasures are being handled.

Book Description
From junk mail blockers to do-not-call lists, potential buyers today are more interested in "opting out" than listening to marketers' messages. Opt-In Marketing offers a prescriptive plan for reversing this dangerous trend. This hard-hitting book is based on a program that increased sales at IBM by 80 percent in one year and features sidebars from industry luminaries and examples from Fortune 500 firms. It outlines a 10-point blueprint for rethinking customer care and is the perfect guide for marketers looking to once again be seen as partners instead of predators.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for anyone marketing over the web........2005-10-15
Roman nails it. He preaches the golden rule - as applied to marketing. He shows how to use permission and precision timing to win at marketing. Even better, while he has a fortune 500 client list, the strategies he recommends are not just for the big guys. In fact they are easier for small companies or even individual salesman to use.
Required Reading for Marketers.......2004-09-09
There are 3 keys to your success: Execution, Execution, Execution. Roman and Hornstein deliver - with precision - on the who, what, where, when and how of each. A must read. John Wanamaker would give it 'two thumbs up'
Finally -- a customer-centered marketing approach.......2004-09-01
This is must reading for the serious marketing strategist. It's a prescient look at how companies will have to interact with customers in order to break through communication clutter and sustain growth. I plan to use it as a regular reference for strategic planning. The section on customer care is an important addition to the current thinking about marketing communications. I like that it lays out a disciplined process for creating, implementing and measuring effective programs that provide lasting value, not just tactical applications. The last chapter of checklists alone is worth the price of the book.
learn what's in this book .......2004-07-29
There are things in this book that you can't get elsewhere...at least I've never been able to find them. At our company, we've tried for years to successfully integrate our direct marketing and sales teams. We also want to lengthen the lifetime of our customers. The authors have been doing this for years and it shows in their case studies. If you can learn what's in this book and pull it off in your organization, you'll join the less than 2% minority of companies who have achieved this level of marketing excellence.
innovative and psychologically sophisticated marketing.......2004-06-17
Good to see individuals in the marketing/advertising field who truly understand the complexity of people and organizations. Consistent with the most up-to-date approaches in the field of psychology (specifically psychotherapy research), the authors of this new book are quite persuasive in showing readers the enormous value in tailoring marketing approaches to the individual needs of different organizations. Moreover, they use statistics in a quite user-friendly way and they also offer a great and quite readable variety of case material to support their views. An engaging, persuasive, and innovative look at contemporary marketing. Well worth a look; you'll find yourself hooked.

Will the genetic research that gave us the Flavr Savr tomato also give us the power to customize our children? Medical thinker Gregory Stock believes that this is precisely what's happening and that we'd better get used to it fast. Redesigning Humans: Our Inevitable Genetic Future explores gender selection, gene therapy, germinal choice, and many more options available now or in the near future, but lays aside the hysteria common to such discussions.
Stock sees the cloning controversy as a distraction from issues of real importance, such as balancing offspring trait selection against eugenics. Writing with the clarity and precision of a philosopher, Stock engages his readers with thought exercises and real-life examples. While not a brainless cheerleader for big science, he believes that we can, and certainly will, use any means necessary to give our children an edge, even if it means profound changes for our species. Redesigning Humans offers the hope that these changes need not be catastrophic if we pay attention now. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
A groundbreaking work, Redesigning Humans tackles the controversial subject of engineering the human germline -- the process of permanently altering the genetic code of an individual so that the changes are passed on to the offspring. Gregory Stock, an expert on the implications of recent advances in reproductive biology, has glimpsed the inevitable future of biomedical engineering. Within decades, Stock asserts, technological advances will bring meaningful changes to our offspring; this scientific revolution promises to fundamentally alter the human species. With recent findings presented in a new afterword, Stock's provocative assessment cuts through the debate to envision an age of radical biotechnological advancement and unprecedented human choice.
Customer Reviews:
Good topic, poor book.......2007-03-08
This book could have been written in 1/3 the pages. It continously poses the same argument for the same reasons over and over. Yes, that is good for emphasis, but unfortunately it does so in a few places ineffectively. There are numerous logical errors throughout the book (3 in the first 15 pages) and a couple of poor editing points making this book painful to read at points. I give this book its second star only for the great topic it attempts to talk about.
Like It Or No, a Solid Overview of the Field.......2007-01-12
The author, putting aside the social debate on the subject, does an excellent job of presenting what is happening and what will happen in the genetic engineering field in the coming years. The impulse towards eugenics comes hand-in-hand with a culture obsessed with the material. Equally so, the impulse to protect one's child from cancer and heart disease will play a role. Regardless of the source of new genetic practices, the practices themselves will change our society.
If you'd like to understand just what that society might look like, take a look at this excellent work.
finally, objective coverage of this subject without preaching.......2006-04-01
ive read several books on this topic, and this is the best of them. the author faces the reality that humans will take advantage of emerging genetic technologies as they become available, safe, and affordable. it really is an "inevitable genetic future", but most authors are lost on that fact as they yammer endlessly about this and that precaution. people are comfortable with the status quo and try to preserve it. pioneers see that it wont last and look beyond. make no mistake, this author too addresses precautions but doesnt overdo it like other commentators. the authors stance on redesigning humans is not so much unqualified support for it as it is acceptance of its inevitability. the author does support it but in a dignified manner i thought, not in a cheerleading fashion.
this book is a look at what will come to be. its not a question of if, but when. that said, you should know whats in store for mankind. i find it very exciting. this isnt time travel, its something more immediate. america and the west may resist now, but the East shows no such disinclination. once they leapfrog us, as they are poised to do, we will see the folly of our overprotective ways. but i would be interested to discuss this in the forum.
a thought provoking and concise book (about 220 pgs without extras at the end), also recent. highly recommended.
A Candid Look at Man's Future.......2005-04-21
Throughout the world, there are ongoing debates over whether the human genome should be tampered with. Legislation has already been passed prohibiting numerous variants of genetic engineering as it applies to humans. But in this book, Gregory Stock explains that we will eventually have the technology to change ourselves intrinsically, and that we will also use it. He strongly advises us to look toward the future and make decisions regarding how this newfound knowledge should be used, instead of simply whether it should be used.
Genetic engineering has the potential to cure nearly every disease on earth. For hereditary diseases, such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia, this is the only way they will ever be cured. There is much ongoing research into finding a cure for genetic diseases, and eventually those efforts will meet with success. Once this happens, parents could be screened for defective genes, and if they do have them, their children could be genetically engineered to not have them. It would be cruel to deny these parents the only option they have to bear a healthy child, and in this way, the engineering of the human genome will begin.
Once diseases begin to be cured through this method, a line will have to be drawn determining what is a disease and what must be lived with. Is high cholesterol worth curing? What about obesity, ADD, or nearsightedness? All of these have a strong genetic component, and could be significantly reduced through genetic engineering. Inevitably, different countries will have different laws regarding what is considered a disease.
Eventually, genetic engineering will extend into the realm of what isn't a disease, but which could be improved on. Attributes such as intelligence, life span, physical capabilities, and talents could all be under the control of prospective parents.
This book is a startling look at the near future of the human species, and whether you thing genetically engineered humans are a good idea or not, this book is worth reading. Dr. Stock does a superb job at approaching this subject from a neutral perspective, stating not what he hopes will happen, but which he believes will happen. He gives many other examples of what can be accomplished with genetic engineering as well as what has already been accomplished in animals. He also corrects many of the myths surrounding this technology, many which have come from popular science fiction. If you have any questions or doubts concerning genetic engineering, this is an excellent book to read.
Convincing, to a point.......2005-04-13
Gregory Stock writes well, and Redesigning Humans is an enjoyable read. Beyond that, nothing he puts foward is beyond the realm of reasonable possibility. Just the same, read with a bit of skepticism. He's a bit too much of a futurist, and while that's obviously the intention and draw of the book, I think it's much more worthwhile contrasted with something like Flesh and Machines: How Robots Will Change Us by Rodney Brooks
Book Description
Renesch puts forth a vision for historic transformation for all humankind as he pictures a global future full of possibilities--a much "better future" than the one that appears most likely if we rely upon forecasts based on existing trends. Not only that, the author points directly to the business community as the segment of our society that can best lead the rest of the world in such an incredible transition for all humanity.
Customer Reviews:
New HOPE for a Promising Future.......2006-02-02
John Renesch has generously shared his tracing of the path of self-examination of thought and life that many of us long to do. He helps you begin the process yourself, seeing that the need for change that we see in the world today begins with personal change in each of us. He points out that we often stay an arms-length away from really making our personal contribution, looking outside ourselves or waiting for someone else to deliver, before we move into action. Meanwhile, we continue to blame, complain, hide behind our fears or those thrust upon us. He gives a compelling call to action for each of us to answer the call of what he terms our "ultimate responsibility". Inspiring new vision. Great stories. This book gives NEW HOPE for a promising future at a time when we need it most. Great read!
Outstanding.......2003-12-09
John Renesch takes a stand for the greatness of the human being. He sees a better future that is possible but needs to be worked for. He points to the possibility of a more sane and mature world through humanity's embracing its destiny for a more conscious evolution.
This book is neither a complaint about our situation nor a grandiose scheme for changing it. It calls us all to turn old habits -- like being passive and perpetuating the status quo -- into more productive ways of living and working. It gives us many realistic action items that any person, anywhere can take to help build a better future.
"A must for system agents".......2001-01-09
Highly recommended reading for business leaders! Everybody still in possession of a certain degree of open-mindedness and hope for a better future will acknowledge that this book provides more than food for thought. It's a blueprint for action. The French writer, philosopher, and Nobel laureate (literature) Andre Gide (1869-1951) once said: "I do not know whether it will be better when it changes but I know it must be different in order to be good". John's Book helps all of us to shape the system to become good! Peter Sorg Head Group Relations Member of Senior Management Ciba Specialty Chemicals Inc., Basel, Switzerland
5 stars for optimism.......2000-12-24
I found this book to be encouraging. There is a way to treat others in a more human way. John makes an excellent case for why and how it can happen. I was downsized 2 times in the last 3 years. The problem I have with corporations is HOW they do the downsizing( ouch!). John's open style of writing allowed me to see what I was holding onto from these past experiences and let go of it...move on. Someone must hold the bright light for others to follow.
Great Road Map!.......2000-12-24
Great tools and ideas for those who feel like helping to improve our present reality and to start building one that works for all. Let's enjoy and use it!

Profound Ideas.......2002-02-22
Some profound ideas are in this book. I suggest reading a chapter, then thinking about it, then re-reading it. Very interesting concepts.
Some Interesting Ideas.......2002-02-22
Some of the thoughts in this book are profound. I think you need to read a chapter, then think about it for a day, then read it again. Very interesting stuff.
The best strategic thinking book.......2001-10-29
Our professor assigned this book in the DBA reading list. At first I read it because I had to, but I have got to admit that this book really made me think as early as when I was reading the preface. Great book, hard to put it down before finishing it.
Sensible, useful, but unexciting.......2000-12-07
An eminently sensible book in which it's hard to find much with which to disagree. If you haven't thought much about the thinking process and don't have a background in cognitive psychology, this book is well worth reading. If you have, then you'll find it agreeable but not enlightening, though it may remind you of important points that you've forgotten to pay attention to. Wells focuses on flexible thinking and how to ask the right questions. He outlines the strategic thinking cycle: Perceiving, acquiring insight, developing foresight, understanding possibilities, identifying strategic levers, matching levers with capabilities, reasoning, choosing a core strategy, and making the strategy work.
Read less , think more !!! This is the challenge of S.Wells.......2000-09-06
We are returning to the simple things, S.Wells understood it, try you too.
Choose the future is about, Take the time, see what happen, understand, think what you will do then.
Masterpiece of strategy.

A Mission-driven Church for the 21st Century.......2000-08-12
In 1998, Paul McKaughan, executive director of the Evangelical Fellowship of Mission Agencies (EFMA) with former missionaries William and Dellanna O'Brien published the results of an extensive research project "Choosing a Future for U.S. Missions." They brought mission agency executives, denominational leaders, pastors and theologians to a workshop and a series of focus groups around the premise that missions as now known is at a crossroads and needs to change if it is to be faithful to the Great Commission.
In this study an appeal is made for mission agencies and churches to recognize how 21st Century missions is changing. Among other things, local congregations are increasingly dissatisfied with simply being passive partners in fund raising appeals to send missionaries to other world areas where, in some instances, Christianity is now growing faster than in their own neighborhoods.
McKaughan and the O'Briens question whether the "missionary-drivenness" that characterized 19th and 20th century missions "will produce real missions" for the future. They suggest, "Real mission drivenness will help us escape the prison of dollars and finances, but a missionary approach may never do so." Missionaries as "professional Christians" are no substitute for the witness of mission driven local congregations. "The role of the mission agency has changed from being the `door' of missions to being the `facilitator' of local churches."
The authors offer an agenda for organizational and spiritual renewal that they believe has the possibility of joining congregations everywhere in a mission-driven church for the 21th century. A must read for those concerned about future mission efforts and the local church's chaning role in global missions!

"For a few decades American prisons were the wonder of the world. [However] early hopes that a prison regime could be a powerful means of reforming most convicts have been abandoned, and prisons are seen even by some of those who think we need more of them as savage repositories, to be shunned or veiled rather than admired. This sad history is drawn with great insight and learning in [this] important new book about prisons and punishment in America by Michael Sherman and Gordon Hawkins. . . .
